Brad has tanned naturally, he has spent the last few weeks in Costa Rica and Panama, and he just came from the Caribbean where he was shooting Benjamin Button.

I remember when either 60 Minutes or one of the Prime TV Shows (20/20) did a report of the first set of Lost Boys coming to the US.

I cried so much that I made myself sick over their plight in life. And it was just anonther reminder to me to NEVER take things for granted.

‘God Grew Tired of Us’ tells the stories of young Sudanese refugees who came to the U.S. after escaping brutality in their homeland.

Refugee John Dau doesn’t mind being called a “Lost Boy,” even though he is no longer either. Dau is 33, recently married (to a “Lost Girl”) and a new father living in Syracuse, N.Y. He is, literally and figuratively, thousands of miles from the chaos of his youth in Sudan.

“My organization is American Care for Sudan Foundation. We have raised $170,000 already for the Duk County Lost Boys Clinic. We are sending seven volunteer Americans to Sudan next month to start building,” said Dau, who is also the director of the nonprofit Direct Change’s Sudan Project.

“His is an impressive story, an immigrant’s tale: coming to the U.S., working three jobs, saving as much money as you can, helping others,” said Christopher Quinn, director of the documentary “God Grew Tired of Us,” which opens next Friday and follows Dau and other Lost Boys from Sudan as they make their way from refugee camps to America. “He’s an amazing human being. It’s been incredible spending the last five years with him,” Quinn said.

That’s quite an evolution from the 13-year-old boy who fled his village in the middle of the night as Arab militias attacked.

“I was lucky, I got out,” said Dau. “I saw somebody running and thought it was my father. We ran that night through the water, the mud. When we saw militia, we ducked in the grass until they passed and then ran until daybreak. Then I realized it was somebody else, not my father; my neighbor.”

Thus began Dau’s journey as part of a generation to come of age without families and under siege. They fled on foot to Ethiopia and later to Kenya, without food, extra clothing or shelter. More than 20,000 children walked about 1,000 miles, half of their number dying along the way before the survivors found safety in a U.N. refugee camp.

“God Grew Tired of Us,” which won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, follows three of the 3,800 Lost Boys lucky enough to gain passage to America, including Dau. The film details their adjustment to a new culture while they keep one eye on Sudan, looking for relatives.

Quinn said one audience member had “expected to get a talking to about Sudan, but they came away with an appreciation for what’s really important in life — and they were struck by what they learned about America too.”

The documentary doesn’t dwell on the Lost Boys’ epic walk or the savagery of the militia attacks, but those events unquestionably shaped Dau.

“There was nothing to eat,” he said of the exodus to Ethiopia. “We’d chew some grass so we could stay alive. Sometimes there was no water, so some of us would eat mud; others would drink human urine. I’d rather forget that life.”

The refugees formed improvised families, with older boys such as Dau taking leadership roles. But even in the Ethiopian camp, starvation and epidemics forced grim duties on them as their younger charges died in large numbers.

“We had to take them to the cemetery, but there were no tools to dig deep,” he said. “By the time we came back the next day, we found they were eaten by hyenas and other animals. But there was nothing else we could do.” A 1991 coup forced the Lost Boys to flee once again, but as they headed for the border, Dau said they were fired upon by the new government’s troops. The survivors eventually reached the U.N. refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya, where they lived for several years. It was there that Quinn and his crew found the film’s subjects: boys granted the chance by the International Rescue Committee to start anew in America.

“John actually appealed to us, to help get his friends who he’d be leaving behind, to go to the U.S.,” said Quinn of meeting Dau in 2001, “so we knew he was a pretty special person.”

After running out of funds for the film, Quinn showed a rough cut to some friends, actors Catherine Keener and Dermot Mulroney, who along with TV writer Eric Gilliland were able to bring Brad Pitt into the fold. With the four producing and Nicole Kidman narrating, the documentary was completed.

“A woman who saw the film at Sundance said she went back to her hometown in Utah and found that [refugee] Somalis were living there,” said Quinn. “She got 50 volunteers organized and has been helping them with tutoring and day care. We had a viewing in a high school and the kids had a bake sale and raised money; they raised $1,000 for the Lost Boys clinic.”

