Brad Pitt denies star couple’s bodyguards ‘racist’(AFP)

NEW DELHI - Hollywood star Brad Pitt denied on Saturday that any of the bodyguards working for him and his partner, fellow actor Angelina Jolie, were racist.

Pitt’s statement came after three of their bodyguards were arrested following a scuffle at an Islamic school in the financial capital of Mumbai, where Jolie was shooting the film ‘A Mighty Heart.’

‘This is an awful, awful misunderstanding. We would never employ anyone who is racist, or who would hurt or push a child,’ Pitt told India’s NDTV television in a damage-limitation interview.

Parents at the school had accused the bodyguards of shouting, ‘You bloody Indians, you bloody Muslims,’ when they came to collect their children after classes.

They also accused the bodyguards of pushing around parents and children and making a gesture miming slitting a throat.

‘This is not what Angelina and I wanted,’ Pitt said.

‘Angelina and I have a multi-racial family, we want them to respect and understand different religions.’

Pitt, who is producing the film in which Jolie is starring about US journalist Daniel Pearl’s abduction and murder by Islamic militants in Pakistan in 2002, had apologised Friday to Mumbai police over the incident.

The three bodyguards have been released on bail each of 25,000 rupees (555 dollars) after being held on accusations of making threats and an ‘insult to religion.’

‘The case appears to be in cold storage now’ unless police decide to pursue the case, Mahesh Jethmalani, a lawyer who represented the bodyguards, told AFP.

The bodyguards — Thomas MacAdam, Robert Dunn and Michael Bret who are all British nationals — were arrested early Friday at a five-star hotel in Mumbai.

In October, one of the couple’s bodyguards was caught on camera by an Indian television crew grabbing a British photographer by the throat and warning him to stay away.

Jolie has also denied that her bodyguards had made racist comments.

‘Let me say this: I would never work with anyone who was derogatory towards another man’s race. My family is of mixed race,’ she said in a statement.

‘It is not surprising that the press involved failed to mention their share of the responsibility in the chaos,’ Jolie added.

The film’s production house said it had permission to film at the premises, but a battery of press photographers rushed in when the school gates were opened, ‘creating confusion.’

In the interview with NDTV, Pitt dismissed rumours that the couple who have three children — two adopted — planned to adopt an Indian baby now.

The rumours surfaced after the pair visited an orphanage in the western city of Pune and distributed toys.

However, Pitt said they might in the future.

‘We are not planning to adopt from India at this point but it’s certainly something we would consider in the future,’ he said.

Hey Vancouver, BC Lizzie also thinks you’re shameful and neglectful for not putting life jackets on your kids. See in September I went to Vancouver, BEAUTIFUL city by the way. My friend and I took the little ferry over to an island that had a giant farmer’s market and art galleries. Not once did I see any children on the ferry wearing life jackets. Now some were tourists but many were locals.

Now when I was in Scotland in search of the Loch Ness Monster, I didn’t see any of the kids on the boats wearing life vests. I guess the Scots and Canadians (at least the ones from Vancouver) have something in common with with Brad & Angie.

Lizzie once again, there are series of pictures showing them on land and then they are just settling down in the boat. We are not going to entertain presumptions again this morning. Have a happy day on the thread everyone!

Barkha: The film Mighty Heart brought two of the Hollywod’s biggest names, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, to India. Everybody was very excited, not surprisingly the paparazzi did not leave them alone for a moment. Was that the problem? Why the film has been overshadowed by a headline of unsavoury kind? The latest controversy being the arrest of three of the bodyguards on the crew and location…allegations of parents in a dominant Muslim school saying that the bodyguards have made a racial slur.

We are, for the first time, in conversation with the producer of the film and one of Hollywood’s biggest names, Brad Pitt, along with one of India’s best known actors Irfan Khan who plays a lead role in the film. This is Brad’s first interview of any kind since he has been in India avoiding all those media hounds and we are hoping it will go beyond this incidence to talk about your entire experience here in India.

Brad: Thank you for taking your time out.

