Brangelina Airport
Time Magazine released their TIME 100, a list of global icons –100 men and women whose power, talent or moral example is transforming our world. Angelina Jolie was listed under "Heroes & Pioneers" and an article by Deputy Secretary-General of the U.N. Mark Malloch Brown was posted…
Recently, I took my 13-year-old daughter Maddy to a New York City event honoring Angelina Jolie. Every parent will relate to the fact that Maddy often finds the world of celebrity magazines more interesting than the world of her father—which in my case centers on the United Nations and its work fighting poverty. That night Angelina brought those two worlds together. Maddy was awed by how Angelina used her celebrity to lift all of us beyond the glamour of a Manhattan ballroom and make us confront the grim realities of poverty in the farthest corners of the globe.
That ability to transcend worlds has something to do with Angelina’s movie-star charisma—but it also says something about her diligence and grit. Angelina, 30, spends a great deal of time in the developing world, visiting refugee camps, speaking and listening to the men, women and children she is working to help. Those people, Angelina explained, "have seen so much, they’ve felt so much pain—lost more than anyone could bear, and yet they contain joy of life and appreciation for small things we often forget." It was a further indication of Angelina’s humanity that she stopped to listen and talk to Maddy as the city’s power brokers hovered impatiently, awaiting their brush with celebrity.
Angelina’s commitment as goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has pushed her to speak out about root causes—economic failure and lack of justice. She urged me relentlessly to meet her last year during a stopover at an airport where our paths happened to be crossing, so that I could brief her ahead of her appearance at a big international meeting. It is typical of her. The subject was the Millennium Development Goals—a set of objectives agreed upon by the world’s governments. They range from eradicating poverty to reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS. As always, she wanted to be prepared—not just to share impressions of poverty but to be able to speak seriously to the issues. Angelina went on to make a film for MTV on a village in Kenya, where a pilot project is under way to fight poverty, hunger and disease.
That blending of the activist and the performer, not on the set but in the African bush, reflects her determination to stick with a subject, immerse herself in it, make it part of her life—and then bring her public with her. It is celebrity advocacy at its most effective, most intelligent and most sincere. For that, she has my enduring respect and gratitude—and Maddy’s. (More pictures in the gallery!)

# 377 | jessie - voted? VOTED? This was just another subjective decision made by magazine editors. This was NOT a vote by the public. If you want to be led around by a ring in your nose installed by various and sundry pubs (and remember People is just a slightly higher end tabloid) the go right ahead. But don’t expect me to embrace your opinions?
# 394 | PLS educate Jolie |Why did the author not touch the effect of lack of education on terrorism … considering that countering terrorism it seems is the USA’s number one priority these days. Why are there some people in third world countries easily swayed to terrorism? Why dictators able to manipulate the people easily? I do have my own opinions on the advantages of education and th ill-effects of brought about by illeteracy … which are not necessarily similar to taht espouse by the author.
# 398 | JensMOMisHOMELESS I still am endorsing the Independent party’s ticket for you as PRESIDENT!!!Here is an update re: the Sundanese deadline that ended last night. This is what all the "IMAGE" postering was about……http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_3770554READ IT!!!!!l Pls educate lEmil Faber, the fictional founder of the college in "Animal House," might disagree. Faber supposedly said that "Knowledge is Good."SAY NO MORE!!!! You got to be kidding…….FABER COLLEGE was founded in 1904 by Emil Faber, philanthropist, father of the modern American lead pencil and brother of Germany’s Eberhard Faber. The campus, nestled in Pennsylvania’s beautiful Saquatashog river valley, was once the site of the original Faber Pencil Works. The pencil mill was built in Faber because of the town’s happy proximity to a natural graphite quarry, forests of virgin pencilwood trees, and plentiful wild eraser-root. As the vogue for lead pencils grew, Emil Faber prospered. Now rich and powerful, he still regretted never having received a college diploma. Thus he funded the construction of FABER COLLEGE in the town he founded, and was soon granted an honorary doctorate in education from the college which, then as now, bears his name, Faber. The guy is DEAD.
