Babel Review

Caught a screening of Babel last night. How did Brad Pitt measure up? Even ex Gwyneth Paltrow told NYDN that he’ll take home an Oscar: “It’s the best performance Brad’s ever given. [Babel] makes you want to take good care of your children.” Here’s how it went down…

3 different countries. 4 groups of people. Lives forever changed. A man in Morocco is sold a rifle that he gives to his two sons to protect their goats from jackals. While practicing their shooting, the younger son accidentally shoots an American woman, (Cate Blanchett) who is vacationing with her husband (Brad Pitt) aboard a tour bus. The movie establishes the characters that are further connected to the American couple, the children who are with their Mexican nanny back in the States and the original owner of the rifle, a Japanese businessman whose daughter is deaf-mute.

(Continued before the jump)

In the course of a few difficult days, these people will find themselves lost but ultimately discover that their bonds with their families are what finally help them rediscover what they have lost. Although lengthier than most feature films, Babel is not a slow film, going back and forth between the characters, never leaving one hanging. Furthermore, director Alejandro González Iñárritu of 21 Grams, Amores Perros, is able to capture the true essence of these countries with a soundtrack that is a myriad of trans-continental compositions and the issues that people there deal with and how audience members can relate.

Caution: Not for the light-hearted. This film will touch upon issues that are very much alive in our society today. So if you liked Syriana and/or Crash, then chances are Babel is a must-see film for you.

Babel opens in theaters in NY/LA tomorrow, Oct. 27, and Nov. 10 everywhere else.

Batter’s up! OMGBlog has Mario Lopez playing baseball with his pants down low and his shirt hanging off his waist… Where are these screen captures from? Anyone know?

Mario Lopez and Dallas Cowboys’ legend Emmitt Smith were the top two vote-getters revealed during last night’s results show. They are one of four couples left in the Dancing with the Stars competition. Will Mario score a home-run and make it all the way?

Babel was…meh.

WAY better than Crash though. That movie just plain sucked balls.

Inarritu is too heavy handed. If I wanted to get messages preached at me I’d go to church.

I Love this man and his family! Go BAMZS!

Hey, Jared. How was Gael Garcia Bernal in this movie? He’s my favorite actor, and I am so excited that he will be getting more exposure in America.

# 4

Thanks JJ, I can not wait to see this movie.

# 5

Angelface, Gael’s role was small but poignant in terms of moving the plot. I wish his role had been bigger.

I know you did but someone posted over there your post asking us NOT to post on x’s thread AND they put your name on it. I thought something was odd about that. Someone was posting Lylians posts from BAMZS threads also over there. She posted later saying she was NOT the one reposting them.

Thanks again JJ, allez BAMZS fans!!!!!

Gael Garcia Bernal is just too cute. I wish we could get more pictures of him. :(

a must see film

8 | bamzs 4-ever -Thank you, I’m glad you like it. I’m working on a new story right now. Hopefully, I will be able to post the 1st chapter this week-end. ( Still undecided on the period piece or a contemporary piece, we will see)

from tmz.com

While Brad Pitt’s people in the U.S. are still fuming over the invasion of the actors Hollywood Hills compound by an E! Entertainment camera crew, Brad himself didn’t looked phased at all as he returned from a relaxing beach weekend in Goa, India with Angelina and the kids.

The family spent the weekend at a high-end resort in search of some quality rest and relaxation — and hopefully that’s just what they got. Now, after all the peace and quiet, Brad is faced with the big decision of whether or not to press charges against the network — a decision that could no doubt bring some unwanted stress to the entire family.

Going to have to read this thread later, so much fun, so little timeBBFN

Hey thanks for telling us about the close up. Here is some comments from WWTDD , on those pics of X hiding behind that water bottle in her car recently, “Oh hey look there’s Jennifer Aniston driving out of the…” (Aniston places the clear water bottle over her face) “ … OH MY GOD SHES GONE! SHE DISAPPEARED! WHERE DID SHE GO!?! DID SHE FALL OUT OF THE CAR!?! AND NOW THE CAR IS DRIVING ITSELF! IT’S A GHOST CAR!”

Is this really Aniston’s plan to hide? Holding up a bottle of water? She might as hide behind a “Friends” DVD or hold up a magazine with Jennifer Aniston on the cover. I’d hide my face too if I looked like that but she needs to do better than this. She might as well duck behind a window or crouch and hide behind a shoe. Fantastic job Jen. You’re a master of disguise. You should work for the CIA or something. With your cunning, and enough water bottles, you could infiltrate the Taliban and save the world.

Hallo dear BAMZS fans on BAMZSville !!!

WOW I have to much to catch up ,did I miss something ???

AG, I just finished reading the last thread, you were on a roll yesterday. So you have just as much disdain for Oprah like I do.

I know she is doing wonderful things in Africa, and every little bit helps. But she does not show any empathy for the people. I guess my dislike of her started a few years ago when she did this 2 hour show on ABC, all through the program, she talked about how these aids orphans pulled at her strings, and how they were her children and she was considering adopting them. Right at the end of the program, before she said she decided not to adopt because she is not cut out for motherhood. Yes, I can respect that. But with Oprah’s wealth and fame, the doors that could have been opened to those children would have been unimaginable.

One of the worst problems with African countries is corrupt leaders who are propped up by the West. When people graduate from college, there is no employment, most of them end up migrating abroad in search of better life thereby causing more brain drain. Who is going to build up these countries if they are losing their most educated and talented to the West?

One of the few leaders who actually had the right idea was Jerry Rawlings of Ghana. He came in and basically got rid of most of the corrupt leaders, but Jerry’s mom was Irish and he spent some time there growing up.
The new Liberian President is a product of Havard Education with conntacts in IMF. These exposures and contacts make their jobs of rebuilding easier.
Why applaud Angie and Brad is they are giving these children access to very good education, access to the powers that be worldwide, that should they decide to go back and help their own people, they have all the tools and contacts that will need to succeed. Oprah with jer money could have done that, she could have all the nannies that she needs.

The trading practices are so heavily against the African countries. I saw on CNN where Ethiopia is locked on some kind of Battle with star bucks over coffee beans. Starbucks pays pennies per lb of coffee but we pay 2-$3 for a cup of coffee. African countries cannot make decent money on their exports to the west, most of the markets are closed to them any way. So African problem is multi dimensional, every little bit helps but I am a firm believer in the adage that said give a man a fish and you feed him for a day but teach a man how to fish, you feed him for life.

