Zahara’s birth name is actually Tena Adam, based on the local Amharic language’s name for Ruta (a green spice used in Ethiopia to flavor coffee). Her mother, Mentewabe Dawet Zowda, 22, died just three days after giving birth to her, from heavy bleeding, according to Zahara’s grandmother, Almaz Blfnhe.

Almaz lived with her three grown daughters, including Mentewabe, in the sun-baked town of Awassa, 138 miles south of Addis Ababa, surviving on earnings of $9 a month. Their house is a ramshackle one-room shack with a leaky tin roof and crumbling, cracked walls, without a phone or electricity, and just a kerosene stove on the front lawn for cooking.

Almaz helped deliver the baby. “I was there helping when Mentewabe was giving birth. Tena Adam was born screaming with her eyes already open. She was a beautiful girl with a small patch of dark hair,” she added.

When Mentewabe started bleeding afterwards, the family had to borrow 30 cents to hire a horse and cart to take her to the hospital; she died along the way. “I was so happy to have her back but now I have lost both of them,” Almaz said as tears trickled down her wrinkled face.

Almaz slept in a grubby bed with her infant granddaughter for four months, before finally deciding she was too poor to raise the child. The baby’s father is unknown. The baby was 4 months old, and weighed a meager 11 pounds, when she was put up for adoption.

Giving her away “broke my heart,” says Almaz, a softly spoken and frail woman, whose gnarled hands and bent back make her appear far older than her 45 years. “No woman wants to give away her own flesh and blood. Each day I would be in tears as I took her to the adoption office. They would send me away. But they eventually realized I did not have the money, and they took her from me and said they could give her a better life.” Almaz, who is unable to read or write, says she has never heard of the Mr. & Mrs. Smith star — but adds that her greatest hope is that one day Jolie will send her a photograph of her thriving granddaughter, who she says closely resembles her deceased mother. “All I ask is that one day Ms. Angelina could send me a picture of my granddaughter so I can remember her and those beautiful big brown eyes, they are just like my daughter’s eyes.”

Jolie officially adopted Zahara on Wednesday, July 6, with officials rubberstamping the adoption at a 20-minute hearing at Ethiopia’s federal high court. “Normally we like prospective parents to stay in the country for a couple of weeks so they can understand the culture but Zahara is very young so it doesn’t matter that she left only a few days after meeting Ms. Angelina,” said adoption head Hadish Holefom, from the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.

The adoption, and the subsequent renaming of the child, ended a month-long process during which Angelina reportedly paid out a standard adoption fee of about $10,000 and quietly maneuvered through red tape. Over the last two weeks, Jolie, Pitt and Maddox — whom Jolie adopted in 2002 — secretly flew into the impoverished African nation twice, staying in a $3,814-a-night four-bedroom suite at the five-star Sheraton hotel, just outside Addis Ababa. Brad accompanied her on the second trip, where they picked up the baby, according to eyewitnesses.

In truth, Angelina was lucky to get the child. The day before Zahara — then Tena Adam — was taken to Addis Ababa, an adoption official in her hometown was going to take her. Says Sosina Yeman, 33, who works at the social affairs office in Awassa: “She was such a beautiful thing. As soon as I saw her I thought about adopting her. When I came back to the office the next day, she had already been taken. I have been thinking about her ever since, but I suppose I could have never offered her the life she will have now.”

Hey everyone, I kind of stayed clear from the GG on … it was just too much going on. I’m glad Jolie-Pitt are carrying on with their lives and Mad is in French immersion class!

#221: Maybe her next procedure is to get her eyes positioned not too close to the nose because a thin nose might only bring it closer together. She does have nice eyes though.

Now when she gets a thinner nose, she might want to get fuller lips (as Cliniqua stated) to complete the ensemble and a queenly sweep of a jaw. She’d be like BBT’s ex who I think has had procedure to look like Angelina. She says it’s because she’s got a condition but saw her pics before and after on ET and it’s uncanny how her lips has swollen to its current size.