Barkha: Thank you for making time. I can imagine what kind of days it has been for you. Did you ever imagine when you were packing your bags to India that one of your stops would include a visit to the police commissioner’s office?

Brad: No. I did not foresee that. I have to say because it is just completely antithetical of what the film is about. So the turn of events is a bit baffling to us. But you know we are here to answer any allegations and certainly set the record straight because these are not our intentions, nor the intention of the people involved.

Barkha: Let me ask you very directly. The perception is that your cast and crew were shooting here and parents had come to pick up their children. It was peak time when the children were trying to get out and they were also excited to see you, Angelina and other stars. They were probably hemming in trying to get a glimpse. The bodyguards at that time, to try and keep the crowd away, got a little rough and the amount of things they said…”You bloody Indians…you bloody Muslims.”

Brad: Absolutely not true. And you know I have to say that we are horrified by these allegations and you must understand our intention for the story is to focus on a similarity of cultures. It is a story of a journalist who believed in truth and making the world a better place by enlightening each other on a point of view and believe in dialogues, and he was a great lover of culture and the world itself. In the story itself, with the abduction, what occurred was to bring together people from different cultures and religions…you have Muslims, Hindus, agnostics, Buddhists, Christians, all people working together to find this man who happened to be a Jewish, but more importantly a believer in a world, who considered himself a citizen of the world and this is a beautiful story for us.

Barkha: Absolutely

Brad: This is the purpose of telling a story. So having these allegations goes against the purpose of the movie and it is disappointing for us and I would like to now answer that.

Barkha: I’ll get into the film in course of the conversation but you know how bodyguards are. They have a tough time and they get rough sometimes. It is also a different culture, it is also a language they speak. When you say that they did not say these things, is it from the knowledge or faith or instinct or are you willing to vouch that they did not say these things?

Brad: All of that. All that across the board I tell you with all my heart. I understand that for Angelina and me to stand up and tell this story is this idea of embracing our cultures. This idea of acceptance, the idea of openness and dialogue with each other. This idea of tolerance which we believe in with all our heart and if you look at our history what we have been involved with…we will never work with anyone who thinks otherwise. Absolutely not. and this is a horrible misunderstanding, but it is just that misunderstanding and we hope to establish that truth so the film and the message of the film is not tainted because the history is worth telling today.

Barkha: Irfan, if I bring you in on one point. Because sometimes people mean something and another thing happens. It is the perils of coming into a country where you do not necessarily speak the language of the people. It happens in rural urban clashes within India itself. There are people who speak English…Not just as somebody who is a member of this cast and crew, but as a Muslim it is such a sensitive subject. Right now you know the very suggestion that somebody may have said what Brad say didn’t happen…”You bloody Muslim”. It automatically brings India together and you start looking at the crew who came in as the outsider. What did you feel about this when you read about this, heard about this, saw the visuals on TV of parents saying this is what happened.

Irfan: You know I saw a channel. They were continuously running a story of what happened here. It was a completely biased approach that they had because they were saying Brad “Pint”, Anjelina Jolie’s boyfriend was there and he did not come out, Irfan Khan was there in the shooting and he didn’t say anything to the parents. Now, I say he was not there. He was in Varanasi and I am sure about it. We were shooting inside and when we came out of the hotel everyone was there, the press was there and they wanted to cover it. It is their job…OK but they were following us and when we went inside the school the timing was such that we were entering and kids were coming out.

As we got in we started shooting. We were supposed to be doing scenes so we were busy doing the shoot and suddenly we started hearing some noises. We thought the press was trying to cover it. Then it took another shape and I was continuously laughing, saying it was nothing.

Barkha: You must have seen this in India so many times?

Irfan: Yes. So many times and today when I saw them so concerned I said it is nothing.

Barkha: And it would have been nothing, had it not been for that allegation?

Irfan: I can vouch that Brad would not keep such racial people with him. Whatever I have understood about him, about the intention of the film and why they are making the film, this is an actor I know what is all about.

Brad: You know we have an interracial family. It is very important to us that our kids grow up understanding their own respective cultures, their own religions, of the country they are from. This is our intention.

Barkha: You have three children from completely different parts of the world.

