When Babel, the latest offering from Alejandro González Iñárritu, premieres at the Cannes Film Festival this month, it will be a remarkable moment for Mexican cinema. Before 2000, when the director’s debut, Amores Perros, took Cannes by storm, Mexican films were rarely seen by international audiences. This year, one of Babel ’s main competitors for the Palme d’Or will be Pan’s Labyrinth, by González Iñárritu’s compatriot Guillermo del Toro. That two Mexican films are competing for the most prestigious prize in world cinema is a measure of how far the Mexican industry has come in the past six years.

Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s drama Babel, starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and Gael Garcia Bernal, is currently scheduled to show at Cannes on Tuesday, May 23 and open in limited release on Friday, October 6. I’ve been a BP’s big fan since ‘Thelma & Louise’ and I always believe he is talented actor but he’s too pretty so he has to work harder to prove it. Cate B is the same age as Anniston and the difference between them is so obvious - Cate’s great acting skills and timeless beauty vs Anniston’s sun-dried looks and the "Friends" acting skills. Can you see her acting out the same scene as Cate? She would have tried to pull it off with the classic Anniston crinkled brows and screwed-up mouth! What a nightmare!Hope Cate makes another movie with Brad cos they are GOOD together on-screen!

cate blanchett is awesome. i’ve loved her ever since elizabeth. i think that was the first time i truly got pissed about the oscars. she so deserved best actress. i think i’ve seen just about every film she’s been in except veronica guerin.did you know she’s in benjamin button, another bp project, too?

# 169 | gitane Hey Gitane, ITA about Cate Blanchette getting screwed out of the Oscar for Elizabeth. In a not so ironic twist of fate I believe she lost out that year to one of Brad’s exes - La ***** Paltrow. Paltrow giggled her way through Shakespeare in Love and they called that acting. If she hadn’t been the off-spring of two of HW’s own she wouldn’t have won that award in any year. The girl flat out sucks as an actress…er…she’s better than X, but come on…who isn’t?

# 172 | Passing Throughi was so crushed that year. now, i don’t despise dear gwynnie–she just happens to find herself in films i like, but she did NOT deserve the oscar for getting felt up by joseph fiennes. what pissed me off, and continues to piss me off is that both SIL and Elizabeth were "period" pieces. they had almost identical casts (J. Fiennes and G. Rush were in both), cate acted circles around gwyneth (the line, "i’m married to england now" still gives me chills) and nothing. she got nothing. and gwynnie hadn’t done any acting to that date that even merited her being considered.i really hope that cate gets nominated for this. she’s been brilliant in every film i’ve seen her in. it’s time she got her due. and i hope brad gets nominated right along with her. he should get something for his intense 4 year effort as a devoted husband to a shallow ghoul. oops! broke my promise to not mention x. bad gitane!
# 172 | Passing Through I really have no opinion of GP, and if pressed I’d have to go with dislike, but the one time I ever liked her was when she spent a segment in London with Ross The Intern from Jay Leno’s show. It was so funny, and she was actually "light, airy, and her nostril hairs weren’t visable due to the way she has of sometimes looking down her nose at others."jpf
