Jolie/Pitt Foundation Formed

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have formed the Jolie/Pitt Foundation to aid humanitarian causes around the world. The newly formed charitable foundation is giving away $1 million to the Global Action for Children and $1 million to Doctors Without Borders, to help families affected by HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty.

The U.S. director for Global Action for Children, Jennifer Delaney, said: “Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt not only care, but more important, are taking concrete action to address the fact that there will be 20 million children orphaned by AIDS by 2010, and millions more orphaned by tuberculosis, malaria and conflict or whose parents are sick and dying.”

The couple’s spokesman, Trevor Neilson, released a statement saying: “Angelina and Brad are committed to using their resources to help the world’s most vulnerable people. These two organizations are focusing on crises that receive far too little attention and Angelina and Brad are happy to do their part to help.”

And here’s a list of Brad and Angelina’s Banksy art purchases:

  • $226,000: The “Picnic” painting depicts a white family of four merrily lunching under an umbrella on a red checked blanket while 15 starving Africans - including several children with distended bellies - look on.
  • $75,000: A white bust with a bleeding bullet hole in the forehead - was a particular favorite of Jolie’s. “She went nuts for that one,” an onlooker told the mag. “She told [her baby daddy], ‘I must have that one.’”
  • $75,000: Portrait of a man hit in the head with a custard pie.

UPDATE :: Added pictures in the galllery of the aforementioned Banksy art that Brad and Angelina purchased. Thanks, Susanne!

With reference to helping “poor black ppl in LA” Wow are there no poor bl;ack asians or white ppl or hispanics in LA??? Let me give you a little secret-THERE ARE NO POOR PPL IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!! I don not know what your definition of poor is, but let me give you my story: My mother and her family (back in the mid-late fifties) were considered poor. Her dad was so lazy that he went to the meat market and gathered scraps form the garbage to bring them home to his family. Of course the meat was always infested with maggots. Mom was the oldest so she had to get some vinegar and baking soda and effervesce the maggots out. Still grandmother says when she put the meat in the skillet maggots would pop out. There were nine children. Grandmother was raised by “lazy parents” so she had to do all of the work when she was growing up. She married my grandad at age 19 (he was like 45 or something). Oh yeah they lived in a 2 bedroom shack. The last kid was born in 1960. Not having and being ridiculed made them all work their asses off. If I had to choose one thing that I learned from my mom, it would be to get educated, work for what you want, and make NO EXCUSES for what you don’t have! At age 14 my sister was sewing (with no lessons) like a professional. She made all of my clothes. Our house was so clean you could eat off the floor. Our yard was well manicured and we worked so damn hard, there wasn’t time for standing on the corner, wathching hours of TV and hanging out. We listened to the radio and read books and newspapers. If there was a Jolie-Pitt foundation that gave to poor black ppl we would have been in the “other line” you know the one where the ppl were too proud to take handouts. I am still too effing proud to take anything from anyone and so are my kids. I would rather grow food (and we did when I was a kid) in my back yard, wash my clothes in a boiling hot pot outside and hang them on a clothesline, chop down my trees and sell the firewood for money, and clean houses than to take money just for being categorized as a poor black person. Poverty is a state of mind. The word was never in our vocabulary. And last, don’t tell me there aren’t enough jobs because there are-Ppl are just picky as to what they want to do so those who really want freedom and who are self-reliant come here and gladly work those jobs-I say good for them since no one else will!

121 | Maria - I have a lot of Republican friends too that think Bush is an idiot. I also live in a much more “red state” than NY too, so I suppose thats bound to happen, but even here, I ask them…doesn’t your party have anyone better than that? I mean, take John McCain for example - most of the time I don’t agree with him. But at least the man has some integrity and not a “me me me king/god complex” and can string a coherent sentence together. Some people vote for a guy because he’s “just like them,” but I want my President to be smarter than me. Or at least AS smart.

Back to Angie, can I ask where the report of her signing on to be in Atlas Shrugged came out of? Because if its out of Variety or the Hollywood Reporter, then I’m sure its true, but I just wanted to make sure. Again, I love that she’s taking on more serious, dramatic roles. I said a long time ago that she should. :)

People PLEASE ignore Sara.Good Morning all!

Good Moring right back. How you doing this morning?

Jen does give lots of money to charity. She just doesn’t flaunt it like other people.

