Amanda Bynes & Zac Efron on the set of 'Hairspray'

Production for the movie version of Hairspray, which opens in 2007, is already well under way in Toronto, Canada. Above is our very first look at Amanda Bynes (Penny Pingleton) and Zac Efron (Link Larkin) on the set of Hairspray pretty much looking the part of 1960’s Baltimore. Nice lolly, Amanda! Nice white kicks, Zac!

Allison Janney (The West Wing) was recently announced as joining the cast of Hairspray. She will play Prudy Pingleton, the overbearing mother of Penny (Amanda)

Amanda, Zac, and Allison join the ridiculously all-star cast of John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer, and newcomer Nikki Blonsky. More pictures in the gallery including James Marsden (Corny Collins) and Elijah Kelley (Seaweed J. Stubbs)!

Um, there is already a Hairspray movie, and it’s not that old, and it’s good. What is the point of a remake?

This is the broadway hit musical film version. The musical has been on stage and a big hit. This is the film version of that. Not really a remake.

Good point…it is a movie version of musical and not a remake…which begs the question: Can this cast sing? Queen Latifah, John Travolta, and Zac Efron have musical experience. But do James Marsden, Amanda Bynes, and Michelle Pfieffer?

I know Jeames Marsden can and Michelle Pheiffer was in Grease 2 and did the voice and singing voice on a main character in The Prince of Egypt but I’m not sure about Amanda

Don’t forget about Michelle in The Fabulous Baker Boys. She sang up a storm in that.As the mother of two tweens I can tell you I’ve seen Amanda sing many times on her Nickelodeon show "The Amanda Show". She can definitely sing. Seeing her in that one costume reminds me of her show and how funny she is!

There is a movie already with Ricki Lake and Dom Deloise. It was late 80’s early 90’s! Not just a musical! Just as Funny. It actually has more story about traci turnblatt. She does commercial as a spokesperson on the corny collins show.

Hey so Hairspray was the best movie ever… the singing, acting and cast were the best… yeah everyone knows that Zac Efron is hot(which he is) but what about James Marsden and Elijah Kelley… they are very attractive men too… but really the movie was excellent…
