Recently, I took my 13-year-old daughter Maddy to a New York City event honoring Angelina Jolie. Every parent will relate to the fact that Maddy often finds the world of celebrity magazines more interesting than the world of her father—which in my case centers on the United Nations and its work fighting poverty. That night Angelina brought those two worlds together. Maddy was awed by how Angelina used her celebrity to lift all of us beyond the glamour of a Manhattan ballroom and make us confront the grim realities of poverty in the farthest corners of the globe.
That ability to transcend worlds has something to do with Angelina’s movie-star charisma—but it also says something about her diligence and grit. Angelina, 30, spends a great deal of time in the developing world, visiting refugee camps, speaking and listening to the men, women and children she is working to help. Those people, Angelina explained, "have seen so much, they’ve felt so much pain—lost more than anyone could bear, and yet they contain joy of life and appreciation for small things we often forget." It was a further indication of Angelina’s humanity that she stopped to listen and talk to Maddy as the city’s power brokers hovered impatiently, awaiting their brush with celebrity.
Angelina’s commitment as goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has pushed her to speak out about root causes—economic failure and lack of justice. She urged me relentlessly to meet her last year during a stopover at an airport where our paths happened to be crossing, so that I could brief her ahead of her appearance at a big international meeting. It is typical of her. The subject was the Millennium Development Goals—a set of objectives agreed upon by the world’s governments. They range from eradicating poverty to reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS. As always, she wanted to be prepared—not just to share impressions of poverty but to be able to speak seriously to the issues. Angelina went on to make a film for MTV on a village in Kenya, where a pilot project is under way to fight poverty, hunger and disease.
That blending of the activist and the performer, not on the set but in the African bush, reflects her determination to stick with a subject, immerse herself in it, make it part of her life—and then bring her public with her. It is celebrity advocacy at its most effective, most intelligent and most sincere. For that, she has my enduring respect and gratitude—and Maddy’s. (More pictures in the gallery!)

It amazes me how many people claim that AJ somehow manipulates the media for her benefit, but when asked how it benefits her there are no logical responses…do you think she needs more media attention to keep her A listing status up? or perhaps you believe that she gets endorsements from her interviews? Hmmm:Jolie named top 100 - She was put forward by one of the Heads of the organization she represents (UN). An organization that has to protect their image when it comes to their reps with growing smut publicity as we’ve seen the past month. Others on the top 100 were admired by people completely outside of their realm.Jolie most beautiful person by People Mag- Word has it that People was given rights for the 1st baby photo. Cindy G. has supposedly been in extensive talks w/ them. Could People Mag be helping in Jolie’s image campaign by naming her 1st on the list, as recompense for being given 1st shot of the baby? MOST BEAUTIFUL FAMILY - The pics used for this title are the posed happy family pics from Hello mag which Jolie commissioned (Hello Mag even wrote that the photos were posed)Dateline Interview - How coincidental. This interview and the pics w/ Curry in Africa comes right after they plead for their privacy, say they just want to be left alone, and a bunch of negative articles are published about Jolie the person. The queen of media manipulation has been working on overdrive these past few weeks!

There was an informative article on Angelina and third world adoptions in the National Ledger on Saturday. The title "Angelina Jolie Needs a Real Understanding of Third World Children" is unfortunate and not indicative of the contents of the piece.

All celebs need a positive image. It’s a fact, in Hollywood image is everything. I guess people, esp. BAMZ haters, are so used to PR manipulation (cough cough JenJen and Stephen Huvane cough cough) that they believe that everything Angie and Brad do are parts of a PR ploy. People magazine might do that, but I highly doubt that Time is will let PR people pull strings. Besides, who is Angie’s PR person? It has been said time and time again she has no publicist, she only has Holly Goline, her friend and personal assistant.

Let her have her so-called career, esp. since she sacrificed Braddy and having a family for it. Let her continue making movies and be a tax write-off for film studios and production companies. Just ignore it when it comes out (as will a lot of people) and let the three weeks pass (week 1, promoting movie in all TV entertainment programs like Today, GMA, ET, Access Hollywood, etc etc, week 2 actual movie coming out, and week 3, said moving going to video).
Time Magazine has listed Angelina in Heroes and Icons in the 100 most influential people. She is indeed a hero championing the causes of global education for all children, the plight of people in warn torn countries facing genocide like Darfur, the needs of people in countries destroyed by natural disaster like Pakistan, and other impoverished countries like Cambodia to name a few.
