Angelina Jolie in Chad

During a visit to the Oure-Cassoni camp in eastern Chad, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie listens to refugee women from the Darfur region in Sudan. CLICK HERE to find out why Angelina Jolie is visiting this camp!

UPDATE :: Read Angelina Jolie’s article about “Justice for Darfur.” The first line reads, “Here, at this refugee camp on the border of Sudan, nothing separates us from Darfur but a small stretch of desert and a line on a map.”

Angelina Jolie visits camp in Chad to assess situation for Darfur refugees
By Matthew Conway in Bahai, Chad

BAHAI, Chad, February 27 (UNHCR) – UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie on Tuesday completed a two-day mission to a refugee camp in eastern Chad which enabled her to assess how the security situation has deteriorated for Sudanese refugees since her last visit to Chad three years ago.

Jolie, who visited both Chad and neighbouring Sudan’s Darfur region with UNHCR in 2004, said she was struck by the sense of hope she encountered at the Oure-Cassoni camp near this town and by the widespread desire for peace-keepers to be deployed in Chad.

She also reflected on the hardship and suffering she had seen at the camp, which is located less than five kilometres from the border with Sudan. “It’s always hard to see decent people, families, living in such difficult conditions,” she said. “What is most upsetting is how long it is taking the international community to answer this crisis,” Jolie added.

The award-winning actress had to travel through a sandstorm on Monday to reach the Oure-Cassoni camp, which with a refugee population of more than 26,000 is the northernmost of 12 UNHCR-run camps in eastern Chad housing more than 230,000 refugees from Sudan’s troubled Darfur region.

She was greeted at one of the camp’s many primary schools by singing children as the desert wind whipped against the plastic sheeting serving as the structure’s roof and walls. The encroaching sands and storms make their hard life even tougher, with many of the tents and mud-brick houses partially or completely buried. Wood for cooking and heat is scarce in the region, and competition for the resource causes friction between the refugee and local populations.

Refugee women are sometimes sexually and physically abused while out collecting the precious scraps of firewood beyond the protection of police provided by the Chadian government to help ensure refugee security.

At the school, Jolie listened to children’s tales of daily life, their concerns and their hopes of one day returning to their homes in Darfur. The room was filled with laughter as she and the children took turns drawing for each other. She later visited mentally ill refugees.

On Tuesday, Jolie visited a man-made reservoir that feeds the camp with water, but which is now almost empty following disappointing rains last year. Its shrinking reserves are a matter of concern for the refugees and UNHCR.

She then sat down with a group of women and discussed their desire for access to income-generating activities as well as their longing to return home. But the women, who were preparing celebrations for International Women’s Day on March 8, said it was still not safe enough across the border and many of the refugees she spoke to supported calls for a peace-keeping force in Chad.

In a report last week to the United Nations Security Council, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon proposed sending a multi-dimensional peace-keeping mission to Chad to protect civilians and deter cross-border attacks.

The refugees Jolie talked to also drew comfort from recent radio reports saying that the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) had told the Security Council it had credible evidence of grave crimes against humanity committed in Darfur.

“Today, many refugees seemed to have a new sense of hope, and they want to see those guilty brought to trial . . . In order to feel safe enough to return home, these people said they would need to know that the men who attacked them had been stripped of their weapons,” Jolie said. “This is a very important day for international justice. The decisions of the ICC could make a big difference in the lives of these women and their children.”

Jolie had high praise for the UNHCR staff and NGO workers that she met in the camp. “Years into this situation, now finding themselves coming under attack, humanitarian workers’ spirits are unbroken,” she said.

There are more than 230,000 refugees from Sudan in eastern Chad, while some 46,000 refugees from the Central African Republic have found shelter in southern Chad. In addition to these refugees, close to 120,000 Chadians are displaced in the eastern region of their own country.

I hope she is safe too. I think she will raise a ton of awareness for this horrible situation upon her return.

On a lighter note, PH had the cutest pics of Shi and Z today on his site. I also think its ADORABLE that Brad’s mom came to help out while mom was away.

Too cute!

Guli- I will celebrate with my water!

Angelina never fails to amaze me. She is truly a caring and compassionate person who all of us would do well to emulate by finding a way in our lives to reach out and help someone who needs some assistance. We all share this planet and when some suffer we all suffer in the long run. Angelina understands this.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith @ 02/27/2007 at 8:06 pm

Thanks Jared for this. As I said before she really is an inspiration to me with all that she does and I just love her fearlessness in going to these places and bringing awareness. May God bless you Angie and don’t ever let anyone bring you down. Have a safe trip back home.

Angie is truly amazing. I hope she is able to bring much needed attention to the plight of the refugees at Darfur. I believe that her trip was set to coincide with the ongoing trials at the Internation Criminal Court against the principal perpetrators of the genocide in Darfur that is being reported now.

This woman is so devoted and dedicated to her mission. Nothing will stop her. I hope that she will always be strong and healthy to carry on and all these people who suffer every day to benefit from her great efforts. Way to go Angelina Jolie!

And now that her mission is over I wish her a safe return back to her family in NOLA!!

Someone I know must have missed her a bit.. ;)

WOW! What a brave woman. I pray that God will keep her safe and bring her home to her family in good health. Thanks JJ. Your site is inspiring. BTW Creative who is PH who has pictures os Z and Shi? Wow, I just opened up the old thread now there is a new one, I will just skip the old one. Thanks JJ, you’ve been working hard today.

Angie, we are praying for your safe return home.

Angelina follows the beat of a different drummer. A better drummer to be sure. While all other stars and mini stars wanted to be a part of the Oscars, she was traveling in behalf of the UN to follow a cause for humanity. She obviously takes this job very seriously and fearlessly. You cannot help but admire her strength and deep belief to help the less fortunate.
And no I didn’t watch the Oscars. Our Lightning hockey team was playing and that always takes precedence over anything and yay we won!! :D

Angie is simply an amazing women. What an inspiration to us all!

Guli- at 9 months they were eating more solids, such as crackers al la Z, they were pulling up and creeping a little bit when holding on to something, their personalities were very obvious, they had a few words like da da and mama, they wanted to be in on the action and hang out instead of sleeping, they had about 4 teeth, those are the biggies I can remember. It’s probably a true guess to say the Shi probably is saying dada and mama. How cute is that!! And that is probably why she was staring at Z’s cracker too. Dang she’s cute.

