"I said to my friends in Toronto that if I ever do anything else again in the city around this time I want to do it for charity." A year later, at the first ever One X One event, Adler had lined up Kate Hudson as host, welcomed A-List celebrities like Bono and Claire Danes, while managing to raise $1.3 million for charity. The event focused on generating funding for a fusion of national and international causes, a decision Adler traces back to 9/11. "I was at the hospital and they were giving me really bad news about my husband (who was sick and later passed away)… I then called my sister to tell her the bad news and she was telling me what was going on in New York. Then I got home that night around 1 a.m. and there was a picture of a dying child in Africa on TV." The global aspect of suffering that touched Adler so deeply that day prompted last year’s theme of "Every life is precious." "The essence of the mission of One X One is that everybody can make a difference," says the event’s executive-producer Barry Avrich. "This year," says Adler, "the main focus of One X One is children in Canada and across the world." With Matt Damon slated to host, the event is quickly building up to be the highlight of the film festival that it coincides with."I’m looking forward to attending this year’s One X One event to share my personal experiences from a recent trip I took to Africa and to learn more about how we can all make a difference in the fight against poverty in one of the world’s most beautiful lands," says Damon. Damon — who visited Africa in May as a spokesman for DATA (Debt AIDS Trade Africa) and ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History — is using his celebrity to highlight the lack of clean water in Africa. "The water crisis in Africa has reached epic proportions, with over 300 million people without access to clean water and living on less than one dollar a day. We can help solve this problem but we need to act now." Damon may also get a boost from fellow spokesman Brad Pitt who is expected in Toronto for the premiere of his film Babel. War Child Canada President Dr. Eric Hoskins expressed his excitement to CTV.ca about the charities involved in the Sept. 10th event at The Carlu. They include his own along with Right To Play, Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada, Child Find and The African Children’s Choir. "By choosing those charities we’re trying to make a statement that children are children everywhere — it doesn’t matter whether their here in our country or somewhere overseas … they’re all in need of love, support and stability," says Hoskins. Hoskins, who has traveled extensively throughout the world to help children affected by war, says he doesn’t have a problem with celebrity-driven charity events. "They bring with them the television cameras, the journalists… a fan base who will listen to them, so they have a great capacity to reach out and to be heard and listened to," he says. "Once they’ve heard the message then the musicians turn them over to us and we try to provide the follow-up and give them information and opportunities to act on their interests." With R&B singer John Legend and War Child’s musical ambassadors Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk set to perform, the global message of responsibility is sure to penetrate the mainstream. While recognizing AIDS as a tremendous problem, Adler says attention has to also be paid to issues like malaria, child blindness and clean water. That’s why the conference will hear from Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the UN Millennium Project, who is working to reduce extreme poverty, disease and hunger by 2015. Sachs will speak alongside Olympian and Right to Play spokesperson Clara Hughes and Rwanda genocide survivor Immaculée Ilibagiza. The issues are things that "are so easy to eliminate," Adler says. "This is the frustration that everyone has when you think of the little things that we can do to improve that continent and it wouldn’t even take too much money."
