Angelina Jolie on The Today Show

Ann Curry :: In what seems to be the middle of no where, on the edge of Namibia in Southern Africa.  A very pregnant Angelina Jolie emerged from her private family vacation to speak on behalf of children in poor countries who don’t get to go to school. What is the worst, in your mind, of that?
Angelina Jolie ::
God, there are just so many things.  It’s really that thought of the potential of a human being.  The lack of education causes death.  More children die under the age of 5 when the parents aren’t educated.  More people get AIDS when they haven’t had an education.  Statistics prove that if every child was in school, every year, 700,000 less people would get AIDS.
AC :: It seems also, for you, kind of a personal thing.  You have two children you’ve adopted.  Both of you whom might have been in this same circumstance of not being able to get educated.  And when you look at them and realize that…
AJ :: I look at them and just think, especially my daughter and how many millions of kids are out of school in her country.  Especially girls.  And I know how families with AIDS when parents die of AIDS, there’s no possible way that children can make a school fee.  There’s no possible way she would have gone to school.  And she is so smart and so strong.  Her potential as a women one day is great.  You multiply her by thousands and that is the thing that I can so clearly see when I look at her.  Maddox — the amount of street children in his country… in all probability Maddox would have probably been one of the kids going the garbage picking in the streets.  He would have been on his own.
AC :: It must mean much to you, as a human being, to be able to give them an opportunity they never would have gotten.
AJ ::
I’m happy for them that they’re gonna have all this education and I hope, with it, they do some good things.  That they’re good people. [giggles]

PHIL ANTHROPISt @ 04/27/2006 at 6:55 pm

#124 ASH: Maddox is four years old and getting quite an education compared to others. If his mother decides to homeschool him, he will be learning much more than his ABCs and 123s…he will be learning compassion, character and GIVING BACK. Please forget anything that you’ve heard about this family and focus on the issues they bring into the pop culture’s apparent shallow consciousness. This isn’t about beauty, fame, divorce or infidelity….it’s about changing the world for the better by teaching the world’s children.

ILoveGossip @ 04/27/2006 at 6:56 pm

She looks grogeous, no make up what so ever, her laugh is infectious, I can’t wait for the dateline interview, I’m definely going to tape this one.

That woman is amazing. She must be an example for all the women of the world. She is beautiful inside and out.

the real tita @ 04/27/2006 at 7:10 pm

Hey, gang. I just thought of something. What if, during the MAMS reshoot (remember, VV wasn’t around anymore because he wasn’t on any of the cantina or the shooting scene), Jennifer heard a rumor that the two were getting on. Maybe not the actual act but getting close to it. She then decides to pay Brad back by getting it on with VV. Then she learns that oops, the rumor mill wasn’t true. It was just one of those buzzes they create to generate interest in the movie. But she’s already done the deed with VV so there’s no taking it back. Braddy finds out and the hopeful reconciliation then goes awry. Even the marital counseling doesn’t help patch up the differences. Jennifer, I think would be stupid enough to burn her bridges without thinking things through. She’s all about not being perceived as the victim but the aggressor because of pride. She really can’t seem to show how much she loves somebody for fear they would use it against her. In short, she’s the type that would cut off her nose to spite her face.Whatever, Brad probably gave her an out. Either she files for divorce or he will. That’s when he probably decided to pursue Angelina in earnest and how he got to her. There was no chance of him going back to the soon to be ex after that so she jumped in with both eyes open. Knowing Angelina, she wouldn’t let grass grow under her feet. She’s impulsive enough and likes him enough to take that high of a risk. Brad would never let on because of the kind of man he is and he knows the ex will not want to go there when sh.. hits the fan. However, the ex was bitter enough to let some venom pass through her lips but can’t really let it all out.Maybe, that’s why Angelina was trying to suppress and it came out as giggles. They don’t discuss the end of the marriage but they must have discussed something during the beginning of their relationship. They just went on from there without looking back.Amateur psychiatry, I know but hey, it’s a theory. There’s so many out there that this one doesn’t seem so farfetched. Think of how the ex said VV was fiercely loyal. He didn’t leave her even though she’d used him as a tool for revenge against the alleged philandering husband. VV must have liked it and didn’t care as long as it benefitted his career and his reputation as a ladies man. It also made those rumors of his pitching for the other team diminish a bit.

African Girl @ 04/27/2006 at 7:41 pm

#129 / Phil AnthropistYou are much too kind but do you really think ASH doesn’t know Maddox’s education is well taken care of? This is just another attempt to pass a snide comment. No Ash, AJ is too busy about the other children, she’s doesn’t care about her own son. Is that what you want to hear? Education for ALL (Young & Old) by the Year 2015!!!

PHIL ANTHROPISt @ 04/27/2006 at 7:59 pm

AG: Yes, I’m sure it was yet another attempt to deflect the conversation from the issues…not alot of discussion here that indicates AJ’s message is heard. She has said she would remove herself from any project if she found her notoriety was detrimental to the cause. I know how traveling expands one’s vision of perception…living in a society that represents only 12-18% of the world does nothing but foster myopia. My own daughters knew this and left me a legacy to continue despite my own grief from their passing.

To # 89 moi Jade: Thanks for th humour, that was superb!

hey guys, i just noticed…is that a wedding ring on her finger??? is that the one brad bought for her?? wow…that ring looks simply elegant on her fingers….they are married…ha! ha!bamz+1 4ever and ever!!

QUESTION TO BAMZ @ 04/27/2006 at 8:16 pm

QUESTION: How many BAMZ fans have actually taken Angie’s advice and donating to her charities?Or are you all just sitting at your computers and adoring her picture? You do no service to Angelina if you do not move beyond your adoration and actually donate. So after you post, get on the ball and do it! Otherwise you should be ashamed to call yourselves a true BAMZ fan.