Hello everyone . . . hope everyone’s having a great evening.

If Shiloh is just getting to trying solid foods, it is probably the reason why in recent the photos, she is eyeing Z’s cracker with such intensity. Shiloh probably hasn’t been given crackers yet since the adults are afraid she’s not ready for them so she’s perplexed why Big Sis Z appears to be chomping on something that Shiloh has never had.

Hello to all, especially to:

- Alexanderina (belated happy b-day),
- Guli (saying hi before you go for your hiatus in Turkey),
- Curly (curious about your project that you mentioned in previous threads),
- African Girl (always a big fan of your post),
- MF (how’s your grandson?),
- 4Q (how are you coping so far with NY winter?)
- And others (long day at work working with psychotic patients – I tend to get a moment of dementia myself!!!!).

Anyway, today I thought I will unlurk, (if that’s even a proper term) - just one post to share my two cents opinion about the controversy among the fans here at JJ.

Let me make a leap here – I am assuming that majority of the Jolie-Pitt fans that are posting here are adults and mature individuals. So, I just thought that perhaps, we all need some breather, and come to our senses, so that we can remind ourselves that as adults, there are certain expectations on how we should behave in public, especially in stating our opinion. Yes, this is a public blog, which is more reason why we, as adult should observe proper decorum in handling ourselves. Just because we are all hiding under a made-up names, under the privacy of our own space, it still does not justify our “hysteric attacks” against each other over “trivial” things (I’m using the word “hysteric” and “trivial” as a matter of perception).

I must say, that I respect and understand everyone’s opinion here, although I may not agree to some at times. The reality is, we all stand by our conviction, and we can all argue until the end of time, that our individual opinion is correct. But at the end, no one will win (after-all, this is not a contest).

Ultimately, it is really up to us, as individual thinker, to decide what position we take (depending on our values and philosophy). And at some point, there has to be some individual accountability in maintaining boundaries and conduct of appropriateness. I will spare everyone here of my tedious lecture (which I tend to do, considering that in my line of work, it’s what I do all day).

But seriously, the only way that we can all agree, is to focus our energy, more on the positive that this family (the Jolie-Pitt) inspires us - not just because their talented artists, and they have beautiful children, but because they are great human beings (who are also like us, who goes through challenges and disagreements, and hopefully, are able to sort it out, like any mature grown ups) – that’s why we adore them.

As fans/admirers of this beautiful family, we should all unite, and be proud

Good Post

Definately agree with you. Good observation. I happen to love the ending that was used in the release, because I think that when you watch them in that last scene, I truly think that they had fallen head over heals for each other. The first time I watched it at home, I hit reverse about 15 times to hear Brad say “Ask the question about sex again” and then to see his non-verbal answer sent me some Bradley shivers through me.

because it’s the same clothing as the last pic when Z was in her mother’s arm, i wonder if may be they dropped off Z to a neighbor for play group. if that’s the case, Angie must have plenty of time with Shi. so instead of her carrying Shi, she is letting Brad have his turn.

Maybe she wants just Z’s cracker, no other one will do.

Hi Sheri and all the rest of the BAMZS fans tonight….When did we plan this cyber wine/sprite/water get together? Did we do it on Z’s birthday?

Glad to share the evening with you. I had never seen the entire THS on Angelina and am really surprised at all the public comments that Jon Voight made about her and her life choices. He seems to not be able to filter what is appropriate to say about someone else’s life to the camera, especially about your own daughter.
Angie was stunning as a young woman. I just love the way she talks about Mad, right after she adopted him. Such an honest woman about how she feels, which is what I respect about her. No publicist to run interference for her!

Hope all is well with you.

So what…she’s always scribbling in some f*&*ing spiral notebook.

Still doesn’t touch Oprah’s 40 million and lifetime commitment to education nor Paul Newman’s 120 million so far to charities nor Bill Gates $258 million to fight malaria nor Bono’s 724 million funding for AIDS in Africa.

Your point of view lacks perspective. Angelina is only 31, and I suspect that by the time she reaches the age of Oprah, Paul, Bill and Bono she will have accomplished as much, if not more, than what they have.

But what you really seem to miss is that this isn’t a competition and that each contribution is just as valuable, regardless of the dollar amount.

Also, I’ll think you’ll find that many people who travel to do this kind of work take notes, not just Angelina.

Since you’re so high and mighty, what have YOU done lately?

Insider,
according to your post, the amount of money defines the goodness of the deed.
That’s a very materialistic, not to mention shallow and flawed, way of measuring goodness.

But, following your idea, how good are you then?
Because it seems like goodness to you starts at 40 million.
How far are you from goodness, dear?

I’m sure others on this blog can enlighten you more on all she does if you are really interested. Not dissing Oprah because Oprah at least attempts to do some good, but she has far more money and resources, but you know what…Angie is much more efficient at doing good with her money and resources. If you actually look, you will find that Angie doesn’t just throw money at a problem, she researches the problem and spends her money wisely on solutions that may actually have long term affect.

He is not a healthy man to have around kids. Angie is right!

I also raised my sons to volunteer with seniors, Boys and Girls Clubs or at homeless shelters so that can understand that we may not have much. But there was always someone worse off than us. I was raised the same way and I hope that whenever my sons have children they do the same.

I think that Shiloh will look much like Brad as an adult. He was a “pretty” man when he was younger (much handsomer now to me as he has matured). Brad looks a lot like his mom, and Shiloh also looks like her grandmother Jane Pitt. All three have the same eyes and nose. Shiloh’s bottom lip looks more like Brad’s than Angelina’s to me. Of course this is all a guess based on looking at pixs of a 9 month old baby, LOL.

Angelina always respects the customs and cultures of the people she visits as seen in the pix above. She listens and notes their concerns so that she can accurately convey them. Any intelligent person would take notes to ensure that what one heard in a chaotic situation such as a refugee camp located close to where a war is raging is correct.

So funny. If Angie had been in the photograph she would have been accused of denying her birthed baby in favor of the adopted one!

