And I suspect that’s true of just about any major corporation.I tend to agree. You have a point there with major corporations, depending on location (urban or rural,) and population base of existing workers. btw: I do work in the academic field, and that is true for this profession. What concerns me is the focus people give to how a person speaks, rather than the content of their message. Perhaps I’m insulated to a degree based on my own job position, but I imagine the real world for my children and my students who must overcome preconcieved notions. I suppose, unless it’s a seriously needed job, it would be better to turn down employment with someone who had problems accepting linguistic diversity. They’d make for a tyrant of a boss in the area I live in. I wonder if this falls under the same umbrella as nondiscrimination in the EEOC federal guidelines.. hmm.

I really think the verbal skills are a lot different in a scientific environment don’t have as heavy of an emphasis placed on it. If it did, then there wouldn’t be much science getting done. I’m not sure what your field is, but I do know that other areas of campus place a higher value on the verbal English skills than the science areas. I can see how that could be frustrating and a concern for you. What I have noticed though is that the school seems to be getting more foreign profs in areas outside of science, particularly the business school.

Ok I can’t sleep-Passing through-I worked at a research center that was part of a medical school-We had many professors from China, Japan, England-I did technical work for all of them and also edited their papers-This is what is disturbing to me-The chairman of the department always went to China to speak with professors of other universities-He secured grants and fellowships for many chinese students-Never hardly a man and wife-just the wife or unmarried female students-I worked closely with a chinese student whose parents were prominent in our field of research-she told me many horror stories of how these ppl would be brought here and used for his sexual pleasure-Many were too scared to talk and he always fulfilled their promises of assisting them with obtaining visas so they can stay here-helping them purchase homes-making sure they were able to drive reliable cars. . .At the same time he was having an affair with a member of the office staff-she later sued him for sex harr. and won-My point is we would be surprised(some of us)at the level of discrimination and sexual harrassment going on at the University level-I was also disgusted by the amount of money I had to spend for supplies-we were awarded millions to research certain aspects of one part of the brain-I cannot tell you how many boxes of paper, gloves, chemicals, and cleaning supplies I bought. July was the end of our fiscal year and in order to get more money we had to spend all that we had-It was pathetic-That’s why I shy away from donating to big organizations-I always donate on a small scale like to a woman’s shelter, a pregnancy crisis center, job training center or high schools-by giving small scholarships-
