Clooney and Cheadle at Darfur Conference
George Clooney and Don Cheadle recently came back from a trip to Cairo where they lobbied for Egypt’s support to aid the victims of the genocide taking place in Sudan’s Darfur region.
The two actors were at hand at UN Headquarters on Friday, December 15, 2006 with Olympic speed skater Joey Cheek and Olympic marathon runner Tegla Loroupe answering questions from the press about the situation in Darfur.

The US got involved in Irag because of the genocide occuring over there and the threat of terrorism to the US. Both of those reasons are very worthy causes. The US has tried to improve conditions of life for those people and is now being condemned for it because we are not winning and have not had great results. Partly because of poor planning on our part and partly because no one expected the iraqi people to revolt against what we were trying to do for them.
Darfur is a very worthy cause as well but their government has banned aid in any form and will only allow UN presence in the area. No military aid. They do not want our interference. We should fight to change that but I think it will be interesting to see if the same thing happens. The US tries to help, Darfur resists, everything gets all fucked up and we are again condemned for stepping in and trying to change everything.
How is hollywood going to react then? Are they going to continue to support our government when the tides turn or are they going to turn against it as everyone has with Iraq?
George is very smart and I also repsect the fact that he has refuesd to do the whole marrying and divorcing every five years like some Hollywood characters. It only makes him more sexy. A smart man is always more attractive than some shallow man anytime.
