Mr & Mrs Smith Hits Small Screen

A one-hour pilot of Mr. & Mrs. Smith was just given the green light, which is being described as ” ‘Married … With Children’ with guns.” SERIOUSLY?
Here’s what The Hollywood Reporter is saying:

The film’s writer, Simon Kinberg, penned the pilot script, about John and Jane Smith, a married couple who both work as assassins.

The film’s director, Doug Liman, is on board to helm the pilot and executive produce with Kinberg and Dave Bartis.

The pilot takes place about six months after the events in the 2005 feature starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, which grossed more than $186 million in North America. The Smiths have bought a new house in a new suburb and have re-established their businesses, but the attraction and sexual spark they had found at movie’s end has dwindled, and they are back dealing with marital issues.

“In a way, the show is all about the marriage,” Kinberg said. “It is a show about any married couple trying to balance professional and home life.”

Brad and Angie’s names are used for publicity. Remember the hotel in Italy that kept leaking info that Brad and Angie were getting married there. Brad and Angie were also supposed to be at TomKat’s wedding. I believe Oprah probably met the JP’s at New York when they attended a function with Bill Clinton. If they are invited, they are just too busy to attend at this time of the year, I’m sure JP’s will send their well wishes.

Stopped in for a sec-Cliniqua, u r right Peta and Roy could rock it-I love lafemme Nikita-Curious-I am black-I do not hate Oprah-I am not a fan of hers anymore-When I was a stay at home mom-I really bought inot a lot of what her show was about-I even had a subscription-I believe her influence has empowered many women-I believe she came from a place in her life where she needed polishing because she wasn certainly a diamond in the rough-she then tried to reach back and help all women no matter what color, polish themselves and hold their heads up despite what life has given handed them. This works for some and for some it does not. I appreciate O’s efforts. But here is my problem-when you are in a certain position you have an obligation to yourself-and those you are purposefully trying to influence-I find O’s shows to be superficial and full of fluff these days-I used to do research-the most significant aspect of measuring progress is being able to adequately identify exactly what your deficiencies are what is needed to change the status-using the example of her building a school in Africa, I wonder if the families of the girls could use a house that is adequately furnished? I wonder could they use a garden out back so they could have food-I wonder if the mom and aunts in that family could use a few sewing machines, material boats and notions-I just took care of food-clothing and shelter-education is important, but basic necessities are crucial-I believe Maslow was accurate when he stated that we cannot move to self-actualization until we first satisfy certain needs, with the most basic of those needs being physical needs-As some stated before, It’s Oprah’s money, but wow-if I had that money I would start right in the city I live in. I would pay every educational loan off for teachers, fireman, policeman and healthcare workers-I would then pay off all of their mortgages-then I would find families with hardworking parents and children who were doing well in school-I would pay off their mortgage and fully fund the educations of their kids-You see I believe we need to start helping those who are the backbone of this country-we need to stop wasting tax dollars and charitable contributions on ppl who will never put back in what they take out-we need to get a totally new definition of charity-jmho

I’ll applaud anyone who is willing to help . But you asked a question and I was voicing my concern about Oprah’s work. And it’s just that, a concern, not a denouncement of her contributions. I did not intend to make it come out as if I was denouncing or degrading her work, but I am concerned. Anytime, a person is willing to make such a large contribution, they should think about the consequences it will have. The girls who will recieve an education at that school are very lucky and I have no doubt that they will grow up to be intelligent women one day.

But what happens when only certain children are allowed the privelege of getting a sublime educational experience? What kind of consequences will that have on the community and on the kids who will grow up without that opportunity to better their minds?

I’m talking about long term consequences here. When you have a small population of bright girls who are the only ones who will be given such an education, will the burden lie on them to help the others when they grow up to women? And since they will be the ones who will grow up to be bright women, will they be expected to lead an illiterate group of people? What kind of community will that create? Is it that the knowledgeable adults will lead the community and the uneducated will be expected to follow blindly? Is that putting too much power into certain people’s hand? Shouldn’t the citizens in a community all be educated so they can all contribute to society and make informed decisions regarding their own lives?

And what kind of community is that where a certain group of individuals will be given the best education and taught to think in a progressive way while the rest of the kids continue to be told to follow in the regressive ways of their ancestors? Won’t that create a huge gap between the kind of beliefs people will hold? Will the differences create a clash?

And while those girls are being empowered with knowledge, and the belief that they can do anything they put their minds to, what will the boys be learning? Will those boys be taught to lead life as their ancestors have? Will they easily give those girls who grow up to be women their rights?

As lylian pointed out, this is a grand experiment on Oprah’s part, but the question is, is it worth the risk or the consequences it will create. To tell you the truth, I’m not sure.

QQQQ what are you doing that is so prim and proper to help out mankind?I’m sure everyone will have everything positive to say about your good intentions.