Did you not have any idea of what you were seeing? Why didnt you do some research before going so to find out what you’d be instore for. It’s your opinion to have, but it sounds like you’d been happier seeing something that didn’t require you to engage your senses much and as such I sure hope you didn’t pay for the ticket because that WOULD suck.

jpf

Yes AG, I got the new batteries…THANK YOU :)

You’ve got to see Syriana Alex, AG’s ex-fiance is awesome in it, eventhough he has to gain 30 pounds to get the Oscar. ( *whisper*-I think that was the 30 pounds straw that broke AG’s back, LOL).

Brad is on a roll. Just to think that he is only 43 (on Dec. 18th) years old. These are his best years personally and professionally.

Indie - Your post is excellent! However, I have a problem with
Oprah bit. Just because you have money, does not mean you
will make a good parent. You can give a kid all the economic
opportunities in the world, but that does not always
translate into a well ajusted human being. You can grow up
with poor parents, and turn out exceptionally well. And Oprah
is a perfect example. It takes a person who is not selfish and
have enough self-awareness to know the difference between
nature and nuture. Yes, it’s possible for her to have a child.
However, just because you can does not mean you should. I’t
her right to choose. Oprah does her part and plenty more, let
us all do the rest.

African Girl -

I remember reading once that George Clooney had no desire to have kids and pass on his genes. Now you really did not want someone who thinks lke that for a husband, did you?

31 | Indie | Hey Indie, great post. Do you know come to think of it , I started tuning off Okra after she started those stupid gifts for everyone on the show crapolla, it was before the pitty parties . She even gave away cars for crying out loud !!!!! The people in her audince aren’t poor, maybe a few but the rest are mini-van moms. The poverty at these other countries can not be compared to ours, sorry i am ready for rotten tomatoes, we have poverty I accept, but the level of poverty can not be compared. At least we have social services, foodstamps, shelters for battered kids and women etc. , not good enough I know but heck of alot better than what these countries have….So to me Okra is not sincere at all, it is all about her, no wonder she loves Jen….they are made out of the same cloth.

Estelle and Gitane, stop whining. I am a #1 (maybe #2, after AG) GC fan, and yet I am not even invited to the wedding. And I watched Good Nite and Good Luck, and Syriana in the theaters, and loved both of them. Also intend to see The Good German when it comes out. And OC13 (to 40) of course.

Hi Kemo, welcome to JJ. Missouri Fan is our “greeter” but since she is not here, I’ll fill in for her. Welcome. I have bookmarked one of the Russian sites that has beautiful drawings of AJ.

guli - Oprah takes herself way too seriously, I agree. I’m not
sure the burden of solving the world’s problem rest on her
sholders alone. As for injecting Jennifer Aniston into this, I
won’t even bother responding because it trivializes the issue at
hand.

58 | ntt

who’s whining? i’ve been on a rollercoaster ride with this wedding from the start. now AG’s giving me the boot because i haven’t seen syriana? after all the work i’ve done? and, we still don’t know if this wedding’s gonna happen. they change their mind every week! look, as soon as the film makes it to STARZ or HBO, i’ll watch it. i’ll sit down with a bottle of rum and a handful of aspirin and watch it.

56 | Tijen |Hey Tijen i am fine, I am taking a mini break i don’t post much but lurk. I’ll get my enthusiasm back soon, right now i am taking it easy :-) So how is the family, how is Aron doing. African Girl @ 10/26/2006 at 3:03 pm

#32 / Indie
Lol….oh my! Was my disdain that obvious? To be honest, I try to stay away from anything Oprah. I love the fact that she’s helped shine the light on issues like AIDS/HIV in Africa but there is something about her that looks forced…..her emotions come off really forced and when I watch her, I find myself rolling my eyes, which makes me feel terrible because I am indirectly rolling my eyes at other people’s sad story. So to avoid that, I avoid watching her all together. I’d rather find my info somewhere else, than watch Oprah. This is also why I like AJ, her emotions are quite honest.

I remember the show you’re talking about and that show was about “Oprah going to Africa” and not “the African children”…..you know, I don’t know if I’m expressing myself very well, bottom line is, Oprah has made herself seem larger than life, so everything she does….good and very good, pales in comparison. I laughed my head off, when she said getting turned away from the store in Paris was the “worst experience” of her life. I swear I was like “wow, to live in Ms. O’s world, were THAT is the worst experience of one’s life”….and this came from someone who has witnessed people suffering and was “touched” by their bravery The thing is….. Ms. O has completely lost touch with reality, she lives in her world and that’s why she thinks watching her use a public bathroom or pumping her own gas, makes for good TV.

Let’s not even get started on the problems with Africa because a year from today, we’d still be talking about it. I truly believe that Education is the first step. We’ve these uneducated men ruling……doing things they know nothing about. There is nothing as dangerous as an illiterate with power and to see just how dangerous, I beg you all to go see The Last King of Scotland, when it comes out. It’s based on the rise and fall of Idi Amin….one of the worst dictator in Africa. When you read about him, you just shake your head and wonder how in the world someone like him became the Head of State of a country. Like I said, we can go on about this all day long.

Alexanderina @ 10/26/2006 at 3:04 pm

46 | Estelle | - Well fine then, I guess I will just have to be the a ex-bridemaid, that is just fine then, a girl made one mistake and she is cut off from the biggest wedding of the year, I guess I will just have to wrangled out an invite to Crazy Tom’s wedding in Italy then

54 | Ben | I am always open to another point of view with any one who is open minded. I do not mean minimize Oprah’s contribution but she just looks down on the people she is trying to help unlike Angelina, who is able to empathize and be respectful of the people she is trying to help. The measure of a person is not how they treat the people above them but how they treat the people below them.

57 | guli | LOL at the minivan majority. Wasn’t it Lainey that coined that phrase? She is another crazy woman that is full of ****

++++++++++++++++

I watched Madonna on O yesterday. Everything that M said regarding the reason she adopted, and the goals she is reaching for in her involvment with Africa, AJ has already said it in her interviews or press conferences, like raising Madd and Z so they can one day go back to their countries and do good for them. AJ is 16 years younger than M, and yet so much more ahead of her.
As for Oprah, well, I just hope that she continues to shine the light on worthy subjects, instead of having stupid actresses on to deny rumors about their private lives.

Oprah is giving people what they are interested in watching.
She’s a product of our capitalist ideal which is why she’s
$$$$$$$$$.

I think Africa had help being this poor. Let’s not forget the
oppressors. As for the dictators, they rise from the suffering of
the masses. And are more often then not western educated
men. Once they can’t serve the people and their masters at
the same time, their gread take over and replaced by
lawlessness. When it comes to Africa, it is a failure of of our

Wow!..look at how much Angelina has aged him.

