Given Vince Vaughn’s recent success with landing punch lines, there was considerable hope that if anybody could inject a little zip into the stagnating romcom, he’d be the guy to pull it off.
And he still might — one of these days.
In the meantime, there’s "The Break-Up," a major disappointment of an anti-romantic comedy for which Vaughn shares producer and story credits in addition to sharing the screen with real-life squeeze Jennifer Aniston.
Bottom Line: Don’t Believe The Hype
That’s one big OUCH from The Hollywood Reporter! BURNED. Will fans flock to theaters for The Break-Up anyway for the former Friends star? I’ll PASS. Even the trailers are not funny. They showed it I watched Da Vinci Code & The Break Up trailer not even funny. People stayed quiet during the whole time of the teaser & just 2 middle-aged women shrieking with joy seeing their idol on the big screen. When you watch a trailer you suppose to be seeing the best scenes & on this one, I just said that’s it? I guess I am saving my hard earned money on this one. Poor Vince I like him in so much. Jen I coudn’t care.

Its funny that # 4 and # 5 are comparing TBU to Da vinci code. C’mon Da Vinci Code comes from all time best selling book, it has a following no matter how bad the movie review would be, and you know the main star is " the Tom Hanks". TBU has the box-office poison Jennifer Aniston and is written only by VV, whose movie hits are always with other bigger stars. TBU needs all the good reviews it can get to be successful.
Vince is not funny. Jen is comedic and talented. She was the reason that TV series is in indefinate repeat…years after it was made.

#30 : The producer is the person in charge of the film. It is just the way it works. They hire everyone. If you have 30 million, you can be a producer too. Then you would be in charge of how your money is spent. The film’s success is ultimately the responsibility of the producer since they are paying and organizing everyone. They can replace people, directors etc…
Opening weekend might draw a few people who think of "Wedding Crashers". THEN THE FULL HORROR of an JA stink bomb will permeate the multiplexes and by the second weekend it will nosedive. They’d better front-load this movie fast to dupe a few people into the theaters. And who cares what "DaVinci Code" has done or not done?! Nothing to do with this turkey.

Too ambitious for TBU fans to compare it to Da Vinci Code. If TBU gets bad review its more likely it will flop.

#36: it’s a double commitment. Often the producer can only negotiate with a studio for financing if high profile talent can sign on with the script. It’s all negotiated through agencies: but the whole studio script paradigm is totally changing now films can be produced and distributed more cheaply thanks to digital technology. More and more foreign films will enter the market place which have been produced independantly and are of high quality.

I’m sure Vaughn’s fans will go out to see it for him but that won’t sustain the boxoffice with X-Men opening today and Cars opening on the 9th.Aniston is annoying enough but when you’re annoying AND have no talent then the public really turns it back on you. I think Pitt got involved with her too soon after his break-up with Paltrow. He admitted in 2001 Vaniety Fair he was a mess and thought about admitting himself to a hospital but went into therapy for a year and a half instead. I think that break up messed with his mind and decision making. He was fixed up w/Aniston and they slept together on their first date and started living together immediatly. It’s a classic case of someone being really lonely and vunerable who gets involved right away when they really shouldn’t. The relationship probably last 2 to 3 years longer then it should of. So unlike the Paltrow break up which was sudden and out of left field for him this marriage was a build up and he was ready to move on. Aniston clearly hasn’t recovered from it and is just now addressing her own responsibility in her marriage ending. Sorry, Plan B was not "their" company. The production company was started originally to produce films for Aniston because she couldn’t get hired. What ended up happening is that she had NO involvement in it, it’s planning, hiring, buying rights to work or even reading the books Brad bought the right to. Plan B was his and Brad Grey’s baby all along.Pitt back in 2003 was making plans to buy her out of the company and leave her with the projects designed for her or that she wanted. He’s done that. The three she has and can’t get greenlighted are part of that agreement. #63 123Friends is on every night because it was a very good show and had SIX actors and great writers making it that way. Look at Seinfeld — great show, but not one of them can find work since. Of the "Friends" who made hit movies, Courtney Cox did it in ensemble Scream movies, Lisa Kudrow did it in ensemble Opposite of Sex (great movie and her best role) and when playing her same TV character in Romy & Michele’s Wedding, and as small part in DeNiro and Billy Crystal’s Analyze This & sequel. Mattew Perry did it when paired with Bruce Willis, but his earlier attempts flopped. Teh others were embarrassments on film. Matt LeBlanc stuck with his same character and couldn’t make it work on TV.Notice how all of them went away from movies, have done theater or just regrouped, waiting for the images of them as their characters to fade to come back. Not overly stuck on herself Jen. And she keeps making a mess of her career and an ass of herself personally with each successive attempt, and dragging down good people with her.

