Education can come in all forms. I was in Port-au-Prince Haiti last year and you know what I saw? Because so many do not go to or have ever been to school in that country, something needed to be done about educating people about health issues asap. Knowing the love Haitians have for music and song, the volunteer doctors and a local translator created songs from the symptoms of diseases as well as their treatmnets. They couldn’t read or write but they had memory and memory of song. Listing the stymptoms of an ailment would be the lyrics and the chorus would be the either the preventive meaures or the treatment. The meoldy would be what ever they chose complete with drums and handclapping and demostrations of someone suffering from that ailment or disease. Ingenious! All this was to empower local village communities with information so that if they or anyone experienced symptoms, they were encouraaged to seek medical help as soon as possible.
