LOS ANGELES—“Don’t mess around with me, man,” Brad Pitt quipped, his famous blue eyes smiling when a journalist remarked that only two years ago, he said he was ready to be a father.

Now, he has not one but three children.

In an unprecedented freewheeling interview at the Universal Hilton, his first with our press group since he began his much-publicized relationship with Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt talked about Angie, fatherhood, the issues he believes in and Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Babel,” his stunning new film.
In gray shirt and jeans, Brad, 43, is younger looking and a lot more boyish in person.

When he was asked to stand by to pose for pictures, he asked, “What am I supposed to do for five minutes?” And then he broke into a brief dance which would have elicited shrieks from his millions of fans had they been there.

Talking for the first time on a variety of subjects, he smiled and leaned forward when the topics were obviously close to his heart and mind, like flying planes and putting his celebrity status to positive use like in environmental activism.
He shook his head emphatically when he named two things that irritate him the most. Sometimes he rocked back in his chair. Reflexively, he occasionally wet his lips.
The only time he refused to answer was when he was asked what he was good at. “You stumped me there,” he told a reporter. “It’s really not for me to say.”

We got to throw the first question—about his emotionally charged scene in “Babel” where his character speaks by phone to his toddler son.
A story (written by Guillermo Arriaga based on his and Alejandro’s idea) about how one rifle shot in the desert affects four families in Morocco, Los Angeles, Mexico and Japan, “Babel” is superbly directed by Alejandro (“Amores Perros,” “21 Grams”), who won the Best Director prize at last May’s Cannes Film festival for this film.

Alejandro’s achievement is doing justice to the milieu in each of the four locations and interrelated stories, drawing fine performances from all (and we mean everybody) in the cast, from Brad (made up to look older, with graying hair), Cate Blanchett and Gael Garcia Bernal to the Japanese, Mexican and Moroccan cast.
The latter group, recruited from announcements blared from mosque speakers, acted for the very first time before cameras. A Japanese actress, Rinko Kikuchi, is terrific in a daring role (more about her in another column).

The obsession with Brangelina has overshadowed the couple’s impressive philanthropic efforts. Each of them recently made a gift of $1 million to two humanitarian organizations, Global Action for Children and Doctors Without Borders.

“I’ve seen ‘The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl’ about 18 times,” declared Brad who has patiently watched this kiddie favorite with Shiloh Nouvel, his four-month-old biological daughter with Angelina, and their adopted children, Maddox Chivan and Zahara Marley.

During the interview, Brad, who was divorced from Jennifer Aniston last year, was the first to downplay his public speaking skills.
Smiling, he quipped as he began to respond to a question, “Let me just sit here and stutter for about five minutes and I’ll come up with an answer.”

I was moved by that scene where your character is talking to his son on the phone. He is trying to sound normal but he couldn’t control his emotions. Does that scene pack more emotional wallop for you since you’re now a father?

That scene means a lot more to me now. That moment is about the idea of losing almost everything and what that would mean. Sometimes we can’t see the wonderful things in our lives, the wonderful people. When Richard, my character, hears his son’s voice as he talks about something so innocuous but so beautiful, a thunderbolt of realization hits him: I could have lost all of these. From that moment on, his life would hopefully change.

What is it like being a father now that you have three kids.

Three a year so next year I’ll have six (laughter). Nine total. We’re looking for a soccer team.

How has fatherhood changed your life?

It makes me much more efficient. I do everything faster because there’s no time for messing around. I value what I’m doing. I mean, I still value my work but at the same time, I value the part about getting home to the kids. It makes me stealthier in my attack of things. In a funny way, though, it doesn’t make work inconsequential. It makes the work mean more because I know that somewhere down the road, my kids will see my movies. I approach everything now by considering what it might or could potentially mean to them down the road.

How did you manage to co-produce two potentially award-winning films, “The Departed” and “Running With Scissors,” on top of your duties as actor, father and supporter of humanitarian causes?

I work with good people. Maybe turning 40 has something to do with it as well. There were certain things that I wanted to attack and they seemed to work. Having kids makes me more efficient, too. I’m very proud of these films. That’s a whole other aspect of the business. Actors can only work in certain roles but being a producer opens up opportunities. I get to work on films and stories that mean something to me or films that I wouldn’t normally fit in like “Running With Scissors.” It is a real joy.

What was it like working in the middle of nowhere in Morocco without the distraction of the paparazzi?