Brad: Yes. Ethiopia, Cambodia, and our other daughter was born in Namibia. That is understood in all the children as well as us because we believe so much in the importance of where they come from and the idea that we can all get along and we can live and let live.

Barkha: But Brad, not to be cynic but the allegation is not that Brad Pitt and Irfan Khan came out into the crowd and made racial remarks. The allegation is that in the heat of the moment your security guards may have lost their temper and said something that was inappropriate.

Brad: Again I am saying that we would never ever hire these people. We will never work with them because it goes against everything we believe in. Also, these men are fathers, they all have kids themselves. They were hoping to get back home from tomorrow. But they will never hurt a child or yell at a child. They will never push the child.

Barkha: Did you get the chance to speak with them and what is their version?

Brad: Absolutely, I know their integrity. As Irfan said when they drove up to the school they were shooting a scene. This brings us to the subject of the role of media and its capability. There are very aggressive facts on media and I am certainly not entitled to believe it. But this is a particular fact that they have been aggressive and have not given us a moment of peace.

Also, the other day when we were taking a walk with our kids, we were surrounded by the local guys. I told them that we are trying to take our kids for a walk and I understand you guys want to take pictures but keep a distance and not scare the kids. But they completely ignored and just surrounded us. The kids did not know how to take it, so we called up the office and came back.. From my investigation they were blocking the gates as the kids were trying to come out of the school. The parents had come to pick up their kids. Now this is not mentioned in the media at all and also this particular fact that paparazzi or tabloid media (or how we want to label them) also rushed to the gate of the school, carrying itself to a fracas.

Barkha: So the school also said that the cast and crew came an hour later than they were meant to and therefore hit the peak time.

Brad: I don’t understand that. I had not heard that but I want to say it just brings up an interesting debate on when the media actually creates the news and staying there just observing and recording news. I think it is a debate that needs to be had because they certainly say this.

Barkha: Well we have heard that debate many times in our country. Just one last question on this incident, do you believe that people who work with you can ever say this?

Brad: I tell you with all my honour…absolutely not.

Barkha: So do you think it is all a misunderstanding? You think the people who are making the allegations are lying?

Brad: Knowing all intentions of the story I am absolutely baffled by all this. I do not know it is the subject matter of this film itself that lead to people questioning, may be we should have explained our intentions about the story when we came here.

Barkha: May be you hid from the press too much.

Brad: Yeah…you know our idea is to come, do our work, have an experience at the end, have a press conference and talk about it. My job was producing the film, deal with my kids, and as I said we probably should have come out of the gate and explained our purpose here.

Barkha: Do you feel regret even though you feel your bodyguards did not say anything?

Brad: Let me tell you what I regret. I regret that the students’ day at the school was disrupted and I also believe the media who were present should join me in that regret because they were also the part of the problem…and well I regret that.

How do you know they can’t name one film? Speaking from experience having been in Uganda, a country less credited with sophistication than most third world countries, when M&MSmith was showing there, posters of AJ and BP were everywhere. Not having been to India you may be correct, but please don’t make a speculation unless you can substantiate it…you are making an unfair judgement of the people of that country. Plus we’re gawking just from afar.

Her kids also need to live in a home not hotels - and not exposed to all the different disease from some of the places she drags them to. They never look like normal kids without worry on their faces - they always seem to be sneering or falling asleep out of what appears to be exhaustion. I dont think Angie and Brad are putting the needs of the children first. Probably because they dont want to split up the family when shooting a movie - but if the bond between them is strong than being apart for a couple months (coming home during that time for visits of course) will do no harm and might help the kids to develope friends and a home life. Hollywood star Angelina Jolie is angry at the way her security officers were treated by the Mumbai police, sources close to the film unit of A Mighty Heart told DNA.

Despite rumours that she was set to leave the country early in the wake of the incident, the actress will remain in India till next week.

After two days of high voltage drama, which saw three bodyguards of the star couple running into trouble with the cops, the duo were seen relaxing with their children Zahara and Maddox on Saturday evening by taking a joyride to Alibaug on a ferry.

