Brad Pitt gave an exclusive interview to NDTV (New Delhi Television Limited) late last week, speaking out against the the bodyguard controversy. Brad was interviewed by NDTV’s Managing Editor Barkha Dutt and sat alongside Indian theater and film actor, Irfan Khan. Watch the first 8 minutes below! Part II after the jump… Thanks, Alexanderina!!
Here’s an excerpt of what Brad had to say: “This is not what Angelina [Jolie] and I wanted. This contradicts the message of the film we are trying to make. Angelina and I have a multi-racial family, we want them to respect and understand different religions. Maybe we should have explained our intentions when we first got here. We would not hire anyone who is racist or who would hurt or push a child.”

You’re so right. A poster before yours already has a snarky comment re the interview so you know after a few posts this thread will go downhill — we must not allow that!!! If Brad had not said anything, then everyone would say that his bodyguards did do something. He HAD to go and defend his employees, otherwise he’s an employer who’s not worth his salt.
By the way, he still so GD hot!!! And I am so pleased that Irfan Khan appeared with him on the interview.

The Paps now are so aggressive with total disregard for people’s rights. They have begun to create the news and slant it in their favor. People can see this on all the Paps blogs that have sprung up. I am sure that this incident will not affect the message in the film nor dishearten BP and AJ from continuing their humantarian work. Best wishes to BAMZS and safe travel.

HOLLYWOOD stars Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were already married when they tied the knot in a spectacular £1 million wedding at a fairytale Italian castle, it emerged yesterday.
Cruise’s agent revealed the couple had a legal ceremony in America before flying to Italy, as the Church of Scientology service is not recognised there.
Arnold Robinson, Cruise’s agent, said they had “officialised” their marriage in Los Angeles before flying to Italy - prompting accusations Saturday’s event was just a publicity stunt.
Residents also spoke out against the star after he failed to acknowledge the thousands of fans by getting out of his car or making a public appearance outside Odescalchi Castle at Bracciano, north of Rome.
Loredana Ruggiero, a fan, said: “I waited outside all day and virtually all night. It was cold and rainy and then in the evening it was foggy and I didn’t see them once.
“It’s a shame as we had made them so welcome. They could have got out of their cars or waved from the castle, but instead they didn’t acknowledge us at all. I feel really snubbed.”
Mayor Patrizia Riccioni also hit out, saying: “It would have been nice for them to stop and wave at the townfolk.
“They welcomed them with open arms and put up with a lot of inconvenience over the last few days so it would have been nice if they had made a gesture.
“The citizens are upset that the mayor of Rome was invited and the mayor of Bracciano wasn’t - they have also asked me to reconsider giving the couple honorary citizenship.
“It’s too early to make a decision on that, but all I will say is that the cherry on the cake would have been for them to acknowledge the people of Bracciano.
“Nevertheless, I have nothing against the couple, to whom I am very grateful for all the international publicity. It’s likely it was just a slip-up by the organisers of the wedding.”
Celebrities including Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, Brooke Shields and Jim Carrey flew in for the event at the 500-year-old, ivy-covered castle.
Holmes arrived first, followed by guests in a series of blacked-out minibuses.
Cruise arrived at 4pm and the wedding took place at 6pm in the Sala dei Armi (Hall of Arms).
The ceremony angered the local priest, Father Nicola Fiorentini, who rang his bells for evening Saturday Mass longer and louder than normal before the wedding began. He said: “It wasn’t a wedding at all. It was all just for publicity. I can’t believe such an event was allowed to take place in the castle. A pope once stayed there and now we have all this. It’s shameful and an offence.”
The wedding finished just after midnight, following a firework display that was largely blanketed by the thick fog that descended on the castle.
The couple flew out of Italy early yesterday aboard a private jet and headed to the Maldives on honeymoon.
i am struck by how calm he always is in all of his interviews.
I wonder what went through his mind when Irfan Khan paused & referred to him as “Angelina’s boyfriend”. I know they don’t feel the need to get married but it probably bothered him somewhat to be referred to as her boyfriend when he’s much more than that. He should have said “Yo, Irfan. I am her baby’s daddy” :)