Geez, I can’t believe all the haters and complainers on this site this morning. Both BP and AJ work very hard at their jobs (acting) and contribute more than most people do in a lifetime to their charitable efforts in terms of time and energy. And they give a significant portion of their income. Both of them in interviews where the words have come out of their mouths have said how very fortunate they are to do something they love, get paid big bucks for it…. And unlike so many stars they give back. The foundation is just starting up and will continue to give more to their causes. This doesn’t mean that they don’t personally give from their earnings. How many of you haters have given a third of your income or even 10 percent to something that helps society, the environment or conservation? How many of you have adopted a child of any color that was unwanted? How many of you have done your research and really taken a good look at the works that AJ/BP do? Have you read her book Notes from My Travels? Did you read about what Brad was doing in NOLA? If you want to complain then complain about Paris taking a photo op when she gave a homeless person $100 on the way thru a fast food drive thru. That is tacky. Or Lindsay Lohan crying and moaning over the million worth of jewels that she had stolen from her because she didn’t watch her bag. People give in different ways, but the important thing is that AJ/BP are doing something–in fact more than their share. As others have noted–Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor, Bono etc., have all given millions to their causes and they don’t live like “normal people” either–they have their multi-million dollar houses, their security detail, their artwork, their cars etc. And you know, AJ and BP are some of the few stars that drive the same vehicles, where the same clothes and shoes to outings. AJ has had that black trench coat for what seems like forever. Do you think JA and the majority of other stars are seen over and over in the same outfit. I don’t think so.
Instead of criticitzing , why don’t you get off your lazy butts and do something for a cause you believe in!

Then how do we know they are doing it then. You are a loser Chin, and you will always be. Thank God for people like Brad and Angie. They make they ugly of you, a little more barable in the world.

#128: FITR: I like John McCain, but he upsets me sometimes because he’s changing back and forth all the time. I do think he’s a good man, though. Oh, I want my President to be 100% smarter than me — that’s for sure. If you tape a Bush conference once, you’ll not need to hear any going further because it’s the SAME thing said in previous ones.

I don’t know wheret the Angie Alas bit came from — HEY OUT THERE — DOES ANYONE HAVE AN ANSWER FOR FITR?

#129 Maria,I’m doing well, but I have been very busy since my 2 older kids have started school this Fall.

WARNING: this is a series of posts about what a Charitable
Foundation must do in order to qualify for tax exemptions under
the US federal tax laws.
http://apps.irs.gov/charities/charitable/article/
0,,id=96099,00.html

Exemption Requirements

To be tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal
Revenue Code, an organization must BE ORGANIZED AND
OPERATED EXCLUSIVELY FOR PURPOSES SET FORTH IN
SECTION 501(C)(3), AND NONE OF ITS EARNINGS MAY INURE
TO ANY PRIVATE SHAREHOLDER OR INDIVIDUAL. In addition, it
may not attempt to influence legislation as a substantial part of its
activities and it may not participate in any campaign activity for or
against political candidates.
Organizations described in section 501(c)(3) are commonly
referred to as charitable organizations. Organizations described in
section 501(c)(3), other than testing for public safety
organizations, are eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions
in accordance with Code section 170.
The exempt purposes set forth in section 501(c)(3) are
charitable, religious, educational, scientific, literary, testing for
public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports
competition, and the preventing cruelty to children or animals.
The term charitable is used in its generally accepted legal sense
and includes relief of the poor, the distressed, or the
underprivileged; advancement of religion; advancement of
education or science; erecting or maintaining public buildings,
monuments, or works; lessening the burdens of government;
lessening neighborhood tensions; eliminating prejudice and
discrimination; defending human and civil rights secured by law;
and combating community deterioration and juvenile delinquency.

How could you “cut them down’? First, they’re not trees ( I hope you know that) and second, they don’t even who you are. You are one of billions of internet users. Last but not least, you say they make you sick…well you know what else makes people sick and kills them, arsenic. And do you know what I do to not get sick and possibly, I AVOID it. I don’t ingest it and then complain about feeling sick. If that’s too extreme, I’ll give you another example. I can’t stand Paris Hilton but I don’t go onto her fan websites or message boards just to “cut her down every chance I get.” I’m not going to change the minds of her fans and vice-versa. There is something that we as humans all have, freedom of choice.

You plan to come here every chance you get? And how is that helping you in anyway? Really, how is it improving your life? If it brings you joy…then I feel for sorry for you since you obviously can’t find happiness in your own life whether it be from your friends or family. Better yet, does your strong hatred towards Brad and Angie make this world a better place? Seriously, does a child NOT go to bed hungry because of your presence on here? Or is a homeless person in New Orleans rebuilding his or her life because you’re on here exposing Brad and Angelina’s “alleged” lies? Is an orphan placed into a loving home every time you try to convince fans on here that Brad and Angelina are supposedly fake?