YOUR BEST INTENTIONS CAN END UP BEING YOUR WORST ACCUSATION.

I’m not gonna like the show.. I aready know it. I loved this movie though.

I went to the newsweek article and they said that Angelina is “expected” to be there. My question: Says who? And they called Angelina The African Queen. Why?
In the same article a picture of Oprah has the caption that says “African Queen”. now which one is it? LOL!!!! here’s the link to the article:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16396343/site/newsweek/

the extreme makeover has to be dramatic for AUDIENCE. If they just build plain vanilla house, who’s gonna watch the show. No audience, no show, the show will be cancelled.

to me, i also think about “how to best allocate the resouces”, therefore, i feel building many many smaller schools will yield better results than just 1 grandeur school.

But any charity is good charity, it’s her money. she can do what she pleased. If i have that budget, i will do it differently.

Since the vogue interview from Angelina came out, Some people have argued that Angelina lured Brad by talking to him about her values, her beliefs etc. Too intimate…

Lylian,
I really loved your post and your insightful comments. I can imagine it happening the way you described it. Actually I had a similar experience. I was engaged to be married when I fell in love with a colleague who I got to know very well at work. We became very close friends and we did fight our feelings in deference to my fiance but in the end we decided to be honest about our feelings with each other. We did reach a point of this awareness that our seemingly innocent friendship was verging on the dangerous emotional attachment. But by then we both felt that we were too far gone with each other that we ended up eloping and getting married (and we are now married for almost 20 years!). I always have this guilt that I had changed and tranferred my affection so suddenly. I can speak from experience that one does not really fall in love with two people at the same time with the same intensity.

My fascination with Angie and Brad came partly from this experience. They have a deep and abiding affection for each other, share the same values and goals, and their love for their kids should ensure the longevity and success of their relationship.

I love your posts, and I agree with both of you, although in my previous post, I may sound like I don’t. I understand that Oprah may do a disservice to those girls by uprooting them, elevating them way above the people where they came from, with no warranty of them being accepted by the elite class of South Africa after their formation, and therefore making them into pariahs, not fitting anywhere. My hope is that the school will instill in them a very strong sense of duty towards their people and their country, otherwise they will just feel like their talent is going to waste, and they will end up migrating to first world countries instead of staying in Africa to help. I hope Oprah will expand her project to include education for more kids in Africa, not just South Africa. All in all, I haven’t given up on Oprah yet, even though I am not a fan of hers (if that could be possible).

Me- I feel you. Burden is nothing new to these girls. Through out the world some people are priviledge, some of these girls may no fare very, but some of them will. but i know for sure that this school is far better than the life they are living now. She cannot ruin their life anymore than the tradgedy they are living now. She can’t save all of them. All of these girls and many more have a deep desire to be educated. They will not take it for granted or squander it.

I knew this was going to happen. At first glance it’s easy to see how some TV execs could anyway. But putting aside the obvious (no Brad, no Angie) this will no doubt fail unless the creative forces behind the effort are inspired by the movie and are not exploiting the movie. Maybe then it might have a 20% chance of succeeding. Good examples are series like Smallville or Buffy. At any rate I don’t have any high expectations for whatever it is.

many vids from India, interviews, clips from many entertainment shows, etc.
It’s a really nice collection and it is updated almost daily, I thought I should share it with you, I have enjoyed it very much.

Thanks for the gorgeous stills from MAMS, Jared. No matter how many times I’ve seen this video, it’s always so hot watching these two. Count me in as someone who simply can’t imagine any other twosome generating the heat between them like B&A.

Lylian, great post re Angie’s Vogue interview on what happened between her and BP. ITA, poor Brad didn’t know that some people expected him to stay shackled forever to that ‘thing’ whether he wanted to or not.

I know I came across as a pessimist in my last post, but I agree with your comment above. I hope for nothing but the best for those kids and I recognize what Oprah is doing for them. While I wish the best for them and hope optimistically that Oprah’s contribution produces great results, I still can’t help be concerned. I hope I’m atleast allowed the right to be concerned without being accused of hating Oprah by others (not you).

QQQQ-As if you don’t like to argue.

Me-you are beautiful. Good night

Happy 2007 BAMZSers!! And thanks for the new thread JJ :-)

I’m totally cringing at the thought of MAMS on tv - I just can’t see it coming off anywhere near as good as the movie and will just make a joke out of a great movie that could have a great sequel. I’d rather wait for a sequel with B&A (if that is even being considered) than get a quick fix from a tv show. Who could they cast that would even compare??!! JMHO.

STRANGER - thanks for the link re: Shakira’s project - I’ll add it to my ‘Humanitarian” links and read it as soon as I get the chance. I really believe that the better educated we are about these issues in the world, the more we can do to help in a manner that is effective and efficient. I love BAMZS for their “Hollywood factor” but it is their humanitarian work that has truly captured my mind and heart.