I like when things are not rehearsed that is when you get the most honest answers IMO. I think you can tell when things are staged or the answers are the PR answers. But this interview seems unexpected as things happened so fast but necessary as to address it immediately and very much from an honest place.
Brad needed to have a clearer understanding of what he was going to say and REHEARSED IT so he could just say it and not get caught so many times looking up while he tries to figure out the word or phrase he wanted to use.
I think I actually prefer to read transcripts of his interviews rather than actually watch him give one because It’s almost painful to watch him struggle to put a clear and concise sentence together.
And it drove me crazy that he kept answering her repeated direct questions about the incident with a long-winded statement about the message of the movie because that’s not answering her question and you could tell she knew he was deflecting because she kept going back to ask the question again.
BUT he does look good and that’s what’s important, right?
Don’t like either Tom or Katie but waving to the crowd would have been a lose-lose situation. The people felt snubbed for not being acknowledge but if they did come out and say wave, everyone here in America would say “Who do they think they are, some kind of King and Queen?”.
Honestly though, they should have acknowledged the crowd, after all these people put up Tom and Katie posters up everywhere - BARF - ! Also I wish I could feel sympathy for the crowd but come on! They waited outside in the rain to get a glimpse of GMD and his robot wife! Why were they treating them like royalty in the first place?

I think it would’ve been much worse, had he gone in with a prescripted answer for everything. That would’ve made him look glib and insincere. The most important thing is that he is speaking the truth, from his heart. What others might find annoying about his stuttering and searching for words to describe what he’s feeling, aren’t really more endearing and not coming off as a PR statement.

I thought that Brad and Irfan did a great job … considering this was right after the incident. Brad took his time making his comments, making sure that he is saying the right thing, not offending anybody yet standing up for his employees (the bodyguards). I like interviews like this, off the cuff, answers unrehearsed. If they had rehearsed their answers, then it would look like some planned PR ploy.

Hey Guys, I truly respect Angelina (foremost) & Brad, BUT there is actually a possibility that respectable people hire “un-respectable” people. From what I’ve heard some of the bodyguards were hired from England which is known for being a country with a huge Indian population with a fairly bad reputation among racists. Consider: 1) Did Brangelina ask questions such as “are u a bigot” when they hired the guards (did they even conduct a jobinterview??) 2) How many real bigots would answer “Yes” to that question if they wanted/needed the job? It’s easy for celebrities to talk about how tolerant they are, that doesn’t necessarily have to involve their whole “working-staff”…
I like how BP came out in the interview, speaking candidly, from the heart. He spoke like a man concerned about the issue, not like someone lecturing from the podium. I would rather hear him hesitate than listening to a news reader.

About the interview:
-Brad is saying , although in convoluted words- that he suspects there was more at play that simply paps and idiotic school and fretful parents—basically, that the movie’s terrorists portrayal was what really pissed some pro-terror group and they used the BAMZS, the movie, the whole situation to create an incident and besmirck the actors, producer and AMH even before it’s finished filming.
And Irfan sated that ABsolutely they and the bods weren’t EVEN near the gates when the shouts started…

That’s a possibility and its also a possibility that the bodyguards were falsely accused. And since paparazzi were swarming around set all day long and didn’t get any of this on camera is reason enough for me to give the bodyguards the benefit of the doubt.
I had hoped that the Reese W and Ryan P split would somehow take the spotlight off of this couple — after all, calling Ryan an adulterer would have been so right because there was proof of him cheating, and not just with one but with a lot of women. But it seems that as far as Brad and Angie go, the X’s fans are really stuck in a time loop (the Star Trek fan in me, sorry) and they keep reliving the same time frame over and over again and never advance forward.

Brad and Angelina’s have known there personal bodygaurds for quite a long time. It doesn’t take a long time to be with a person to figure out their true character, especially when they travel with you everywhere and you see how they act in times of stress. Mickey has worked with Angelina since she did Tomb Raider, by now if she had any problems with his behavior she would have gotten rid of him already.