Oprah is one of the richest woman on earth. she can give as much money as she wants but is still nothing in comparison to what Angie contributes. Angie has a family to take care of yet still manages to spend time with these refugees, drawing attention to this cause which will help them in the long run. Angie does both by donating money, spend time with them and helping them rebuild their life as she did in Costa Rica. Oprah has no other responsibilities except her career.

Too true. Some folks are really stretching and desperately searching for any reason to vent something negative and critical where Angelina is concerned. The pixs of the beautiful baby girls were a bitter pill, but to see grandmom Jane Pitt loving her granddaughters has driven some over the edge. Remember, some of the deluded its still think that Jane Pitt communicates on a regular basis with _____ even after _____ went negative on Jane Pitt’s son in a misguided attempt to make his life miserable. Jane Pitt loves her son, wants him happy, and sees how happy he is now. _____ does not know and cannot relate to how a mother feels about her children because she has no children.

I despise it when people compare others. The people at the otherend dont care if it is a personal hand is extended, or if it comes throught other channels. Its not right. Until the critic can criticize with a straight face, they shouldnt be keeping tabs on what the THINK another is doing or not. I love Angie and I think she would agree.

Angie heart and truth about herself proved out over what they saw on the outside in the media and such and by her own mouth at times. I wont presume to know Mr & Mrs Pitts mindset about the past now but my gut saying that they finally after how they see Brad experience life now, they have seen the past more clearly and not through even the rose colored lensess they child once did maybe. silly J.H. @ 02/27/2007 at 10:22 pm

Oprah is fifty years old. She traveled many times to Africa before starting this school. Was she just having a photo shoot? Did her appearance mean nothing? Your point are stupid and say more about your ability to see the bigger picture. Maybe you should take a clue from Oprah and be thankful to all people who try and help their fellow human beings.

One more thing. How do you know what Angelina’s appearance means to those refugees.

OK, it’s obvious you don’t know about the large amount of money Angelina has donated by herself over the years (Bill O’Reilly on Fox documented that she did), and the millions she and Brad have now donated through the Jolie Pitt Fondation. Please take the time in the future to educate yourself about an issue/subject/people before you open your mouth and put your foot in it. Ignorance is no defense when knowledge is readily available.

Raising awareness is important. A lot of times, many world projects require funding. The UN is always short on funding. Many different projects ask for assistance. But with Angie’s press coverage, it may make the refugee camp easier to get more funding or at least the UN will NOT CUT funding . I am sure there will be more allocation of resources to these camps in the future.

This is not an easy solution. You cant expect the refugee problem to go away in 1 year or even in 5 years. You remember, when Angie visited the Costa Rica bakery, it is a testament of how successful the “micro credit ” program is. So, for what Angie does, it does lead to result.

You cant use Oprah’s school as a standard to measure how successful Angie’s UN work is. Oprah has a different approach. Angie has hers. Both are doing things to help.

Angie does give 1/3 of her income to charity.

Wow, reading all the above posts re Angie’s UNHCR activites make me so in awe of this 31 year old. And the fact that she is inspiring all the other actresses/celebrities to do good too, is beyond awesome. No wonder Brad looks so content — he has his baby girl, and such an incomparable baby momma. RE: Oprah comparison …

If memory serves me, it was Bono (then Ms. Jolie) that brought an “international” spotlight on countries like Africa. I happen to see Oprah’s show last night about, her new school, and I “applaud” her for all that she has done with her wealth. Not to mention, Bill & Melinda Gates. Now, just imagine if how much good all of their money could do if THEY gave 1/3 of thier earnings to the “various” organizations supported by Ms. Jolie’s income (compared to thiers).

This is meant in general, not to any one particular person here:

One person cannot save the world. Things must be narrowed down. You cannot keep looking at what your neighbor does. Remember Michael Jackson’s song, “Man in the Mirror?” He’s saying that each person must look at himself and say, “What can I do?” Then do it.

To be honest, I get highly irritated when other people try to tell someone else how to spend his or her money. Everybody has an opinion. When someone is giving to charity, what right do you have to tell that person, “I think your charity sucks” or you shouldn’t spend your money there, you should be spending it here?” What if you had that money? I guarantee that you would not appreciate it one bit. It’s your money and you should spend it or donate it as you see fit.

That’s similar to people telling Brad and Angelina, “Don’t adopt in those third-world countries because there are plenty of of kids that need to be adopted in America.” I just cringe when people do that. What’s it to you?

As far as I’m concerned, people are too doggone nosy and opinionated. When it comes to helping someone else in need, how can that be wrong? It’s all helpful in some way, because it’s at least “something.”

Education is still the key to a better future for most people.

Funny that the publication said that the girls are with their nanny, in the pic of them with their grandmother Jane.

Anywho, it is just good to be back with the intelligent bloggers her on JJ. I went over to Perez, and all I read ws hate and ignorance. I usually don’t go over there, I just went because I read there were some pics of Zee and Shi.
***********************************************************
Hey there, with two glasses of Pinot under my belt, I went there too tonite. Can you believe how bigoted and idiotic people there sound? Did you notice that one post from “edumacated’? He’s been there for a long time, fighting the fight. I should invite him over here.

I had said the same thing you did, that it feels good to come back home with the bloggers with some intelligence, wit, rational thoughts, facts and passion to defend the JP’s.

That is why I call it the Evil Sea of Perez! Glad we’re back here…

I love the way Shiloh is looking up at her grandma from the stroller.

Susie, what number is my post that showed up with yours? Jared are you having fun with the women who are drinking wine tonight? LOL

Mrs. Smith @ 02/27/2007 at 11:21 pm

Thanks Jared, for the new thread about Angie’s UNHRC visit to Chad. She is totally AWESOME! INSPIRING! So proud to be her fan.

BTW, what’s the occasion for the party?

Dirty Denise…girl you got guts posting at Perez Hilton. Most posters there are lunatics & paid trolls by Huvanistons. Remember…Huvane & Co. & maybe Anuston herself read the posts there. I am sure the X friends are posting there too.

Guli- oh yes, the shoe battle. My kids still don’t always wear their shoes, we go barefoot alot. It is so annoying thoughwhen they need them and for some reason it is a pain in the a– to get them on them and as soon as they are in the carseat (not a Britney either) they rip them off. Thank go for velcro and Uggs.