I beg you all to go see The Last King of Scotland, when it comes out. It’s based on the rise and fall of Idi Amin….one of the worst dictator in Africa. When you read about him, you just shake your head and wonder how in the world someone like him became the Head of State of a country. Like I said, we can go on about this all day long.

68 | African Girl |

The movie is out already. I watched it 2 weeks ago, it would have been so funny if it was not so serious. Therein in that movie lies the problem in Africa, where an uneducated mad man can assume power with the help of the British government. Forest Whitaker was superb in his role as Idi Amin, and he has to be sure bet for an oscar nod.

thanks ntt. love to read more tomorrow. peace. Before sleeping my prayer to God is that He will protect the jolie-pitt family. love all their supporter. i love u all (я люблю Вас всех )

Dirty Tricks has been announced recently, so it hasn’t begun shooting yet.
I wonder if Brad will take a role in the movie or not. But one thing is sure: he will produce it.

I’m so envious of you Americans: you have a chance to see Babel. Most of the critics are raving about his performance, but it’s really interesting that he las to get rid of his pretty boy look, and masked as an 59 years old man (in Babel Richard, the character he is playing is 59), to garner recognition. I’m glad he is able to show his real talent.
If only we could take here the Indian photo of him you know the one made last week during a commercial: he looks so yummy there, Angie did make him a man.

http://wwtdd.com/index.phtml?t=BRAD+PITT+

Hey Africa Girl: If Okra feels that being turned away from a store is Paris is the ‘worse thing’ that could ever happen to her, then her priorities have indeed changed. She’s turned into a ‘Don’t you know who I am’, and that’s sad. Jennifer Lopez was in Bloomingdals one day a few years ago, on a very long line. She goes up to the cashier and says, “Don’t you know who I am?” Well, being New York, the cashier tells her, “I don’t care who you are, there’s a line. Either you wait, or get on another line”. Since my friend is a buyer at Bloomies, she heard all about it when it happened. I could not stop laughing, because that is exactly what I would have said. The ’so called’ celebrities think that they can snap a finger and people will jump for them. Well, they’ve got to be brought back down to earth every now and then. I don’t think at all that the store is Paris turned her away because she was black. I mean, come on, the woman’s face is all over the planet. They were closing, I think, and if I was closing the the store after a long day, then too bad. Come back tomorrow. ONE EXCEPTION, though — if Brad came a callin, it would be more than the store that would be opened — ooooooooooh, Maria being naughty again.

angie fan @ 10/26/2006 at 4:19 pm

130 | Maria | How are you lady? I’m not posting much just taking a break. But I really didn’t know about the Janet J . that is funny

Hey Angie Fan: Yup! The same store. I was watching TV one afternoon and they were talking with Janet and how much she loves France and that she wanted to buy an apartment there once. She had called the store in the morning — SHE called, not someone in her party — asking if she could stop by to look at a few things. She did not know they were going to close the store for her, as she had security people going with her. She was pretty touched by it all. When she was ready to leave, a man comes by with his beautiful black lab and asked if Janet could take a picture with the dog. Well, doesn’t Ms Jackson get on the floor with the dog, while the dog is licking her face and she’s just laughing and having a great time. I think some people remember where they came from and not just bring it up with they want ratings, and sometimes they need to be brought down a few pegs to remember that they may have all the money in the world, but it doesn’t make them better than those who do not.

so now i’m fired? for not seeing 1 movie? that’s it! i’ve had it with you fickle people! first the wedding is on. then it’s off. then it’s on again. then there’s ellen barkin-gate and suitcase girl-gate. then there’s the “we won’t marry until everyone in the WORLD can”. and somehow after that grandiose posturing, the wedding is on again. i’ve stuck with you through all of this back and forth, up and down, even gave you a cybersmack or two when you really needed it, and now i’m fired because i didn’t see syriana…

will somebody please get me the phone numbers of Steven Huvane, Janice Min, and Leslie Bennetts? i have a few stories to tell. especially about that cake tasting a few weeks ago!

AG: A funny for you on GC. My baby sister (niece’s mum) LOOOOOOOOVES GC. Well, one day, she was being a real pain, so I feel she needs a spanking and wait until evening when she’s in a better mood and say, “Wow, I just heard that GC is gay and that the only reason he doesn’t marry, is that he’s been seeing this guy for years. All Hollywood knows this, but since he’s a nice guy, they don’t want to say anything. You know, kind of like Rock Hudson and Richard Chamberlain’. Wellll, that girl’s face turned so white, I thought she would just faint! She says no words when she’s leaving my room. As she gets closer to her room, I yell out ‘GOT YA!!!!’ I had to lock my door in fear of my life. HA! HA! A few minutes later she comes back and says, “I don’t care if he were gay. He’ll always be hot”. So, true, so true! He’s hot and will always be hot!!

Gitane: Calm down Mama!!! You’re not fired!!! How could anyone fire YOU? The man isn’t marrying anybody. He’s having too much fun being GC. If I had those numbers, you’d have them, trust me!

(He is playing a 49 year old man). And when the pictures of the commercial appeared a few days ago and it’s obvious how HOT Brad still is none is saying a word about it. BRAINLESS people!

And no I haven’t seen “Syriana” or “Good night and Good luck” and I won’t until you clear this mess. LOL! :)

Hey guys — did you read the caption that goes with the cutie pie blown up pic of Shi over at WWTDD (What Would Tyler Durden Do?) the guy who runs this site is really funny, best part of all — he doesn’t like JA - LOL

“If you need any more proof that God is a dude, just remember that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt had a girl. The pope should open his Christmas mass with that. Just say that and then hold up the Tomb Raider poster. And then say “Is good, I like”. And he should say it like Borat. Because people like Borat. Churches would have a line out the door. Brad Pitt could wear a little Dorothy costume for Halloween and prolly be the third hottest chick I’ve ever seen. So add that up and you get Shiloh. And she looks pretty freakin cute here, in these pictures taken this week, either in India or the gas station I go to where they yell at me if I ask to use the bathroom.”

ArabianFan - When it comes to having children, off course

Umm…hmmmm….you go girl. Preach it! I ain’t seen any Porgie movies and never will…but…I REALLY WANNA GO TO ITALY!