#398 JenMomisHOMELES,This boils down to one thing sour grapes. These people can’t stand it that something postive is being said about Angelina. When Star magazine had stories printed about the bustup of Brad and Angelina they were so happy, but when those stories were proven to be lies they have to find something else to complain about. It’s just killing these people that Bamz+1 is happy.I hope Jen and Vince are happy as well, but I do have reservations about Vince being married and a family man.Hey I might be wrong and he might actually like changing diapers.People need to let go of the past and move forward. It’s really sick to sit around everyday wishing bad fortune on someone else, especially someone you don’t even know.I am a true believer that when you wish bad things for others, the bad things will instead happen to you.
What happened to the "No child left behind" policy? What Ms. Jolie is saying is that if there is such a policy like that, then let it be exactly what it is by supporting other less fortunate people. When people have education on a number of basic issues, the spread of AIDS and the likes will be reduced, because people will know how to address the issues. I think it is simple and straight forward.
# 395 | PlS Educate cont.and what might be the educated editor of this article suggest to help in solving the chaos that surround us: war, famine, genocide, AIDS…write an article in front of his computer and criticize people such as angie for trying to help…why don’t you and your editor go to Darfur and tell those people that Americans don’t care if they got education…they should ask their government to educate them as you and this editor don’t care about them ha??? stupid twat and tell your editor to get up from his butt and go on the field himself….sanctimonous hypocrites!!
#405 you,This issue is simple and straight forward, but certain people make it complicated.Education is the key and every child should have one.
Either way you go with this couple they are generating a lot of money. They’ve generated so much money for the American economy, through their movies and tabloids sales etc. They are right now generating money for the African government through tourism. They connect even more with government leaders than most government officials. Ten years down the road, God willing Ms. Jolie will still be helping the less fortune and the results she gets out of her efforts will tell the rest of the story, no matter what side of the fence you are now.I like the fact that she’s already reaping the friuts of her labour. It’s inner peace and happiness.
ALSO….l PLS EDUCATE JOLIE lThe author of your Pittsburgh Tribune is a ‘Columnist" and NOT an Educator. He is also been a known in the past for being an " *******" for his columns.Yea why didn’t he ask some educators for his opinionated column.? These guys are political gossips with an agenda. The WHOLE point of the rallies was For the USA government to put pressure on the DICTATORS!!!! Like we did in the Balkans…and in Cambodia. Dimitri has his own agenda.
395 Pl. educate.AJ’s campaign is for global education. She is asking the world to provide education for the future generation. These kids must learn skills to survive, provide for family and be a good citizen. The US , a democracy with tons of money still have school problems . . Some of these needy countries have democratic government but because their natural resources are under utilized and all they have are antiquated machineries.THis is why education .,even the basic ones is a necessity."Don’t give them fish, show them how to fish".Now for the Dictators. If we can all wipe them out of the face of the earth, the better for mankind.SAd but it seems war is inevitable just to take one brute out.-SADDAM. JOlie said she is only an actress trying to help. She is learning and keeping the cause in the front burner. The message is for the world. YOur Euro, yens, peso, rubbles , sucres, rials etc. will all be appreciated. And of course US. dollars.
# 395 | PlS EducateYou quote some small time writer from excuse me, Pittsburg who tried to get into Google search engine by spewing a 3rd rate speculative article on Jolie, to counter Time, NBC, BBC, CNN all combined. Yes we feel sorry for you haters. Definitely desperate.