This is off topic but wanted to respond to 74 Isela I understand your cynicism about money going to politicians instead of research. Just want you to know that money is certainly a big factor in finding cures to all sorts of things like MS and Cystic fibrosis. However, money is only one factor. The problem is that some diseases are just difficult to cure. They know about the HIV virus now for more about 2 decades but they can only just treat it with a cocktail of drugs. In the wealthier world, AIDS is more like a chronic illness but there’s still no cure in sight. Take cystic fibriosis for another, they discovered the gene that causes CF at least 20 years ago may be more. But to date, they can’t cure CF. the CF society is also very active raising funds and directly funding research. The technology is just not there yet but one day perhaps. But that’s going to involve doing research which may upset people. Its going to involve doing stem cell research. Its going to involve doing horrible things to chimpanzees (they share 98% to 99% of our genes). As a society, as a world community, we are going to have to make choices.

#139 I’m sure most of the ppl. who post here, does donate to charity or are involve in one. I do so in children school where they do sales and collect the money to send it, Guess where? Yes Africa. What about you?

I love her! she looked absolutely radiant!

I’ve taken AJ’s advice, donating $ to africa; I choose diff countries in africa each month. So yea, I am proud that I am at least making a difference.

QUESTION TO BAMZ @ 04/27/2006 at 8:42 pm

To #141:Yes I donate to Yele Haiti- I focus on Haiti mostly because I have lots of Haitian friends. I am going to write a letter to my Congress peson regarding Darfur.I think the emergency focus now is the genocide in Darfur and the education initiative that she is talking about.Again, we cannot claim to truly be BAMZ fans if we do not learn from her and follow her path. I thin she would want her fans to not only to adore her but to give. It does not take that much time.

Original Curious @ 04/27/2006 at 8:42 pm

OMG! Moi Jade I’m dying here. Your posts are getting to be as much fun to read as Rica’s. How wonderful of African Girl to "take one for the team". I was pretty sure hearing the voice of Angelina would bring her around.I admit to some sadness that the people who can’t get over the past have come here to ruin our celebration; not surprised, but sad.Aside from the giggling, which I find just so endearing; I was so touched by her assessments of where her children would be if not for her. Not in a maudlin or self-congratulatory way at all, just right out there. I had a mental image of Maddox, that absolutely adorable child, picking garbage to survive - HOW do we NOT pay attention? I also loved the way she said No child left behind meant NO child. I love the way she seems to view the world without any borders. Also let out a cheer when she pointed out that Britain, with many less financial resources that the US contributes 3 times what US does. WHAT a woman! Brad is indeed a lucky man. Must be quite a change to be around someone who is laughing all the time. Isn’t that funny? All the tabs had her so miserable, and the whole time she’s been laughing behind closed doors. One more point for those who believed that the razzis only got stone faces on purpose.

The real lou @ 04/27/2006 at 8:43 pm

#139 I have donated quite a bit of money to the Angel network to help katrina victims,I also volunteer 2 Saturdays a month to help under privileged childern with reading and math.I’m married and have 3 kids so my time is limited, but I do what I can.

ceeusbeeus @ 04/27/2006 at 8:44 pm

I’m on the West Coast too, and it’s on now! Next story should be her.It is reshown at 9.00 pst. Hope this helps

African Girl @ 04/27/2006 at 8:48 pm

Phil AnthropistI so sorry to hear about your daughters and I hope you’ll continue to have the strength to carry on this beautiful legacy.People allow contempt to cloud their minds, they can’t see the bigger picture here. You don’t have to like her to feel compassion….why is that so hard to understand? I am a product of a Family who travelled around and it has helped me a lot. I wouldn’t trade any moment of it for anything in the world. Of course there were moment I would have like to stay in a place but when I think of the new adventure I’ll be missing out on, I’ll be packing my bags in seconds. It was like a test… "You are going to a new country, you’ll be with people who’s culture is probably different from yours, how to you blend in without losing yourself? This was my challenge. It was not always easy but a lot of the time it was fun. Most of the things I’ve learnt in life comes from my experience in these different countries…people, society, culture. When you stay in one place (physically and mentally) there is a tendency to start believing it is where life begins and ends. Step out of your comfort zone….explore the world, there is so much to learn, see and do. (Paraphrasing my mother here)Expand your horizon. Thank Goodness for technology, we now have the world right at our finger tips. Learning new things doesn’t hurt but not learning can prove dangerous.

Is this news? @ 04/27/2006 at 8:51 pm

So, did y’all hear perez is reporting that she fired her agents. what’s up with that? anyone know? Is this just a slow gossip day or what?

# 144 | QUESTION TO BAMZ |I happily donate $$ on a regular basis and I make it a priority to educate myself about Darfur, Yele Haiti, the mission of UNHCR, and now the education of the children of the world.I volunteer in my community once a week and my everyday 9-5 job is working with underprivileged inner city youth. I cannot attribute the above to Angie and Brad but they do inspire me to think and act both locally and on a global level.

# 149 | Is this news? So, did y’all hear perez is reporting that she fired her agents. what’s up with that? anyone know?It could be just a slow news day or it could be something more. Angie signed on to CAA when she started dating Brad. They shared the same agents up until now - if Perez is right.

# 139 | QUESTION TO BAMZ-donated to the ONE organization(I am proudly wearing my ONE T-shirt and ban, UNHCR for refugees( blue band), Genocide prevention Organization, Lung Cancer Society, Katrina Relief through Red Cross, UNICEF, Rainforest Society, Veteran Disability…I have a list somewhere…is this enough for you?..
