Time Magazine released their TIME 100, a list of global icons –100 men and women whose power, talent or moral example is transforming our world. Angelina Jolie was listed under "Heroes & Pioneers" and an article by Deputy Secretary-General of the U.N. Mark Malloch Brown was posted…
Recently, I took my 13-year-old daughter Maddy to a New York City event honoring Angelina Jolie. Every parent will relate to the fact that Maddy often finds the world of celebrity magazines more interesting than the world of her father—which in my case centers on the United Nations and its work fighting poverty. That night Angelina brought those two worlds together. Maddy was awed by how Angelina used her celebrity to lift all of us beyond the glamour of a Manhattan ballroom and make us confront the grim realities of poverty in the farthest corners of the globe.
That ability to transcend worlds has something to do with Angelina’s movie-star charisma—but it also says something about her diligence and grit. Angelina, 30, spends a great deal of time in the developing world, visiting refugee camps, speaking and listening to the men, women and children she is working to help. Those people, Angelina explained, "have seen so much, they’ve felt so much pain—lost more than anyone could bear, and yet they contain joy of life and appreciation for small things we often forget." It was a further indication of Angelina’s humanity that she stopped to listen and talk to Maddy as the city’s power brokers hovered impatiently, awaiting their brush with celebrity.
Angelina’s commitment as goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has pushed her to speak out about root causes—economic failure and lack of justice. She urged me relentlessly to meet her last year during a stopover at an airport where our paths happened to be crossing, so that I could brief her ahead of her appearance at a big international meeting. It is typical of her. The subject was the Millennium Development Goals—a set of objectives agreed upon by the world’s governments. They range from eradicating poverty to reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS. As always, she wanted to be prepared—not just to share impressions of poverty but to be able to speak seriously to the issues. Angelina went on to make a film for MTV on a village in Kenya, where a pilot project is under way to fight poverty, hunger and disease.
That blending of the activist and the performer, not on the set but in the African bush, reflects her determination to stick with a subject, immerse herself in it, make it part of her life—and then bring her public with her. It is celebrity advocacy at its most effective, most intelligent and most sincere. For that, she has my enduring respect and gratitude—and Maddy’s. (More pictures in the gallery!)

Angelina Jolie is indeed a hero for championing the causes of the people facing atrocities, genocide, diseases like Aids, no education, abuse of human rights and poverty. It is indeed celebrity advocacy at its most effective, most intelligent and most sincere. She is really helping to the transform the world for the BEST. Full of it–Angie works on behalf of the UN as their representative/ambassador. She pays her own way and does far more than many others that have the same status. Having spent significant time in Africa on some Earthwatch volunteer expeditions, I can tell you it is a wonderful country with some of the nicest, most genuinely caring people you’ll ever meet. That said, their children need help. AIDS has decimated the population. Drought has ruined crops. Corrupt leaders have raided treasuries. When Angelina does her visits and work, many Africans have no clue who she is. The only thing they know is that there is this kind American trying to help them. For some of the people who’s lives she touches, this is the first contact with an American and her kindness and genuine carrying leaves behind goodwill for the U.S. and a ray of hope for the people. Her popularity, her tireless work bring in money to help these same people. An African child can attend school for a year for $16. Often they don’t have even that much money. So why do you feel it necessary to rag on someone who is trying to help the kids. Someone who doing something positive. You say you like Bono — well he is doing much of the same things in differnt ways. So is Oprah. So is Nicole Kidman (another UN ambassador) and Prince Harry. These people are putting their hearts and their own time and money into trying to make the world a better place. They aren’t doing it for publicity unlike Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Simpson with their visits–what have they done in follow up, nothing! But AJ just keeps on plugging. Why don’t you tell us all what you are doing to make the world a better place? I’m sure we would all be curious to know since you seem to feel it necessary to criticize someone who is doing what she can wtih her time, talent, money and heart!

