FIRST LOOK: Angelina Jolie as Mariane Pearl in ‘A Mighty Heart’

Angelina Jolie plays Mariane, widow of the Wall Street Journal reporter, who was murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002 while researching a story on the links between “shoe bomber” Richard Reid and Islamic spiritual leader Sheikh Mubarak Gilani. Mariane was pregnant with their child (inset) when her husband was kidnapped.

Jolie said in a weekend statement that she was disappointed not to be filming in Pakistan, “a country I love and have visited three times.” But security concerns pushed the filming to the western Indian city of Pune, which was chosen because it resembles Karachi, Pakistan.

WOWOWOWOW!!!!!!!!!!! Here is the very first movie still of Angelina Jolie in the role of Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart (2007). The film is shooting in Pune, India and is based on the 2003 book A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl, by Mariane Pearl. More pictures in the gallery of Mariane, Daniel, and son Adam Pearl. A big thanks to oldie!!

UPDATE :: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie donated $100,000 to the Daniel Pearl Foundation through the recently formed Jolie-Pitt Foundation. Brad and Angie released this statement: “On this day our thoughts go out to Danny’s family. The Daniel Pearl Foundation is celebrating this day, his birthday, with music festivals around the world. The festivals are a great reminder of not just Danny’s work as a journalist but of his life and his love of music.”

#937 African Girl
Exactly. Who better to convey those emotions and be believable in
that scenario? Michelle Pfeiffer was really good as a teacher in an
inner city school, but she just had something missing. Believablity
was it. She seems always to be holding something back, and this
had to be a woman who went for it in life. That’s why the movie
tanked. So Angie is believable in the role, who cares if she’s taller,
shorter, darker, lighter, thinner, fatter, or whatever than Marianne
Pearl? She can play the woman’s heart, her emotions, her drive,
her beliefs, her ability to be comfortable in Pakistan, etc.

923 | African Girl | - GREAT POST AG. I really don’t understand what the big deal is all about, Angie is playing Mariane Pearl, because she is the best actress to play role and she will do the role justice, and I don’t understand why people are going all crazy because a white woman is playing a black woman, and then there is the thing, Mariane is not black, she is multiracial; I think that people need to calm their asses down, and realize that this is not about race, this is a human story, a story about love, courageous and yes tragedy, and race should not be enter into it.

930 | African Girl | - ITA AG, Well Said, and please no singing

To African Girl

Thank you. Marianne isn’t Black. Her father is Dutch and her mother is Cuban (which isn’t Black but a mix of things, including Black). I know that’s hard for some other Black people to take, but I agree with the fact that it has to do with our American perspective. Marianne is multiracial and apparently feels like she can define herself anyway she so choose. Because she has European in her background she felt that she could agree with a person of namely European descent portray her. Angie is being dressed and tanned to look more like her, but so. I can’t wait to see the movie.

Also, I will not have other Black people try and call me out and say “You don’t know your history”. How dare you assume what I know of myself as a Black person. Just because you have a problem with something doesn’t mean all other Black people should agree. Black people are not a homogenous group, we are made up of a variety of different people of a variety of different experiences and perspectives.

I think it’s funny how people bring up Jennifer Beals as a potential actress for the role. Jennifer Beals certainly doesn’t consider herself Black and not only that has mainly portrayed white women in films. The closest she’s come to portraying Black is by portraying a biracial person who’s passing for other. She certainly wouldn’t have a problem with the casting because she doesn’t follow the same racial rules as some do.

Thandie would have been good, but only because Thandie isn’t American, like Pearl, and also doesn’t follow the same rules of race American’s do. She doesn’t consider herself Black and really doesn’t like to talk about her race. Angela is the best choice because unlike Thandie she posseses the same worldview. Angelina and Pearl hit it off and that’s why she ok’d the casting, or endorsed it.

At the end of the day this is a discussion of how Pearl sees herself and apparently she sees herself similar to Angelina.

I did not know, that Mrs. Perl is black. Where is the problem?