LOL…another funny blurb from that dude at WWTDD.com –

“Many are wondering if this may finally be the year Martin Scorsese wins an Academy Award for directing “the Departed”, the best reviewed movie of the year so far and a genuine box office hit to boot. If it does win Best Picture, one of the producers to claim a statue would be Brad Pitt, as his company Plan B productions produced the film. Pitts former partner at Plan B would not win an award. That would be Jennifer Aniston, who owned half of the production company when “the Departed” was made but lost all rights in the divorce settlement. Aniston got the mansion in Malibu, Pitt got Plan B. Fox 411 says:

Jennifer Aniston’s name has been erased from the list of producers since she and Brad Pitt split. It was their company, Plan B, that was originally involved, along with producer Brad Grey before he left to run Paramount. The result is that Grey and Pitt’s names stayed on, even though they did nothing to make the movie, and Aniston’s was dumped. “Brad controlled the credits,” a source says, which explains a few other things.

This would maybe seem cruel, except I don’t like Jennifer Aniston and don’t really care. And it would be fun to see her cry some more on Oprah if she didn’t get an Academy Award. God knows this was her only chance. I asked my tivo to record “Rumor Has It”, and instead it ran away in the middle of the night.”

Alex: Afraica Sunshine I made up, but I wasn’t fooling on the Kenya Sky. That’s the name of a girl at work. Her mother went to Africa for her brother’s wedding (she’s from Kenya) while preggies and woke up one day to a beautiful African sky — hence her daughter’s name. When her husband heard it, he wasn’t pleased, but got use to it. She’s a very nice girl and is leaving us, as she’s going to be moving to Germany with her husband. Her husband is German and has a fab offer to work for German company. She’s very sad to be leaving New York, as she loves it so, but they are keeping their apartment here, so she’s not too upset. OH! She’s also a BP fan and says that her husband looks just like him. I saw pictures, and he doesn’t, but it’s OK, she’s in love and wants to imagine her husband looking like BP — nothing wrong in that.

Give someone a little power and money, and they are no longer a fighter of a cause, they become a figther for there personal cause — greed and power. Sad, but all so true.

Ben, I understand you not wanting to get into an argument over this but I’d like to add this, the issue with Oprah is that she does tend to carry on like her appearance IS the answer….she comes off like she thinks she’s their savior (actually, I won’t blame her for thinking like that, after all there are certain people who believe what O says, goes) AJ on the other hand, comes off in a more “I’m here to do the best I can to help….I don’t have all the answers but I’m here to learn.” type manner.

I don’t know how well you recall the African Trip Indie mentioned but from what I recall, it was all about “How Oprah “felt”, witnessing these people’s horror” it wasn’t about “These people’s Horror” ….Oprah came, Oprah saw, Oprah was sad, Oprah gave gifts, and viola! Oprah “felt” better and all was well with the world….not the real world, Oprah’s world. On the children’s part, it wasn’t about how they felt living in abject poverty….oh nooooo, it was more about how they felt having Queen Oprah visit them….the big, mega rich lady from America finding time out of her busy, very very busy schedule to pay them a visit. For a minute…I was expecting the children fall down to their knees, chanting “we’re not worthy, we’re not worthy” and Ms O going “yeah I know but hey…this is why I am a good person” (by the way, totally ripped the first part from Wayne’s World….loved that movie  ). Not only that, she used the “I might adopt” bit as a cliff hanger for her show. Come now, Oprah KNEW she wasn’t gonna adopt any child but she carried like she was just to keep people watching. I am not saying she should have adopted because like you said, not everyone is cut out to be a parent but don’t lead us on….wait a sec, that sounds suspiciously familiar, no? Ahh, let’s just leave that for another day.

Again, don’t mean to start any argument just needed to get that out there. Jeez, this is why I stay away from anything Oprah coz when I get started, I can’t stop.

BBL, leaving work….quite early? Wassup with that?

Alex: She dose have a cute name. As far as her thinking her husband looks like BP. He’s blonde, blue eyes, tall and nice looking. Doesn’t look like BP, though. I guess when they’re doing the ‘nasty’, just the thought of BP makes for one great night of passion. OK, have to get some ice now.

I think that Walvis Bay is cute and will make a very pretty name for you child

AFRICAN GIRL: I want to thank you for the highlights of your OKRAH appearance. My daughter was in a car accident today [she's okay, just the car got hurt] and we are all at 6’s and 7’s here today. That was JUST the laugh I needed to forget for a minute.

Heard a review of Babel on NPR, they RAVED about it - no special mentions, but I missed the interview they then had with the director, so Brad may still have been mentioned. Like I said, things are a bit screwy here at the moment.

Brad Pitt a wedgie jokester on set 19 minutes ago

NEW YORK - Brad Pitt found an interesting way — make that walk — to blow off steam and bring some levity to the set of his new movie, “Babel.”

In an interview in Entertainment Weekly’s Oct. 30 issue, the 42-year-old actor says he amused himself and his colleagues by yanking up his pants to give himself a wedgie, sticking out his rear and waddling about like a duck. “Throughout the movie, I’d walk around like this,” he says.

“You’ve gotta find things to make you laugh during the shoot,” he adds. “Cate (Blanchett) called it the Hungry Bum.”

He explains: “When your bum’s so hungry it’s trying to eat your pants.”

His character’s story line in “Babel,” in theaters Friday, is not as amusing. He and Blanchett play husband and wife in the multinational drama that follows several families linked by a tragedy in the African desert.

Pitt felt a personal connection to the movie’s one-world message — he is, after all, the adoptive father to girlfriend Angelina Jolie’s children, Maddox, from Cambodia, and Zahara, from Ethiopia.

“Our kids come from different parts of the world, and it’s the perfect example of, if we didn’t have these perceived differences we wouldn’t be defined by geography,” he said.

“What I liked most (about the script) was this idea that we’re all the same, and it’s our lack of understanding and lack of communication that gets in the way.”

Peter Travers (rolling stone):
There is no way for a review to encompass the beautifully integrated, soul-searching portrait that Inarritu paints of a world in crisis. Pitt, raw and emotionally bruised, gives his most mature and moving performance to date. Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto brings a poet’s eye to the images. Stranded at the Mexican border, a victim of Bush immigration policy, Barraza leaves you shattered. At an ear-busting Tokyo disco, the sound goes dead so we hear only what Chieko hears. Kikuchi is unforgettable, nailing every nuance in her role. Just try to erase the sight of her, standing naked and vulnerable on a high-rise balcony while an uncaring city bustles below. All of Babel is like this – it’s impossible to shake.