Lucy- I do believe Bill & Melinda Gates gave a couple of billion to their fund for helping with vaccinations, aids, water, micro loans, etc. with most of it being directed towards Africa, and lets not forget Warren Buffett who donated almost his entire fortune in conjunction with the Gates fund.

Izzie- Drunk blogging is probably safer than drunk dialing which I have been guilty of in my life.

Sheri - I would love to, but have to leave at 11:30 - we have an inspection from the Feds and the State in the morning and I have to appear to be clear headed to be ready for a “record inspection”. I work at a hospital and we need to pass this inspection in order to keep our doors open. Sounds dramatic, but someone complained that we restrained a patient without cause and knew the agencies to contact, hence the Feds and State visit.

I’ll be on tomorrow from work after my part of the inspection is over. We got plans to make for our upcoming parties… Enjoy your evening. It was fun tonight, despite the low turnout…much more intimate.

Chad is a very poor country, war going on in and around its borders, doubt if a five or four or three or two or one star hotels by whatever your standards are even exists in the whole country. Angelina had to travel through a sandstorm to reach the remote camp. I have actually been in a few and nothing prepares you for the sand hitting you and stinging and the near sandout/blackout of light. It can be a frightening experience. She then stayed in a refugee camp, sharing the primative conditions that the residents have to live in each day. She also pays all her own expenses.

Sorry. I tried.

I’ve never been to FF, but have read the comments in Perez Hilton.

Dirty Denise, Izzie,Sheri and any others who venture to engage some of those people: may the force be with you!

What I find fascinating about the internet is that we’re forced to become more aware of the different types of mentalities that exist in this world. I mean let’s face it - it’s possible to live your lives whereby the people you work with, socialize with, etc. think and look and act like you.

A place like Perez forcibly reminds you that the world is filled with the good the bad and the ugly.

I honestly think that, while the regulars here obviously don’t look or act alike, there is a certain commonality or sense of values (?)(other than being BAMZS fans) that we share.

It would be fascinating if one day we had a convention (like the trekkies do). I’m sure we’d be amazed.

kk1 - are you still there? Where did you stay in a sandstorm?

Altoids Addict @ 02/27/2007 at 11:56 pm

Sigh. There’s no reason why this outrage cannot be stopped. Not that I’m advocating US military intervention in this case, but the fact of the matter is, the war could have been stopped, and all the refugees safely sent back home, for less than 1/10 the costs - both in lives and resources - of the war in Iraq. And the human rewards would have easily been 10 times greater.

It’s all a matter of wildly misguided policies, and complete lack of political will on the part of the international community.

100 years from now our descendants will be amazed at the atrocities that we so easily shrug off today, and wonder aloud what kind of ogres were we, to allow such outrages to go on year after year after year…

Love ya, Angie. Proud of ya.

faithinher @ 02/27/2007 at 11:57 pm

I usually enjoy staying on the sidelines when negative comments are being made, but tonight I cannot restrain myself from some of the criticisms levied at Angie.
To compare her humanitarian efforts with mega-rich Oprah and Bill Gates is totally ludicrous. As was so eloquently posted earlier, they all deserve to be applauded for their individual efforts. As Angie has said before it doesn’t matter if you’re a mother or a wealthy person on a local or worldwide stage everyone makes a difference in their own way.
And in response to J.H.’s #129 post. She had a school built in Cambodia for 500 hundred students including school uniforms and school supplies, in addition to funding the Maddox-Chivan Children’s Center that cares for children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. In Ethiopia she helped fund an AIDS clinic, and she plans to do more in that country. Not to mention the medical equipment for the pediatric ward in two hospitals in Nambia. Those are just a few of the concrete projects she has put her money towards. Sorry…but she does more than fly around the globe and take notes. As has been mentioned earlier, it’s criticism just for the sake of criticism without any validity.

On a lighter note…I agree with you guys (org Ruth, Angelah & Izzie) about the photo reminding you of the alternate ending of MAMS. I thought of that scene immediately when I saw the photo.

Okay…back to the sidelines.

Woman who can as the song goes “bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, and never, never let you forget your a man.” Ok stepping away from the wine glass but you know what I mean. Angie is truly amazing. I hope she is able to bring much needed attention to the plight of the refugees at Darfur. I believe that her trip was set to coincide with the ongoing trials at the Internation Criminal Court against the principal perpetrators of the genocide in Darfur that is being reported now.

lylian: yes, i think you are right. the visit is timed to draw attention to something, be it the ICC trials or may be just the desparate shortage of funds to support these refugees.

Sheri, even if Brad and Angelina having nothing really on, its not because they can’t have something on if they want to but because they choose to. More then once, both Brad and Angelina have indicated that they see their professional lives taking a different turn from acting. Sure, they may still act in smaller roles, smaller films. Both want to focus on their families. As for their movie careers, I think Brad will do more production and Angelina focus on her humanitarian work.

it will take the publicity heat off them and their families and I think they are ready for that.

Justice for Darfur
By Angelina Jolie
Wednesday, February 28, 2007; Page A19

BAHAI, Chad — Here, at this refugee camp on the border of Sudan, nothing separates us from Darfur but a small stretch of desert and a line on a map. All the same, it’s a line I can’t cross. As a representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, I have traveled into Darfur before, and I had hoped to return. But the UNHCR has told me that this camp, Oure Cassoni, is as close as I can get.

Sticking to this side of the Sudanese border is supposed to keep me safe. By every measure — killings, rapes, the burning and looting of villages — the violence in Darfur has increased since my last visit, in 2004. The death toll has passed 200,000; in four years of fighting, Janjaweed militia members have driven 2.5 million people from their homes, including the 26,000 refugees crowded into Oure Cassoni.

Sudanese refugees from Darfur rest near a camp in eastern Chad this month. (By Alfred De Montesquiou — Associated Press)
Sudan Official Accused of War Crimes

Attacks on aid workers are rising, another reason I was told to stay out of Darfur. By drawing attention to their heroic work — their efforts to keep refugees alive, to keep camps like this one from being consumed by chaos and fear — I would put them at greater risk.

