Time Magazine released their TIME 100, a list of global icons –100 men and women whose power, talent or moral example is transforming our world.  Angelina Jolie was listed under "Heroes & Pioneers" and an article by Deputy Secretary-General of the U.N. Mark Malloch Brown  was posted…

Recently, I took my 13-year-old daughter Maddy to a New York City event honoring Angelina Jolie. Every parent will relate to the fact that Maddy often finds the world of celebrity magazines more interesting than the world of her father—which in my case centers on the United Nations and its work fighting poverty. That night Angelina brought those two worlds together. Maddy was awed by how Angelina used her celebrity to lift all of us beyond the glamour of a Manhattan ballroom and make us confront the grim realities of poverty in the farthest corners of the globe.

That ability to transcend worlds has something to do with Angelina’s movie-star charisma—but it also says something about her diligence and grit. Angelina, 30, spends a great deal of time in the developing world, visiting refugee camps, speaking and listening to the men, women and children she is working to help. Those people, Angelina explained, "have seen so much, they’ve felt so much pain—lost more than anyone could bear, and yet they contain joy of life and appreciation for small things we often forget." It was a further indication of Angelina’s humanity that she stopped to listen and talk to Maddy as the city’s power brokers hovered impatiently, awaiting their brush with celebrity.

Angelina’s commitment as goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has pushed her to speak out about root causes—economic failure and lack of justice. She urged me relentlessly to meet her last year during a stopover at an airport where our paths happened to be crossing, so that I could brief her ahead of her appearance at a big international meeting. It is typical of her. The subject was the Millennium Development Goals—a set of objectives agreed upon by the world’s governments. They range from eradicating poverty to reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS. As always, she wanted to be prepared—not just to share impressions of poverty but to be able to speak seriously to the issues. Angelina went on to make a film for MTV on a village in Kenya, where a pilot project is under way to fight poverty, hunger and disease.

That blending of the activist and the performer, not on the set but in the African bush, reflects her determination to stick with a subject, immerse herself in it, make it part of her life—and then bring her public with her. It is celebrity advocacy at its most effective, most intelligent and most sincere. For that, she has my enduring respect and gratitude—and Maddy’s. (More pictures in the gallery!)

# 490 | ((chanel)) | Thanks Chanel some nice videos I haven’ seen yet. Best :)))

# 497 | ((chanel)) thanks for all the links. It’s to hard to read and I am sure someday someone will asks her.

487 wake upDon’t worry .We passed our history. Knew about about africa before NAMIBIA/DARFUR.AJ has been with UN ffor 5/6 yrs. , visiting several countries in the continent .She is made a movie there, visited the refugee camps aand havevarious projects all directed towards helping the needy. In one of those projects, sewing machines were given to women, trained them so they can be employed, make their own clothes and train others. Also to give them self esteem/confidence.Maybe none of their creations will make the runways of the fashion industry.SO what. The coattail rider tag should be attached to GC.IMO he has a political agenda. His father ran for an elective office in Kentucky but lost. Tell me !!!According to some reports NAMIBIA has gottenmore web search since AJ/BP arrived.I will not be surprised if it hasn’t reach the classroom as long as AFrica is the topic.DARFUR was mentioned by JOLIEat DAVOS early this year. She said focus on the issue not her celebrity. If you were informed as you said good for you. Keep on reading . I guarantee you there’s more than beauty in her personslity. CHEERS

# 348 | AJ manipulator? I know this person is baiting us, but I’m going to respond anyway! I do like Lainey, but I don’t always agree with her. In this case she doesn’t explain exactly how it is that she thinks AJ managed to get herself onto the Time 100 list….and neither do you. All celebs manipulate the media, but there’s only so much they can do when it comes to awards and citations. Nobody blackmailed Time to put AJ on the list. She didn’t buy her way onto the list. She was put on the list on the merits of her work as a humanitarian. It’s just a shame that her detractors can’t admit that she is sincere in her commitment to the underprivileged. How sad for you.