Dau believes the economic power of ordinary citizens and the political and military leadership of the United States can force the Sudanese government to honor the current peace accord. It’s a message he travels to his new country to spread as the leader he has become.

“If the world lets us down, I don’t know if I could bother myself to say there is an international community,” he said. “I don’t know if I would want to live on Earth.

“Help us. Please. You are our only hope. Even if the U.S. don’t want to fight, this is the war you should fight. We are helpless.”

I saw this documentary on Darfur and one of the most chilling things they said on it was that girls as young as 3 years were raped by the militia and it had such an impact on me, it took me a week to stop thinking about the atrocities being committed there. I have a 3 yr old DD and i just hugged her tight and knew i was just blessed to be away from such horrible happenings in this world!

Oprah did a show last year on a 15 month old african girl who had been raped by 5 men. These bottom of the barrel scum ******* animals tore this baby up so bad that it took 7 surgeons over 12 hours to put her back together again. The doctors were so torn up by what had happened to this poor baby, they wept while peforming the surgery. I was very disappointed at the comment someone made on another thread about Ophrah being sexist for opening an all girls school. Right now the only hope girls and boys in africa have are people like Brad, Angie, oprah and other celebs. Neither our government nor theirs cares about them. God bless Brad, Angie and Oprah as well as everyone trying to make a difference in the lives of all the african people!

THE PRODUCTION

Christopher Dillon Quinn, a New York City-based filmmaker, was stunned by the media coverage he saw about the Lost Boys in early 2001, particularly a New York Times Magazine piece by journalist Sara Corbett. Hooked by the dramatic elements of an unfolding story, Quinn knew instinctively that he wanted to make a film about the boys and was fortunate to find $50,000 in seed money to get the project underway.

“By July of that year, we were in Kenya,” says Quinn.
Working with Molly Bradford Pace, who managed much of the shoot’s production from New York, Quinn teamed up with co-director Tommy Walker and a small film crew and traveled to Kenya’s Kakuma refugee camp, which was operated by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. They arrived to find a population of almost 90,000 people, of which 12,000 were considered to be “Lost Boys of Sudan.”

Housed in cinderblock huts at the UN compound, the filmmakers had few restrictions as they took their cameras into the crowds of refugees. Their particular focus was on the “Dinka” boys (the largest tribe in the southern Sudan) who would soon depart for the States under an International Rescue Committee program to resettle them in America. Quinn and Walker began honing in on those who had been selected to depart the following week.

“We immediately gravitated toward Daniel because he had started something called Parliament and what he was doing was amazing,” says Quinn.

Daniel Abol Pach, who, like most of the boys, had already been living in the Kenya camp for ten years, had emerged as a popular figure in the camp by gathering hundreds of fellow survivors under the shade of the trees and entertaining them.

There would be times when these boys and young men didn’t eat for 4 or 6 days – they would run out of food and when that happened, everything in the camp slowed down,” explains Quinn. “They would call those ‘the black days.’ But Daniel would gather hundreds of them under the trees and he would be entertaining people, keeping their spirits up.”

Since Daniel and his best friend Panther Bior had both been selected to go to the U.S., Quinn and Walker began to document their stories.
After shooting for a number of days, they found John Bul Dau. “Or rather he found us,” recalls Quinn. “John had found his name on the posted board for the U.S. move and he came to us because he had observed our cameras and thought we might be part of the American government.”

“He came to appeal on behalf of his friends that were not selected, he adds. “We were immediately taken with his selflessness.”

John, who fled the fighting in Sudan at the age of 13, was slightly older and much taller than the other boys, and had become a leader to more than 1200 other young boys who had escaped the slaughter.

To lend some historical context to the massive exodus of children, the Second Sudanese Civil War, which started in 1983, was one of the longest lasting and deadliest wars of the latter 20th century.

Approximately 1.9 million civilians were killed in southern Sudan, and more than 4 million were forced to flee their homes at one time or another since the war began. Although the war allegedly ended with the signing of a peace agreement in January 2005, the conflicts continue.

The young men selected for the trip in August of 2001 had never flown on an airplane, and they certainly had no idea about the people and events that awaited them.

“There were 90 guys who traveled on the plane but there was no one there to answer their questions besides the stewardesses,” recalls Quinn. “I think they felt that the film crew was part of the process so there was a myriad of questions and wonder, which often extended into telephone conversations later.”