I’ve seen how aid workers and nongovernmental organizations make a difference to people struggling for survival. I can see on workers’ faces the toll their efforts have taken. Sitting among them, I’m amazed by their bravery and resilience. But humanitarian relief alone will never be enough.

Until the killers and their sponsors are prosecuted and punished, violence will continue on a massive scale. Ending it may well require military action. But accountability can also come from international tribunals, measuring the perpetrators against international standards of justice.

Accountability is a powerful force. It has the potential to change behavior — to check aggression by those who are used to acting with impunity. Luis Moreno-Ocampo, chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), has said that genocide is not a crime of passion; it is a calculated offense. He’s right. When crimes against humanity are punished consistently and severely, the killers’ calculus will change.

On Monday I asked a group of refugees about their needs. Better tents, said one; better access to medical facilities, said another. Then a teenage boy raised his hand and said, with powerful simplicity, “Nous voulons une épreuve.” We want a trial. He is why I am encouraged by the ICC’s announcement yesterday that it will prosecute a former Sudanese minister of state and a Janjaweed leader on charges of crimes against humanity.

Some critics of the ICC have said indictments could make the situation worse. The threat of prosecution gives the accused a reason to keep fighting, they argue. Sudanese officials have echoed this argument, saying that the ICC’s involvement, and the implication of their own eventual prosecution, is why they have refused to allow U.N. peacekeepers into Darfur.

It is not clear, though, why we should take Khartoum at its word. And the notion that the threat of ICC indictments has somehow exacerbated the problem doesn’t make sense, given the history of the conflict. Khartoum’s claims aside, would we in America ever accept the logic that we shouldn’t prosecute murderers because the threat of prosecution might provoke them to continue killing?

When I was in Chad in June 2004, refugees told me about systematic attacks on their villages. It was estimated then that more than 1,000 people were dying each week.

In October 2004 I visited West Darfur, where I heard horrific stories, including accounts of gang-rapes of mothers and their children. By that time, the UNHCR estimated, 1.6 million people had been displaced in the three provinces of Darfur and 200,000 others had fled to Chad.

It wasn’t until June 2005 that the ICC began to investigate. By then the campaign of violence was well underway.

As the prosecutions unfold, I hope the international community will intervene, right away, to protect the people of Darfur and prevent further violence. The refugees don’t need more resolutions or statements of concern. They need follow-through on past promises of action.

There has been a groundswell of public support for action. People may disagree on how to intervene — airstrikes, sending troops, sanctions, divestment — but we all should agree that the slaughter must be stopped and the perpetrators brought to justice.

In my five years with UNHCR, I have visited more than 20 refugee camps in Sierra Leone, Congo, Kosovo and elsewhere. I have met families uprooted by conflict and lobbied governments to help them. Years later, I have found myself at the same camps, hearing the same stories and seeing the same lack of clean water, medicine, security and hope.

It has become clear to me that there will be no enduring peace without justice. History shows that there will be another Darfur, another exodus, in a vicious cycle of bloodshed and retribution. But an international court finally exists. It will be as strong as the support we give it. This might be the moment we stop the cycle of violence and end our tolerance for crimes against humanity.

What the worst people in the world fear most is justice. That’s what we should deliver.

The writer is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.

During a week when a former vice presidential candidate and policy wonk strode into the Kodak Theatre and won an Academy Award, it is only fitting that a famous actress may walk through the door of a prestigious policy institute in New York. Actress Angelina Jolie, another Oscar winner, has been nominated to join the Council on Foreign Relations, an elite uptown club of policy mavens.

If approved, the star of “Tomb Raider” will join the likes of Alexander Haig, Brent Scowcroft, and Henry Kissinger at the august organization, which may be loosening its straight-laced image a tiny bit.

The brunette bombshell will add star power to a group more used to hushed halls and high-brow discussion in mahogany-paneled drawing rooms than Hollywood red carpets and velvet ropes.

To be sure, Warren Beatty, Michael Douglas, and Ron Silver are already among the group’s members, who are drawn from the echelons of business and public sectors, law government, journalism, nonprofit, and the academy. But no actresses appear among the roster of more than 4,000 members, though Glenn Close has attended briefings.

“Will members stare? You bet,” the founder of Public Affairs Books, Peter Osnos, said. He said the definition of the establishment has clearly changed. There were many ways to qualify for the Council, and being a humanitarian was certainly one of them.

Ms. Jolie grew aware of refugee crises while filming in Cambodia and has since visited more than 20 countries as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner of Refugees. A member of the council, Noel Lateef, said Ms. Jolie is someone who has a demonstrated interest in international affairs.

What might she wear at the council, whose dress code requires “business attire?” Perhaps the traditional suit she wore in an advertisement for the fashion label St. John. She may not show too many of her tattoos, though the one that reads “know your rights” could relate to policy.

Describing two layouts in Vogue, the senior features editor at Style.com, Laird Borrelli, said Ms. Jolie wore off-the-shoulder, flowing dresses that were “Grecian” and “goddess-y.”

“She has a certain panache,” Mr. Lateef, who is also the president of the Foreign Policy Association, said. “There’s no doubt she will add to the glitter of the events.” Newsweek’s editor, Jon Meacham, concurred: “I think it is safe to say that Ms. Jolie would indeed add a certain élan to meetings – though multilateralism has its own kind of sex appeal.”

“She has been nominated for term membership. The council is considering her nomination,” a spokeswoman for the council told The New York Sun. Term memberships are five-year stints for those under age 36. The nomination will be considered at the council’s next board of directors meeting, the spokeswoman said. If accepted, she may then apply for full membership at the end of her term membership.

Mr. Lateef said the council has a careful selection process and those nominated have already been vetted. The council was begun in 1921. Prominent members included Elihu Root, Averell Harriman, and John Foster Dulles. In 1922, the council launched its flagship quarterly, Foreign Affairs. Today, women comprise about a quarter of the council’s membership.

Walking up the marble staircase to the council’s traditional secondfloor rooms, the actress might encounter journalists (Brokaw, Rather, Couric, Walters) or a gaggle of university presidents (Sexton, Brademas, Oliva, Bollinger, Rupp, Sovern). She could chat about banking with Felix Rohatyn, art with Tom Krens or Glenn Lowry, or politics with a former president who especially loves Tinseltown, William Jefferson Clinton. She might talk about film with agent Michael Ovitz, Hollywood attorney Bertram Fields, or a former president of Time Warner, Gerald Levin.

