Great , a wonderful pasttime with ur garden.
I don’t have a green thumb so I leave that to my husband. He tends to small one now because of the past hurricanes we had here in Fla. and the constant threat of heavy storms every pm.
Will probably spend my weekend watching the golf and do speed reading?.Got so many reading mat. from my library. Back issues as far back as 8/28- Time, Newsweek etc. Oh, I got one Nat. Enq., who would think the pub. lib. will have it. ha..

303 | trini gurl - We regulars haven’t gone, we’re still here. Having 4 threads in 2 days has spread us out a bit that’s all. It is true some of the “regulars” have just had it with the haters. The unbelievably nasty comments to two of them in particular, while showing the ugly deths of the writer’s soul, made it so some just don’t want to suddenly come across such ugliness again. When the haters leave - and they always do - they will come out of lurk and post.

One more week until October - Angie and Brad must be packing up a storm - can you IMAGINE traveling for a month to India with a child, a toddler and a baby? I hope they bring enough help with them. I guess Brad will be on Dad duty and loving it too!

I am not sure that I have ever risen to the defense of Brad Pitt and
Angelina Jolie before. They certainly haven’t risen to my defense, because
I would have remembered that. There’s no journalistic upside to defending
overdogs; at best, people think you’re a suck-up; at worst, they think
you’re a rabid running dog of the decadent celebrity culture.
But that’s what I’m doing. Background: Brad Pitt, a movie actor, and
Angelina Jolie, a movie actress (many of my readers are reclusive
intellectuals and do not follow celebrity gossip or, indeed, any news at
all from the 21st century) (which, when you think about it, is not that
bad an idea) have been “going together,” as the kids say, for a few years
now. In that time, Pitt has joined Jolie in her humanitarian efforts.
“Angelina Jolie’s humanitarian efforts” is a phrase that makes a lot of
people smile. Some kind of publicity stunt, perhaps? Some deluded
do-gooder work by a washed-up actress? Well, no. She’s been working with
the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for half a
decade now. She has adopted two children, one from Cambodia and one from
Ethiopia.
She has visited refugee camps in Cambodia, Pakistan, Kenya, Namibia,
Tanzania, Russia, Egypt, Haiti and Darfur. Current score: number of times
President Bush has visited refugee camps in any of those countries: zero;
number of times Angelina Jolie has those places: dozens. She has visited
Darfur more times than any high-level member of the administration. And
visiting Darfur is no picnic even if you are rich, famous and beautiful.
(The idea that being rich, famous and beautiful inoculates against all
doubt and all pain is stupid, a weird byproduct of celebrity worship.
Celebrities are just human beings. They have physical comfort and
gratifying acclaim — although the acclaim is untrustworthy — but in
their hearts, they are just as fearful and restless and confused as the
rest of us. And there’s no rule book for celebrity, so they’re doubly
confused and triply weirded out. But yes, their sheets have a high thread
count.)
Angelina Jolie is doing fame jujitsu. She is taking the strength of your
admiration for her beauty and her charm, and throwing you over her
shoulder and into a fly-infested hellhole in Sudan and saying, “Pay
attention.” This is not a bad thing. It’s culture-jamming, only done by
someone at the top rather than someone at the bottom.
So she got together with extremely handsome movie star Brad Pitt and said,
“Love me, love my refugee camps,” and he did! So now they’re doing it
together. More fame jujitsu: When they had a baby together this summer,
Jolie capitalized on the (utterly bewildering) interest in celebrity baby
photos by selling the photos to Getty Images and donating the proceeds to
UNICEF.
This is a good thing.
I was reading in this newspaper the other week an article by Cintra
Wilson. The essential point she was making is pretty good: The Bush
administration is so obsessed with power and money and God, that
unqualified celebrities have to take the lead in working for the underdog.
But this point is entirely undercut by the knee-jerk smarm of the writing.
Is Brad Pitt really a “toxic bachelor”? And what does that mean? Is Spike
Lee really the “soft-core bard of African America,” and what does that
mean? (The man who made “Do The Right Thing” is soft core? Render unto me
a break.) She means to be praising Lee in that sentence, but it sure
doesn’t come out that way.
She writes: “Like celebrities don’t have enough to do, with all their
tragic marriages, drug-addled children and surgical neck- lifts.”
You don’t have to be a celebrity to have a tragic marriage or a
drug-addled child. It is not remotely fair to assume that people who act
in movies are less sad about loss and suffering than clerks, truck drivers
or journalists. It is not even really fair to blame movie actors for the
strange code-red level of projection and envy that surrounds them.
Envy is the flip side of celebrity journalism. It’s probably easy to hate
celebrities if you stand in the cold all night trying to take a photograph
of them, but why should the rest of us care? Aren’t those all the cheapest
of cheap shots, and don’t we all have something better to do? Maybe we
could scrape up some money and fly to Darfur. I hear this is the
off-season.