Hey Real Tita: How you been? Doesn’t she take a chef with her everywhere she goes? Hey, I like potatoes, I’d have no problems there. What’s she taking about amenities? She’s got bucks, how come she didn’t stay at a ritzy hotel — oh, forgot, she wanted to be one with the people ((finger in mouth)). When I was in Egypt, we visited a great many of the wonders of the Pharohs, some of the villages we passed were poor, but the people’s faces were amazing. They smiled at you and it just made you feel good. One little guy — he must have been around four years old — was dragging this basin with a little rubber toy inside and water spilling all over the place. He looked at some of us and looked at the water bottles we all had, as we were told not to drink the water. Well, me being the Aries that I am, I went over to him and asked him his name. I asked our tour director to ask his Mum if I could give him my water bottle, as he would not take it when I offered it to him. He looked at her, she said something, and he took it. She told him something again, then he looked up and said ‘Thank You’ in Arabic. Now, I’ve got a crowd of people around me, and they are offering all their water bottles to the little guys playing — must have been around 10. They were so happy with just that one bottle of water, and this chick is complaining about amenities! She’s lost her focus, if you ask me. It’s all about HER now. Sad, very sad! OH! the little guys did not use the water bottles to fill the basin. The basin was already full of water. Several of the Mums took the bottles and put them inside their little homes.

Hey Maria - I’ve pretty much been stuck in Computer Support Hell for the last 2 weeks. It’s hard to blog at work when people are constantly wanting to ask me stupid questions. I’ve had the day of stupid questions to end all stupid questions days. I had a prof who was trying to “clean up his hard drive”. He actually asked me, “What’s the Windows folder for? I didn’t put it there and I don’t know what it is. Can I delete it?” I wanted to tell him, “Go back to your office and take your Ph.D. OFF THE FREAKING WALL because you’re too damned dumb to have an advanced degree in anything but Stupidity!” Sheesh. All I could think about was, “What other crucial folders did that stupid f$ck delete? And how long is it going to take me to get his machine working again?” Luckily he called me before he got Delete Button happy and hadn’t deleted anything crucial.

Anyhoo…as for Italy? No, never been. BUT…if AG can finally bring Porgie to heel…then it’s gonna be the place where I have my final glory…Firecrotch Woman! Woo-hoo! Get that Porgie in line, AG! I’m not gettin’ any younger ya know! I’m already going to be the world’s oldest Firecrotch newbie!

26 Jennifer Aniston Wins High Times Award

The suspense is over, stoners. You can finally exhale. The High Times Stony Awards were handed out in NYC Tuesday night, and Jennifer Aniston — who was a no-show — won top honors for her doobie-ous role (yuk-yuk) in Friends With Money.

Mary-Louise Parker took home the gilded spliff for her role as a pot brownie-dealing soccer mom in Weeds, and Saturday Night Live’s Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell won for their chronic lullaby “Lazy Sunday.”

Adrianne Curry and Chris Knight won for My Fair Brady, although we’re not sure why because the 25-year age difference creeped us out too much to tune in.

Something to write home about!

Uh oh… I may have to buy EW. They showed the Brad and Cate cover and man, BP looked good in that light blue shirt. Woof!

I understand what you mean but i do believe children have power on those who truely love them. I dont think if world leaders truely loved children we will end up with so many conflicts, invasions, occuparions, bombardments, etc. They wouldn’t send their kids to fight in illegitimate wars or as suicide bombers. My point is a person who truely love children will endure wonders, will change completely for them and will not mind to sacrifice anything and everything for them. That’s why you will find so many people changed into better after they became parents.

…Blanchett does well in her role, even though she is near comatose for long stretches. Pitt overdoes the grimaces, clenched smiles, and pounding fists. His anguish is showy. Pitt is not your typical Hollywood star: He takes chances by appearing in nonstandard fare such as “Twelve Monkeys” and this film. But he also seems in over his head.

Alexanderina @ 10/26/2006 at 9:16 pm

278 | COLD HARD MATH | - I agree CHM, I was glad that it won best picture as well. BTW: Are you watching the game?

Indie - I like smart people like you! Expressing opinions and ideas in a respecful manner requires intelligence, and your argue your point of view quite effectively.

African Girl - I’m never one to shy away from an argument, but I just think that even if we tried we would not change each other mind. When it gets to that point, there is a fundamental difference and that’s when I have to agree to disagree.

On the Oprah issue, I’ll say this: She annoys me most of the time too. She can be superficial and excessive, I agree. I’m not a fan of let’s hang everything out there like she does. No matter how much she bugs me, here’s why I still respect her: She overcame terrible things in a life she did not ask for. She took responsibilities for her actions and choices in life. If she goes to Africa to make herself feel good, then so be it. She has credibility because she was once one of these children. And I’ll say finally, she’s teaming up with the Gates foundation to set up education for them.

As for Angelina, I just think she cheapens and dumbs down the issue too much. I find it offensive when I here statement like she’s putting Africa on the map. I’ll stop there and leave it alone.

‘Babel’ is a fascinating, intricate puzzle
Inarritu succeeds in creating a compelling, unnerving sense of dislocation
REVIEW
By John Hartl
Film critic
MSNBC
Updated: 8:55 p.m. PT Oct 25, 2006
Never one to tell a straightforward story straightforwardly, the Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (“21 Grams,” “Amores Perros”) thrives on complications and fractured narratives. His third feature, “Babel,” offers plenty more of the same.
Working once again with screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga (who also wrote “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada”), Inarritu has constructed an intricate puzzle movie that takes some wild leaps off the diving board and mostly justifies the gamble. If the experiment goes on too long (143 minutes), and if one of the stories is less than compelling, “Babel” still has many glorious touches.
Chief among them is the way two stories intersect in Morocco. A pair of American tourists (Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett) are quarreling about why they’ve chosen to visit the country and leave their children to their Hispanic housekeeper. Unknown to them, she’s taken the kids from San Diego to Mexico to celebrate her son’s wedding.
Meanwhile, two young Moroccan goatherders are trying out their new gun in a sparsely populated desert area. One takes aim at the Americans’ tourist bus, not meaning to do much more than establish the gun’s range, but the bullet shatters a window and hits Blanchett, and in no time the incident has set off a terrorist alert.
Meanwhile, back in Tokyo (yes, that’s quite a leap, and it’s not one of the more welcome ones), a deaf-mute teenager (Rinko Kikuchi) is dealing with her mother’s suicide and her father’s apparent estrangement from her. She acts out her trauma by stripping for strangers and teasing a boy who seems to reject her.
As it turns out, there is a direct connection between the folks in Japan and the ones in Morocco, but too many coincidences create a strain on the storyline. Also too much is the housekeeper’s desperate border crossing. How much trouble can one family attract in one weekend? This one seems downright disaster-prone.
Nevertheless, Inarritu does succeed in creating a compelling and unnerving sense of dislocation, by presenting several points of view, and several perceptions of the consequences, almost simultaneously. Essential to this effect are the contributions of composer Gustavo Santaolalla and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (reunited after their work on “Brokeback Mountain”).
The privileged tourists see one kind of crisis; the Moroccans see quite another. The tourist may lose his wife and children; the goatherd family and the housekeeper may lose everything. Class, race, religion and income make all the difference in how their worlds, separate yet the same, are perceived. Acting on their own interpretation of the situation, officials immediately interpret the accident as part of a conspiracy.
“When Worlds Collide” might have been a more appropriate title for “Babel,” which is especially effective in blending well-known actors with unknowns. Pitt and Blanchette, both deglamourized, are never really the stars.
Neither is Gael Garcia Bernal, who has a key role as the housekeeper’s impatient nephew in the Mexican sequence, or Kikuchi, a 24-year-old actress who successfully impersonates a character who’s nearly a decade younger. They’re all supporting players in a story that’s much bigger and more complicated than any of them