“Angelina gets along with everybody,” the deputy head of public information for UNHCR, Jennifer Pagonis, said.

No daycare at the council may be a let down for Ms. Jolie, who gave birth to a child, Shiloh, last May, and is also raising two adopted children with actor Brad Pitt.

In addition to policy papers and ambassadorial addresses, the council occasionally shows documentaries with a foreign policy content. Ms. Jolie herself made a documentary about western Kenya with a Columbia professor and council member, Jeffrey Sachs.

Mr. Holtzman, who works for the firm Brown Lloyd James, said it was natural for the council to consider someone like Ms. Jolie. He said culture has become a major force in international affairs. A Newsweek senior editor, Jonathan Alter, said she is as qualified as, or more so, as other term members — many are bankers and lawyers with less actual experience overseas than she possesses.

The program director of National Committee on American Foreign Policy, Daniel Morris, gives Ms. Jolie credit for humanitarian work, but cautioned that it would take more than a Hollywood actress to effect the kind of change needed to solve complex issues facing Africa

i think we should all register and leave a comment at the washington post to show them how powerful that article is. You have to register but its free. Here’s what i’m going to post.
Powerful article and I commend Mrs. Jolie, the aid workers and the others who have spoken out against this genocide in the darfur region for their perseverance in trying to find solutions to this matter. My heart goes out to the families of this region and i am deeply saddened by the fact that after the world proclaimed “never again” after the holocaust that we are still dealing with such a huge lack of respect for humanity.

[i]The writer is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.

Thought I’d copy and paste this article written by ANGELINA JOLIE herself, appearing in the Washinton Post. Here is the link - one you may wish to click on as I believe we would want to encourage the Washington Post of our interest in both DARFUR and Angelina Jolie’s efforts. So glad there are people like Angelina who cares.

Thank you. Wow, this article is on the opinion page of the Washington Post. Angelina is a powerhouse, forging ahead dealing as best she can with the harsh realities that exist today. I am so proud of this woman who stands for positive constructive actions, not negative destructive ones. I also think Brad must be a strong good special man for this unique woman to love him as much as she obviously does.

Malaya, what a great idea, I love Washington Post anyway. OK, I’ll do it, thanks! As you can see, I am still awake and staring at the tylenol pm’s

I really feel Jane and her husband got a shocker when it finally did hit them that Brad’s Angie is a real life lesson in learning how you cant judge the book until you read it. You see some joy on Brad’s moms face and that got to count for something and it is telling some truths no matter how some dont want it to.

Lylian, thank you posting this great article of hers. She’s utterly a genuine and caring person. I don’t know what else to say..but I def have a lot of reverence for her.

Thanks for the articles.
Please, give the washington post the hits, even if you don’t leave a comment.

It is important to make a point to the media that the fan base is not all about glossy pics, red carpets and movies.

We care, we get the message, we do our best to help, educate ourselves and others. Angelina’s work as a goodwil ambassador reaches us and many more, it is not a vanity crown, it is a heartbreaking job, especially at times like these, when the people who care feel powerless, not being able to cross that line.

I feel this is exactly what Angie needed to get pass her mom’s passing. To see how others are suffering is such a humbling thing. I think Angie is great and I admire her and what she is doing. She could be like so many other celebs and go shopping!! May God bring her home safely to her family.

i am full of admiration for Angie. :)
Her generous heart to the less fortunate and her undaunted effort to do what is necessary for them.
May she be blessed many more times.
She deserve the respect and normination to the on the council of Foreign relation and may be well more qualified than some on it as was written on the article.

Also, looking at the bigger pics of the 2 Jolie-Pitts girls with granny, i am all ready to volunteer for baby-sitting them. :)
i do that for my girl friends some time too and thoroughly enjoy the time.

Lylian, thank you so very much for posting that link to the Washington Post.

What an amazing person! She has gone to this very dangerous part of the world to bring light to the suffering of these people, and to fight for justice for them. It’s funny, I remember once saying that I wish I had the words of a poet to describe her stunning beauty, and now, after reading her piece, I realize that I could use those same words to describe her incredible inner beauty.

Keep your head up Angie!! You are someone who is trying to do good in the world, unliike most people who find fault but do NOTHING themselves. HYPOCRITES!!!!

Hi guys,

This is my first time blogging in justjared. I couldn’t help myself to write something, simply because this topic touches my heart dearly. Personally, I am a student who is currently majoring in Political Science: International Affairs. I am taking this route in my life because ever since I was 18 years old, I have always had the extreme passion to travel the world particularly the third world countries and reach out to people who seem to be abandoned in the world we’re living in. I have great desire to work for the UN sooner or later and be involved in numerous non-profit and humanitarian organizations.

Honestly, I have never seen any movies of Angeline Jolie, but all I can tell you is that I have quite a few clips of her documentaries of her adventures and missions to various third world countries, as a UN goodwill ambassador. I am not familiar with her work as an actress, but I deeply respect her for all the good deeds that she has been doing so far globally. Sometimes, I envy her because she has the great power to make a difference while various people like me have to put up extraordinary efforts just to make a voice in our society. I would always look forward on meeting her and working with her on humanitarian affairs if our paths happened to meet at some point.

God bless you Angie. With the way you are now, you become an real idol of 21st century women.

to MARIA,

I have no idea why I thought that you have a Greek origine. Sorry!

Good night ladies! Sweet dreams.

Go Angie! Proud of her :*

She and jared never disapoint me… I am amazed by HER actions and committments while the group of cheap scarecrows choose to burn their vain lives and do nothing but spending money on showing off their loose-hanging asses at Oscars…

What an amazing human being.I’m proud to be her fan.

Thank you Jared for the thread. You do a wonderful job of giving we fans a place to view and support the Jolie Pitts. Love, peace, and safety to dear Angelina.

I know much has been written about Angelina’s nomination to join the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).

The question on my mind since I read this news a few days ago is

- ‘Does Angelina wants to be nominated into CFR?’