That was a TOUGH TOUGH interview, and Brad took it. Answering truthfully, no spin, no cover, no publicist, just exposed, and he took it. It really makes him look strong and a responsible man who is protecting the important issue at heart, and his family.
Many thanks Jared and Audrey for the videoclips! I must admit, that i could hardly concentrate on Brad’s words, because i was mesmerized by him. So all this debate whether he struggled for words or not, etc, seems oh so superficial to me lol. Brad, you don’t have to explain anything, just look at us and we believe that black is white and Ritzygal is normal.
On a more serious note, I love that Brad defended the bodyguards, this is what a good boss MUST do. And I’m sure that the incident was blown out of proportion, and the whole situation was not that bad, just the Indian police had a power trip. They do it with their own stars, shame on them. And Brad was shrewd enough to do a little promotion of the movie, very good move.
I respect Irfan very much, he is a brave and honorable man. All hope is not lost wheny there are such good people in the world.
All in all, I’m happy they leave India.

It is a good thing that BP does not live his life by people’s comments on a blog. If he did, he would not have moved his life in a new direction, become a Dad, and become a humanitarian. It’s totally my belief that the papz in question that were involved, possibly anxious to get inside the school and take snaps, may have pushed and shoved the parents themselves, and they could have tried to ‘front’ and assume the identity of the film’s and/or Angie’s security detail…THEY may have shouted those words and gotten aggressive when trying to get inside the building (IF they were said at all)….to either deliberately anger the parents/Indian people towards Angelina and Brad (which would be really disgusting), and/or try to gain access pretending to be security…or BOTH.

I am convinced that the media blew this out of proportion.
But this is life. NO one single project is smooth from start to finish. You can never anticipate all the things which are going to happen. The most important thing is how to solve the problem and make good executive decision.
Brad did that tactifully and successfully.
I think it was a good thing that Brad did the interview. He wasn’t at the school, he wasn’t even in Mumbai when it happened but he came back did an “investigation” of what happened and went to the police station and then sat for an interview.
He’s a producer of the film and he and Angie are the face of the film so it should have been him to do this.
While I do believe that the paps are very much to blame for starting this whole mess, I don’t believe the guards were innocent of the ethnic and religious slurs, and my only complaint is that Brad could have done a better job in getting his point across, even though I don’t believe his assertion of their innocence.
But I always think that about Brad. With his 15+ years being famous and being interviewed, you’d think he’d be better at it. Even he says he’s not very eloquent in his speaking and it’s so evident.
He really needs to work on that.

She did a good job with the interview, and i liked that she didnt’ ask too many questions on the movie. That was not the purpose of this interview and there was no need to maket the movie at this time. Brad looked great as usual. He was not born to be a speaker , but that’s what makes him more real. I can’t relate with people who become someone else when they talk to the Media. He is who he is.

The job of the media is to create news even when there is none. Any smart person would have seen the pattern here. When superstars travel out of their countries to other parts of the world, the media put word into people’s mouth to create the needed news, they did it in Madonna’s adoption, they did it with Brad and Angie and they are trying to do it with Tom. What does it take? Ask someone in the crowd whether they are happy to have many people around and the person says no and then they broadcast it all over the world that the locals are unhappy because a particular star is around. When are we going to wisen up and call out the media on this instead of attacking these stars. If there is a stampede, how do you clearly identify who did what? Journalists are there from all over the world. The foreigner referred to in Brad and Angie’s case could have been any foreigner. Brad has interviewed his bodyguards, based on what they told him, he denied the allegations. There is also nothing of that nature caught on tape????

Seriously, do you ever find yourself frustrated? Frustrated at all of them? Barbara, Diane, Oprah – especially Oprah – for letting celebrities off too easy during interviews? Do you ever feel like they don’t “go for it”? That they don’t ask the right questions, that they don’t press the way you’d like them to?
If so, you will find this woman a refreshing breath of air – an Indian reporter who had the exclusive opportunity to interview Brad Pitt about his racist bodyguard fiasco and who did NOT accept the regular spin for an answer.
I mean she would NOT LET UP. When he wanted to talk about his movie, she pressed on about the issue. When he wanted to talk about his own personal views and those of Angelina and the crew and the theme of the movie, she CUT HIM OFF and really made sure to get her point across.
I loved every uncomfortable second.
And you will too. Especially if you’re a Brad fan… because you know what? It was a tough interview, it was a tough interviewer, and still he did it. Still he didn’t hide behind his publicist, he allowed himself to be put in the hotseat for almost half an hour, to answer allegations over and over again – trust me when I tell you, having personally interviewed celebrities, this does not happen every day. In fact, FEW stars, even the minor ones, would be allowed or be willing to be put into such an exposed position to say nothing of a someone with Brad Pitt’s stature.
Was he on a mission? Was he assigned to damage control?
Absolutely!
But how many celebrities are willing to place control over damage control in the hands of an aggressive journalist?