“to put africa on the map” –i think you tried to read into it too much.
i think the most important thing is to look at her intent. she means well and she is sincere. so with that, i respect her tremendously.

Ben 281,
Whoa Buddy/Missy. You just lay off my Angie… You have no idea whatever horror Angie had to overcome in her liftetime tool, as did your supposed/questionable heroine Okra… Nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors.

Thank you for your input though, Goodnight and Good luck with that hate, buddy.

281 | ben | as intellegent as u claim to be, u still had to put down someone else to make yourself seem better…. Did u ever hear her say she’s putting Africa on the map…. Whatever!!!!

I don’t hate. It takes too much energy and it would only effect me. You obviously did not get my point, and I don’t care to explain it to you. No need for your thanks and I’m not your buddy.

BCBG - If you think she’s sincere, then she’s well derserving of your respect.

I’m done. Whatever is not an argument. I’m not better at all, I’m simply expressing my point without personal insult to you. Before the mud starts slinging, I’ll just retire.

I don’t understand what you mean by “cheapens and dumb down the issue”, but to me, AJ has shown a good understanding of some of the problems she is dealing with in her charity causes. One of them being the problems with refugees in the world. (I have read as many as I could of her interviews or writings about the matter). She understands that emigration is not the solution, because not many countries are open to them. The only solution would be to teach them a skill, stablize the region they came from, and try to repatriate them.
Another proof of how she really graps the issues, is the way she uses adoptions. To her, adoption is not just to help one kid. The goal is to raise that kid well, so one day he/she will be able to go back to his/her native country to help the people there. Indie said it really well in her post above.
So I think to dismiss her as cheap and dumb, is showing a narrow mind. I think AJ is very intelligent, but when she goes on tv, she just doesn’t want people to think she is talking over their head. Oprah is very smart and business savvy. She also knows how to address her audience, but to say she knows more of the world problems, I disagree.

As for Angelina, I just think she cheapens and dumbs down the issue too much. I find it offensive when I here statement like she’s putting Africa on the map. I’ll stop there and leave it alone.

Ben, I wonder if “she’s putting Africa on the map” statement refer to Oprah, What did you feel?

# 281 Ben

I read all your post and they are very intelligent. You are as well very respectful of the opinions of others. I do agree as well with AG(?) about how she turned away with Oprah, clearly the visit to Africa became a self-serving mission. Many celebrities are susceptible to that deliberate or otherwise. But i do have to disagree with your comment on AJ, while I’m a fan of her, my refute has nothing to do with it, to say she cheapens and dumbs the issue is trivializing. I believe she has done many wonderful things for the refugees, understanding their flight. In fact, if I’m not mistaken (in UN site) she mentioned about these people that however life is hard for them are very smart and knew how to take care of themselves and that’s what inspires her. Her message is clear, if these refugees can get back to their lands, if appropriate attention and help is given, they can rebuild their lives. I sometimes wonder how they can call all of these PR stunts for her. Many may have lost it along the way, but in my opinion, the media attention goes hand in hand with her being a celebrity and more popular ever since she and BP became a family. You cannot stop media to stop intruding, it’s like fighting against the wave of the ocean, but you can control it. However, some people perceived it otherwise, but it’s okay because that’s their opinion of her and BP. What is just sad is there are people trying just too hard at times to dismiss their many efforts to help. Now, that is trivializing. I like best what Brad said, the celebrities ability to help will all come down to credibility and consistency. I have yet to hear that AJ/BP have back away from their commitment to help, the forming of their foundation cemented that commitment to help in a long-term basis. By the way, she never said she put africa in the map. How amusing it is as well, that many celebrities can’t stay away mentioning their name or have an opinion of them just to get talk about. Now that is self-serving at the expense of the others and a real shame.

I meant “turned away from Oprah”

Personally, I agree with Ben. Oprah has more credibility in this area than Angelina does. And, for the record, Oprah has been in Africa, amongst the poor.

I don’t think Ben is saying that what AJ is doing is bad, I think he’s saying that more people would choose to accept what Oprah says/does than AJ.

Look at these latest talks with the UN. Angelina points a finger at the western world and makes statements that she really doesn’t know what she is talking about. Oprah, brings the attention to the problem, but does not point accusatory fingers.

297 | Sam

I think you’ve got it wrong. More people might accept what Oprah says/does but AJ has never and never does look for acknowledgment by those sitting on the sidelines making judgements. The people who know who her , the people who have worked with her on her UN mission trips, have nothing but positive opinions about her dedication to the cause and do take her seriously, even if the American public wants to wave of her work as a mere PR stunt.

As far you saying that Oprah has been to Africa, and has been amongst the poor. Well….AJ has been to over 20 poverty ridden countries and has not only donated her fame and money but also her time to the people living in these countries. I want to repeat, she’s been to 20 countries in the span of 6 years. She’s been assigned as UNCHR ambassador for over 6 years now. She’s visted Darfur, Ethopia, the Congo, and many other countries.

She didn’t take a quick tour of these places, she’s lived with these people in their camps. She’s has LIVED with these people to see their lives and has written about them in her book.

Angelina’s latest statement was accurate. She did not excuse herself from what you call “accusatory ” comments. She knows what she is talking about because people like Kofi Annan, Colin Powell, Dr. Jeffery Sachs, and even Oprah (who interviewed her) take her seriously and her work.

And most importantly, the people who she is helping and has helped take her seriously, and they, unlike us can’t see any differences between Oprah or Angelina.