I hope you all will join me in a resolution to become as educated as we can about these issues and to do OUR part in making a difference in this world - ONWARDS AND UPWARDS IN 2007! :-)

This is meant in general, not to any one particular person here:

One person cannot save the world. Things must be narrowed down. You cannot keep looking at what your neighbor does. Remember Michael Jackson’s song, “Man in the Mirror?” He’s saying that each person must look at himself and say, “What can I do?” Then do it.

To be honest, I get highly irritated when other people try to tell someone else how to spend his or her money. Everybody has an opinion. When someone is giving to charity, what right do you have to tell that person, “I think your charity sucks” or you shouldn’t spend your money there, you should be spending it here?” What if you had that money? I guarantee that you would not appreciate it one bit. It’s your money and you should spend it or donate it as you see fit.

That’s similar to people telling Brad and Angelina, “Don’t adopt in those third-world countries because there are plenty of of kids that need to be adopted in America.” I just cringe when people do that. What’s it to you?

As far as I’m concerned, people are too doggone nosy and opinionated. When it comes to helping someone else in need, how can that be wrong? It’s all helpful in some way, because it’s at least “something.”

Education is still the key to a better future for most people.

Curious Says: January 2nd, 2007 at 12:05 am - Like i said PEACE!!!!

And to this day Brad barely gets a slap on the wrist by haters but Angelina gets called all kinds of names and is accused of all kinds of publicity manuvering. I just came from a crazy site that had like dozens of posts of name calling for Angelina and Brad got barely 5 responses. Is it because he’s the bigger star that people let him “slide”?

Unless someone comes up with a more imaginative post, I probably won’t be posting on this thread on this subject again.

Again, I’m not questioning Oprah’s motives. Unlike some whiners about Brad and Angelina, I’m NOT saying she is only doing it for publicity or other unaltruistic reasons. I do believe her intentions are for the best. I believe she has the right to reach back into her childhood and from those experiences do what she believes is needed in building this school, it is her way of giving back. And I applaud her contribution to the lives of 152 girls. Never, in any thread, have I ever disparaged that contribution.

But what she is building is to some extent, experimental. These questions must be asked and not just because it is important to Oprah, but because it is important to South Africa and other third world countries. As Me says, what she does has consequences. We need to study the results and consequences. Will the 152 students become wonderful human beings - I believe they will be. But had that 40m been spread out to 5,000 students, would there be 4,000 wonderful human beings (following the 80:20 rule)? Studies on mass education will lead me to believe that there would be 4,000 wonderful human beings. Therefore, to make ECONOMIC SENSE, what Oprah does must have an equal or greater multiplier effect. And I believe Oprah herself - who is no fool, hopes that these girls will make a difference beyond the obvious. Oprah is a smart woman, I’m definitely willing to give her time to prove her vision.

Most charities - be it the Jolie Pitt Foundation or the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, start off on the premise that it is best to deal with issues which affect and benefit the most number of people. Hence the emphasis on basic child health, mass education, malaria vaccines etc. Which is why, Bill and Melinda Gates are not funding schools built at a lavish cost of 40m. Think about it, I don’t believe there is a school in US or UK or Australia, for 152 students, which is built for 40m. And 40m based on purchasing power parity in South Africa is worth much more then 40m in the US, UK or Australia.

=================================

No, it’s because of their pasts.

Angelina has done some OUTRAGOUS things in her past, and she’s been very OUTSPOKEN about certain aspects of her life. If you do that, you better be prepared to deal with the consequences.

I agree. How and where you give to charity wise, is no different than how you wear your clothes or what car you drive. It’s all about PERSONAL CHOICE. How you spend the honest money you’ve made is up to you. Usually, but not always, the charity of choice has some kind of personal connection to the giver.

lylian Says: January 2nd, 2007 at 12:19 am - Great Post….

Lylian-Why don’t you set the standard and come up with a more imagintive post. This way you can continue posting on what ever you like.

That list omits the fact that she won Golden Globes for “George Wallace” and for “Gia”, not just Emmy nominations.

I understand your points, believe me. But the truth remains that it is Oprah’s money. She wants a lavish school for these young girls, probably for somewhat personal reasons. She didn’t want to do it small. She wanted to do it big. She wants these girls to really LOVE their new school. When something is really nice like that, it may have a greater effect on them. It may give them a deeper sense of pride. I’m sure they will certainly be grateful.

We can all assume, but Oprah has a lot of wealthy friends, and I am sure she gets advice from them too. I’m sure she know she could get more bang from her buck, but that is not the point for her. In the end, she’s doing what she feels compelled to do, and the rest of us can only dream.