The Brad Bandana is the hotness. As is the tender way he’s talking to his oldest daughter. And to those who keep asking about The Chosen One and why she doesn’t get to come – I’m told it’s just not practical to bring her along on “toddler type” excursions complete with boatrides and long walks among crowds – car seat, stroller, diaper bag…you get the drift. Given they’re only gone for 5 or 6 hours max, it’s really not that big of a deal, especially with the luxury of a nanny, and then there’s also the added benefit of spending alone time with the Madd and Z.

It is obvious that for the folks who hate him, for leaving their beloved, they will latch on to anything, I think Brad did a wonderful job, one thing that came through was his honesty, he did have his pub tell him what to say, he spoke from his heart, I don’t think Mickey and the others said what they are accused off , I think a certain section of media was pissed off for not getting into the press conference, new that Brad and Angie were leaving and created this situation. I think if Brad and Angie continue using Mickey and Co they will open themselves up to more problems, I love Brad and Angie to death, but I think they need to get rid of Mickey, too much stuff has happened with him.

He maintained his status in a fickle industry like hollywood because of his genetics? Partly is.
It takes more than genetics and looks to stay in Hollywood and remain among the A list of stars for 15 years straight, honey. –But not much more. Genetics brings popularity. Then you get hooked to a beautiful and controversial woman. Those all help to maintin your a-list status.
True, there are a lot of genetically beautiful people in Hollywood who never gets to where he did in terms of popularity, which is what I don’t understand. And I’m sure, fans here can pick up this last part of my post and twist and attack me over all I’ve said. I never care about BP’s acting ability. I like Matt Damon’s acting much better, for instance. Clive Owen is another, good looking and pretty good in acting.

according to desert chick, if it was straight from the heart, brad shouldn’t have stuttered. i beg to disagree. i do some public speaking and i tape myself and when i am not scripted, and i am trying to explain my point, i stutter sometimes. even though i have been doing this for going on four years now, i still stutter when i am not reading from a script. brad, imo, was really collecting his thoughts, making sure that he says the right things, but at the same time making sure that the public would get his point that his bodyguards DID NOT DO what the police and the press said they did.

I conclude that he executed beautifully on what he wanted to accomplish. He got the message across. As a producer he is the right person to step up and speak for everybody. I am totally convinced and I’m sure many of you who watched the video agree with me.

Iam not sure if the indian population agrees with me. Iam just sad that this and many other such minor incidents would have left Brad and Angie not wanting to visit India anymore. If they do visit again, then they are probably two of the most open-minded people world has ever seen. I dont blame them if they’ve got nothing to do with India anymore :(. India is still so backward that it’s people does’nt have the dignity to treat foreigners with respect. Let alone foreigners, they dont treat their own people with respect. It’s very sad. Lot of it stems from illiteracy and over-population which results in poverty and un-civilized conditions. I can keep on going about it for pages together…. This is just India and this is how things work here. I wish BP and AJ were more prepared for all this. They should’ve done their homework before deciding to pack their bags. You finally admit it , you are a Maniston fans, Maniston fan are always bias toward Brad and Angie. still holding grudge over Brad after dumping their idol. I have faith in Jolie/Pitt that they have anticipated and planned ahead. But in real life, as in work or any relationship, NO one project is smooth from start to finish. There will always be hic-up along the road. NO one, not even an experienced planner can predict all the “future event” and prevent them. You can only anticipate a few to the best of your knowledge, but NEVER all.
You just have to deal with the bumps as they come along. The Pitts have done that beautifully and successfully. He stepped up and politely questioned the chief at the police station. He went on TV to present his case. The most important thing is how one deals with the situation and learns from them.
Watching the Indian TV, Brad got the message across. He achieved what he wanted to, and that is to clear the mis-understanding. I applaud Brad for doing an excellent job.