Continuing on from earlier post,

To be organized exclusively for a charitable purpose, the
organization must be a corporation, community chest, fund, or
foundation. A CHARITABLE TRUST IS A FUND OR FOUNDATION
AND WILL QUALIFY. However, an individual will not qualify. The
articles of organization must limit the organization’s purposes to
exempt purposes set forth in section 501(c)(3) and must not
expressly empower it to engage, other than as an insubstantial
part of its activities, in activities that are not in furtherance of one
or more of those purposes. This requirement may be met if the
purposes stated in the articles of organization are limited in some
way by reference to section 501(c)(3). IN ADDITION, AN
ORGANIZATION’S ASSETS MUST BE PERMANENTLY DEDICATED
TO AN EXEMPT PURPOSE. This means that if an organization
dissolves, its assets must be distributed for an exempt purpose,
to the federal government, or to a state or local government for a
public purpose. To establish that an organization’s assets will be
permanently dedicated to an exempt purpose, its articles of
organization should contain a provision insuring their distribution
for an exempt purpose in the event of dissolution. Although
reliance may be placed upon state law to establish permanent
dedication of assets for exempt purposes, an organization’s
application can be processed by the IRS more rapidly if its articles
of organization include a provision insuring permanent dedication
of assets for exempt purposes. For examples of provisions that
meet these requirements, see Publication 557, Tax-Exempt
Status for Your Organization.
An organization will be regarded as operated exclusively for one or
more exempt purposes only if it engages primarily in activities
that accomplish exempt purposes specified in section 501(c)(3).
An organization will not be so regarded if more than an
insubstantial part of its activities does not further an exempt
purpose. For more information concerning types of charitable
organizations and their activities, see Publication 557 http://
apps.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p557.pdf (warning, this is a 60 page
document).

And more from the same web page:

THE ORGANIZATION MUST NOT BE ORGANIZED OR OPERATED
FOR THE BENEFIT OF PRIVATE INTERESTS, SUCH AS THE
CREATOR OR THE CREATOR’S FAMILY, SHAREHOLDERS OF THE
ORGANIZATION, OTHER DESIGNATED INDIVIDUALS, OR
PERSONS CONTROLLED DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY BY SUCH
PRIVATE INTERESTS. NO PART OF A SECTION 501(C)(3)
ORGANIZATION’S NET EARNINGS MAY INURE TO THE BENEFIT
OF ANY PRIVATE SHAREHOLDER OR INDIVIDUAL. A private
shareholder or individual is a person having a personal and private
interest in the activities of the organization. If the organization
engages in an excess benefit transaction with a person having
substantial influence over the organization, an excise tax may be
imposed on the person and any organization managers agreeing
to the transaction.
Section 501(c)(3) organizations are restricted in how much
political and legislative (lobbying) activities they may conduct. For
a detailed discussion, see Political and Lobbying Activities. For
more information about lobbying activities by charities, see the
article Lobbying Issues; for more information about political
activities of charities, see the FY-2002 CPE topic Election Year
Issues.

And another little bit more:

http://www.answers.com/topic/foundation-charity
The 1969 law clearly defined the fundamental social contract
offered to private charitable foundations, the core of which has
been imitated in law by other nations. In exchange for exemption
from paying most taxes and for limited tax benefits being offered
to donors, a charitable foundation must (a) pay out at least 5% of
the value of its endowment each year, none of which may be to
the private benefit of any individual; (b) not own or operate
significant for-profit businesses; (c) file detailed public annual
reports and conduct annual audits in the same manner as a for-
profit corporation; (d) meet a suite of additional accounting
requirements unique to nonprofits.

Regarding publicity, if publicity can generate public awareness, why not????
We need publicity to get a message across.
I am all for it. This is publicity which is put to good use.
Think, publicity as a tool. I look at it like a marketing tool.
If Jolie/Pitt have the ability to attract attention, not using it would be a waste.
If you dont like a person, you can take anything and spin it negatively.
Jolie and Pitt are here to stay.
Regardless what haters said about them, we dont care cos we know the truth and we are all armed with good info and knowledge.
I see very good camarderie spirit and very united group of people here.
I am happy for the Pitts.

COLD HARD MATH @ 09/21/2006 at 11:26 am

It is really sad that these two, get criticized so much, for DONATING money to charity:

How come, they only donated this much?

How come this?How come that?
Why not this? Why not that?
Why aren’t they donating, to this cause or that cause?

It’s really sad. All they want to do, is just to help people……

BTW-Were were you when your beloved idol was asked in an interview “what do you thing about charity?” and she bragginly said “Well It’s not my thing”??

There’s one word thar fits you well.DELUSIONAL!

#132 Amy
Really? Name one? It’s an honest question. A lot people like you have come here and said that she has but they haven’t been able to name one…that actually exists. Dont’ try to cop out by saying that she keeps it private, it can’t be since you claim to know that she donates to charity?

If her fans were to able to find out that she has done ads for L’Oreal and the very classy company known as Heineken brewery, then you should have no trouble finding out about JA’s charitable efforts.