Whoa. Aniston fans can dish it but they can’t take it that’s for sure. To call comments on a message board a trend might be a bit exaggerated. The bottom line with Aniston is that the consumer does not want her or is interested in her. That’s just a fact, a reality by her past 3 flops. Her fans should go out and support her but I think they have and it appears there really isn’t many of them. Vince Vaughn’s fans will help this movie but like Aniston he has a very small window of talent to work with. Not sure people take seriously Vaughn in a non comedy leading role. He always plays the same character in each of his films. In friends JA was only one of 6 actors who had to keep the laughs going for about 20 minutes (if you take out the commercial time. So do the math, each of the "friends" only had to carry the show for 3 onscreen minutes. I would argue that Matt LeBlanc generated twice the number of laughs compared to the others, bringing JA and the rest down to about 2.5 minutes each. So why the hell would anyone think JA can carry a 2 hour film without commercial breaks as a lead actor who is probably onscreen 90% of the time.

Lets approach the question of JA’s talent (or lack of) a little more rationally. Friends was 20 minutes onscreen (taking out commercial time). Six actors shared the time equally, so each of them only had to "carry" the show for about 3.3 minutes. This is even generous, as it leaves no time for guest stars. If you study "Friends", you will see that most of the time all JA do is stand with the crowd with her arms crossed listening to the other characters. So, why does anyone think that JA can carry a 2 hour film as a lead actor who is onscreen 90% of the time. She is famous for one thing….being married to Brad Pitt…if not for that she would be in the same carrer oblivion as the rest of her Friends castmates.

All those movies that ANgie is in, she is reviewed as the best thing in it. When JA is in a movie, she gets scathing reviews. Everytime I see Maniston I dry heave. Her legs look good, but that’s only because she just got surgery on them so she would have a sexy body part to show off. It’s incredible that JA fans are already passing the buck, on behalf of JA, to VV. If the movie bombs, it won’t be totally his fault. If anything, his diehard fans, like me, will go to see the movie, despite the fact the trailers suck and Aniston is in it. That is what you call having a following, people, a concept unknown to Aniston fans, because if they were truly for their girl, it would’ve translated in box office sales, or at least, in rentals. ****, I sat through Be Cool and that sucked! I’m not auditioning for martyrhood, but it seems that if people are fans, they should be fans and support their idols’ efforts.But back to Vince… he had a streak of poor performing box office, like Clay Pigeons and Psycho,but slowly and surely, he rebuilt his career by mixing thing up by being a supporting player. Doing that wasn’t a stretch since it was always the way he approached his career. JA has experience playing supporting parts. It’s just a matter of picking the best parts, small ones, instead of expecting fate to guide her career. It seems to me that attitude, along with talent, dictate success and she and her fans need to stop throwing people (BP, VV, her mother) and projects (Rumor Has It) under the bus whenever they don’t get the results that they want. Hell, George Clooney took responsibility for that Batman movie and people liked and respected him for it. At this point, I don’t think Aniston will go anywhere, even if she starts taking responsibility.

As a matter of fact I did just return from seeing The Break Up. Several ‘Vaughnisms’ later I am happy to report it was a very entertaining film. My husband is on a deep sea fishing trip and I saw it with one of our friends–and he clearly enjoyed the film, too. It’s not a chick flick for even so much as a second and Vince’s character is a guy’s guy. There is also plenty of chemistry between Vince and Jen–just not the gratuitous,stereotypical kind we’ve come to half-expect in movies. More like the kind we all have or hope to experience, and not the over-the-top lusty come-on crap that so many films rely on today.I’m not trying to pick a fight–just saying there are plenty of women, myself included, who would pick VV over Brad without thinking twice about it. As Vince has said in interviews, he’s "private about his stuff" and his character really comes across that way. I think VV helped write the love scenes in TBU in such a way they didn’t need to be rolling around together on screen just to prove to some peeping toms that they are a hot couple. You could feel their connection without it. If you don’t want to see it–don’t. But it’s stupid to bash a film that you haven’t even seen just because some catty crtic may have said something that you quote, hoping to sound slick. I’m pretty picky about what I spend my entertainment $ on–and I have no regrets at all about spending $10 on The Break Up. p.s. Rock on Crim!!
