*urgh* Crash as best picture of the YEAR? Good Night, Oscars…

Oh well… Disappoiting ceremony, everything was so predictable, awards were given to people for their carreer, and the best movie is just a fantastic joke… Where did that come from? I mean is it because most of the members of the Academy are from L.A.? Is it because members of the Academy didnt want to see BBM as a best movie(boouh gaaay people!!), or is it simply to make the movie pay for his own popularity?Dunno, but that was sad, and reallyyyy political…

Hmmm…well I have to say, about the only one I didn’t agree with was Reese Witherspoon. I really don’t believe her performance was as strong as the other ladies nominated.

I was almost surprised Crash won in the best picture category. It was a good film however, its look at the racialization of contemporary society was at best a superficial one that did more to perpetuate racial stereotypes than it did to highlight the pervasiveness of racism and the ways in which such stereotypes are subverted and made palpable. It also alienated its audience by creating a "I’m glad I’m not like that" sentiment.If the Academy was truly interested in making a statement against the ugliness of racialization and stereotypes, Munich would have won. It is apparent that the Academy is not ready to embrace a Munich or Brokeback Mountain and would prefer to stick to watered-down allegories. In this regard, I guess Crash’s win was never really a surprise after all.

Felicity Huffman deserved best actress. That role was way harder to do. No 1 watched Transamerica though. I dont really care as much as Crash winning best picture. Im sure theres some conspiracy there.

ANd that director was White, by the way. I thought it was one of the most beautiful moments at the Oscars.

I lost all faith in the oscars when "life ain’t easy for a pimp" one best original score. The last note of that song was absolutely horrifying.As for Crash winning, I was greatly disappointed. I agree with #19, I am black and I didn’t give a **** about this movie. I fell asleep about 5 times, while trying to watch that movie. And the subject matter isn’t anything new. We have about 5000 movies about racism and it’s getting old.

I’m glad I’m not the only one thinking the Oscars missed it big time when it chose Crash as the best picture over Brokeback Mountain. I absolutely hated Crash. It was heavy-handed and relentless with its everybody-is-a-racist message. As I’ve discussed racism in a BAMZ thread on this site, I’m neither blind nor a virgin about racism. Racism is mostly subtle, pernicious and systemic and not as caricatured as it was in Crash. Crash made the characters as such extreme archetypes, it was hyper-surreal like a Road Runner/Wile Coyote cartoon. There are far better films portraying racism such as "To Kill a Mocking Bird," "The Defiant Ones," or even Spike Lee’s "Do the Right Thing," than Crash. What a major disappointment. "Brokeback Mountain" might not have been the best film of 2005, but it certainly is a seminal film that has become a cultural icon. For the first time to my knowledge, homosexuality wasn’t treated merely as a gimmick in a film. It portrayed the deep bonds of love that endured against societal conventions and the damages and collateral victims when this love is oppressed. I think Brokeback Mountain will still be a part of our cultural lexicon long after this 2006 Oscar, while Crash will just be another "Remind me again what film won best picture in 2006? Anybody remembered Traffic won for 2003?"George Clooney liked to pat Hollywood for its progressive thinking (Michael Musto pointedly noted on Keith Olbermann’s show that George forgot Hattie McDaniel was required to sit at the back of the theatre in the 1939 Oscar and Hollywood dragged its feet in dramatizing the plight of AIDs condition), but Hollywood played it safe with Crash. And to choose "It’s Hard Out Here to be a Pimp" as best original song? There’s that Hollywood patting itself on its back that it’s so progressive and liberal when it makes itself look more about tokenism. Even Al Sharpton was offended by the choice. He said that 99% of his radio callers, along with the people he’s met, were also offended. For shame!For the record, I like hip-hop music. Anything Nas or Common did would have a better original song selection than the Pimp song.
