I haven’t read the whole thread but I’ve got to respond to this
stuff about how dangerous India is. I’ve been to India many
times for work. I’ve visited Mumbai, New Delhi, (a few weeks at a
time), spent a day in Jaipur and a day in Agra to see the Taj
Mahal. I felt safer in those cities then I do in New York, San
Francisco, Seattle etc.

Let me tell you straight, I’ve visited and lived in many places in
the world. I’ve been to just about every country in Asia other
then North Korea (funny about that isn’t it?). The only continents
I’ve not visited and spent several weeks of my life in are South
America, Africa and the Antartic.

Of all the places I’ve visited, there are only 2 places I feel truly
unsafe. These are:

(1) Manila (sorry Missouri Fan and others, but the kidnappings
there are something to worry about);

(2) And the US. Why? Because crazy people in the US can be
carrying a gun. I read about the gunning down of 11 innocent
Amish girls in America this week. In the last couple of months in
the US, I read of 2 other killings of a similar nature (you know,
crazy gunman takes gun, shoots a bunch of innocent people who
have not done anything wrong to him). Now, crazy people exist
everywhere. They exist in Europe, they exist in India. And there
are probably as many crazy people in Europe and India (per
100,000 people) as there are in the US. BUT A crazy person in
Europe or India will have a much more difficult time getting
access to guns. So, in the heat of the moment, they might grab
a knife, an axe and believe me, they can do some damage with
those things but I think we can all agree, less damage then
someone with a gun. The teacher in the Amish school might have
tried to over power a knifewielder, given a chance for the children
to run.

Terrorist bombs can go off anywhere but add to that equation,
easily accessible guns, and yes, there is greater danger. Just look
at the comparative statistics of death by firearms. The US
statistics are equal to that of a banana/cocain republic like
Columbia. I’m NOT CRITICISING the American people’s desire to
bear arms. America is a democracy and the people have a right to
choose how they want to live, how it expresses their values. But
does this right to bear arms increase the risk of being shot by a
crazy person – Statistically, the answer is YES.