I hope you all know thet OSAMA Bin Laden is also behind this move in the Sudan to fight the proposed UN PRESENCE."Years of fighting between ethnic groups and Arab militias in western Sudan have left at least 180,000 people dead and about 2 million homeless. Darfur’s violence recently spilled into neighboring Chad and threatens to escalate: Osama bin Laden last week urged his followers to go to Sudan to fight a proposed U.N. presence."THIS NOT A JOKE. IT IS A HOLOCAUST. GET INVOLVED. DO SOMETHING. KNOCK OFF THE BS ON ANGELINA AND HER PRIMAGE. Ok I will stop secreaming. Just so pisses me off……
NAMIBIA - In Namibia, at the edge of southern Africa’s vast Kalihari desert, a very pregnant Angelina Jolie emerged from a private vacation with Brad Pitt and her two adopted children to advocate for 100 million kids across the planet who can’t go to school — either because of war, lack of opportunity, or crushing poverty.1. Angelina Jolie: People often look at people in situations like this and they think that they are not exactly like us and that they look at them a little differently—that they live in a shanty town. But these people are very smart and they take care of their families.Ann Curry, Dateline co-anchor: They love their children. Jolie: They love their children.Curry: And they want them to go to school…Jolie: And they very much want them to go to school. According to studies by the Global Campaign for Education, every extra year of school for children in developing countries increases their wage earning potential and decreases their likelihood of getting sick. Jolie: You could teach them young about hygiene, you could teach them young about protecting themselves from AIDS, you could teach them young about how to take care of their kids, you could teach them young about vaccinations. If every kid was in school every year 700,000 less people would get AIDS. 1. Curry: So education can be not just life-changing but life-saving.Jolie: Absolutely.Curry: Why do you care so much?Jolie: Just because I know my kids, I think of Zahara, she is from a country where 6 million kids don’t go to school every year — just in her country alone. It’s just really tough. Her mother died of AIDS and so they wouldn’t have had any funds to send her to school. Curry: So she would have been the exact child you are trying to help.Jolie: And I know her I know how smart she is and I know what a great lady she is going to be. I know that there are so many girls out there like her that aren’t going to get that chance just because we haven’t figure it out in the world to figure out that education should be free…We visited the 30-year-old Angelina in Namibia’s Mondesa township. Where we sat down in a small two room school house and discussed education. Curry: This is a moral challenge, in your view.1. Jolie: Yeah.Curry: About our stepping up for those in need.Jolie: It’s moral, and it’s also—it’s also smart, you know? All these poor countries, not just Africa, bu
hey guys, sign this petition to get rid of the fugly maniston:http://www.petitiononline.com/matchyg/petition.html
398 - jenmomhomeless - Damn good post, Very well said. Thank you for posting it..
Moi Jade, Jjoy, Be Sane, You, Lotte, The Real Lou, Orginal jpf….You guys are amazing. I am giving you a standing ovation. Wow!No Child left Behind should mean NO child left behind. This was what she said an that’s what she is pushing. She’s never professed to be an expert, so I don’t see the point of this article. This is another attempt at discrediting her efforts.
i don`t like jen but brad loved her. i don`t undersatnd why some of brad & angei fans hate her. i hope she will be well. now they walk different ways. bless them.
JensIsHomeless((((((((((((((((CLAPPING))))))))))))Wonderful post. Thanks for that.
Just in case anyone went to that website for a petition against Jennifer Aniston I did not sign it nor would I. This is cruel and unacceptable. Jennifer deserves to live her life and follow her dreams wether successful or not. ( FYI I was not the Jade that signed that petition and I hope others do not sign it either.)I personally am not a JA fan however would not stoop to this leveltowards anyone. C’mon……be fair.
#419 / Moi JadeI doubt anyone took it seriously….or should I say I hope no one took it seriously. It is not our call to make, the most anyone can do is not to see her movies. The petition’s got to be a joke.
# 410 | lotte - I happen to be from Pittsburgh, so please don’t belittle our fine city. Thank you. :)There are plenty of others who feel that Jolie does not speak well for OUR causes, and that the celebrity fans who have embraced Jolie should NOT think that this is HER personal cause simply because she climbed on the bandwagon. Many of us would rather have more articulate and informed spokespeople.
some people hate brad & angei because they are jen fans. sometimes i think the world is getting crazy. i feel sorry for them.
367 - is Friends with Money, still even at the theathers, I mean, after 3 weeks her movies are generally, off to video..
421 | ditto edu-Jolie | So what are U and others who are articulate and informed doing??? : )
l ditto edu-Jolie |I don’t think anyone meant to belittle your great city. The columnist Dimitri however did not make a good stand against Jolie IMO. This is OUR cause too and personally I love that Angelinia Jolie is drawing attention. Like the people in Namibia state, she is just an ordinary person who cares. She doesn’t claim to be a spokesperson or a political public relations agent. She is a movie star and I think most of us understand that. He willingness tohelp in regions and on issues are her personal desires. If they benefit from public attention and peoples fascination with her personal life…..so be it. It does not make her a spokesperson. You’re at the wrong website for that. Try your local newspaperfor links to your city’s representitives and fellow education "spokesmen" on education issues and hopefully it will lead you tooto get involved. That’s the whole point.
