SOAPBOX & OFF-TOPIC ALERT# 567 | malaya# 571 | Original CuriousMalaya and Original Curious, it kills me that our society is supposed to be so much more savvy and sophisticated than the past, but yet we’re treated as idiots with all the warnings and safety regulations. It’s a wonder knives are permitted to be sharper than butterknives with the inherent risk of knives. Now mind you, I, too, am all for mandatory seat belts (because a car accident isn’t anything to take lightly as simply tripping or falling…until one is seriously in senior citizen territory and then anything is a danger to one’s life) and prohibition of life-debilitating substances such as lead and asbestos, but regulations practically remove personal responsibility and judgement (as you’ve noted Malaya). I guess that is what happens with haters, they’re spoon fed to be vegetables. Those harpies need to worry about themselves. And they better wear hard hats all the time since they’ve suffered one brain injury too many already. Governments can institute all sorts of childproofing, but one thing they can’t implement are safeguards of what children do to each other. I have several scars from that alone in addition to another bike accident (hey, I’m accident prone, what can I say?). Mind you, I’ll admit I might have done some stupid things when I was young (well, let’s not go into stupid things I’m still doing, k?), but I made it to adulthood without any hospitalization. As a child, I remember a friend puncturing an aerosol can that specifically warned it would explode if punctured. I never done it myself and have no plans to experiment, so I thought the thing was going to blow up. As I looked at my friend thinking "What the hell were you thinking?", I acted as if I were part of a bomb squad tossing it aside far from the garage, where there were lots of flammable material. Luckily, the can never exploded. But I’ll never let that friend have a can opener in one hand and an aerosol can in the other. Paranoia is so easy to implant into our minds with the disclaimers the government requires. But then, the product disclaimers are to cover company asses from litigious class-action civil suits-hungry lawyers. So, that’s the devolution of the nature of our society. And yet, because jobs are still considered the foremost decisive factor, big industries can still lobby to allow health-endangering materials in our country. You think lead and asbestos would be completely banned, but they aren’t. They are still components of American products and foreign imports allowed into the country. Lead is allowed in plastics (notably PVC) to stabilize them. All right, I’m beginning to sound like Ralph Nader so I’ll stop. I make light of it, but I really was annoyed that parents were too negligent with their children to cause them to choke on those lychee gel snacks. To answer your questions on the lychee gel snacks, I’ll describe what I knew of them several years ago before a few toddlers ruined one of my pleasures in life. Lychee gel: a firm jello with a little chunk of fruit that may or may not be lychee itself. The gels were packaged in tiny plastic cups and all contained in a plastic jar (think a gallon-sized mayonnaise jar with a nifty red cap with an embedded handle). It wasn’t the exterior gel that was necessarily delicious but the mysterious fruit chunk that tasted exactly like a lychee. Curiously, I don’t know if even lychee is part of the snack as it’s not even listed as an ingredient. Truth be told, the snack was practically pure sugar. Lots of calories but no fat. But you know how easily I burn calories anyway so I didn’t care. Since the incidents of choking, the manufacturer had to recall the original product. I believe they completely overhauled and reformulated it. So it’s just not the same. "do you want me to mail some to you?"Aaaaah, you’re just trying to smoke me out, aren’t you??? Seriously, that’s awfully sweet of you, but if it ain’t in San Francisco, it’s not going to be found anywhere else in the States.