ITA. These are some of the experience with our IT company setting up business in India. Illiteracy , the big disparity between rich and poor. goverment red-tape, police corruption.I read somewhere that Police was so corrupt in India. like visiting Taj Mahal, the guard would ask for some grease money before entering some site. I think the police were trying to extort some money from Brad and co. How could they arrest person without evidence. the video was there. and it didn’t prove anything. I hope Brad and co. do not give in. and I think the British bodyguard should ask the help from the British consulate or embassy.

If Brad looked up during this tough interview, it should not bother people who are watching this because you know it was not rehearsed. This is real. I am a psychologist, and it is human nature to look up or sideways if you are trying to gather your thoughts. Brad’s degree (he is short may be two units before graduation at the the University of Missouri) is in journalism. He knows how to handle an interview. The fact is this is not only a simple interview of a single film, Brad in someway is representing the American people by clearing the so-called “racial” incident. I think the media wants to ask him for a press conference because he is an international star and what a great opportunity to have this incident (true or not) to get him hooked. I heard that the press in India, were sort of disappointed when he did not show up when Angie was the only one (for the Mighty Heart) and the other local stars appeared for the first press conference. That night or day, he probably took care of the kids. With this so called racial incident (which happened or not) then the media got their chance to interview the producer of this film. So, I think they really got what they wanted after all. I think Brad, did a good job by looking at the positive aspect of the film. He answered the question by dealing with the positive. The incident should be answered by the judge because Brad was not there when it happened. He answered the question directly by stating their intention and their policy of hiring their employees. Are you people not understanding? What answer do you want to hear?
Oh yah, I was not there but my employee was brutal and I will punish him. Oh no, my employee is innocent and perfect. You know what I mean. He did not avoid the questions. He is a journalism major. He knows the works. He is just a good man and this media circus is pathetic.
All these carpers are yet again picking the microscopic details of everything. Re: stuttering, come on, so you guys don’t stutter? well that’s good news for you but mind you guys, there are many individuals out there that do stutter! About 75-90% of people rather wanna jump a bridge than speak. Actually, that might not be true. These days the government has laws where in the lower caste people have 25-35%(i dont know the exact %) of govt jobs reserved for them. So, if you meant “company” as in public works, i doubt what you heard were true cuz, public or govt enterprises always makes sure the lower caste people are given preferences . Again all this is very politically motivated. All these reservations are done to make sure the politicians secure the lower caste electoral vote bank. And also, the minorities(muslims, christians, Anglo-indians etc) have some reservations too. But in private firms, the jobs are always for those who do good at the interviews and its all merit based. It does’nt matter what caste you are. They’ll have aptitude tests when you are a fresher applying for a job at a private firm.

You explained it perfectly. I think it’s funny how so many haters cavalierly call this man stupid. Stupid he’s not.
He knows full well the muslim community in India are not happy about him filming this type of movie, about a Jew, none the less. They used this inicident, in which, according to Irfan Khan, the bodyguards weren’t even near to be involved, to besmirch the movie and the reputations of Jolie-Pitt and Co.
He was smart in reasserting to the Indian public, via a popular talk show, with a TV personality as well respected as Oprah is by the public in this country, that the film will in no way disrespect Muslims.
Anyone who couldn’t pick that message up in this interview IMO is missing the point entirely. He might not seem bright to you, but he is. He knows a simple apology is beside the point. To apologize is to admit wrong doing, and he did nothing wrong, nor did his men. It hasn’t been proven the bodyguards made racials slurs, beat children, or abused women my God the allegations sound completely ludacris, especially since the only video of the incident was one that showed EXACTLY what Irfan Khan described. That video wasn’t after the fact, that video was the fact. I feel badly that they have to live down such allegations when there is strong evidence regarding their innocence, even among people who used to give them the benefit of the doubt.
At the end of the day this incident is over. It was blown out of proportion to ruin the film, but I don’t think it will work. I’m going to purchase and read A Mighty Heart for myself. I’m interested and knowing and understanding Daniel Pearls story.

I think it was actually the people from media who said the words and pushed the children, not the bodyguards. Brad did not actually said this but he kind of implicate this and the Indian guy also mentioned this.
It is so sad thing but I do not think the AMH movie will be affected by this incidence.
It will be out in 2007, so by that time eveything will be resolved or people would forget about it.
