Babel Review

Caught a screening of Babel last night. How did Brad Pitt measure up? Even ex Gwyneth Paltrow told NYDN that he’ll take home an Oscar: “It’s the best performance Brad’s ever given. [Babel] makes you want to take good care of your children.” Here’s how it went down…

3 different countries. 4 groups of people. Lives forever changed. A man in Morocco is sold a rifle that he gives to his two sons to protect their goats from jackals. While practicing their shooting, the younger son accidentally shoots an American woman, (Cate Blanchett) who is vacationing with her husband (Brad Pitt) aboard a tour bus. The movie establishes the characters that are further connected to the American couple, the children who are with their Mexican nanny back in the States and the original owner of the rifle, a Japanese businessman whose daughter is deaf-mute.

In the course of a few difficult days, these people will find themselves lost but ultimately discover that their bonds with their families are what finally help them rediscover what they have lost. Although lengthier than most feature films, Babel is not a slow film, going back and forth between the characters, never leaving one hanging. Furthermore, director Alejandro González Iñárritu of 21 Grams, Amores Perros, is able to capture the true essence of these countries with a soundtrack that is a myriad of trans-continental compositions and the issues that people there deal with and how audience members can relate.

Caution: Not for the light-hearted. This film will touch upon issues that are very much alive in our society today. So if you liked Syriana and/or Crash, then chances are Babel is a must-see film for you.

Babel opens in theaters in NY/LA tomorrow, Oct. 27, and Nov. 10 everywhere else.

Batter’s up! OMGBlog has Mario Lopez playing baseball with his pants down low and his shirt hanging off his waist… Where are these screen captures from? Anyone know?

Mario Lopez and Dallas Cowboys’ legend Emmitt Smith were the top two vote-getters revealed during last night’s results show. They are one of four couples left in the Dancing with the Stars competition. Will Mario score a home-run and make it all the way?

With these last words - I’ll stop posting on this isse.

For those of you who feel the needs to mock me for: “Having
the need to be profound,” I say this: At the very least, I’m
trying to get a better understanding of the cause you claim
you admire and love AJ for.

“Pretending to be an intellectual” I don’t have to pretend
anything, I’m on this board looking at pretty pictures and
talking about a celebrity.

Sam: You capture the essence of my view of Oprah. Continue
to keep it clean.

As for “being from the dark side and posting on JA post” I’ll
state once and for all on the record, I’ve never posted anything
on her. I find her quite silly and the most you can say of her is
– she’s a wounded bird. At least with AJ I can talk about her in
a broader context. So, if I had to choose between the two, it
would choose Jolie.

I’ve said specifically that I think she’s a smart cookie. Shane –
your post laid out for me the most persuasive argument as to
the reason you think she’s sincere. I’m still not convinced by
your assertion that it’s the press’ fault, which is partly true. By
my statement regarding the cheapening and dumbing down of
the issue, I meant the following: Her personal life and the
cause she champions are blurred. People hear her message,
but they walk away with mostly with her personal issues. You
raised a valid point in the fact that she can’t control the media.
Let’s me give you concrete example of her manipulation of
them. She’s pregnant and needs to make an announcement,
what does she do? She goes to Haiti on a HUMANATARIAN
MISSION and an aid worker confirmed the news via people
magazine with lovely pictures. Again, I have never said she was
not smart. That’s an extremely clever way to divert attention
from the obvious. It’s great that all her fans know where Haiti
is, but in the end all everyone remember is: She’s pregnant,
the most beautiful baby ever is coming – and beautiful she is
indeed – the most anticipated birth since Jesus Christ. Where
does that leave the cause? Furthermore, she goes into hiding
in a country where is being shielded from the media. In what
western country would a celebrity be allowed to use
government official in other to obstruct freedom of the press?
Who is she really helping? I was strucked by one thing you
said. “Credibility will come in due time”, and I’ll promise to keep
an

Oops, my last comment got cut off. Here it is:

and I’ll promise to keep an open mind until then.

Sorry guys and gals, I yet have to see a movie where Brad Pitt acts in a natural way…
I mean, for instance, in 7 years in Tibet his German accent was horrible!

I saw Babel tonight and understand why the director would want a BIG name for his movie titles, but come on, Gael, Blanchett would have been enough to get people in to see the movie…

I recommend the movie if you want a story that will make you think about the crazy world we live in…

Peace!

Juan