Jolie has finished her portion of the shooting for A Mighty Heart, which her partner Brad Pitt is producing. Her next destination after India is likely to be Cambodia, which she will visit in her capacity as UN Goodwill Ambassador.

‘Guards were self-employed’

The first day of questioning of the three bodyguards of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt at the Azad Maidan police station focussed around the credentials of the security men.

They were arrested on Friday for allegedly making derogatory remarks to parents of students studying in the Anjum-e-Islam school, where a portion of the film A Mighty Heart was shot.

Investigating Officer Police Sub-Inspector Dhananjay Sonawane told DNA: “We questioned them on Saturday about which security agency they belonged to in the United Kingdom to which the three said they were self-employed security men who were directly hired by Jolie and Pitt. We have also written to the British consulate asking whether any prior government approval was accorded to the security guards.”

I usually travel with friends. My trip to Kenya was a little unexpected. I was actually planning to visit South Africa alone but a friend of mine got a job with an NGO in Kenya so I just changed my plans. Then out of no where another friend of ours decided to come along. We had an absolute blast. Any country is Africa has been my dream vacation since I was a kid. Since Kenya is known for his wildlife, it was tops on my list to safari and safari I did. I will never be able to go to a zoo again. Seeing animals in their natural habitat made me giddy. We were even charged by an elephant. Scariest shiz ever but wonderful all at the same time. In the middle of the night, elephants would play with our tents. Again, the freakiest shiz ever but I figured if I was gonna die I’d rather die by elephant. LOL Enough of that. I could talk about this experience forever.

Cops delete Jolie’s snaps by mistake

Guess why actress Angelina Jolie won’t have sweet memories to take back with her after all?

Not only were her bodyguards arrested yesterday but the snaps her Hindi interpreter Nadira (25) had taken of Jolie and her children were accidentally erased by the police who were questioning the bodyguards at the Azad Maidan police station.

Jolie’s bodyguards Michael John Brett (50) of Woodcote Valley, Robert Pattrick Dunn (35) of Bigginhill and Thomas Edward Macdams (47), of Stafford, were arrested under sections 506(2) (Criminal intimidation), 298 (Hurting religious sentiments), 504 and 323 of the IPC yesterday in connection with the fracas at the Anjuman-e-Islam school.

They were taken to the police station for questioning where Nadira, Jolie’s interpreter for the past few years, was also present. When the questioning began, she made the mistake of whipping out her digital camera to record the proceedings.

“Police procedure cannot be pictured or taped inside the police station without prior permission and recording the questioning of an accused is not allowed unless the court grants permission,” said Senior Inspector P D Khanvilkar of Azad Maidan police station.

Snatching the digicam from her hands, the police erased a bit more than they should have. Sources from Jolie’s camp claim the police deleted all the personal photographs that Nadira had taken, including pictures of Jolie and her children.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Azad Maidan division) Prakash Ade denied having any knowledge about personal pictures being deleted by the police. Sub-inspector Avinash Sonawne of Azad Maidan station said, “She deleted the pictures herself.”

Nadira was issued a warning and the camera was returned to her after the hearing of the bodyguards, which happened yesterday morning. Nadira has tendered a verbal apology to the police.

Actress Angelina Jolie sent a press release yesterday stating, “It is not surprising that the press involved failed to mention their share of the responsibility in the chaos.

As for this horrible rumor that someone referred to a local as a ‘bloody Indian,’ let me say this, ‘I would never work with anyone who was derogatory towards another man’s race. My family is of mixed race’.”

Guards irked

After the complainant Zuber Ansari (47) identified the bodyguards, a police team headed by Sub-inspector Sonawne visited room no 306 at the Taj Hotel at 9.30 am and requested the three men to accompany them to the police station for an inquiry.

However, in the police station, the bodyguards were informed of their arrest.

“How could they do this? The police told us they would conduct an inquiry and release us, but arrested us instead. They cheated us,” Dunn was heard saying in the police station.

Sonawne admitted they had to make such a statement in order to avoid any ruckus in the hotel.

The men initially refused to co-operate with the cops. It was only after the intervention of their lawyers, Mahesh Jethmalani and Dinesh Tiwari and officials from the British High Commission, that they began to speak.

