Recently, I took my 13-year-old daughter Maddy to a New York City event honoring Angelina Jolie. Every parent will relate to the fact that Maddy often finds the world of celebrity magazines more interesting than the world of her father—which in my case centers on the United Nations and its work fighting poverty. That night Angelina brought those two worlds together. Maddy was awed by how Angelina used her celebrity to lift all of us beyond the glamour of a Manhattan ballroom and make us confront the grim realities of poverty in the farthest corners of the globe.
That ability to transcend worlds has something to do with Angelina’s movie-star charisma—but it also says something about her diligence and grit. Angelina, 30, spends a great deal of time in the developing world, visiting refugee camps, speaking and listening to the men, women and children she is working to help. Those people, Angelina explained, "have seen so much, they’ve felt so much pain—lost more than anyone could bear, and yet they contain joy of life and appreciation for small things we often forget." It was a further indication of Angelina’s humanity that she stopped to listen and talk to Maddy as the city’s power brokers hovered impatiently, awaiting their brush with celebrity.
Angelina’s commitment as goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has pushed her to speak out about root causes—economic failure and lack of justice. She urged me relentlessly to meet her last year during a stopover at an airport where our paths happened to be crossing, so that I could brief her ahead of her appearance at a big international meeting. It is typical of her. The subject was the Millennium Development Goals—a set of objectives agreed upon by the world’s governments. They range from eradicating poverty to reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS. As always, she wanted to be prepared—not just to share impressions of poverty but to be able to speak seriously to the issues. Angelina went on to make a film for MTV on a village in Kenya, where a pilot project is under way to fight poverty, hunger and disease.
That blending of the activist and the performer, not on the set but in the African bush, reflects her determination to stick with a subject, immerse herself in it, make it part of her life—and then bring her public with her. It is celebrity advocacy at its most effective, most intelligent and most sincere. For that, she has my enduring respect and gratitude—and Maddy’s. (More pictures in the gallery!)

I am not a fan of Angelina.Periodically I pass through several blogs, comment on some, and then spend a bit more time on news related to Angelina. You may ask why I do this if I don’t like her? The answer is two-fold:1. She is a freak. I follow her news in the same way I followed Michael Jackson’s for a while. It’s amusing. Interesting to see what other quirky thing she has done, and what other manipulative way she has maneuvered her fan base. 2. I also find VERY amusing the AJ bloggers themselves and the intensity in idolizing a woman compelled to build herself up as a sort of saint…who has to arrange to be in the limelight everytime she does something positive or has an image adjustment to make. Few other blogs also have the bloggers conversing among themselves which is why there are so many entries! If she wasn’t good looking, her fan base would probably dwindle because the enigma and idolic qualities would no longer be there. She would just be another one of the 100’s of celebrities who contribute to society.

It seems strange that people pick on the fact that the hello pics were’posed’.Yes, rather posed ones that the ones than the paparrazzi would post with their long lenses. They knew that the media were after pictures of them and decided to give them what they wanted but on their terms, with a media outlet that would show them respect.No tabloid trash could top those hot pics.i’d rather see beautifully posed but clear pics than 100 snaps taken from a distance. It was their way of meeting the press half way and still retianing their privacy. Good Luck to BAMZ+1.We luv you all!!!

Can’t understand why you are making it a personal mission to hope that Aniston’s movies all fail. She was a top T.V. actress for many years, earning $1 mill per episode for a lot of episodes. Far more people watch t.v. than go to the movies so what’s your point other than to bring Jen Aniston down in order to boost your idol? Should that even be necessary if she’s all you claim?

I find it very interesting that no matter what Angelina says, there are those who are just dead set on maligning her, hating her to the point of disrespectfulness. Why? What has this woman done that is so horrible that you would rather spend your time disliking her instead of her words and understanding what she’s trying to say? Yes she doesn’t speak the usual political jargon and in fact has stressed time and time again that she doesn’t have a college education and that yes she sometimes finds that a bit daunting when put up against those who do. But big deal! So what if she doesn’t. So what if she doesn’t peak as you would have her. Does that mean her message was any less poignant? Because she didn’t blather on and on about Namibia’s national deficit or its GNP that the idea of helping the less fortunate completely skipped by you? She’s not setting herself up for ‘sainthood’ as one poster here put it. She’s simply trying to help those who need it. Would you begrudge these children and adults the education, food, medicines and support that we can give them, just because you don’t like the messenger? If you say no…that you just don’t need Angelina Jolie or any other star (I’ll just take a guess that you dislike other stars doing this as well, because if not then that would really show you as a petty human being) to bring these plights to your attention, then fine ignore it all, get up and go help. If you already are, then good for you. These issues ARE NOT new ones. We ignored them and now stars like Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Ashley Judd, Denzel Washington, Oprah and other stars are forcing them to the forefront where they belong. These plights (Genocide, famine, AIDS, Education, inhumane acts) have been going on for centuries in some cases and no one…not one country has tried to really put an end to them (Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Serbia, Darfur, Pnom Penh, Ethiopia…hell even slavery went on for centuries) Point is these issues won’t go away just because we don’t think of them. They rage on, they are like some sort of contagion and unless we stop them, they’ll keep spreading. And that is why you feel the need to go on so many blogs and spend your time and energy to go on your computer, go to a website where you know there are alot angie fans, than read the article and posts about her, and then feel the need to comment on how she is the freak. What kind of world do you live?! If you think she is a manipulator, then good for you, the majority of us here don’t. So why go on a site where you know your comments will be ignored and disregarded because no one really cares HOW AMUSED you are by Jolie. Angelina is not the freak, you are.And while i’m on my little rant, when in the hell did it become such a crime or a moral taboo to be different and live your life by your own rules, and not by the rules that people want to dictate on to you. good moviei agree with you. but she want to be not tv star but movie star. i think sometime she will be movie star and win oscar. she is full of ambition. it`s good. she is rich and earns $9millions per a movie. i don`t like her but i respect her i prefer dreaming people to ambitious peopleand this is why i am angie fan