They did not have a clue we were there. We had to drive an hour to get to this village that was in the middle of like a lunar landscape. They didn’t have electricity. They brought it in for the film. They ran a (power) line and we were able to leave it there afterward which was nice.

Cate says “I peed” in one scene but it is probably one of the most touching scenes.

Yes, it was very intimate. That goes back to Alejandro and Guillermo’s writing. They threw in something as human and mundane as having to take a piss and worked it into this intimate moment. The moment spoke volumes about their history, who they once were and what they could be together. But don’t listen to me. Whatever Cate said, it’s right. Cate has an uncanny insight and I would go with her response before mine.

How does your involvement with humanitarian causes seep into your acting career?

I know it has to seep into acting in some way. Maybe not in “Ocean’s 13” (laughter) but in some way. This film relates to me on that level.

Does this movie speak closer to you?

Yes, because it parallels my belief that what is most lacking is an understanding of each other. It’s a strange thing with globalization, we’re more connected to others and yet, there are more conflicts than ever. It has something to do with a lack of understanding and of talking to each other.

On a lighter note, do you have your pilot’s license yet?

Yes, I do.

What is it about flying that you love so much?

Well, I can’t be followed, which is the first plus. Angie has been flying for a while so the second plus is the idea that it’s like throwing the kids in the back of a Suburban and having some freedom. There’s the freedom in the air and a real sense of accomplishment. Flying is this amazing marriage of human ability with nature and machine. Any one of these can go wrong at any moment so there’s a real call for focus and attention up there. I’m telling you it can go wrong seriously fast but it’s a real pleasure. To be 40 and still be able to achieve things that are personal is a rewarding experience.

What kind of planes do you fly?

We have the beginner planes. Little ones.

Was there a movie that inspired you to become an actor?

No, but strangely enough, I like “Saturday Night Fever” (laughter). I did. I loved it. But it wasn’t because of the bad suits and the dancing although I can do the hustle as I’ve proven today. I didn’t know people could live like that (until I saw that movie). I had only seen my corner of the world which was Oklahoma and Missouri. That there are other complete ways to attack life—this idea of a different culture—I got most intrigued by. I’ve always liked films. I remember watching “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” in kindergarten.

What inspired you then?

A week before I was supposed to graduate from college, everyone had applied for jobs and was receiving offers. I hadn’t applied anywhere. I didn’t have a clue nor did I have any interest to go somewhere. But it occurred to me and I’ve always thought, I wish I’d grown up in New York or LA because I could watch films in those cities. It just struck me one night that I can do it. So within that week, I decided I was going to LA. But I had no money so I worked for a couple of weeks. Then I loaded up the car and went to LA. I did not go back to my college classes. I did not graduate.

LOL! I wish I had been there damit. A couple of days ago we were talking about Brad’s shyness to dance with Angie in the Bogotá scene in MAMS. Now I really wanted to see him shaking his hips! LOL! He must be on cloud 9! Thanks to Angie !

Another great new thread, thanks Jared. It’s wonderful how happy Brad comes across in this interview, you can almost picture him smiling and laughing. He sounds almost giddy. I’ve been a fan of his for a long time and I’ve never seen or heard him sound like this, it’s as if everything he’s ever dreamed of happened to him all at once. Hope they have a wonderful stay in India and continued happiness there.

Oh heavens are we still on this miscast for the MP role? Seriously, this is just tedious. Anyone who has a problem with it….well too bad, you’re just gonna have to deal with it or start your own production company and cast Halle Berry in it.

It’s nice that Halle got that flick, but Variety ought to cut her some slack. She signed up for those movies BEFORE she won the Oscar. She may have had all those movies in the work for years and had committed to them. As we know from when Brad dropped out of “The Fountainhead” a few weeks before it was scheduled to shoot…movie studios are not amused by that. Luckily for Brad his quid pro quo was to do M&MS instead. Male actors also have a much larger selection of movie roles to choose from, but actresses, particularly ethnic actors are only offered a limited number of movies. It’s not like Halle had any cache before she won the Oscar that she could be more demanding about getting better movie roles. Then again, she’s got the same option that everyone else has - start a production company and create your own projects. Brad did it for X and X is much worse actress than Halle at her Catwoman worst.

PUNE: Hollywood’s hottest couple — Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie — finally flew into Pune in a private aircraft from Mumbai on Thursday afternoon.

