Angelina Jolie’s Signature Smile

Angelina Jolie spoke to the media in Mumbai yesterday during a press conference to talk about her shooting experience in India for A Mighty Heart. She clarified that she and Brad Pitt have no plans to adopt an Indian baby. Read the full article after the jump but here what Angelina said on the importance of this film: “We need to tell the story of Daniel Pearl and the reason we are making this film is because it’s very important to have a dialogue between the two cultures. I have the blessings of Daniel Pearl’s family to play this role.”

UPDATE :: Added more pictures of Angelina Jolie in sandalas and carrying a brown leather bag on the set of A Mighty Heart from earlier today. Angie was spotted leaving the Anjuman-e-Islam school in Mumbai, India.

Angelina Scorches Indian Baby Rumors

It was an unusual start to an eagerly awaited press conference. Hollywood diva Angelina Jolie, who evidently kept her role as ambassador in mind at her first encounter with the Indian press on Wednesday evening, began with a confession.

“We have been avoiding the press since we landed in India, but the only reason was that we had a lot of work to do,”she said.

Jolie arrived at the conference in a white linen ensemble. Flanked by co-stars of the film, A Mighty Heart, her humble confession was followed with a terse rider: please ask questions pertaining to the film only.

The only personal query she allowed was one that enabled her to clear the air about rumours of her adopting again. No, Brangelina won’t be adding an Indian baby to their brood after all.

The evening began with the usual banter between her management team and the press. The ’screening’ of journalists took an inordinately long time, with some being asked to stay out of the conference.

For those who did eventually make it to the Princess room at the Taj, there was disappointment in store: producer Brad Pitt had decided to stay away. Was it to mind the babies? No one knows.

The actress insisted that A Mighty Heart was not about terrorism. “We need to tell the story of Daniel Pearl, and the reason we are making this film is because it is very important to have a dialogue between two cultures,”she said. “I had the blessings of Daniel Pearl’s family to play this role.”

When asked if Marianne Pearl was the most difficult character she had played in her career, the actress replied, “When you are in the middle of making a film, you always think that way.

Playing her role is certainly challenging for me, as I have to make the world understand this woman and her family.”
Jolie said that though she knew Marianne personally, she had never met anybody who had faced this kind of trauma.

“She has every reason to be embittered and angry about what happened to her husband and her, but she is very positive and has nothing against Pakistan,”she declared. Did Marianne visit the shooting or want to see rushes of the film? “She is not interested,”replied Jolie.

“She has been travelling around the world, writing on women’s issues.”

Indian actor Irrfan said that he had expected to get intimidated by the star but she went out of her way to make him comfortable.

“She has a very strong personality and it comes across,”said the actor who referred to Jolie as “Angie”during the conference.

And finally, Jolie’s take on Mumbai’s infamous suburban trains. When asked how her much-publicised ride on a local was, she replied straight-faced, “It was fun.”

Here it comes…………The “insult to religion”

Angelina Jolie bodyguards bailed
By Monica Chadha
BBC News, Mumbai

Three bodyguards of Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie have been released on bail in the western Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay).

They have been charged with “insult to religion and threatening to kill” after being involved in a scuffle with parents at a Mumbai school, police say.

Jolie was filming at the Anjuman-i-Islam school at the time.

She is in India to film A Mighty Heart, based on the life of murdered US journalist Daniel Pearl.

‘Upset’

Angry parents accused Jolie’s bodyguards of pushing and insulting them when they came to collect their children from the school on Thursday.

Jolie’s India trip is the subject of intese media interest

“Children were waiting inside for us and, when they opened the gates, those men [bodyguards] pushed our ladies and children. They also said ‘You bloody Indian’. This is just not done,” said parent Mohammed Yusuf Patni.

Mr Patni said parents were upset that the school allowed filming while classes were being held inside.

“There were actors dressed in Pakistani policemen’s uniforms. They were holding guns which scared the children,” he said.

A statement from the film producers said: “We had the full permission and co-operation of the school to film on the premises.

“Unfortunately, our arrival was impeded by the paparazzi waiting at the gates of the school.

“When the gates were opened to allow the parents in to collect their children, the paparazzi rushed into the school causing confusion.”