Where’s that website you guys are always referring to as aniston friendly? I want to go over there and screw around some till we get a new thread.

tank’s jared !she looks so beautiful!

Also, the only reason why I consider Thandie good for the part is because I like Thandie Newton. Honestly her and Pearl don’t look similar at all. They have two very different racial make-ups.

I can’t wait to see the movie and I’m going to read Pearl’s book too.

hi all CLINIQUA AND RDT HOW ARE LADIES!

thank you for restoring some rationality and sanity to this thread African Girl, Be sane, lula29, freidaflo, Indie, and also to the rest who presented some good points about this debate over Angie playing Marianne Pearl. Atleast there is one blog that that has some sane people on it.

Jen's Mama @ 10/11/2006 at 10:50 am

For Misty and those who don’t understand about contacting the media when a slur has been mentioned, do you not participate in the US political process? My mailbox and e-mail box is filled with “calls to action” just like Cliniqua’s…addresses, suggested titles, sometimes even the actual protest. Some I agree with and do something about and others I ignore.

Cliniqua is protecting Angelina, which was made necessary by Aniston’s VF kick-off at the gates of Hell. Slowly the tide is changing, but when pathetic geriatics like Douglas and Trump, whoremasters themselves, weigh in on CNN,and the like, then it is time for a response.

I said it before and I will say it again, THANKS CLINIQUA for protecting a maligned sister.

good morning, everybody? no new thread today? well, we shall just have to redeem this one until jared gives us a fresh one. thanks AG, lula29 and everyone else for being the voice of reason this morning. the simple fact is that angie’s going to bring a lot of meat to this role, marianne saw that and that’s why she has the part. those of you who don’t like it, need to get over it. the film is being shot. it will be released with angelina jolie as the star. and if angie is true to herself as an actor and you choose to miss it based on your obsession with pigmentation, you’re going to miss one incredible movie.

did anyone see the HBO special last night on Daniel Pearl? i was too chicken to watch it–especially after reading angie’s refugee article.

Is HBO going to play it again? i missed it last night..

G and Angelah…

I watched it last night the DP story with the comparison of his assassin. I was scared at first but I was really interesting after I sat there and really listen. I didn’t want to watch at first b/c I want AJ’s movie to be the first depiction of DP but I’m glad I saw it. I cried when they were talking about how he was kidnapped and killed…they cut him up in 10 pieces, bagged those parts and buried him…it’s amazing what hate can lead someone to do.

I know AJ is going to be great in this role…just great!!!

franks n beans @ 10/11/2006 at 11:07 am

Cliniqua, longtime lurker here. Never felt the need to post because I’ve always agreed with and enjoyed what you and the rest of the Brangelina community have had to say. However I’m rather saddened and embarrassed by your 2-day rampage on this board. We all agree that Dumb Trumb is a horses ass and what he said of AJ was unjustified. But most of us realized the source of the trash talk - a horses ass. I know you were just venting, but I’m dissapointed by your reaction to other posters who all agreed with you, but felt you needed a breather or to chill because the whole “lets send emails to cnn, nbc” thing was a little over the top (if not embarrassing).

You sound even more irrational everytime you try to defend yourself to another poster. So let’s just drop it. Suck it up. Blame this episode on bad chinese food or something. We are all friends here who love Brangelina.

Nice Post, I am way behind again today, trying to catch up..

lula29 and others like you good to read your posts. The rest of
the world don’t think Marianne Pearl needs to be defined as a
black woman just because African Americans in America see her
as a black woman. All these people insisting that Marianne is
black, makes me think there is a sort of snobbery going on. I
wonder if a man of the same racial mix and back ground, but who
was convicted of being a serial child rapist and murderer -
whether the same people would claim that person to be black. Or
whether, if such a man were described as black, they wouldn’t say
“hey, this is a racism to describe him as black when in fact, its not
clear how much black blood he has and he isn’t even American.
How come we African Americans always get this bad press.”

off topic!madonna indeed adopting a boy!im happy for her.unlike that x her money goes to mani/pedi and to mc millan just to make her look more ugly…eerrkkk!

