WASHINGTON: Pune’s photographers may be peering through treetops and stalking atop skyscrapers, palpitant in the hope of getting a shot of the couple famously called Brangelina.
But unless “Mr and Mrs Smith” will otherwise, the desi paparazzi may have to fork out a fortune for the coveted photos if recent records are any indication.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, the world’s most ambushed glam couple, has not only made monkey of the media but also milked it in style with a pricey ploy: they will themselves provide pictures if the media pays out big bucks to fund charities of their choice.
In the most recent instance, the firm of Jolie and Pitt sold the first pictures of their new-born daughter Shiloh to People magazine (from the CNN-Time stable) for a staggering $ 4.1 million (about Rs 16 crores).
The magazine Hello! Won British rights for the pix for $ 3.5 million, while other some other bids brought the total close to $ 10 million (Rs 45 crores), making it the most expensive celebrity pix of all time.
Many hopefuls such as celebrity publications OK! magazine, Us Weekly , and the tabloid National Enquirer (which had paid an undisclosed seven figure sum for Michael Jackson’s first child) went home with nothing to show after a bidding war arranged by Getty Images — a brutal all night event that some said was the couple’s revenge on the paparazzi. The two-some have been hounded by the media ever since they became an ‘item’ after the hit action movie Mr and Mrs Smith.
Meanwhile, proceeds from the sale are being given to several charities, with two contributions of $ 1 million each already sent to Global Action for Children and Medecins sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders.
Earlier, the couple had sold pictures of their holiday in Kenya to raise money for other charities, a trend that has also seen Britney Spears sell pix of her first born to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims.

No one knows if People recovered its ‘investment’ (it raised is cover price for that particular issue from the usual $3.49 to $3.99) but the magazine’s Web site received 25 million hits on a single day the pix were expected to go up.

Shiloh was born on May 27 this year in Swakopmund, Namibia, where the glam couple shuttered themselves to escape the voyeuristic and vulturistic paparazzi – to no avail. Photogs scoured the world looking for them and finally homed in to Namibia. But much as they tried, they came up empty till Brangelins ‘rescued’ them — for $ 10 million.

Shiloh will be with her parents in Pune along with her siblings Maddox (of Cambodian origin) and Zahara (of Ethiopian origin), both of whom were adopted by Jolie before Shiloh was born.

Whether Pune paparazzi will be luckier and whether Brangelina will ‘click’ with the desi media is to be seen. The couple is expected to stay in India for a month while they shoot for A Mighty Heart, the story of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl who was murdered by Pakistani extremists.