From Kakuma to Nairobi and on to Brussels and finally New York, the boys traveled as a pack until they arrived at JFK International and broke up into small groups and headed for their respective cities.
Quinn stayed on the road with the subjects for the first three weeks, accompanying Daniel and Panther to Pittsburgh and John to Syracuse, witnessing the culture clash that greeted the boys in their new homes.

The learning curve was steep as volunteers from the community introduced John, Panther and Daniel to household items and American customs. From refrigerators, lamps and alarm clocks to shaving cream and donuts with sprinkles, the everyday objects that Americans take for granted were a baffling new discovery for young men who had lived with next-to-nothing in a refugee camp.

For Daniel and Panther, a trip to the local supermarket in Pittsburgh was a surreal experience. These two young men, who had survived on only minimal food in the camps, now encountered a bounty of produce that they could hardly comprehend.

“You can imagine their shock when they observed an entire aisle full of dog and cat food,” says Quinn somberly. “It was quite an experience.”
Quinn also recalls an evening in which a local family took Daniel and Panther out to dinner.

Quinn stayed on the road with the subjects for the first three weeks, accompanying Daniel and Panther to Pittsburgh and John to Syracuse, witnessing the culture clash that greeted the boys in their new homes.

One year into America, John was working full shift at a factory, and working a second job at McDonalds at night. Daniel was processing checks for Mellon Bank on a night shift and Panther was a bus boy at a large downtown hotel. However, the boys faced an increasing sense of loneliness and isolation, observing that Americans work such long hours that they often have limited time for family and friends.

At a reunion for Lost Boys in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the cameras are there to record the joy of rediscovered friendships, but they also observe the juxtaposition of the old Dinka traditions and the modern American culture that now dominates their lives. Dancing and talking with each other, the meetings prove invaluable for maintaining cultural ties and planning financial support for the community of friends and family back in Africa.

Working through channels of the International Red Cross and other relief agencies, many of the young men began to make inquiries about family members whom they had not seen for more than a decade. To his amazement, John Bul received a letter informing him that his father, mother, three brothers and three sisters were alive and living in Uganda.

“When I got the news, I jumped up!” says John. ‘I don’t believe my ears or my eyes.”
As the months pass, the filming continued and the stakes got higher for Quinn and his colleagues.

“I was one of those filmmakers who put everything on his credit cards,” admits Quinn candidly. “I put cameras and film stock on it and I dumped my entire life into it. At one point, I had to face the fact that I was $50-60,000 in debt. But none of it really ever mattered to me, in a way, because I was also so fixed on the guys and their story that I evolved quite a bit through the process. They had a profound effect on how I looked at the world.”

Producer Molly Bradford Pace, who helped keep the production afloat by tag-teaming and sharing duties with her colleagues, explains, “I got involved because I wanted to work on a project that was fulfilling to me and that was about something I thought was important. I learned from the three boys that the essence of every human being is the same, no matter his or her background

After four years of shooting, Quinn felt he had found an ending for the documentary when John Bul was not only able to find his family living in a Ugandan refugee camp, but he was able to bring both his mother and sister to live with him in the United States, completing a circle that had been broken by the terror of the Sudanese war.

But financially, the documentary team had run low on resources and it looked as if they would need to shut down the edit.

At that point, a stroke of good fortune propelled the project forward. Quinn asked his friends, actors Catherine Keener and Dermot Mulroney to look at a rough cut of the film. Touched emotionally by the film that had been assembled, she suggested that Nicole Kidman, who was also starring in “The Interpreter,” take a look at the film, as she would be an ideal narrator. Keener and Mulroney suggested that Quinn send it to their friend Brad Pitt to take to take a look at an early cut in Los Angeles.

After viewing a rough cut, then nearly a year later, the final cut, Kidman was on board to voice the narration that Quinn would write, and Pitt not only volunteered financial support, but also lent his name to the project, which resulted in the team being able to secure the private financing needed to complete the film.

There’s no question that their support gave us a huge jolt,” explains the director.

Back in the cutting room in New York City, Quinn worked diligently with editor Geoff Richman for the better part of a year to find the dramatic narrative in hundreds of hours of footage.

Once Nicole Kidman completed her narration, the four and a half year project had come to a satisfying end.

