Los Angeles man was arrested on Thursday on charges of impersonating a federal agent in what prosecutors say was a bid to get a job providing security for film stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Nelson Mercado, who has worked as a bodyguard and security consultant for Hollywood stars and leading athletes, was taken into custody one day after he was indicted by a federal grand jury, prosecutors say.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Brett Sagel told Reuters it was not yet clear why Mercado, 46, sought to work for Pitt and Jolie, though such a contract could prove lucrative. He declined to name the stars who had hired Mercado in the past.

“Impersonation of a federal agent is serious, no matter what it’s for,” Sagel said. “In this case you don’t know what his motive or rationale was, but obviously it could have serious repercussions.”

Sagel said Mercado approached Sunset Protective Services and Investigations, which provides security services for Pitt and Jolie, seeking the Hollywood super couple’s contract and falsely claiming to work for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Mercado carried phony Homeland Security Department credentials and drove a Ford Crown Victoria with tinted windows and police-style lighting that was fraudulently registered to the “U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security of America,” Sagel said.

Representatives for Pitt, 42, and Jolie, 31, were made aware of the situation, Sagel said, but it was not clear if the actors themselves were told.

Mercado was expected to make his first court appearance on Friday and could face up to three years in prison if convicted.

“Ocean’s Eleven” star Pitt and Academy Award winner Jolie have been at the center of a tabloid frenzy since they met on the set of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” in 2004.

In June, a celebrity photographer was arrested on suspicion of trespassing while trying to photograph the celebrity couple’s adopted son outside the Malibu school that he attends. Prosecutors declined to file charges in that case.

One month earlier, Jolie gave birth to their daughter, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, in the African nation of Namibia.

The lineup for the 50th London Film Festival was announced today, and it includes the UK premiere of Babel:

This year’s festival begins on Wednesday, 18 October with the European premiere of Kevin Macdonald’s The Last King of Scotland, starring Forest Whitaker and Gillian Anderson. The festival concludes on Thursday, 2 November with the UK premiere of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Babel, starring Cate Blanchett, Brad Pitt and Mexican heart-throb Gael Garcia Bernal.

no doubt she’s awesome! but it’s so interesting to see how they lived with their previous partners and how they live together now. how many humanitarian trips did bbt go on with angie? how many did x go on with brad? what’s so fascinating is that brad & angie compliment each other so well, and that’s unexpected. they bring out the best and most interesting aspects of the other.

CHM - You’re welcome. Wasn’t that a great article? I was ROTFL as I was reading about his pursuit of Steffi Graf. Shortly before their first child was born there was an article on Agassi in the Washington Post and the guy asked him how they got together and Agassi said, “I stalked her.” I thought he was joking…he wasn’t joking! Basically he’s had a crush on her since the early 1990s and although it’s vague in the article I really don’t think she knew in 1992 that he was asking for a date. The way the story reads her agent told her he wanted to talk to her about religion. That’s okay, though, because they definitely wouldn’t have lasted if they’d gotten together then. He was waaaayyyyy too shallow at that point in his life. It was also rather ironic that Brooke Shields had taped a photo of Graf to their fridge because she admired Steffi’s legs! I wonder if she read the SI article or if someone told her about it? Surely she noticed the picture was gone after he left?

The stuff about his father is heartbreaking, though. Isn’t it amazing the number of parents who do psychological damage to their children by pushing them into something they don’t want to do? That’s why I admire Earl Woods. Tiger WANTED to play golf and be the best and he knew that, so he used golf as a reward for doing well in school or cleaning his room or whatever. It wasn’t a weapon used against him the way it was for Agassi and so many other child prodigies - whether it’s sports or music or tiddly winks.