- ‘ who nominated or elected Angelina into CFR ? was Angelina informed or consulted prior to her nomination ?

- ‘ No doubt it’s an honor to be nominated or elected into the Council - but does Angelina care if she is elected/nominated in ?’ Irregardless, Angelina will continue her UN work, she will continue to bring awareness to the issues she support simply because she is already well known and her name bring awareness to any issues raised.

I have no doubt it’s great to be elected into this council ..but again , the big question is - does Angelina wants to be in ?

Question #2 @ 02/28/2007 at 6:09 am

and I need to add one more part to my list of burning question on CFR and Angelina’s nomination

– so what happens when the Council vet through and ”decides against” –ok, we the council decides NOT to accept Angelina’s nomination .
– is this what’a building up to in the weeks to come?
– hopefully this nomination is not using Angelina’s name in vain for raising awareness to an almost century old council.

You go Angie.I see now why she said she is learning more about international laws and courts. She wants to take this fight to another level. You go Angelina.

Thanks for all the artciles :D

And well if Warren Beatty, Michael Douglas, and Ron Silver are group’s members I really hope she gets in.

Photo exhibit puts faces on Africa’s thirst

Doug Pitt’s images document effort to bring Tanzanians clean water.

Sony Hocklander
News-Leader
Imagine walking for miles to fill several gallon jugs with dirty mountain runoff. That’s the only source of water in many dry, remote areas of Africa, says Doug Pitt. Which is why WorldServe, a nonprofit group based in Springfield, digs wells to provide clean water.
“The Water Project,” an exhibit of photographs Pitt took in Tanzania in September to document those efforts, opens tonight at the Randy Bacon Photography Studio and Gallery as part of the First Friday Art Walk. Bacon printed 28 large images from Pitt’s photos, which are for sale to benefit WorldServe.

A hobby photographer for nearly a decade, Pitt became involved with WorldServe after its president, John Bongiorno, learned the local businessman had similarly documented Convoy of Hope’s efforts in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. Pitt knew about WorldServe because his church, James River Assembly of God, was helping to fund the water project. The trip to Africa included several church members in addition to Pitt, Bongiorno and developer Matt Miller, who assisted Pitt.

The dry conditions in Tanzania are unbelievable, says Pitt, and the mountain runoff is so dirty “you wouldn’t wash your car with it.”

Shooting in Africa was tough, he says. Many adults were reluctant to have their photo taken.

“But the kids loved it. And they liked to see their faces on the back of the (digital) camera,” Pitt says.

Bongiorno is excited about Pitt’s photos. “There is something powerful when you see the connection between water and people struggling to get water,” he says. “Doug has a gift for being able to … bring it home so people can understand what this project is all about.”

So this old article for last summer must be true. Here is the portion about Brad and his brother.

Bonner Springs Elementary School got a rare chance to help students in faraway lands this week. Since deciding to adopt a new reading series, the school no longer needs the materials from the previous one, which had been in use since 1996.

Kim Mitchell, assistant principal at the school, said she didn’t want to just throw the books away, but when she began looking for ways to give them away, it was neither cheap nor simple.

“We couldn’t give these ones away,” Mitchell said.

She said she’d hoped the books could be used by schools whose materials were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, but publishers had already stepped forward to donate books to those affected districts.

Often, Mitchell said, that publishers would gladly collect old materials to give to poor school districts, but the previous series was so old that no support materials — test forms and workbooks — were available anymore for it.

The school collected more than 4,500 books since classes ended this year, Mitchell said. She said she found nonprofit organizations that would take the books, but they wanted 65 cents per book to ship them overseas. The school couldn’t afford to pay the more than $2,900 in shipping, Mitchell said, but she soon heard good news from Karen Borg, a sixth-grade teacher at Clark Middle School

Borg happened to be from Springfield, Mo., where she had known Doug Pitt, brother of actor Brad Pitt. The brothers had founded a divisionof the Convoy of Hope, which distributes food and other resources to those in need around the world, including emergency relief services.

The organization agreed to take the books, and Tuesday morning a semitrailer truck appeared at the school. Before that, there was plenty of work to be done, though: collecting about 100 boxes from area businesses and boxing the books. To do that, 10 custodians from each of the district’s schools came and helped, and also loaded the boxes onto the trailer.

The books will probably go to schools in Latin America, said Kenton Moody, international director for Convoy of Hope. Moody said the organization would first send samples of the books to educators of schools that might receive the books so the teachers can evaluate the materials

-here’s another great bit from rainy (original is in French and the Golden Globes’ shot of B&A are on the cover of today’s La Presse from Montreal):

QUOTE
Pretty Angelina and Brad Pitt in Montreal
Marie-Claude Lortie
The Press

Pretty Angelina and Brad Pitt, which form the most famous couple in the world in the category “actors with defense of humane causes”, will be in Montreal the nearest autumn to take part in the next Promesse conference of the millenium, learned the Press.

They will succeed thus the American former president Bill Clinton and the actress Mia Farrow, invited most prestigious of the first Promesse conference of the millenium, which took place last November and whose topic was the fight against the poverty of the children.

The former secretary general of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, will also count among the guests of 2007, like Muhammad Yunus, pioneer of the microcrédit in Bangladesh, which made it possible thousands of the poor to leave itself misery, which was worth the Nobel Prize of peace to him last year.

The Promesse conference of the millenium - whose next topic and the precise dates must be made public in the next weeks - is organized by Daniel Germain, the founder of the Club of the breakfasts of Quebec. It is while attending an event in company of Brad Pitt, at the time of the passage of the actor to the international Festival of film of Toronto last September, that Mr. Germain offered to the spouse of Angelina Jolie to take part in the conference of 2007.

Pitt is recognized for a long time like an engaged actor, in particular in the causes concerning peace with the Middle East and the access to the dwelling for most stripped.

Impassioned of architecture, it offers its support in particular to the foundation Habitat for Humanity of the American former president Jimmy Carter.

But it is especially when it started to attend the actress Angelina Jolie, very active near organizations fighting against the poverty and itinerant ambassadress of the High commissionership of the United Nations for refugees (HCR), that Pitt started to be largely perceived like an influential personality in the humane field.