The lawyer for the bodyguards, Mahesh Jethmalani, told the BBC the bodyguards were released on bail of 25,000 rupees each ($555).

They have been told to report to the police every day for the next seven days.

“They’ve basically been charged with offences related to criminal intimidation,” Mr Jethmalani said.

“These are all cases of your word against mine. Looking at the circumstances I doubt if all these words were uttered.”

Attracting attention

Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt, along with their three children, arrived in Mumbai on Saturday to shoot parts of the film.

Actor Dan Futterman plays Daniel Pearl, who was abducted and murdered in Pakistan in 2002, while Jolie plays the role of his widow, Marianne.

Pitt and Jolie - one of Hollywood’s most famous couples - have had their every move followed by the media since they arrived in India in October.

Pitt has accompanied Jolie as the film is being co-produced by the company he founded along with his ex-wife, actress Jennifer Aniston.

Earlier in the week, Jolie caused a stir when she boarded a crowded local train with Futterman in Mumbai.

A photographer who managed to get into the same compartment said one of her bodyguards had threatened to throw him out of the train if he tried to get too near or take pictures.

ewwwwww she looks like crap!!!! whats with the hair, and she laughs like an airhead!

Did anyone ever find out where Brad went with the 2 older kids? Did they really go anywhere? Did he
**********************

There were 2 stories from the ever reliable India press.

1: Brad went to Rajasthan, India to shoot an ad.
2. Brad went with Maddox & Zahara to the USA.

I really doubt #2, i can’t see Brad taking a kid (much less both) on a 20 hour flight to America & then back to India unless it was a total emergency. So i highly doubt that version. #1 sounds plausible enough. But then there’s always the possibility he didn’t go anywhere & the media just made it up. Unless there are pictures, we’ll never know.

They have been charged with “insult to religion and threatening to kill”

Damn. I hope filming is done this weekend, they (Brad and Angelina) need to get out of India.

Give me a break! @ 11/17/2006 at 7:53 am

Ignore this MA person, she is seeking attention.Don’t give it to her!

Alright, GMABreak!

Ignoring …. it’s a little too early in the morning for his/her doodoo, anyway (at least where I am from).

I reiterate, I hope BAMZS get out of India as soon as possible. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Pitt obviously didn’t leave the country with Maddox and Zahara as we have a new picture of Maddox

who cares!!!! blah blah

GET THE HELL OUT OF THIS COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Angelah, I saw the UCLA tape too! Shocked is just one of words that I felt when I saw it. I mean, the man was tasered a few times but they kept on telling him to “stand up”? It can take up to 15 minutes to recover from ONE shock. Oh I sent you a private message on youtube too!

Stardust, thanks for the updates and I agree w/ everyone else they need to get out ofIndia…they don’t need more pointless drama surrounding them. BTW, did you happen to check out TDS and TCR last night?

Whats normal? Nevermind, dont answer that one. Anyway, his fauxhawk is fine, it’s unique, it’s Maddox, and most important, he’s not your child so don’t worry about it.

I hope you are right. I dont hold anything against ordinary Indians but the press over there is outrageous. hopefully they will be leaving very soon.

From Shy: Hello, people…. There is this cool site – http://www.aintitcool.com/ And as you know – often movies are getting test screenings by ordinary people. Months before the premiere. People are watching it (often undone movies: like… music, special effects are not finished) and telling the things they didn’t like, and producers fixing it. So on this site you often can read the opinions of the people that have been at such test screenings. Their reviews. This is such review. I’ll bring later the review to Assassination of Jessy James.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD review
I’ve been itching to see this one for a while. I love real-world spy stuff, and the history of the CIA is particularly rich as the subject matter for a film. Robert De Niro’s proved to be an interesting director in his first time at bat, and I’ve been curious to see what he was going to do as a sophomore film.
Tonight, two spies weighed in on a screening, and they couldn’t be more directly opposed in their reactions. Let’s hear the good news first:

…Just got back from seeing a pretty intense flick THE GOOD SHEPHARD, directed by Robert De Niro with Matt Damon, Anjelina Jolie and about every working character actor in the biz today: DeNiro, Pesci, Crudup, Gambon, Hutton, Hurt, Baldwin, etc. etc. The movie is sensational - like reading a great epic novel but by no means perfect in its current state.

