what? i think you meant to say that crash won the worst picture award.
hm…i was actually surprised that crash won best picture…
That’s a slap in the face on Munich, Good Night and Good Luck, Capote, and Brokeback Mountain. I’m all for brokeback winning but Crash?? They couldn’t go with Munich? Not even Capote? The Gay Mafia is going to be pissed. The Oscars will lose about half more of its audience. The conservatives already tuned out now the gay men will too. And they will not be forgiven. Everyone will look awful next year.I’m not that surprised though. I heard some of the members wouldn’t even watch Brokeback. Crash should’ve won when it was called Magnolia. And it’s actually quite funny… Crash won because it tackles prejudice and that’s exactly why Brokeback lost.
*urgh* Crash as best picture of the YEAR? Good Night, Oscars…
And the winner for biggest douchebag whose wasn’t up for anything…. Jamie Foxx. Nice ‘huh, interesting’ comment when reading th ebest actress category. Yes Jamie, South-African American can apply to some one that is white and more African than your family’s last six generations.
Oh well… Disappoiting ceremony, everything was so predictable, awards were given to people for their carreer, and the best movie is just a fantastic joke… Where did that come from? I mean is it because most of the members of the Academy are from L.A.? Is it because members of the Academy didnt want to see BBM as a best movie(boouh gaaay people!!), or is it simply to make the movie pay for his own popularity?Dunno, but that was sad, and reallyyyy political…
I think it is funny that Crash is nominated this year, but it came out in 2004http://imdb.com/title/tt0375679/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnx0dD0xfGZiPXV8cG49MHxrdz0xfHE9Y3Jhc2h8ZnQ9MXxteD0yMHxsbT01MDB8Y289MXxodG1sPTF8bm09MQ__;fc=1;ft=206;fm=1
Hmmm…well I have to say, about the only one I didn’t agree with was Reese Witherspoon. I really don’t believe her performance was as strong as the other ladies nominated.
I love that people are all for Brokeback winning because there were gay cowboys in it and it was well shot but Crash had great subject matter, interesting stories, and fantastic acting and people are taking a piss about it.
I was almost surprised Crash won in the best picture category. It was a good film however, its look at the racialization of contemporary society was at best a superficial one that did more to perpetuate racial stereotypes than it did to highlight the pervasiveness of racism and the ways in which such stereotypes are subverted and made palpable. It also alienated its audience by creating a "I’m glad I’m not like that" sentiment. If the Academy was truly interested in making a statement against the ugliness of racialization and stereotypes, Munich would have won. It is apparent that the Academy is not ready to embrace a Munich or Brokeback Mountain and would prefer to stick to watered-down allegories. In this regard, I guess Crash’s win was never really a surprise after all.
Crash was the worst of the five nominees–I think it will go down in history as one of the most overrated movies to win. Good night and Good luck, Capote, Brokeback all deserved it more.
CRASH WAS A PIECE OF CRAP!!!I AM TOO SAD TO TALK RIGHT NOW
I was torn between Crash & Brokeback for Best Picture. I loved them both for different reasons. At least they won in other categories so they should be happy. There are plenty of deserving actors, directors, etc that have never won an Oscar so I think any win is a blessing.
Felicity Huffman deserved best actress. That role was way harder to do. No 1 watched Transamerica though. I dont really care as much as Crash winning best picture. Im sure theres some conspiracy there.
Brokeback Mountain had a higher dramatic arc than Crash and was better written (as evidenced by the screenplay getting awarded - good on you, Larry McMurtry!). I think people will look back on this year’s Oscars and say the wrong choice was made…but that’s showbiz for you.
Actually crash came out in 2005…
I think when you look back at this years Oscars it will be one of those "What the heck were we thinking??" years.Crash at best is like one of those after-school morality movies. The acting was good but it defines mediocre-zero creativity film making. History of Violence is about 10 times better than Crash and it wasn’t even nominated.