Ben,

I just think it’s kind of starnge to accuse Jolie of cheapening and dumbing down, when she’s doing the same as Oprah or even Bono for that matter. A lot of the issues going on in Africa are really complex and it behooves anyone who becomes interested in the plight to investigate what’s going on and how they personally can help. The celebrities do no more, IMHO, than shine a light on the issue. I feel that’s all Angelina is doing and I’m happy about that.
When she and Pitt decided to create their family they did it based on their own values. I don’t see them out there forcing anyone else to adopt in the same manner, or saying they are better people because the have adopted in such a way. Other people say this, but I haven’t heard them do so, nor do I feel they are implying it. We come here an see pictures taken of them by paparrazi and make comment, but if I chose not to exist in this virtual world, well then, I wouldn’t know much about them. Therefore, if you’re here, it’s by choice, and if it’s a choice then you are forcing their agenda onto yourself and not vice versa.
I’m at the point where I really don’t know what is doing good to some people. Anytime some one makes an attempt it’s criticized. You were just giving your opinion Ben and you have that right, so please don’t feel like I”m attacking you, it’s just that after reading your comments, I’m kind of interested in knowing, what is doing good. Nothing’s perfect, there are definitely flaws within the actions of Jolie/Pitt but what should we do? I think everyone here really like Jolie/Pitt because they at least try and that feels good. I want to learn how to try harder myself.

That is an immature response. And, for the record, I am not an AJ hater. I just happen to agree with Ben (also, for the record, I am not Ben). I admire AJ for her work with the UN, but I don’t think she has great credibility with her personal life. Yes, she did have a rough childhood (I’m guessing here) but she still grew up wealthier than most of us. Oprah, on the other hand, started out extremely poor, abused, etc. and used her resources to better herself so much as to become one of the most powerful women today. That’s a big difference.

Sam:

Yes, Angelina did have questionable behavior in the past. But she has CHANGED for the better. You have to her credit. I do not believe she grew up wealthier than many of us. Remember her father left the family when Angie was probably 1 or 2. She was mostly raised by her mother. She said when she was in hight school, she bought 2nd hand clothes and was ridiculed by her school mates. . She is gaining creditbility. I remember she was photographed with C Rice and Clinton. Even Powell spode well of her. I also read she could get things done in Congress. She and Bono are the 2 that are well respected in Capitol Hill. Time called it the JONO efeect.

At work, many of my colleagues have respect for Angelina. These are the people who are professional. It’s those pro-Aniston people who thought otherwise.

As for Oprah, I’ve heard of good things about her. But if I have to vote. I will definitely give my vote to Jolie.

i mean Time magazine
i mean JONO effect

Re: Guli and African Girl on Oprah and hi to Guli,
ITA, could not have said it better.
Re #48 African Girl
“I truly believe that Education is the first step. We’ve these uneducated men ruling……doing things they know nothing about. There is nothing as dangerous as an illiterate with power and to see just how dangerous”
I agree with you on this too, but the militia is a powerful entity in most African, southeast Asian and some near eastern countries and that is how Idi Amin got into power. With a rudimentary education, he was clearly a thug. The people of Uganda never had a chance. I have lived in Kampala for a short time and had the opportunity to talk to the everyday person. Kampala, the Capital of Uganda, has nine Univerisities and Uganda as a whole has a 52% literacy rate (stat from 1990). This is very good for a third world country considering there are tribes and villages that are inaccessible by most average means. The problem in Uganda which is all that I can speak about from first hand experience is that no matter how much education a local has, they cannot get a job. Uganda is considered one of the most progressive African countries. The influx of Europeans, especially the British, Pakistanis, Indians and Japanese establishing businesses is quite noticeable but they will not hire the locals. They bring in people to work for their companies from their respective countries. I stayed in a private home where the inhabitants had a full time cook, named Beatrice. Beatrice had a degree in hotel management but told me she no one would hire her because she was a Ugandan. This appeared to be the norm when I started talking to other locals. President Museveni has a bachelor of arts degree in Economics andPolitical Science from the University of Dar es Sadaam, which is quite respectable and he is doing alot to provide education for all children, however when I visited a school, there were 110 children in one regular sized classroom and one teacher, ages ranged from 7 to 15 years. One has to wonder how a student learns under those circumstances…there are no books, the school cannot afford them. Everything is done off the chalkboard and posters. Uganda teaches about AIDS starting at five years old in this particular school and they are actually “tested” on the subject matter.
Something must be working when you note that there nine universities in Kampala alone. The problem is the lack of jobs even for the educated and the lack of support to hire the locals from the big businesses with origins outside Uganda. President Museveni, although educated himself is caught in the middle.

#281 Ben

I went back to p 1 to read all your posts. When Aniston was mentioned by some fellow poster, you said you refused to discuss about her.
Why are you bringing Angie in at the last paragraph of your post?
Is this hypocritical???

Well, I tell you that. Jennifer never gives back to society. She is selfish. She is a fraud. She is the “me me me” person. She does not take responsibility. She blamed her marriage failure on other people.

This movie looks GOOD. Hope Brad does win an Oscar…..then Jen can throw another pity party for herself because she is a lousy actress that will never be deserving of true recognition for her acting. She sucks!

bunch of loonies @ 10/27/2006 at 12:47 am

Who was it who said that everything X does is related to divorce and marriage, etc…ever since the break up movie..it’s true! The people on SNL should do a skit on it along with the boo-hooing on oprah bit too.

Sam :

You cant blame us for suspecting both you and Ben. Was Ben right in bringing out Angie when he (Ben) told us to leave Aniston out?
Is this fair?

I will not miss Babel for anything. But where I live I got to wait until Nov. 10 for em to see it. Love Brad & Love Angie

Why do Oprah and Jolie have to be pit against each other? So what, you have to qualify now in order to help others or to be deemed more worthy of helping others? I’m tired of all this. These two women aren’t competing so stop trying to make them.

That said, Ben, I read your response to AG and it was really enlightening. We could be talking about anything else. What a celebrity is wearing, who a celebrity is dating, but we are discussing the past, present and possible future of Africa and what should and shouldn’t be done to help. To me this is the whole point of Jolie/Pitt. Not that they are saving the world, but that there are bigger issues out there that should be talked about. It’s the reason I come to these boards because I am interested in learning more about how I can effectively help in this world. I was done with the Paris Hilton’s of the world and every other self-centered body who I was supposed to worship because they are famous. I don’t feel I have to worship Pitt or Jolie, but I am inspired and what’s wrong with that? So they aren’t perfect, who cares. Now when I read a celebrity blog the conversation gets a bit deeper and I’m glad of it.

Question: To Ben, what should be done to help in your opinion?