Airport officials confirmed to TOI that both Pitt, Jolie, their two children, besides two other persons, including a woman, landed here on a Bombardier aircraft — belonging to the Raymonds group — at 2.40 pm.

Both Jolie and Pitt were wearing white-coloured full sleeve T-shirts and trousers and exchanged greetings with the airport staff, before boarding a white Mercedes van. Private security personnel from abroad who were already camping in the city, escorted them in the vehicle.

“Brad was holding Shiloh-Nouvel (the youngest of their three children) while Maddox, who was fast asleep, was carried to the car by one of the attendants,” said a Pune airport official who was among the few to get a close look at the star couple.

“It was raining heavily when they arrived here at Lohegaon.”

Pune airport director Deepak Shastri, J P Matur, in charge of the civil airport’s air traffic security, Dhiru Vandekar, manager of Indian Airlines and in charge of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) received the star couple after they landed.

A Mercedes and another vehicle went right up to the tarmac to receive the VIPs and then drove the star guests to an undisclosed location.

Pitt and Jolie are in the city for the shooting of the film A Mighty Heart, based on the life of assassinated American journalist Daniel Pearl.

Jolie plays the role of Mariane, his widow. American actor Dan Futtermann will be playing Daniel Pearl.

The film also features actor Irrfan Khan of Maqbool fame who plays Pakistani agent named Captain who helps Marianne trying to secure the release of her abducted husband from the terrorists.

Part of the film’s shooting will be done in Pune after Pakistani authorities denied a visa to Irrfan, where the film was previously scheduled to be shot.

Originally tipped to be reaching Pune on Sunday, there was intense speculation whether the couple will make it in Pune.

The star couple, however, managed to fox the media waiting anxiously at the airport since early Thursday morning.

Closely watched by heavily armed security personnel, the aircraft taxis to the apron area and stops besides two vehicles — a white Mercedes van and a metallic gray Toyota Innova.

There is expectation in the air that perhaps Hollywood star couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have arrived. For the next 15 minutes, as rain lashes the entire area and with visibility down to a few metres, there is absolutely no sign of the aircraft door opening. With no respite from the rain, finally the aircraft door opens and a man — their personal security guard — walks out to check out the arrangements with the Central Industrial Security Force personnel who are stationed there.

Satisfied with the arrangements, he goes back to the aircraft to bring down Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, their three children — Maddox, Zahara, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt — and a nanny. ‘‘A little after 3 pm, Angelina clad in a white shirt and dark khakis embarked from the plane followed by Brad wearing dark clothes and sunglasses and were escorted to the white Mercedes van. From the airport, the couple drove down directly to Le Meridien Hotel in the city. The vehicles drove straight down to the basement of the hotel and with the entire area cordoned off, they went straight up to the fifth floor. Soon after the star couple were dropped, the vehicles came up to the hotel entrance to offload their luggage that included bags full of children’s toys.

Once the star couple were safely ensconced inside their rooms and with 12 security personnel guarding the fifth floor, their personal bodyguard was seen walking around the hotel checking out the arrangements.

Meanwhile, the hotel saw hectic activity with the film crew coming in. The couple are in the city for shooting A Mighty Heart — based on the book by Mariane Pearl, widow of The Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl who was beheaded by terrorists in Pakistan.

