OlderAngelina Jolie Reaches Sainthood
What would Angelina Jolie and her children — Maddox, Zahara, and Shiloh — look like depicted as saints, virgins, and cherubs? Kate worked out her own depiction of them on an 88′ x 60″ oil & acrylic on linen in a painting called “Blessed Art Thou.” Here’s how she describes the painting:
This painting addresses the celebrity worship cycle. The title, “Blessed Art Thou”, is taken from a line in the Catholic prayer “Hail Mary”: “…blessed art thou among women”. Our culture is deifying celebrities, but in the bible, it is the meek who are blessed, so the title presents a question for the viewer to ponder.
I chose a setting where the cycle begins: psychologically oppressive environments like this one are the source for the consumer, hungry for “information” about the celebrity. I am interested in the psychological ramifications of celebrity worship, particularly as they relate to class.
Angelina Jolie was chosen as the subject because of her unavoidable presence in the media, the world-wide anticipation of her child, her “unattainable” beauty and the good that she is doing in the world through her example, which adds another layer to the complicated questions about her “deification”.
The “Virgin” and Zahara figures are loosely based on a Van Dyck Virgin painting, and the Maddox figure’s pose is borrowed from a Raphael painting.
The artwork will be on display at the Chelsea Galleria booth at the Art Miami Fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center, January 5-8th. Kate will be at the fair Friday & Saturday.

Hiya Gitane. How was your holiday? You know, your post got me thinking…maybe the reason why some people think AJ is trying for sainthood is because THEY can’t fathom why an ordinary person will go out of their way to help others.
I was under the impression that art was judged by each individual. You may interpret that it is neither anti or deifying, but I don’t agree with your interpretation anymore than you agree with anyone of our interpretations.
The fact that people come to a blog to critique the comments says a lot about them too. Obviously giggle you must have an interest in something or you wouldn’t be here putting your 2 cents in too.
OMG, people, it’s not that serious. This is some unknow artist trying to make money. You giving her what she wants, your time and your attetion.

Why the hell did she paint the kids without clothing? The painter is a crazy ass weird lady! I would be Pissed if I were B & A and some crazy ass painted my kids nude like that.

But there again when you are in the public eye as much as Angelina is with her kids this is bound to happen. Someone will take it upon themselves to come up with this messy picture of saintwood/virgin mary or whatever the hell this is supposed to be. I wonder who would even want to have this painting in their home though. Unless we are now worshipping idols. It does look like those Jesus pictures with him coming out of the clouds. But somehow I feel that this artist is painting what I have heard a lot of people going on and on about. The big deal with the adoptions etc. I guess this artist decided to put paint to paper. Others worship with pens and paper. Not much of a difference. In fact I thought the fans would be very happy and stress how beautiful she and those kids are. I wonder what is amiss this time.
I have to agree. Brad and Angie chose their careers, but Madd, Zee and Shi are children (minors) so their image should not be included in every harebrained scheme people think of (like Madame Tussaud’s wax image of Shiloh, now this painting). I wonder if they can legally be stopped

Why does Angelina have to be referenced to another person for the work she does. Implying that she is Mother Teresa, who is regarded as a saint, is taking away from Angelina’s own individuality and her own work. She isn’t trying to copy anyone, she gives and helps as she pleases!
Bono isn’t called the Pope, so why Angelina? This is frustrating. People should stop trying to tag Angelina with the Saint or Mother Teresa tag.
The people that are still mad at Brad for being with Angelina are the same people who can’t understand that he is human, not a sun god. He can do whatever he wants, make whatever mistakes he wants, say whatever he wants because is human.
Same with Angelina. The Mother Teresa or Saint tag implies that Angelina is trying sweep her past under the rug and be something she’s not. She has always acknowledged her past and made it clear that she has been self destructive in the past. That’s why people have a hard time letting go of her past. Because they think she’s trying to be some sort of Saint when she isn’t. So what if she had a wild past. A lot of people do.
The problem starts when Angelina and Brad are held to a different standard than others. Why should that be the case?

A real artist is not looking for money. A true artist is not a capitalist. They are willing to starve and die for their art. This is not art. It’s comic book or pop art illustration. The use of celebrity is proof of this. The use of the minors for monetary gain is in poor taste.
I’m glad we will have new pictures of Brad this weekend. This is just the begining for him. I’m very happy for him career wise as well as personally. Angelina has made him a very happy man by fulfilling all his dreams.
It is called controversy and it gets people to talking and reacting. AJ is seen as “saint” to those who want to criticize her and devalue her work. I see her as someone who has lived a varied and interesting life; dedicated to her Partner/ family; dedicated to her humanitarian work; and a good actress. The Painter in her misguided way and need for attention is trying to make a statement on pop culture.

i think the issue with this painting and frankly with the majority of celebrity haters is that “saint”, “god” and “idol” are controversial terms used to objectify celebrities and therefore belittle anyone who takes an interest in them. the complexity of human beings as individuals, their histories and their passions is diminished, easily pigeonholing them into a place where those who don’t agree or share their interests can condescend with impunity.

Moving to another subject, marriage. Why is everyone hell bent on seeing Brad and Angelina get married?
They said no they aren’t considering it, so why the push for them to get married. Over half of the population is not married, and half of all married couples get divorced in the USA. So why are so many wishing they get married and why all the tabliod stories about the “secret wedding”???
I was watching Showbiz Tonight and they are going to do a segment about 7 wishes for 2007. One of them is about couples they wish would get married and they showed Brad and Angelina.
Really, what is the fcuking problem. It’s one thing for everyone to give their opinion on these two, but what’s with the everyone demanding what they should or shouldn’t do. We can only comment, but from the tone from many people comes across as if though they think they have a right to have their voices heard regarding Brad and Angelina’s relationship.
Why does Angelina have to talk to her father? Why do Brad and Angie
have to get married? Why does a seven month old Shiloh have to be taken everywhere so the public can see her? Why does Zahara have to dress a certain way? Why does Maddox have to go to a school? Why can’t he have a tutor.
Sure, everyone has a right to comment, but it’s when the comments takes on a tone that Brad and Angelina have to do certain things because strangers deem it right, is when things get out of hand.

Here’s my interpretaion of the painting.
First, I don’t believe the artist is likening Angelina to a saint.
I believe the artist is illustrating a comparison of Angelina the international star, adoptioner, birth mother, screen goddess to the average American woman shopping in wal-mart, gossiping, overweight, doing blah everyday average things. Angelina is depicted as being above all these average things. Brad is not depicted because or no other men for the matter because the artist is speaking specifically to women. Notice the otheer women don’t have their children with them. Their children are some other place and not with them.
I believe artist is contrasting Angelina the mother to the average American mother. I keep referring to the American woman because of the American flag hanging and the Wal-mart itself.
Finally, I believe artist paints an adoring ode to Angelina for not being an average American mom for being above the casualness of daily shopping at Wal-mart.
I don’t see this as Saintifying Angelina at all. It just a contrast of Angelina and the average woman in America.
