Recently, I took my 13-year-old daughter Maddy to a New York City event honoring Angelina Jolie. Every parent will relate to the fact that Maddy often finds the world of celebrity magazines more interesting than the world of her father—which in my case centers on the United Nations and its work fighting poverty. That night Angelina brought those two worlds together. Maddy was awed by how Angelina used her celebrity to lift all of us beyond the glamour of a Manhattan ballroom and make us confront the grim realities of poverty in the farthest corners of the globe.
That ability to transcend worlds has something to do with Angelina’s movie-star charisma—but it also says something about her diligence and grit. Angelina, 30, spends a great deal of time in the developing world, visiting refugee camps, speaking and listening to the men, women and children she is working to help. Those people, Angelina explained, "have seen so much, they’ve felt so much pain—lost more than anyone could bear, and yet they contain joy of life and appreciation for small things we often forget." It was a further indication of Angelina’s humanity that she stopped to listen and talk to Maddy as the city’s power brokers hovered impatiently, awaiting their brush with celebrity.
Angelina’s commitment as goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has pushed her to speak out about root causes—economic failure and lack of justice. She urged me relentlessly to meet her last year during a stopover at an airport where our paths happened to be crossing, so that I could brief her ahead of her appearance at a big international meeting. It is typical of her. The subject was the Millennium Development Goals—a set of objectives agreed upon by the world’s governments. They range from eradicating poverty to reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS. As always, she wanted to be prepared—not just to share impressions of poverty but to be able to speak seriously to the issues. Angelina went on to make a film for MTV on a village in Kenya, where a pilot project is under way to fight poverty, hunger and disease.
That blending of the activist and the performer, not on the set but in the African bush, reflects her determination to stick with a subject, immerse herself in it, make it part of her life—and then bring her public with her. It is celebrity advocacy at its most effective, most intelligent and most sincere. For that, she has my enduring respect and gratitude—and Maddy’s. (More pictures in the gallery!)

I live in Porltand.. I have been to Caprials many times.. Caprial is there every day, her husband too.. Portland loves Angelina .. We had a huge Darfur rally today.

I just saw on Perezhilton.Com a picture of Maniston playing in the park. PerezHilton called her a man # 199 | Alexanderina +++++++++++++++I’m channeling Lainey here - Do you think it’s a coinknydink that she just HAPPENS to be out playing in the park the day Angie’s Dateline interview airs? JA just can’t seem to help herself. She knows damned good and well that all the world is sitting around waiting for this interview, so she goes out and plays frisbee so everyone can see how over Brad she is and how well she’s moving on with her life. I wonder if she will ever figure out that she’s already lost this pissing contest?

Jared:It’s in my TiVo (Replay TV) but I don’t know how to transport into computer… agh…I am just watching the video and it’s clear Angie got a NEW TATOO, looks like two lines in Sanskrit, on her left upper arm where there used to say "Billy Bob". Maybe it’s a pair with what Brad got on his lower back?

To Alexanderina; I used to live in NYC but I am now living in the San Francisco bay area.
BTW- If anyone is interested, I finally found the Leno video that I watched 2 years ago. Angie mentions Brad and Collin while promoting Alexander and says that Maddox thinks he(Brad) is a warrior since he saw Troy. It is old, so I won’t dig it up unless someone wants to see it !!!

I know talks have been extendted until tuesday and in no small part to the vast outcry from the world, and even if they don’t reach anything workable then, because the world is watching a lot closer now than they did even last month I believe change is in the air for the good. On Caprial, I loved her show until John started on there. He irked me so much that I stopped watching. He’d crack these corny jokes, and plus, she just has presence. I would love her to be on the Foodnetwork "alone".jpf
ha ha John is a dork, Caprial seems to ignore him at the bistro, we noticed that the last time we were there.. As far as Darfur , there was a great feeling at the rally of change I hope and pray for something good to happen in Darfur soon…

guli, you betta whip it out!! :) i for one am interested in that vid…..that reminds me of a clip i watched on youtube (i think) it was of angie and collin promoting alexander on some german tv show, but the interesting part was during the interview, like waiting for translation or something, collin oh-so casually and in a nonchalant manner reached his hand over and started massaging angie’s leg, you could tell he was trying to play it cool, but the motion came off very forward, with more than a little sexual undertone. And it was so funny becasue no sooner than he had touched her leg, Angie shot him this look–her eyes were like daggers, but you could tell she was trying to be discreet b/c they were on tv, but he got the message and stopped right then.
