Brad Pitt denies star couple’s bodyguards ‘racist’(AFP)

NEW DELHI - Hollywood star Brad Pitt denied on Saturday that any of the bodyguards working for him and his partner, fellow actor Angelina Jolie, were racist.

Pitt’s statement came after three of their bodyguards were arrested following a scuffle at an Islamic school in the financial capital of Mumbai, where Jolie was shooting the film ‘A Mighty Heart.’

‘This is an awful, awful misunderstanding. We would never employ anyone who is racist, or who would hurt or push a child,’ Pitt told India’s NDTV television in a damage-limitation interview.

Parents at the school had accused the bodyguards of shouting, ‘You bloody Indians, you bloody Muslims,’ when they came to collect their children after classes.

They also accused the bodyguards of pushing around parents and children and making a gesture miming slitting a throat.

‘This is not what Angelina and I wanted,’ Pitt said.

‘Angelina and I have a multi-racial family, we want them to respect and understand different religions.’

Pitt, who is producing the film in which Jolie is starring about US journalist Daniel Pearl’s abduction and murder by Islamic militants in Pakistan in 2002, had apologised Friday to Mumbai police over the incident.

The three bodyguards have been released on bail each of 25,000 rupees (555 dollars) after being held on accusations of making threats and an ‘insult to religion.’

‘The case appears to be in cold storage now’ unless police decide to pursue the case, Mahesh Jethmalani, a lawyer who represented the bodyguards, told AFP.

The bodyguards — Thomas MacAdam, Robert Dunn and Michael Bret who are all British nationals — were arrested early Friday at a five-star hotel in Mumbai.

In October, one of the couple’s bodyguards was caught on camera by an Indian television crew grabbing a British photographer by the throat and warning him to stay away.

Jolie has also denied that her bodyguards had made racist comments.

‘Let me say this: I would never work with anyone who was derogatory towards another man’s race. My family is of mixed race,’ she said in a statement.

‘It is not surprising that the press involved failed to mention their share of the responsibility in the chaos,’ Jolie added.

The film’s production house said it had permission to film at the premises, but a battery of press photographers rushed in when the school gates were opened, ‘creating confusion.’

In the interview with NDTV, Pitt dismissed rumours that the couple who have three children — two adopted — planned to adopt an Indian baby now.

The rumours surfaced after the pair visited an orphanage in the western city of Pune and distributed toys.

However, Pitt said they might in the future.

‘We are not planning to adopt from India at this point but it’s certainly something we would consider in the future,’ he said.

This is so sweet. They all look great. I still want them to leave and come home for the holidays. I know that their families really miss them and more importantly the kiddies – grandparents always love the little ones.

Wow, what a great morning. Lovely family. My goodness, the crowds. I can’t imagine having 100’s of people gawking at me wherever I go. This must be hard for them but they maintain grace under pressure, always.