African Girl @ 05/01/2006 at 7:30 pm

I am sorry but this is a long post. I have to address the # 394 | PLS educate Jolie Post. The article states that “Education does not necessarily convey knowledge”Fine but it does open one to the possibility of acquiring knowledge. On the flip side, let’s take a look at what the lack of education can do…Lack of Education has played a major role in the making of African dictators. It comes in two folds – Lack of Education on the part of those being governed and those doing the governing. As Estelle as pointed out, it is quite easy to see how illiterates can be easily manipulated (Thanks Estelle), what I want to focus on is the lack of education on the part of the dictators themselves and how detrimental it can be. Idi Amin – A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned a movie “The Rise and Fall of Idi Amin” Please if you have the time, check it out. Idi Amin was the president of Uganda from 1971 to 1979, during which time he’s said to be responsible for 300,000 to 500, 000 death. This man had no formal education, was unable to read and write yet he was able to preside on a country for 8 years. He gave himself the title “His Excellency President for life, Field Marshal Al Hadji (A title given to African Muslims who’ve visited the holy land. It conveys respect) Doctor (of What?) Idi Amin, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea and conqueror of the British Empire in Africa, In General and Uganda in Particular” (NO KIDDING!)Now tell me if an educated man would give himself such a title? He was so self conscious of his lack of Education, he terrorized people he felt looked down on him. Many of Idi Amin’s antics were ascribed to his lack of education. It is certainly true that he was sensitive on this point: when he addressed the students a University and they laughed at him for the bumpkin that he was, he took a swift revenge. The university, which had until then been one of the leading universities in Africa, was comprehensively destroyed. Amin taught the students to laugh on the other side of their faces and very soon, many of them were dead .There is nothing worse than an illiterate with POWER. One would have to wonder why the Ugandans allowed him to do this to them, the answer is quite simple: 1) They had witnesses his brutality and 2) He managed to convince them he was working on making Uganda the first Black state in the continent and having just been under the Rule of the British, the accepted it. They didn’t know any better and they also saw him as one of them. There is nothing worse than an aggressive illiterate leading other illiterates. In the political circles he is known “As the illiterate and gluttonous Buffoon” Idi Amin was not the only dictator who rules ruthlessly because of his lack of formal education Macias Nguema, Former President of Equatorial Guinea had serious issues because of his lack of Education. He had everyone who wore spectacles murdered: for spectacles equaled short sight and short sight meant intelligence and having read too much. Come on! Can you tell me that Education wouldn’t have played a part in saving these poor people’s lives?Samuel Doe is Another Semi illiterate, the man who can be credited for the fall of Liberia. He made his own rules as he went along….the funniest and by far one of the strangest thing was he ordered his date of birth changed because the constitution called that no one under the age of 35 could run for office. Seriously! He went to sleep having the birthday 1951 and woke up the next day with his birthday as 1950. Listed under his credit and Major achievement are the words “Brutal dictator- extremely oppressive and conducted mass killings of opponents” There is none as dangerous as an illiterate who wants to prove a point. As for combating poverty, I don’t think there is one particular answer to this. It is a combination of a lot of things but he have to understand that Education is the first step to doing this. In my opinion, this is the Basis of the Global Campaign for Education.Africa, in some ways, was destroyed by uneducated men, is it farfetched to think that EDUCATION will play a role in restoring it back?

Good one to all BAM+1 fans,To Profesor, thank you for your fair and great point of view. It is refreshing and good for this blog to have such of mature opinion. Like guli said, you are more than welcome to post on the multicultural family site.Que Viva La BAMZ+1!

So back to our mental images…She is giggling and falls off the bed from laughing so hard and BP goes " are you kidding me", "NO, just trying to decide whether to have a girl or boy gun unless you stop teasing me" OK, we need Moi Jade and AG to continue this saga…

African Girl @ 05/01/2006 at 7:50 pm

Hey Guli, I had to laugh at your post because I suddenly had a picture in my mind - Stroke of midnight on Oct 2, 2006. Brad turns to Angie and says, "Okay, the divorce is final. Throw away the birth control and let’s commence with the baby-making!" Clearly she did not disagree! # 493 | Passing Through lmao….that image isstuck in my head now.