313
I’m not answering for Ben, but in my opinion, Angie has to do with this conversation…(although I did not go back to the first page to read how it all got started), but this specific discussion (Africa) and Aniston does not. I don’t understand why “x” is even mentioned in these topics. It’s not like she has anything to do with AJ going to Africa or Oprah for that matter. So, tell me, why is she mentioned? But, if the reason was good, then, no it isn’t fair

I knew Oprah was rich and powerful but I lost respect on her after biasly siding with Maniston. and don’t compare Oprah and Angie. How old is Oprah and how old is Angie.? Oprah was only a few years younger than her mother.

Brad’s teeth look bad in this picture. Are they made up to look like that? or does he need a better dental plan?

I found it a bit ridiculous , when celebrity try to do some good deed, they were bash and criticized just like the recent adoption of. Madonna. I think most people would prefer celebrities just doing nothing other than sitting in the salon making their hair, tanning, shopping, party, talking about boob, talking about their lovelife. it seem shallow hollywood life was much prefer.

I agree. I remember watching VH1 and it was another one of those lifestyles of the rich and shameless shows, where Paris Hilton was being lauded for purchase a $5,000 outfit for her damn dog and I just had to turn the TV off. I’m glad things have changed. Now all I want to do is find out how to be a part of it. I don’t care if they aren’t perfect people, I don’t require anyone to be perfect for me to like things they do. I’m inspired by the action and I’m for it.

Oprah, brings the attention to the problem, but does not point accusatory fingers.

IMO her not taking a stand is a negative. If she (a billionaire ) can’t stand up and fight than who can.

African Girl - I’m never one to shy away from an argument, but I just think that even if we tried we would not change each other mind. When it gets to that point, there is a fundamental difference and that’s when I have to agree to disagree.

I have no problem with this. We’ll just agree to disagree however; I want to touch on a few points from your post…

You wrote “She overcame terrible things in a life she did not ask for. She took responsibilities for her actions and choices in life.”…..Can’t this also be said for AJ? The reason I admire her is because of the things you mentioned above.

You also wrote “If she goes to Africa to make herself feel good, then so be it.” And with this statement, I finally understood what bugs me about Oprah….Empathy or should I say the lack of there of. Oprah does not seem to empathize with these people. She helps because she understands that someone of her status should be helping others (a fact that I am quiet glad for) but her lack of empathy automatically shifts the focus from those she’s helping to her…so it not about “Oprah helping THE POOR”, it is “OPRAH helping the poor”.

You wrote “She has credibility because she was once one of these children” this part of your post actually shows how far apart on the totem pole we are because I sincerely believe Oprah can’t empathize because she was once “one of these children” . I’ve followed Oprah for almost twenty years now and it’s obvious that the one thing she’d like to forget is the fact that she was not born with the silver spoon she’s got in her mouth today. Oh, she mentions her past sometimes but only in the context of trying to get high ratings for her show, which brings us back to the African trip and how she manipulated the situation in hopes of making her show #1.
Finally, you wrote “As for Angelina, I just think she cheapens and dumbs down the issue too much. I find it offensive when I here statement like she’s putting Africa on the map. I’ll stop there and leave it alone.”
I don’t understand what you mean by cheapen but the dumbing down part….well, maybe she gets that the average person is not Harvard or Yale educated. Since it’s her job as a UN ambassador to make people understand the issue at hand, it will be pointless, if she sat there spouting things that would go over their heads. Now the part about putting Africa on the map, Yeah, you are right, it is offensive, I find it offensive and I’m sure AJ will also find it offensive because she in not the one putting statements like that out there.

I hate X’s fans, they don’t know ANYthing about the truth, they live with Huvane Goggles on and don’t read any articles that aren’t in the tabloids
They don’t ever cite facts with their rants. I don’t go to X threads even to read them anymore because I have a short temper and feel obliged to post and correct them. But in the past, (like up till Tuesday) I have. They use the word classy and nice person a lot , like they ever met her. they never quote anything from a real publication that says anything about her talent or temprament, that she herself isn’t being interviewed. What do the critics say about her? What do her peers say in respect to her disposition (not her friends) and talent? I would’ve like to see that on her threads but I never did.

There, my daily rant in an old thread. Cathartic.

With these last words - I’ll stop posting on this isse.

For those of you who feel the needs to mock me for: “Having
the need to be profound,” I say this: At the very least, I’m
trying to get a better understanding of the cause you claim
you admire and love AJ for.

“Pretending to be an intellectual” I don’t have to pretend
anything, I’m on this board looking at pretty pictures and
talking about a celebrity.

Sam: You capture the essence of my view of Oprah. Continue
to keep it clean.

As for “being from the dark side and posting on JA post” I’ll
state once and for all on the record, I’ve never posted anything
on her. I find her quite silly and the most you can say of her is
– she’s a wounded bird. At least with AJ I can talk about her in
a broader context. So, if I had to choose between the two, it
would choose Jolie.

I’ve said specifically that I think she’s a smart cookie. Shane –
your post laid out for me the most persuasive argument as to
the reason you think she’s sincere. I’m still not convinced by
your assertion that it’s the press’ fault, which is partly true. By
my statement regarding the cheapening and dumbing down of
the issue, I meant the following: Her personal life and the
cause she champions are blurred. People hear her message,
but they walk away with mostly with her personal issues. You
raised a valid point in the fact that she can’t control the media.
Let’s me give you concrete example of her manipulation of
them. She’s pregnant and needs to make an announcement,
what does she do? She goes to Haiti on a HUMANATARIAN
MISSION and an aid worker confirmed the news via people
magazine with lovely pictures. Again, I have never said she was
not smart. That’s an extremely clever way to divert attention
from the obvious. It’s great that all her fans know where Haiti
is, but in the end all everyone remember is: She’s pregnant,
the most beautiful baby ever is coming – and beautiful she is
indeed – the most anticipated birth since Jesus Christ. Where
does that leave the cause? Furthermore, she goes into hiding
in a country where is being shielded from the media. In what
western country would a celebrity be allowed to use
government official in other to obstruct freedom of the press?
Who is she really helping? I was strucked by one thing you
said. “Credibility will come in due time”, and I’ll promise to keep
an

Oops, my last comment got cut off. Here it is:

and I’ll promise to keep an open mind until then.

Sorry guys and gals, I yet have to see a movie where Brad Pitt acts in a natural way…
I mean, for instance, in 7 years in Tibet his German accent was horrible!

I saw Babel tonight and understand why the director would want a BIG name for his movie titles, but come on, Gael, Blanchett would have been enough to get people in to see the movie…

I recommend the movie if you want a story that will make you think about the crazy world we live in…

Peace!

Juan
