Tarzan Broadway Review

O-M-G. P-U. Tarzan stuuuuuuuuuuuuuunk!!!!!!!  Unlucky me watched the musical Tarzan earlier this week while it was still in previews at the Richard Rodgers Theater. Worst. Musical. Ever. The set was horrendously ugly (neon green ropes acted as vines).  The costumes were vile (the gorilla costumes literally looked like bodysuits with dangling yarn attached to it).  And the choreography was uninspiring (maybe five more weeks at "aerial lab" would have helped).   With a $15-$20 million budget, I expected much much more.   The weakness of the show is that it’s trying to smoosh De La Guarda and an overextended Disney-fied plot together into a whole that has too much going on. Broadway doomsday, aka opening night, is May 10. Check out the Tarzan article in this Sunday’s edition of the NYT that has Broadway message boards buzzing –

  • When the Times invests three pages on set design rather than music, book, or cast, you know you ‘re in trouble.
  • Sorry, maybe its just the picture, but he looks NOTHING like Tarzan should. He looks more like a skinny emo kid rather that an ape-man. Here’s hoping thats just a really bad picture…
  • He looks, um, dainty.

UPDATE :: Tarzan Broadway cast pictures added!

Jared, This is your second broadway review this week and I have to say you are not shy in stating your opinions on how you loved The drowsy chaperone and how traumatized you are after watching Tarzan. I will be in NYC this July and I am hoping to see an entertaining broadway show.

So what Jared, no stinging commentary on Tarzan’s voice? Didn’t think so, because it’s AMAZING! And why didn’t you post some of the positive comments on the broadway boards? Hmm…I smell some scew stew.

Wow, Tarzan is always portrayed by people that are so HOT! Travis Fimmel, Josh Strickland…

Is he gay? He looks too "pretty" in some of his pictures.

okay well i saw the show for christmas it was ah-mazz-en. i love it and i met tarzan ( josh strickland) hes so hot!

Let me tell ya I’ve done the impersonation of Josh Strickland as Tarzan. I am bringing Tarzan The Broadway Musical here at ELHS “East Lansing High School’s Center for the Performing Arts Theater. Kierin Kerbawy will be Tarzan in the musical.

Josh is very pretty. Other than that, I can’t say I care much, at least until, I get to know him.

Famous people and celebrities are boring, because they aren’t REAL as we get to experience them - they’re two dimensional fantasy fare. I would vastly prefer to get to actually KNOW a person and zsee what there true character is all about, and whether they have humility, compassion, intelligence and humor.

Some one can LOOK and SOUND good til the cows come home, but that doesn’t mean a great deal (unless you’re a director trying to fill a role or just a shallow surface oriented person)