THE PLOT - the film opens with Damon prepping for the Bay of PIgs invasion. Listening to wiretapped tapes, secret photos, etc… all from his suburban home. As he takes the bus to work we see that EVERYTHING in his life is in service to the agency. A small kid asks for change for a dollar - turns out the dollar has secret info on it that his asst. (Jon Turturro) retrieves from an office file. This is whats fun about the movie - while it is very much a history lesson, its played out in a fun cloak-and-dagger style. With people speaking in code, hidden messages in dry cleaning, etc. I’m sure this is all historically accurate but (in a good way) took me back to kids’ secret agent shows with decoder rings and such. From here the movie flashes back to Damon at Yale - being groomed in the Skull and Bones group that nurture future world leaders. He is drafted by Baldwin here for a little info gathering mission against a suspcted Nazi at the school. After passing this test, he meets Hurt then De Niro who ultimately convinces him to join what I believe they call the ‘America First’ (?) program. Around this time he meets a fellow agents’ sister - JOLIE - who literally pins him down at a picnic and does him (kinda hot, very typical Jolie move, I might add). Next thing he knows she’s pregnant and his fellow agent coeces him into marrying her. About a week after getting hitched he gets his first assignment and doesn’t really see her or his son for about 5 years. I’m getting bogged down in information here so let me just say that by the time he gets back from Europe - his allegiance is almost solely completely to ‘his country’ (not his family) and Cuba is becoming a threat.

MY CRITIQUE——————————————-
After adjusting to the rhythm of it, I was in love so let me get my bitching out of the way before the worship begins.

THE BAD: this movie is LONG. Like over 3 hours long. And you can definitely feel it in places. Which is a strange problem considering that it is so jam packed with informatoin and human drama that I was still processing stuff when the next scene would come on. Which brings me to my next *****. The movie can be a bit confusing at times. Although if you wait paiently, things are revealed that explain a lot and they end up blowing your mind. IF YOU WAIT. In the meantime though, you may find yourself playing catch up with the plot/reversals/double crosses/tests and general intrigue that goes on. My buddy and I just spent the last hour eating donuts and hashing through only like half of it.
But the movie could very well be a masterpiece and here is why…

THE GOOD: this is an intense, fascinating, pulsating and passionate depiction of a chapter of American History that even if we think we know somewhat - we really have no idea about. The pleasant surprise here being that De Niro manages to layer the personal, dysfunctional history of one particular operative throughout the whole birth of the CIA up through to the disaster at Bay of Pigs. All of which rests on the very capable shoulders of one Mr. Matt Damon - whom is turning out to be one of our cinema’s greatest actors. He’s (I think) in just about every single scene of this and turns in a performance that is not only stoic and mature, but observant, wise and conflicted. In a way the whole story is his struggle to keep moral amidst a career which traffics in secrets, lies and distrust. Mark my words - THIS WILL BE DAMON’S NEXT OSCAR NOMINATION. Jolie and Hurt are pretty much the next two leads - with Hurt doing what Hurt does (all I can say) and Jolie proving once again that she is full of surprises. She’s flirty in this, cynical — and even naive which I don’t think is something we’ve seen in her arsenal before. I never think of Jolie as wounded or vulnerable and I think this performance will show people just how big her range is. Its a part that gets to build througout and then e-x-p-l-o-d-e. AGAIN - JOLIE’S NEXT OSCAR NOD.
I think my Jeff summed it up best when he said that IF - and only IF - they clean this up a bit and maybe even trim down some subplots, this movie will be THE GODFATHER in the CIA.
Strong words indeed.

From Shy: And since i’m objective and not like the silly fans of X, who would praise every her dumb movie – i’ll bring the another review, that is not so good. But remember – that this are opinions of ordinary people about unfinished film. Some may like it, some not. I remember there were also test reviews of Departed. And author didn’t like it too much. But look how it ended now. So…

…..And this next spy couldn’t disagree more. Check it out:
I got in to a screening for THE GOOD SHEPHERD. Here’s the REVIEW.

The Good Shepherd
I went to see MI:3 at my local movie theater this past Saturday, and on the way in was handed a flyer to go see “The Good Shepherd”. I had heard about it before, and knew it was Robert DeNiro’s directorial debut, and starred Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie, among others. Naturally, I was excited to get the chance to see it, and even more so when I saw that it isn’t scheduled for release until December 22nd. I was getting to see what is going to be considered a high profile Christmas release more or less in May.