#5 Joe Stalin: How do you determine someone is "more African than another"? How do you know Charlize’s family is more African than the last 6 of Jamie’s generations?Charlize’s family who probably benefited from a harsh system of Apartheid were they denied Blacks of every civil right including imposing curfews on Blacks and fordidding them from coming into certain neighborhoods? That is more African to you?It depends on what your definition of AFRICA is. If being African means dignified struggle for one’s homeland when it is denied to you then Jamie is infinitely more connected to that idea than Charlize Theron.Jamie’s generations worked here for free, unpaid labor as slaves, so Whites can live comfortably. THAT is very African. For the homeland of Africa has suffered from harsh coloniolism - a system equal to slavery here in the US and South Africa was this harsh system’s biggest champion. Now nevermind that I don’t think , Jamiee Foxx a comedian, was making any political statement with that - he just thought it was odd or rare to hear those words together: South-African-American. Why politicize his comment? And to politicize it with some assenine comment is truly sad.no one can define what is a true African experience unless you define what is Africa. hard to do.I think a great moment was when the director of Tsotie while winning his Oscar called on his two leads actors and cried VIVA AFRICA! that was beautiful. i don’t hear Charlize screaming Viva Africa. ANd that director was White, by the way. I thought it was one of the most beautiful moments at the Oscars.
Crash was crap. And I am a person of color (Black) and it still did not resonate with me. Pleaaaaase. Brokeback was a better movie. By far. Who are these Oscar voters and why are they so disconnected??
I lost all faith in the oscars when "life ain’t easy for a pimp" one best original score. The last note of that song was absolutely horrifying. As for Crash winning, I was greatly disappointed. I agree with #19, I am black and I didn’t give a **** about this movie. I fell asleep about 5 times, while trying to watch that movie. And the subject matter isn’t anything new. We have about 5000 movies about racism and it’s getting old.
Oh, my mistake. The song is "it’s hard out here for a pimp"Either way, the song was baaaaaad.

#20 Jay: I agree. public Eneny should of been nominated for Fight The Power fr om Do The Right Thing years ago if they wanted a Hip Hop songm to win. This song is offensive and stupid. The Pimp thing is old….whatever.
I’m glad I’m not the only one thinking the Oscars missed it big time when it chose Crash as the best picture over Brokeback Mountain. I absolutely hated Crash. It was heavy-handed and relentless with its everybody-is-a-racist message. As I’ve discussed racism in a BAMZ thread on this site, I’m neither blind nor a virgin about racism. Racism is mostly subtle, pernicious and systemic and not as caricatured as it was in Crash. Crash made the characters as such extreme archetypes, it was hyper-surreal like a Road Runner/Wile Coyote cartoon. There are far better films portraying racism such as "To Kill a Mocking Bird," "The Defiant Ones," or even Spike Lee’s "Do the Right Thing," than Crash. What a major disappointment. "Brokeback Mountain" might not have been the best film of 2005, but it certainly is a seminal film that has become a cultural icon. For the first time to my knowledge, homosexuality wasn’t treated merely as a gimmick in a film. It portrayed the deep bonds of love that endured against societal conventions and the damages and collateral victims when this love is oppressed. I think Brokeback Mountain will still be a part of our cultural lexicon long after this 2006 Oscar, while Crash will just be another "Remind me again what film won best picture in 2006? Anybody remembered Traffic won for 2003?"George Clooney liked to pat Hollywood for its progressive thinking (Michael Musto pointedly noted on Keith Olbermann’s show that George forgot Hattie McDaniel was required to sit at the back of the theatre in the 1939 Oscar and Hollywood dragged its feet in dramatizing the plight of AIDs condition), but Hollywood played it safe with Crash. And to choose "It’s Hard Out Here to be a Pimp" as best original song? There’s that Hollywood patting itself on its back that it’s so progressive and liberal when it makes itself look more about tokenism. Even Al Sharpton was offended by the choice. He said that 99% of his radio callers, along with the people he’s met, were also offended. For shame! For the record, I like hip-hop music. Anything Nas or Common did would have a better original song selection than the Pimp song.
For once I agree with Cindy2. I did not like Crash. Although, I did not think its point was everybody is a racist rather everyone is flawed - which is very valid and a great point to make - we are all bad in some way when put to the test - humans fail.I just did not think the movie succeeded in making this point. I, too, was not happy about the Pimp song as a Black person. Such a tired view of Black life. Give me a break. So over it. Brokeback was the best film.