The three were produced before the Esplanade Court and were granted bail after paying a surety of Rs 25,000 each. They have been directed to report to the police station every day for a week.

People feel that since Mad travels that much , there is no stability for the kid. I think you are worrying too much.

Stability for a child is NOT referring to staying put in one single city. Stability for a child is referring to a child having loving parents, that one parent is not bringing a different boyfriend or girlfriend every few months, It refers to the parents who are loving, attentive and kind to their children. It refers to the parents who are not on drugs or alcohol. It refers to the harmony of the household.

People are too quick to jump to conclusion that Mad should stay put in one city for schooling and not do much travelling. I am sure Mad is being home schooled. There is nothing wrong with home school. The curriculum is more customized. Social skills does not have to be achieved in a school environment. Mad can pick up tennis, or play with other children on the set. Home schooling is acturally more work. There are progress reports to file with the proper department. The child will be tested just like you and me.

I have no problem in Mad travelling. At this young age, it is actually good for Mad. Travel is knowledge. It broadens your mind. It expands your horizon. You cant get anything better than that.

I cannot predict whether Jolie and Pitt’s children will have a successful career in acting, doctor, engineer. This is too early to tell. But I can say, without a word of doubt., that these children will grow up well adapted, good team player, and responsible citizens.

People should be kind to this family. For those people who wrote hateful and hurtful remarks, remember, you reap what you sow.

The elephant charge:
We were actually in a jeep when we came upon a momma elephant and her baby. Now our guide knew not to get too close but I always wonder if we humans share the same definition as the elephant as to what “too close” is. Anywho, I’ve seen enough nature shows through the years to know that when an elephant shakes it head it might be ready to charge. Apparently our guide Simon had the same thought and began to turn the jeep around just as momma elephant began to charge. My heart was in my throat and it was glorious. It was a fake charge. Just a warning telling our asses to back the eff off.

Now one final elephant story. Once dusk sets in at camp, visitors are not allowed to walk along the grounds without security escort. This is because the camp is in the middle of the Masai Mara and is basically open to any animal that wants to visit. Lions, Hyenna, Giraffe, Elephant, you name it. Now there’s a family of elephant that likes to spend their nights in camp. Why? Don’t really know. Anywho, after dinner our guide who’s walking us back to our tents, asks if we would like to see Big Momma. Now you have to realize its pitch black and we are making our way along the trail by flashlight. Three of us say yes (of course I’m the loudest) and my friend Teresa yells ***** No. She was out voted. We walk for about 10 seconds when the light from the flashlight hits upon the largest animal I have even seen. Must have been 10 stories high and looking straight at us. She raises her trunk and makes the noise only an elephant can make. Now I don’t speak elephant but I’m pretty sure she said, Who the f uck are you looking at?! This is when my friend Teresa started yelling, “turn the flashlight off, turn the flashlight off!” LOL She’ll never live that down.

I’m so glad that all the hoopla is blowing over now — all the stuff about his ex and all. This is a lovely family. I think they were a little stiff with each other at first, but now they look really, really happy. Look at their relaxed expressions. You can really see how Brad is just proud to be a father. They have a life that anyone would envy. It must be so exciting to travel to so many exotic locations with your entire family and stay in beautiful hotels and meet so many different people. As a mother of 3 , I am constantly amazed at the “non fans” of Brad and Angelina to harp , criticise , spew hatred, racism and more.. not only at Brad and Angelina but also on their children. I can only wonder at their mentality and age in all this ignorance. Life is a lot more than thinking about your own selfish self. Being a mother, one would naturally understand this calling or just being a caring individual would make one well aware of other people feelings, lives, children and more that one would constantly place ahead of their own selfish self.

The more I read about this incident, the more fishy it seems to me. I find the behaviour of the Indian police very suspectful. They are not playing by the rule, and i hope that all Hollywood studios will boycott India. Those Indians wh owant to put a blame on Brad and Angie, they want to teach a lesson to Westerners, but in the long run they only hurt themselves.