After seeing the film, I understand why they had the screening so far before release. The film needs a lot of work, to put it generously. The plot of the movie includes lots of characters, with lots of recognizable talent, but not much coherence. I had bought Munich earlier in the day, and had watched half of it before going to The Good Shepherd. Munich is heavy on characters and locations, and can be considered confusing at times. It all comes together, however, and builds into one central, meaningful, compelling narrative. Not so with The Good Shepherd.
Matt Damon’s character, Edward Wilson, is shown in the opening scenes as an important member of the CIA who arranges and manages the somewhat disasterous Bay of Pigs invasion in the early 60’s. While they are trying to figure out how it was so unsuccessful (they believe a mole within the agency gave away the drop point for the troops), lengthy flashbacks are shown, portraying a younger version of Wilson as he became involved in the life of spying. Through his connections in his Skull and Bones fraternity (I assume it was a fraternity), he ends up being recommended for some intelligence work in WWII. Before entering the war, however, he knocks up Angelina Jolie, then proceeds to marry her, and then go straight off to war. He comes back six years later, with his kid having grown up without him, and his wife, who was never really close to him to begin with, estranged. Then, along with John Turturro and William Hurt, along with others, he begins the CIA, urged on by Robert DeNiro’s character, who is a U.S. general. From this point, the movie goes back and forth between Damon’s character’s personal life and his life in the CIA.

There are a lot of problems with this movie, so I’m not quite sure where to begin. Let’s begin with the acting. Damon meanders through the movie, never really showing much emotion. Maybe that’s the point of his character, but considering the movie revolves around him, featuring him in practically every scene, he could have been much better. Jolie is actually pretty decent, she shows a range of emotion throughout the film, and even a little bit more of her character could be desired. DeNiro? Couldn’t really tell what the point of his character was besides to fill in plot points and tell Damon what to do a few times. John Turturro is pretty good, and is allowed to really unleash on a Russian during an interrogation scene, which proved to be a high point in the film. Hurt, along with Alec Baldwin, who plays an FBI associate of Damon’s, are also pretty good. Damon’s son, who is represented as 3 different actors, is always a bit off, with the first rendition looking like Damien from the new Omen movie, the 2nd one not really doing much, and the third one just doing a lot of whining. Also, Joe Pesci was on the flyer I got before the movie, however his character was in ONE scene and seemed to serve no purpose whatsoever besides potentially getting Fidel Castro some booby-trapped cigars, which I’m not even sure was Pesci’s doing. Finally, Billy Crudup, fresh off of MI:3, is back in the intelligence world as a British agent.

So the acting wasn’t too bad. In fact, it was the high point. How about the negatives? First, the plot is presented in a non-linear way, starting in the future and going back to the past a number of times, and for much of the movie. Why? There doesn’t seem to be a point to it, the film is basically a 1st person telling of the creation of the CIA and the effect that the intelligence life has on Damon’s character, so why not just start with Damon in college, and then proceed with the story from there? There is no real big payoff to using the flashback set-up, so they should just do away with it.

Also, the movie ran over 3 hours long. It doesn’t need to be that long at all. A half hour could be cut out of it, with it being somewhat redundant in a lot of places. It featured a lot of subplots that never concluded, or that concluded, but didn’t seem to make sense or seem very important. There are a few story lines that are interesting (the founding of the CIA, the interaction between the CIA and the KGB, and Damon’s character’s family life). Those storylines should be focused on, and the movie could greatly benefit from it. The supporting characters are interesting, but they aren’t what the movie is about.

Finally, and perhaps most disappointingly, was that the movie is just plain boringly filmed. There is not one truly inspired shot in the entire film. I was hoping that, as DeNiro has worked the most with Martin Scorcese, there would be at least a touch of Scorcese’s filmmaking ability. I seem to have expected way too much. Also, there aren’t any interesting locations used. Mostly all of the film is set indoors, and the few outdoor shots that are featured are from high angles, only showing so much of the set. No CGI is used at all, and while most people dislike CGI, it’s nice to use in small amounts to create past locations, and that isn’t done here.
Maybe I just had high hopes for the film. With the talent involved, who wouldn’t? Maybe with some good editing this can become a worthwhile, interesting film. Just don’t expect anyone to be clamoring for it to win awards come December when it is released.

