OlderAngelina Jolie Reaches Sainthood
What would Angelina Jolie and her children — Maddox, Zahara, and Shiloh — look like depicted as saints, virgins, and cherubs? Kate worked out her own depiction of them on an 88′ x 60″ oil & acrylic on linen in a painting called “Blessed Art Thou.” Here’s how she describes the painting:
This painting addresses the celebrity worship cycle. The title, “Blessed Art Thou”, is taken from a line in the Catholic prayer “Hail Mary”: “…blessed art thou among women”. Our culture is deifying celebrities, but in the bible, it is the meek who are blessed, so the title presents a question for the viewer to ponder.
I chose a setting where the cycle begins: psychologically oppressive environments like this one are the source for the consumer, hungry for “information” about the celebrity. I am interested in the psychological ramifications of celebrity worship, particularly as they relate to class.
Angelina Jolie was chosen as the subject because of her unavoidable presence in the media, the world-wide anticipation of her child, her “unattainable” beauty and the good that she is doing in the world through her example, which adds another layer to the complicated questions about her “deification”.
The “Virgin” and Zahara figures are loosely based on a Van Dyck Virgin painting, and the Maddox figure’s pose is borrowed from a Raphael painting.
The artwork will be on display at the Chelsea Galleria booth at the Art Miami Fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center, January 5-8th. Kate will be at the fair Friday & Saturday.

I don’t shop at Walmart anymore. They have had too many lawsuits filed against them by their employees. I’ve known a handful of people who have worked at Walmart. EVery single one has complained about the way Walmart treats their employees. Walmart has benefits on the books, but they get out of paying most of them because they make sure that most of their enployees work part time and most benefits are for what they consider full time employees. I live in San Antonio so I have plenty of other options for places to shop.

This painting is really bad taste. Really Bad. But hey, at least it isn’t a depiction of her giving birth on a bear skin rug…..so it could be worse.
Also, WM *is* hell. I do have to agree with this artist on that. I haven’t shopped in a WM in over 5 years and don’t intend to ever give them another penny of my money.

I think that painting is one of the worst misuses of celebrity imagery ever. She may think she’s making a statement about the the deification of celebrities, but what she’s really doing is prostituting the images of Brad and Angelina’s children for fame, if not an immediate profit. Even if she doesn’t sell this painting or donates the money to charity, the free publicity she’s garnered from the project will ensure more PAID work for her in the future. She’s just another person making a buck off Brad and Angie, which wouldn’t be so annoying if she had left the children out of it.
Oh yeah…personally I love the Evil Empire that is Wal-mart. Especially the Supercenter. One stop shopping at it’s finest. There just aren’t too many places where you can do your grocery shopping while you’re getting your tires rotated and your oil changed.

I think the painting is supposed to be some kind of social satire, but it’s waaaaay too tacky for me to get really worked up about.
And I’ll try, for your sake, to say something positive about WM.
At least it lifts a person’s self-esteem to go there, because generally, if you are having a day where you feel particularly fat and ugly, well…… you’ll always see someone fatter and uglier than yourself at WM.
Sorry. That’s as nice as I can be on the subject of WM.

I was gonna give this very lecture but then i asked myself, why should I bother?…….if americans cannot “see which side their bread is buttered on” (as we say here in the tropics) and be made to act in their own interest then let them just sit there and in 20 years’ time, watch the chinese become the world’s next super power. I’m not anti-american, just anti-american stupidity. The ‘artist’ who has so blatantly exploited Ange and her kids wasn’t so much making a statement about them as much as she/he/it was commenting on the fat, lazy shop-til-you-drop types who pay no attention to the ubiquitous ‘made in china’ labels - and wont, until its too late. Someone on this board made a point recently about china buying up US treasury bills with all the money they make off you, via such places as walmart and wherever else in the US economy that made-in-china labels can be found. What happens when theyre ready to collect?
Add to this, the fact that children in public schools in the US are not making the best use of their education - ask oprah….certainly not like their asian counterparts, for example. So what quality workforce are you creating for the future? Why do you think so many IT jobs are now located in india? And its not only because they are cheaper, i can promise you that! You guys better wake up and smell the smokestacks in china thats burning so persistently and intensly that they can be seen from outerspace

Am one to admit when I’m wrong so sorry I thought you were commenting on the painting.
Same goes however–nudity does not equal pornography. I guess, like beauty, it’s in the eye of the beholder. Like jpf and DAMN, I think it’s a beautiful photo depicting a sense of freedom. Btw, animals have been used in a lot of photo shoots without it being labeled beastility. Something about the inherent wildness of animals fascinates photographers who want to capture that side by side with a model (Angelina used to be one)
I, too, love that picture of Angie and the horse. It’s beautiful, wild, and free. I’d love to have a poster size of it.

Just got back from my show’s hiatus and back in the swings and here we are!
Well I am conflicted by this painting. I don’t like kids painted in the buff and legally this woman should not have used the image of the BAMZS kids in such a manner. I wonder if Angie will sue?
On the other hand, I think this painting has double meaning. The Fanistons are the women at Walmart on the bottom and Angie rises above their red state mentality.
The women on the bottom are crying a river and holding pity parties and Angie and her charity rises above it. The painter may be poking fun at Angie’s celebrity but in the end Angie has the last laugh for she indeed rises above the Walmart Jenny Craig Faniston bunch.
You go Angie!

Good eye. I know exactly which one. It has the purpleish lighting I believe framing him, and the photo is of him from the lower torso. I said before a few times that it’s just one more thing Jolie-Pitt share. They’re very similar in that they each seem to know what the camera is looking for and they give it. They know how to convey a thought and idea so intuitively. Just look at the W layout, or the VOGUE photo of them. They may not do another movie together, but I think I’d prefer another photo essay instead.
