McSteamy Suits Up For GQ

The Anatomy of Eric Dane :: If you’re still pretending you’re not one of the 22 million people a week watching the frothy prime-time soap Grey’s Anatomy, we’ll play along and tell you that Eric Dane stars on the ABC Show as Dr. Mark Sloan, the pal turned nemesis of Patrick Dempsey’s well-coifed Dr. Derek Shepherd. If you’re really in denial, we’ll remind you that your girlfriend refers to Dane simply as “McSteamy.” But seriously, who are you kidding? This is the season Grey’s mushroomed from chick fare to cross-cultural phenomenon–enjoy by womened, men, cats, and dogs alike–and the 34-year-old Dane, previously a TV itinerant (with appearances on Charmed, Gideon’s Crossing, The Wonder Years, and, um… Silk Stalkings), is humbled by the sudden public attention. “When someone comes up and says hi, my first reaction is, ‘Did we go to high school together”? Dane says. “Then I realize that they’ve seen me on the show. It’s not something I’m entirely used to yet.”

Married in real life to the actress Rebecca Gayheart, Dane is used to at least one aspect of hit-TV-show life: not spilling the beans on the plot. He’s mum on upcoming Grey’s details, though he teases that McSteamy might be close to burying the macho hatchet with Dr. Shepherd, whom he betrayed years ago by seducing Shepherd’s wife. Dane also displays perfect bedside manner when discussing the recent tabloid hullaballo over cast-member fisticuffs: “In my estimation, it was wildly overblown.