Good Mrning, ya’ll!

oh. My. Goodness. Thsi situation in India has gone from bad to worse, but I do feel that once all sides of the story are heard, we will see that at least part of this incident was exaggerated and blown-up out of proportion. I do think there were mistakes made when coordinating this location, but that’s not Angie’s doing.

Anyhoo, at this rate probably the last thing any of you want to do is read another longish post from anyone, but let me just say lula, love your post about how Brad broke out of the perfect “Barbie & Ken” realtionship “complete with Malibu beach house” and and fell for the “wierd girl”. That’s what brought me into this realm of celeb gossip blogging, which I have never been interested in before Brad & Angie. You see, I’m a “wierd girl” myself, haha, and oh, how it does my heart good to see Mr. All-American Brad fall, not only in love, but fall ass-over-tea-kettle gaga over Angie! The way he just unabashedly proclaims, through all his actions, that he is finally free to be who he *really* is because she came into his life…..well, it just gives me hope that *maybe* middle white America has some hope for it yet.

Now, about MAddox’s hair…..please, I can’t believe people make such a big deal over it. My 12 year-old son had a faux hawk from age 8-10, and we even dyed the strip in the middle blue and green over the summer. It’s fun, and it’s healthy for kids to express their creativity. Now, my son no longer has his faux hawk, but he keeps a blonde streak down the center of his brown hair. He loves it. And he’s not out terrorizing the neighborhood…he’s a solid A-B student and growing into a very compassionate human being. As for Ritzy’s comment that Brad obviously has nothing to say about Maddox’s hair, well, ol’ gal….eat your words, because Brad even cur his own mohawk for a few days in Namibia, and I can bet it was some kind of bonding thing with Maddox, for them to “look alike” or something along that line, because, after all, I am sure Brad doesn’t want Maddox to have to go through what he had to in his own life, i.e., marrying the wrong woman, and having to throw off some perceived societal image of himself before he could live life on his own terms. Brad wants to give Maddox a healthy, expressive psyche right from the start. Brad knows all about repression, knows it’s a drag, and he likely doesn’t want his own son to start off life that way. Like somebody else already said, he’s not your kid, so stop putting your own ideas of what is “normal” onto him. Normal = boring.

Thanks Jared & Audrey @ 11/17/2006 at 9:08 am

Shy, thanks for putting them up. I remember readin that first one a long time ago, but never the 2nd one. I had read they still editing so maybe it will be shorter and also the parts that did not work for you may get tweaked too.

Pitt, Khan meet Mumbai police commissioner

MUMBAI, NOV 17 (PTI)
Hollywood star Brad Pitt and actor Irfan Khan today met city Police Commissioner A N Roy to discuss the alleged manhandling of people at a school here during the shooting of the film “A Might Heart” that stars Angelina Jolie.

Pitt, the producer of the movie, and Khan told Roy that Jolie’s bodyguards had not used racial and religious slurs against parents or mediapersons at the school yesterday, police sources said.

Aarti and Kailash Surendranath of the film’s local production group were present during the 20-minute meeting, the sources said.

Three of Jolie’s bodyguards were arrested today on charges of arousing religious passions and causing hurt to parents. They were later released on bail.

The bodyguards had allegedly manhandled 12 people, including two mediapersons, and passed racial remarks outside the Badruddin Tyebji High School in south Mumbai where Jolie was shooting.

To echo my post above, people need to see that their are many ways to express yourself, and there is more to life than the preppy button-down for boys and frilly shi-shi poo-poo dresses for girls.

Great post. I forgot about above and Brad really wnt further than his sons cut because Maddox just had a fauxhawk but Brad had it all shaved but for the middle. I am so happy to rememberd this.

Just giving an update and nothing else

Brad Pitt and a member of the production crew met the commissoner of Mumbai police to sort out the matter. Apparently they stated that there was no such intent. The commissoner has advised him to issue an apology to the people through the media. Not too sure if it is going to be done though

The body guards have to report till the 23rd of this month everyday at the local police station, which means they cannot leave the country as initially planned..