# 507 | COLD HARD MATH - And so do I. I have to say by reading her book Notes of My travels, I even admire and love her more, like she said on Dateline, she is not trying to save the world. Angie you my girl, you are incredible. I knew about the situation in Africa before but because of AJ I now know more about it and are in a situation to do something to help.

Estelle, my post #508 was mostly to you, sorry for not posting to whom I was responding to. Oh well we all have our days :-)

Original Curious @ 05/01/2006 at 8:30 pm

# 505 | African GirlWow. What an amazing compilation of how lack of education has affected just a few of Africa’s countries. I remember Idi Amin, but I had NO idea of his full "title"! In my family, education was always taken seriously, and so I have always felt that it can bring wonderful things to people. I was watching Angelina’s MTV Diary yesterday and was just so overhwhelmed by the little things [or so they seem to western eyes] that can change lives. I particularly marveled over Dr. Sachs sending the first email with a young boy. Here we sit, day and night, practically taking the internet for granted, and this village was getting it’s first taste! To see the differences in what a little education [even on farming] can do to help a village is mindblowing. It makes me even angrier at my country and it’s misplaced values. Do you realize the GOOD we could have done with the money [not to mention good will] Bush has squandered? It make me so angry I can hardly express myself. What is going on in here today? All of the sudden people aren’t calling Angelina bad names having to do with the Pitt divorce - now they are accusing her of applying for sainthood? I just don’t get it. She’s been interested in UN issues for years, and now SHE’s the latecomer and GC knows more? I honestly don’t get it. If I don’t like an actor, I don’t go to their blogs [GMD comes to mind]. As someone so brilliantly said a few pages back, I certainly don’t go in and poke sticks at the people who DO like him/them.I’m making a pledge [to myself at any rate] to not respond to them - other than perhaps a yawn.

Great post #505 - thanks AG for some balance on the education/knowledge comment. I am always amazed that as soon as someone (like AJ) tries do do a little, (although in her case I regard it as a lot) they are criticised by many because they haven’t done absolutely everything! How warped is that!Every person’s effort to help in any way should be applauded - and whether it is for totally selfless purposes, or there is an element of opportunism in it (which I absolutely don’t beleive of AJ & BP - there has to be much easier ways to self-promote!) it is still worthwhile if it brings public attention to needy issues. Just look at the consciousness-raising that has happened recently with regard to Dafur! A favourite saying in our home is "The squeeky wheel gets the oil!" Governments are no different - they won’t take action over difficult issues unless people speak up!So here’s to A & B and all those other ’self-seeking’ celebs!

African Girl @ 05/01/2006 at 8:34 pm

517 | EstelleEstelle, Jeez it seems like forever. I am hopping from thread to thread…the last four anyway. Is it weird that i feel this compulsion to catch up? Oh, Thanks so very much for the transcript. I still can’thelp laughing and giggling with her….is that weirder? She is so happy!!!

# 519 | Estelle | Hey there, she made the first cut, but in two weeks 12 more girls will be cut. See, I want my kids to be happy, but if things like not making a team, who cares But it is so important to them cause they are so young. In away I want them to learn that you do not get everything you wish in life, and sometimes there are disappointments, BUT those are the ones that make you stronger, more determined and face reality (hey I should give a lecture to the haters here ) :))

# 522 | African Girl - I know, me too, just to see her smile, my mouth start to smile too…silly me, for no reason I have this silly smiley face….regarding the thread, I got on this morning, and this thread already has over 300 post, I’m glad with the new pages system from JJ….THANK YOU JJ ( I forgot to do that, sorry)…now I can skip through and just go to the last page…

w/o failures there’s no success =)
