Dreamgirls Takes Vanity Fair Cover
GIRLS GOTTA DREAM! Here’s a sneak peak of Vanity Fair’s January 2007 issue with Dreamgirls‘ Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, and Beyonce Knowles on the cover. The cover was photographed by Mark Seliger in West Hollywood and is supposedly a fold-out with Jennifer Hudson and Anika Noni Rose on the other half.

It’s really not a black or white issue. As with most “challenges” in the world, Vanity Fair doesn’t promote black entertainers on their covers for one reason — money. Black people have not been the leading subscribers of Vanity Fair. Buying one or two VF magazines a year doesn’t count. It’s subcribers and those subscribers translate into advertising dollars. Those ads in the magazine cater to the subscribers of the magazine.
The right magazine covers to attract the right sbscribers to attract the right advertisers equals revenue added to the VF bottom line.
If VF were to start having more black entertainers on their covers the number of new subscribers would not compensate for the loss revenue in subscriptions and in advertising dollars.
The reason you have Jamie Foxx, Beyonce and Eddie Murphy on the cover has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with money. This movie was a much loved musical on Broadway. It will make a lot of money because it will reach three audiences; black people who enjoy a good movie, theater enthusiasts and white people who enjoy a good movie. But when you have a smart man like David Geffen behind a production, you can bet he will do everything in his power to promote it the right way.
Bottom line is it’s going to be a good movie. And good movies will have great promotion.
amen.
They should have had Diana Ross on the Cover and the rest of them on the inside fold with Jennifer Hudson. I buy that to hear Diana say they need to pay her royalties for copin’ her style.

Why not portray people on your cover who don’t subscribe anyway? Maybe that will get them to subscribe?
Also, this idea that white people only want to see other white people on magazine covers is bogus. The advertisers and media decide this - not decent folks who could not care less.
We buy black music in a heartbeat, and have been doing so for decades, why not black people on covers?
It makes no sense. Just like they think women can’t sell movies. Crap. Women sell movies. The media and money hungry guys just are not listening. But trust me female actresses can sell a movie yet actresses still make less than men. Not fair.
Their assessment of the consumer is completely off (as usual)!
^^^^^^^^^^^^ Thank you Thank You Thank you to many of you posters above. How does Gretchen Mol guarantee more magazines sold than let’s say, any of the major recording artists who are black?
VF has complete white unknowns on their covers but ignore really famous black people. Finally someone sees it as I see it. Why is it so hard to admit? Also if it was for money then on their Hollywood issues since they already have like 5 or 6 white people on the cover who are guaranteed to sell the magazine, why not include one who is black? If there is a black person they are usually in the inside flap but they are not part of the cover photo that appears on the front cover.
I am not saying they are consciously doing this, they are just not making the effort and in an undustry full of a lot of talented black people, it is time for VF to make the effort. It is not like we are talking about the Skier’s association or the surfer’s association magazine where there are a fewer number of blacks in those industries - we are talking about music and film here, hello!?
Money motivates covers on Vanity Fair? So in 13 years since Tina Turner in 1993, only Beyonce and Will Smith are the black people capable of bringing in the big bucks? So Gretchen Moll and Kate Moss sell more magazines than the never featured on Vanity Fair, megastar Janet Jackson? Not even Tiger Woods? Not even Michael Jordan? I mean Tiger - he’s a no brainer, he’s biracial. He could at least bring Vanity Fair half of the money! Hmm. Very interesting.