“What I find remarkable about this film is that it communicates the incredible optimism and resilience that the Lost Boys share, despite the suffering and sadness they knew for so many years,” says Kidman. “When John, Daniel and Panther are given the opportunity for a fresh start in America, they have the option to put the past behind them, but instead, they work two or three jobs in order to send money back to Africa. Their friendships are sacred.”

In January of 2006, five and half years after the filmmakers were introduced to the Lost Boys in Kenya, GOD GREW TIRED OF US was accepted into Competition at the Sundance Film Festival.
“We went to Sundance as free agents and the experience became both exciting and daunting,” recalls Quinn.

Winning both the Grand Jury Prize as well as the Audience Award, Quinn and the production crew were elated with their success, which they were able to share with John, Daniel and Panther, who joined them in Utah at the festival.

John Bul, who had begun a non-profit organization to raise funds for those left behind in Sudan, had the opportunity to speak to audience members at a Q&A following the film in Park City. He told them of his plans to raise funds for a medical clinic in his home county of Duk, Sudan, which would be the first hospital in that county “since God created the earth.” Following a screening, a woman approached with her checkbook and asked how she might make a contribution. Rumor Has It was on Cinemax, so I checked it out for as long as I could stand it. I can’t imagine how people in theaters didn’t run screaming into the streets, begging for eyewash to cleanse their pupils from the horror of seeing an enormous X on a huge movie screen. Even Shirley MacLaine looked better than X. Hell, KEVIN COSTNER looked better than X. Poor Mark Ruffalo, who I like, had to do some heavy lifting as X’s bereft, heartbroken, lovesick boyfriend; I imagine he vomited in his trailer after every scene. Aside from her looks, X had two expressions: A wrinkled, perturbed brow, or a blank stare. I heard she was making this movie when she and Brad broke up, and she did look miserable–maybe she was thinking about her red-carpetless future as ex-Mrs. Pitt. Anyway, BAMZS fans, I watched RHI –so you don’t have to.

Oh my Heavens! Now I believe in cosmic balance….these pictures definately, definately balances out the c r a p we had to deal with yesterday….and the day before….and the day before the day before…aah, you get my drift.

Jeez! How insanely beautiful are they? You know, as one of the few who had doubts about them walking the red carpet together (coz I thought the red carpet things was sooo golden couple) I feel I should be smacked for even thinking BP and AJ walking the red carpet will be anything like the other one. My God! They are beautiful (I know I said that already….but they are). Seeing Nicole Kidman with BP kinda sent a shiver down my spine….I can’t help it…. imagining what could have been. Yikes! *AG to self* Don’t even go there…..don’t go there.

After, seeing these Pix, I now have an attitude of “Let them say….whatever” (The Fanistons, The “Not a Fanistons”). Yep, it’s gonna be really hard to take anything they say seriously….come on, we know where it’s coming from. So, say whatever…
They are not happy, they are only pretending….BP dragged her there with a rope and if you look closely at picture #1723, you can clearly see the rope under his jacket. AJ only came with him after she heard NK was gonna be there, she knows BP has an eye for NK and anyone can clearly see in pix #1720, that BP is looking at her with lust, AJ looks mad because the title of the movie has GOD and we all know she does not believe in God. Like, I said….say whatever. They know their TRUTH.

God, I hope this person is not given an audience because that’s clearly what the want. I just finished on the last thread….and if hers isn’t the most pathetic attempt at attention seeking, I don’t know what.

It’s great to see the couple out and about. They are now completely established professionally, personally, and PUBLICLY. I like these two that they are DOers, not just talkers. They really get things done as they plan and they will talk about it afterwards if they chose to. No empty promises, no hypothetical romance and hypothetical break-ups.

I completely get it AG, and we’ll just have to remind ourselves not to be sucked in next time. From now on, unless it comes directly from their mouth and I see them say it, or it is a legit interview with NEW pictures, then I simply am not buying it.

The GG’s are going to be specatacular, and I can’t wait!

Make that “spectacular”, not speca-tacular, even though I am sure B&A can easily put another syllable in that word, haha!! They have done it with gor-gee-ous, so why not speca-tacular?

I think they looklike crap! Shes so skinny &hardly ever smiles. She justs never looks happy with him. Maybe more like controlling. JMO.