Going by your name I will assume that you are from Trinidad. I am Trinidadian too, born in port of spain. Grew up in Maraval, and San Juan.

Though this is not a Jennifer thread, it seems a good place to
make the comment as I know some Jenfans are coming on this
thread to make their comments. (I made any comments on
the Jennifer threads for weeks now ).

So here are my 2 cents worth. I really think that Jennifer’s VF
interview and the way she handled the divorce has and will
continue to do her a big disservice to her life in at least 2 ways.

Picture this. If you were someone from the industry, would you
date Jennifer after the way she used her friends and the
interviewer to slag off Brad in the VF Interview while trying to
come out smelling sweet. I’m sure the people within the media
industry are well aware of what Jennifer was trying to do. Well let
me ask you this question – if you were a man, without a movie to
promote, would you be a little hesitant to date some one like
Jennifer after what she has done?? What if your relationship with
Jennifer were to fall apart, how will she then take you apart?? I
don’t know about you, but at work, I’m wary about people who
gossip and bad mouth co-workers to other colleagues who are not
her friends. Well, if you were an actor, a
reasonably well known actor, wouldn’t you be just a little wary
about dating Jennifer?? She could of course date a no name guys
- an agent or something but I don’t think she’d rather.

part 3 - I think Passing Through or some one may have covered
this point I’m making here but anyway, I’ll try and make the same
point again.

We don’t know Brad, Angelina and Jennifer. But people within
the industry probably have a better idea of these 3 people,
whether they are nice, whether they are decent people. So far,
Brad and Angelina have continued to be offered roles and offers
appear to have dried up for Jennifer. I actually expected Jennifer
to be offered more roles and endorsements as she is popular in
America. TBU did well though I know some of you think its
because of VV, I do think people also went to see TBU because of
Jennifer.

I could be wrong but I wonder if the apparent lack of offers is
because certain key decision makers don’t like her. These key
people have to make a judgment whether to offer to use Jennifer
or not. When they have to exercise that judgment, I wonder if
they don’t just think, “Jennifer?? - no, not really,, just don’t feel
comfortable, won’t stick my neck out for her, don’t really like her.
Lets try - Kate Hudson, or someone else instead.” Lets face it,
people don’t like back stabbers in any industry, just too
threatening. If you had a choice, would you work with a back
stabber??

Wow, lylian – that was a great post. I agree that the world is small and she is all but gone in the industry. The only reason she is behind the camera is because she thinks that the thing to do and not because she has a desire to. She is shallow and one dimensional. There is nothing wrong with that but don’t fault others who want more in life than that.

Why is Brad a puppet since he has a purpose in life other than being eye candy on the red carpet for some wanna-be movie actress? Jen could have had all this and more but SHE became complacent. Yeah you can blame Angelina for being so god-damn gorgeous, but in all honesty, if he was my husband, I would have been on the set every day and made Ms. Jolie my bestest best friend.
If Brad is the puppet they desperately want him to be, how long before AJ gets rid of him? Take it from another strong woman – he would have been gone a long time ago. It doesn’t take long to smell out weak minded meat. She would have seen those cracks in the armor before getting pregnant and definitely after traveling all over the world with him and yet we see pictures of the both them looking like true bliss.

Lylian as usual you are kind with your posts, and well-thought out.
I hope that Jen’s fans stop being so emotional and throw some
real support behind her because she could use it.
I’m sure that no one wants to work with her even if she could
bring in the money. Remember well-known box office stars Val
Kilmer and Sean Young from the 80’s? People who are difficult
make it hard for directors and costars to want to work with them.
Between two people who are of equal value to the fil m in terms of
appeal and fitting the role and being able to handle the material
(another place she falls down), they will choose who is nicer and
more stimulating to work with. Someone who brings something to
the table — a friendly attitude, a good work ethic, and an iterest in
the project. After what she herself said about her costars,
directors, and the projects themselves she blamed for her sorry
performances in the last two years, who would want her on the
team?
