Cleveland Heights grad is Newsweek cover subjectThursday, June 29, 2006Sarah Crump Plain Dealer ReporterRuth DeGolia had a pitch ready to let Brad Pitt know all about a fair trade organization she began that helps Latin American women sell their handicrafts in the United States.But the actor/ humanitarian already knew all about the organization when he met DeGolia, a 2000 Cleveland Heights High School graduate, at a photo shoot that put them both on this week’s cover of Newsweek magazine.Pitt and DeGolia are two of the magazine’s "15 People Who Make America Great." While at the shoot, DeGolia gave Pitt a necklace and bracelet for Angelina Jolie and handmade booties for their new baby, Shiloh.All were made by women artisans for Mercado Global, which aims to lift the workers from poverty with a living wage. The organization was founded two years ago by DeGolia, 24, and former Yale University classmate Benita Singh, 23.Wednesday, DeGolia was in Zaput, Guatemala, a remote mountain village of 900, where she had escorted professional American jewelers to train Zaput residents who have formed their own jewelry company aided by Mercado Global. The Americans traveled by what DeGolia called a "chicken bus," one of the retired school buses that often carry both humans and their livestock. Then they transferred to a pickup truck that carried them over dirt roads to Zaput to teach the women how to solder silver clasps for beaded necklaces.It’s all in a day’s work of helping about 200 artisans, mostly women, in Guatemala, Argentina and, recently, southern Mexico and India, said DeGolia, who credits her upbringing with turning her into a social entrepreneur."It sounds a little sappy, but I do feel passionately that Cleveland Heights is a very unique and special place," she said. "I learned to study, work and play with all types of people from all walks of life."She said those childhood experiences helped her establish an organization that has aided artists like those in Zaput to earn four or five times the $20 a week they made from selling their jewelry to tourists. The money goes to feed and educate the women’s children in a country where an elementary-school education costs $60 a year.Mercado Global helps not only individuals, but also entire Third World communities. The organization wants to help build a health clinic in Zaput."I always knew Ruth’s name would be up in lights," said best friend Kelly Houser, a Boston teacher who has known DeGolia since third grade at Boulevard Elementary School. The two were exchange students in Spain in the sixth grade, and won a $5,000 National History Day prize in high school for a project on the spread of liberation theology in El Salvador.DeGolia, then an occasional writer for the Plain Dealer’s teen pages, reported on a variety of social issues in Latin America. She used her share of the history prize money to visit El Salvador. She also interned in the office of former Cleveland Mayor Jane Campbell, then a Cuyahoga County commissioner."She was a roll-up-your-sleeves type as a young high-school kid," Campbell said. "This young woman has brains, drive and the best values anyone could imagine."She’s also a heck of a marketer. Pitt’s office called this week for more information about Mercado Global, said DeGolia. "Wouldn’t it be great if Angelina wore our jewelry?"And that gift for Shiloh? "He thought the booties were cute."

I love that old world artisnal work and I feel like I’m making a difference in these artists lives. They have such passion for their work and I adore old world craftmanship.