#867 sad so shes going to that okray?and talk what charity is not just my thing!wowwohohohho she should go to iraq for that charity thing.

959 | angelah

yeah. HBO will show it again. they’re still showing Spike Lee’s Katrina documentary, so they’ll probably have this one heavy rotation, too.

960 | Me Again!

i’m keeping myself from crying now and i haven’t seen it. angie’s going to be great. she and marianne are good friends and she’ll be able to slip into her shoes easily. i hope it doesn’t take too much toll on her, though.

G & Ang…I forgot…it comes on again Thursday 10pm CST…check out HBO’s website…there’s a little video.

Check the schedule as well…did anyone see “The Departed…HBO First Look”? It was GOOD.

Need to find a babysitter so I can go and see this one…it looks like it’s going to be really good.

Off topic…G…when will you post that fic about one of the recent threads…it’s been so long I forgot the topic…I know you recently posted a fic but I didn’t think it was about what was discussed here…I could be wrong…let me know…thanks

Oh it was about liberation day…I think.

repost 879

I keep reading about people who object to Angelina playing Marianne because she looks black and she does have some black blood in her and Angelina doesn’t.

But do people like “SR” and “Michelle” understand that this movie is not about a black woman losing a white husband. It’s about a woman who lost her husband because he was a reporter who was in Pakistan and got beheaded by the Pakistanis. It didn’t make her pain any greater or less just because she looks Black and had a white husband. And how that would not affect how Angelina portrays those emotions. Do you understand that this movie is not about a Black/Puerto Rican/ Chinese/ French woman who was look for justice for the death of her White husband? This is about a woman who was pregnant and went in search of finding the justice for her husband.

Jennifer Lopez, a Puerto Rican playing Selena, a Mexican is a different story because in the movie, it did deal with how there is a prejudice against Mexicans. And how Selena’s father was a Mexican who worked in America to support his family and their financial situation was poor because they were Mexican immigrants and trying to make it in America.

Kirsten Dunst getting flack for playing a French queen would bring flack also because their is long history between Americans and the French and it isn’t the greatest. So for her to play one of the most well known French figuers from history and getting criticized for is understandable.

My point is that the movie about Selena and Marie Antoinette does have to do with their ethnicity, race and the country they are from.

The story of Marianne Pearl is about a pregnant woman who lost her husband and was trying to find justice. Those people who killed Daniel Pearl killed him because he was an American Journalist. As far as I know Futterman and Jolie are both Americans. And Angelina Jolie is part French like Marianee Pearl, so she would be able to pull off a French accent. Also because she is a mom and just give birth herself, she can relate Marianne being pregnant back when she was in Pakistan looking for Pearl’s killers.

Renee Zellwegger didn’t get flack for playing a Brit in Bridget Jones’ diary.

Halle Berry is not getting flack for playing a White woman in an upcoming movie.

These women are not being criticized and neither should Angelina Jolie.

967 | Me Again!

it wasn’t about BLD. i just posted it then. it was about brad discovering angie’s tattoos. i promised 4Q and everybody else i’d write one about that ages ago and finally got around to it in time for the party. it’s up on EA, titled Skin Deep.

lookwhaticando @ 10/11/2006 at 11:36 am

Black face? And here I was getting all offended because I thought
she was in Cuban face! On behalf of all Cubans, whether or not they
care themselves, I am offended, shocked, I tell ya!

Calling Cliniqua irrational and ridiculing her is not a very tactful way of ending this discussion,
I too think this discussion is already played out. But, I do want to add this to what you said. The night before last, when this news hit, there were SEVERAL of us who were upset and wanting to know who to write to complain about this. Cliniqua got the information for us to use or not use at our discretion. YOU may have felt our wanting to show support for angie in this way was being “over the top” but many of us didnt agree.

Can we stop picking on each other now and move on? I hope so.