Actor/comedian Vince Vaughn has apparently pulled the plug on his relationship with actress Jennifer Aniston. The split was “solidified” during a lengthy phone call from London, where Vaughn is doing work on a holiday comedy, Joe Claus.
Wow, I bet no one saw this coming! What with all the “there’s nothing to see here” and “we aren’t engaged” crap that has been coming out of Aniston’s mouth for the last year, it was a matter of time before Vince got the hint that Jennifer just wasn’t committed to the relationship, or perhaps that she’s one loopy *****.
An “inside source” told Us Weekly that Vaughn confided to him/her, “It’s not common knowledge, but we’re not together anymore. We’ve split up.”
The Good Girl also canceled a pre-arranged visit to London where she and Vaughn were to have attended a party together on September 23rd. Lucky Vince, maybe now he can have a good time a la Wedding Crashers without the old ball and chain to drag him down.
What does Team Aniston have to say about The Break-Up stars’ reported breakup? “They’re 100 percent done,” said the source.
That sounds like something Team Anniston would say. The reasons behind the split are numerous and not unpredictable, including sources citing Vince being “scared off” by how “needy she is.”
Oh, that’s the death knell right there, ladies: neediness. You don’t have to be a multi-millionaire famous actress to know that.
Plus, you’d think after getting totally dumped by your husband for Angelina “I Am a Rock I Am an Island” Jolie, with whom he immediately bred, it ought to have sent a clear “ixnay on the eedinessnay” message to Aniston. But alas, some habits die hard.
It’s also been averred that Vince’s mom was not a fan of the Friends star. Apparently, when Vaughn called his mother to announce the engagement, Mom Vaughn “freaked out.”
And by freaked out, I think they mean, she said something like, “Are you nuts? That chick is as psycho as that guy you played in, um, Psycho. Run Vince, run as fast as you can. Oh, and get back that $500K, 9.5 carat yellow diamond ring you gave her too, ‘cuz that loon might use it to scratch your eyes out.”
Paraphrasing of course.
Jennifer described Vince’s mom’s interference as “a real letdown,” and is “upset his mom got in the way.”
No mention of wishing that old meddling prune would drop dead of a heart attack, dry up and blow away.
In fact, it is reported that Aniston did return the ring he gave her when they supposedly didn’t get engaged. It must have been one of those promise rings all the kids talk about: I promise I will marry you next week if you will sleep with me today. Don’t fall for it, Wimpy.
Not surprisingly, another big factor was the old “Jen’s world” issue causing way too much scrutiny for the couple as the media blitz that plagued them wouldn’t let up and just let them be, let them alone.
So, it seems in this case, it’s Jen’s fault for the breakup. What guy’s ego — even a seemingly laid back guy like Vaughn — is going to tolerate constant public denials of a relationship? Imagine if you will you weren’t a famous guy, but just some Joe Blow and the girl you keep taking out on dates and taking home to mom constantly says, “We aren’t dating - I don’t even know who this ****** is, he just keeps showing up the same places I do.” I mean seriously.
Don’t worry Vince, you’ll bounce back. As for Jennifer, I hear there are all kinds of shallow, superficial, children-hating men in some place called Hollywood. You should check it out.

Wow. Okay, i may have to break down and buy this rag, I was gonna skip it regardless, simply because her fug face is on the cover…but I agree, it does sound too good to pass up. Thanks sad!

So I broke down and bought a copy of US weekly for the first time ever. Al I can say is the knives are out for Jennifer Anniston at US magazine.
Some excerpts:

Reading this article actually pissed me off somewhat. It means that the media have known all these years what a manipulative mean ***** Jennifer is, and they have spent almost two years protecting poor Jen and slamming and slandering Brad and Angie.

Well all those Fannistons that have been screaming Karma, how about this for Karma, that the fraud is slowing being unmasked and shown for the meanspirited, shallow, fame hungry woman that she is. Mayor Guli - here’s my position on gay marriage: Everyone should legally have the right to be in a miserable marriage. Hey…why should heterosexual people be the only people who have to pay a lawyer to undo their mistakes? You would think that the Divorce Attorneys Division of the Bar Association would be out en masse lobbying for gay marriage.

I’m telling you…it’s an untapped gold mine for divorce lawyers. Just think about this for a second - across the board, regardless of occupation or location, men earn more money than women. Two men with decent salaries get married and it doesn’t work out. The spouse making the lesser salary is probably still making a considerable amount more than a female spouse would be. Ergo…the divorce lawyer can charge them a higher fee to handle their case.

I wonder if the Bar Association trolls the blogs looking to steal people’s ideas like the tabs do? If this idea turns up in a pro-gay marriage ad - you guys remember that I said it first!

BC - I’ve got 6 siblings…it ain’t wasn’t all that bad…then again, I was a kid, not the parent!

anyone who bashes Jen in this forum has a real inferiority complex in ref to jen and brad. they feel they have demean her to help their star look less of a tramp - when everyone who is alive in this world can see that Jolie invaded a marriage - wether it was coming to an end or not - she entered an illicit affair with a man who was still married.
Jen is sadly caught up in this media circus and its the freaks who will not leave her alone. they feel that they must discredit her life her chosen path …
but the fact remains. brad married her because of the good and caring person she is . he still stands by this and still has extreme respect for her.
jolie can never touch a bond that they made - it will last forever - most married couples who have shared business interests and friends will continue to be civil and keep the friendship they made whilst together.

jolie has the same with Johnny lee miller and no one complains or slams the guy, its because the Anti Jolie forum writers understand this bond and so dont see it as a threat to jolie pitts.
