Brad Pitt struts his stuff on the cover of December’s Vanity Fair — and TMZ has learned that no one was more surprised to see the steamy cover on stands than Brad himself.
A source close to Pitt tells TMZ that Brad shot the photos, taken by artist Robert Wilson, in September 2005, but didn’t have any idea at the time — or anytime since — that they would be used for the cover of VF. Pitt had agreed to be in Wilson’s avant-garde video art project last year, and signed a legal release at the time for the still and video images taken in the shoot. But until the Vanity Fair cover emerged this week, Pitt didn’t know that he would be the magazine’s coverboy.
TMZ has also learned that Sacha Baron Cohen, star of the upcoming film “Borat,” was slated to be on the December cover, but Cohen’s reps were told that Vanity Fair had decided to produce a special “Art Issue” for December instead, and that he was being pulled as the cover subject. It may be that steadily under-performing series of cover subjects this year — with the exception of Suri Cruise in October’s issue — may have led Vanity Fair’s editors to substitute Pitt for Cohen. Indeed, Pitt and Jennifer Aniston have fronted some of Vanity Fair’s best-selling issues.
Pitt’s lawyers are said to be weighing their legal options. His rep gave the following statement to TMZ: “We are very disappointed that Vanity Fair has chosen to put an unauthorized cover on their magazine. It seriously makes me question their integrity and motives.”
A rep for Vanity Fair tells TMZ: “Brad Pitt posed for a Robert Wilson video portrait, and in the photo release (signed by Pitt), agreed to allow Wilson to use the portrait or any images from that sitting in connection with any publicity on Wilson’s video project. Vanity Fair decided to do a story on Wilson’s video portraits and obtained rights to the entire collection of photographs from those sittings, which included Pitt’s.”

Reps for Vanity Fair tell TMZ, “In a letter dated October 5, 2006, and sent to Pitt care of Brillstein-Grey [Pitt's managers], Wilson informed Pitt that a still image from his portrait was going to be featured in the December art issue of Vanity Fair.” A source says that Pitt never saw the letter.

Okay…I’m a little confused, is this a new VF with BP or an old one being reissued and if it is, WHY?!! Stupid VF….they know BP is hot right now (both figuratively and literally speaking of course) and they are not above exploiting the man or at least his image….forgetting they played a hand in trying to mar his reputation. Stupid people…magazine…whatever.

I’m sorry, but I don’t believe Brad Pitt operates like that. He’s a powerful man, and I’m extremely doubtful he’d grace the cover of a major magazine without giving them permission to put him there. I don’t believe he lives in the past about that interview, and I don’t believe he’s baned himself from doing business with them because of it. I have yet to read, hear or see one time where Brad has said he won’t work with VF, and until then, I’m not inclined to believe he’s harboring no ill will with anyone there to the point of giving them that kind of power over him, and that’s would it would be. I could never imagine him allowing anyone to stop him from moving freely as it pertains to his career, and magazines are part of that.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that Liz Smith should pick her battles more carefully? I mean, in all of the years BP has been in the public eye, the most we have seen of him is his chest and his butt-never the full monty(although there are sites out there that have pics of that, so I’ve heard). Meanwhile, the Library of Congress has Madonna’s Sex Book, which depicted simulated sex acts, hinging on deviance, the Justify My Love video, the Eroticia album, and the Britney/Christina makeout session on an MTV awards show. But the issue of a wet Brad in wet boxers is a rallying cry for Liz’s embracing feminism or sexist double standards? PLEASE!

there was no interview. the folks at Vanity Fair cooked up this whole art issue as an excuse to get braddy on the cover of their rag. the article inside is supposed to be about the artist who did the video. brad was one of his subjects and they took a still from the vid and used it as their cover. they’re just trying to make money off his image.

Ok, if TMZ is to be believed, I stand corrected only regarding permission being granted, but as far as the rest, it stands. I do not believe Brad is walking around with that d@mn VF interview stuffed in his wallet to be pulled out and screamed at from time to time. For him to do that would mean he still was living in the past, and according to Brad Pitt, he doesn’t live in the past.

Totally agree, I would of have been knocked when I was walking down the aisle and had at least 5 kids by now. JA must have been nuts. Her career is so over, I saw TBU last night (my hubby rented it), I did not laugh or smile once, it was so depressing.
You would hope the rags have figured out that it is BP who sells the mags. People bought the VF with X on the cover to see what was said about BP. The days of hert hair selling a mag off the shelves are over. She is over and aging quickly. BTW did she have implant on her hair line, it looked weird in TBU during the nude scene.