How ANYONE can look at that video and NOT understand why security guards might be a tad aggressive is beyond me. I would fight like a tiger if I were stuck in a crowd like that. As you have hopefully figured out, this forum is different than most. It is NOT a “hate” forum like Female First, D-Listed, etc, but a “support” and information forum for those sincerely interested in the BAMZS family. The tone is different here and the regular posters very nice, well educated (not necessarily academically but defnitely well informed), logical and rational and sometimes downright silly…not to say there isn’t some name calling here and JA bashing but as I’ve said many times on this forum…we all can’t be saints all the time. Plus if you are really interested in the BAMZS family and/or a good debate where logic rules and emotions most of the time do not influence opinions, this is the place… and “Yes” to answer your question “do you normally suffer these kind of people?, there are mean-spirited, downright hateful posters who come to any JJ BAMZS thread and deliberately promote uncalled for, hideous, vicious posts “just because”. This has been happening over the many months to a year that I’ve been lurking on JJ. I would say at least once a month, there is at least one incident of really ugly vile hate. Sometimes they are college/high school kids on school break, sometimes seriously deranged individuals and more often people who enjoy provoking/baiting/instigating emotions if not against innocent children and BP/AJ but against regulars (and their children) who post here. This site is an easy target and the regulars here have become a “family in themselves” because of it. Because there are so many “haters” as they call them, regulars here are rightfully more protective, cautious, suspicious of any new poster who comes with an “attitude” or posts with generalities without qualifications. I’m sure you would protect your family in the same manner if the kind of vile comments you just read were directed at them…is that taking it seriously…you decide. I can reassure you that if you are a serious poster wanting to debate a wide range of topics, be prepared to substantiate facts, qualify your comments with reasonable references or links, be willing to listen to honest opinions and to participate in some really good debates eg the topic on Oprah was great, the Maddox thigh topic and Zahara’s hair issue was silly fun, computer topics are always informative. You ask “do people really take this stuff that seriously???…well yes and no, yes to what is happening to the BAMZS family, their safety, their misinterpreted image, the lack of appreciation for what they have done in recognizing the refugee issue, children, etc and the unsubstantiated/non factual negative taunting, the negative inuendoes, the manipulation by the tabloids and “no” to JA in general because she is somewhat of a joke…really. I can honestly say to you if you are serious about staying on this forum lurk for awhile and understand the tone, get to know the regulars with their postings, be humble because someone on this forum will definitely know more than you and provide you with references, dates and links about a given topic. Posters here are international and the regulars very saavy. And if you lurk and don’t like it …so be it. This is a positive site, not a negative one and it’s not for everyone…some get their kicks from negativity. I hope you understand more about BAMZS fans in general and especially the ones who frequent here.

After the ruckus over the alleged racial slur by Angelina Jolie’s bodyguards, Brad Pitt explains his side of the story.

It is national news by now that Brangelina’s bodyguards, on Thursday, allegedly roughed up a few people (including a child and a woman) and made racist remarks while handling a crowd of parents when the movie A Mighty Heart was being shot at Anjuman-e-Islam school in south Mumbai.

In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Brad Pitt has denied that any racial remarks were made.

Speaking to NDTV’s managing editor Barkha Dutt, Pitt said reports of racist slur are “absolutely not true” and he is “horrified by this allegation.”

Pitt said he and Jolie (his partner) have an inter-racial family and they would never hire anyone who is a racist. “It goes against everything we believe in,” Pitt said.

Corroborating Pitt’s assertion, Irrfan Khan , the Indian actor who is working with Jolie in the film, told Barkha Dutt that the entire story has been presented in a “completely biased way” by the media.

“I can vouch for his integrity,” Khan said pointing towards Pitt.

Khan, who was present at the shoot when the incident happened, said it was paparazzi that were blocking the gate. And that is why the whole argument started.

Pitt said the very allegations of racial slur goes against the purpose of the movie they are making.

‘A Mighty Heart’ is based on “the idea of embracing all cultures,” Pitt said.

However, he regretted that the students’ day was disrupted at the school.

The entire interview will be telecast on NDTV on Saturday night at 2200 hrs IST.