Just watched Angie on Dateline and what a great interview. Angie is in total love love love with Brad Pitt ("Brad great father, people don’t know him, good man, didn’t think I would have a baby but things changed"). I have been an Angie fan for years, and I have never ever seen Angie so extremely happy! All those stories as to Brad being "whipped" and Angie being the "boss" who will soon leave him are definitely wrong. Angie is not going anywhere anytime and neither is Brad. Also hooray she told everyone that "my pregnancy has been fine, no morning sickness, etc" while touching her much wanted "baby". See how foolish are those who believe any of the many tabloid lies as to Angie having a difficult pregnancy and putting her baby in danger and not wanting her baby. See how the foolish have been fooled by the tabloids who have made up whatever in order to sell more copies. My first thought was that JA is an even bigger fool than I thought, but that’s beside the point. And the second thought was a reminder of that New York article that JJ posted a few weeks ago where one of the tabloid editors said it absolutely blew his mind that it was Angelina having Brad’s baby. The reason that particular quote came to mind is that it really underscores how adamant AJ must’ve been about not having children. I think if you asked the general public they would have thought of JA in a maternal light before AJ and yet it’s the exact opposite. It’s something that to me blows away all the negative comments the haters can come up with. Say what you will about the woman, but it’s obvious that she loves not just her children, but ALL children.

Just wanted to let you guys know–rerun of the interview (I hope will be at 2:30am eastern timezone). Thats what my digital cable show guideline says. I missed to interview and when I got home went straight to that channel and scroll the timeline to see if it will show again–and it said 2:30am!!

I just happened to think of something else that AJ said during the interview that cracked me up. It was the comment about just being glad that one kid wasn’t trying to sit on the other’s head. I can totally relate to that. Not because I have kids, because I don’t. Just now I remembered that my mother has pictures of one of my older brothers trying to sit on MY HEAD when we were kids! I think it’s a guy thing. Even when we were older I remember he thought it was funny to try to sit on my head and/or **** in my face. It’s definitely a brotherly thing to do.

Just watched the interview. It was great. she prefers being with her family than making films, they both love children. They support each other’s vision. Just saw the Anne Curry interview. Angelina is a likable, beautiful, nice woman. So much mystery and gossip around her but in reality I think there is a sweet, almost shy girl underneath the tough girl facade.Lovely woman. Influential indeed. My biggest observation is that the man said he loved architecture, spent two years outside of hollywood to design and build a family house and the ex compalined about the house and the furniture in VF interview. To me I felt he must have been very sad about that. Somewhere his brother commented about how hard he worked on the house but he had to let go and sell it after the divorce. I did not get the impression there and then that he was getting too motivated by the ex in the things that made in happy. Now he’s all pumped up about it, at least from the work he wants to do in New Orleans and the TV show coming up in June.

Original jpf- I totally agree with you. Brad said in an interview last year, I think in Esquire, that his leading man persona had only a few more years. He has always excelled in roles in which he was not a "hollywood hunk" like "12 Monkeys" and "Fight Club". He plays a truely unlikable outlaw in the upcoming AJJBCRF and it has been said that this is a film that he really wanted to do. He changed his appearance almost totally to play JJames, with a significant weight loss and dark hair, and he ignored all the lies said about the change in his appearance. He now has a partner in Angie who "has his back" and supports his choices, whatever they are. He just seems to be the "real Brad", like experimenting with dark hair/styles this year (after completing AJJ), dressing however he wants to without caring what others say, traveling with angie and the kids, and living and enjoying life on his own terms. It’s almost as if he has been wearing a mask for years and the mask is now gone. That’s what happens when you are in a relationship with someone in which it appears that there is much love, rock solid trust, mutual respect, the ability to compromise, and acceptance and support of each other’s differences.

I met Brad Pitt once and he was the complete gentleman. Almost kind of shy to be honest. I have never met Jolie. But Pitt, very nice.Many stars here in Hollywood aren’t so it was nice to see.

He had dinner with the president an all US supporters, and marched in their rally with his dad in DC. I flew to the west coast and joined forces at the University. Yes, many University’s had rallys yesterday. So nice to come home and then see Angelina putting in her 2 cents. What happened to the "No child left behind" policy? What Ms. Jolie is saying is that if there is such a policy like that, then let it be exactly what it is by supporting other less fortunate people. When people have education on a number of basic issues, the spread of AIDS and the likes will be reduced, because people will know how to address the issues. Either way you go with this couple they are generating a lot of money. They’ve generated so much money for the American economy, through their movies and tabloids sales etc. They are right now generating money for the African government through tourism. They connect even more with government leaders than most government officials. Ten years down the road, God willing Ms. Jolie will still be helping the less fortune and the results she gets out of her efforts will tell the rest of the story, no matter what side of the fence you are now.I like the fact that she’s already reaping the friuts of her labour. It’s inner peace and happiness.