Mrs. Jolie, it, is known universally for her social engagement and this, since many years.

Before having a baby with Pitt last spring - it was confined in Namibia, to protect themselves from the paparazzis, but also to draw a positive attention to Africa -, it adopted two children in countries in the process of development: Maddox, in Kampuchea and Zahara, in Ethiopia. Since, the two small children were also adopted by Brad Pitt, but the couple let know that it would not marry as much as the marriage for the couple of the same sex would not be legal everywhere in the United States.

Always in the humane vein, the family comes to buy a house and to settle with New-Orleans, by saying openly that was to help to draw the attention to this zone disaster victim by the hurricane Katrina two years ago. It will not be the first visit in Montreal for Mrs. Jolie, who knows well the city since it there went twice to turn The Bone Collector in 1998 and Taking Lives in 2003.

Last year, nearly 3000 people attended the conference Promesse of the millenium, a concept inspired by engagements of the United Nations for the fight against poverty.

Among them, one found 750 guests having paid 1000 $ each one (what gave right a second ticket, to give to a student or a non-profit organization). For the other participants, the price of the tickets was 100 $.

Last year, only Bill Clinton and Mia Farrow were remunerated for their presence. The seal of the first - the amounts were never made public - was versed with its foundation while the seal of Mrs. Farrow was given to the United Nations.

The profits of the conference were versed with the Club of the breakfasts of Canada, an organization which allows some 200.000 Canadian children of going to the school by starting the day the full belly.

if you google Angelina jolie, you will see that real news sites are reporting about her trip to Africa.Which is what Angelina wants. The tabloids can stick to their lies who cares.Angelina is moving forward and she is back home with Brad,Grandma,Grandpa and the kids.

Mrs. Lenny @ 02/28/2007 at 8:53 am

God bless her and her family. She is so sweet and caring. I wish the Jolie Pitts: great health, long life and a beautiful, loving time on this planet.

Peace~

Us Weekly is sticking to their adoption story. They are repeting that they didn’t go to the oscars because she was in Africa, he was in Nola and “Us has learned that the couple is also on the hunt for someone to help take care of the Vietnamese newborn that the pair plans to adopt”.
The good news is that are not part of the cover main 3 stories this week.

Guys,

I think I have fallen inlove with Angelina’s X-husband Johnny Lee Miller. He is just so adorable. Look at him in these pitcures.

http://www.the-planets.com/star-biography/Jonny_Lee_Miller_Biography.htm

Quick Facts.
1. Johnny and Angie met on the set of Hackers in 1994 when she was 18 and he was 21. They got married in 1996.

2. He is 35 years old.

3. Angie said in an interview in 2004 that divorcing Johnny was one of the biggest mistake of her life.

4. Doesn’t do many interviews because he is known in the UK to be very private person.

5. Has the cutest smile. Just adorable.

6. Is working on a film where Angie is the executive producer “Marathon”

Also, look at him in the Megan Mullally Show

Thanks Jared. I am never disappointed. She looks wonderful. I am sure Brad and the kids will be glad when she is home safe.

Good Morning everyone!! The article Angelina wrote on he trip is amazing. She is so well spoken and articulate. I am very proud of her an dall she does for refugees, this woman has single handedly raised the horrible plight of refugees. Her name suits her perfectly, she is an Angel.

Actress Details Darfur Border Situation (Mia Farrow)

Wed Feb 28, 8:27 AM ET

Mia Farrow says she encountered burned villages and terrified refugees with no help in sight on her recent trip to Central African Republic and Chad.

At a news conference Tuesday, the 62-year-old actress and U.N. goodwill ambassador recalled impressions from her visits earlier this month to villages and refugee camps along border areas where violence has spilled over from Sudan’s Darfur region.

Farrow said her convoy stopped on a seemingly desolate road in northwestern Central African Republic after passing “burned village after burned village after burned village it was numbing and dispiriting.”

She said she heard that people were living along the roadside, even though the area appeared to be uninhabited, and that they might appear if the unarmed convoy paused.

After waiting silently for 15 minutes, people began to emerge “like specters, emaciated, with remnants of clothes or no clothes at all, terrified,” she told a U.N. news conference.

From talking to them, Farrow said she learned the people were too scared to return to their villages and rebuild but they were also afraid of who might find them in hiding.

At the sound of a vehicle approaching on the road, “you could hear the pounding of feet on the hard clay ground as 300 people vanished, vanished into the bush in sheer terror,” she said.

“This is an extremely traumatized population and neglected,” Farrow said, adding that some of the people have been living in the bush for more than a year.

She said that if an international peacekeeping force was not sent to protect civilians in the region, “you’re going to see two collapsed states, which will serve no one.”

Eastern Chad is wracked by clashes between government forces and Sudan-based Chadian rebels and cross-border attacks on civilians by Sudan-based militia. There also has been fighting in northeastern Central African Republic but the government and rebel groups recently agreed to negotiate an end to their conflict.

http://entertainment.tv.yahoo.com/entnews/ap/20070228/117268002000.html

On Sunday, Rick Neal landed in Chad’s capital N’Djamena (via Paris) to begin a month-long mission looking at internally displaced people (IDPs) in Chad and the Central African Republic. He sent the following in today:

“Sunday was Oscar Night in Los Angeles, but there in Paris Angelina Jolie was making her way to the flight to N’Djamena, surrounded by a coterie of Air France staff. I found myself with her again yesterday morning, on the small UN plane coming out to Abeche, the humanitarian outpost in eastern Chad. She flew on to Bahai in the northeast, to shed light on the situation of refugees coming from Darfur. For a few minutes, at least, Refugees International got to bask in the light of humanitarian celebrity.

Borg happened to be from Springfield, Mo., where she had known Doug Pitt, brother of actor Brad Pitt. The brothers had founded a divisionof the Convoy of Hope, which distributes food and other resources to those in need around the world, including emergency relief services.

So, those who thought that Brad didn’t help after hurricane katrina and only came in later for publicity were wrong. He has been helping all along through a division of the Convoy of Hope that he and his brother founded.,

I recently finished reading a great book about a boy from Sudan who became a refugee when he was around 8 and is now “a lost Boy”. It is a first hand account of his life from the time he had to run from his village to living in a refugee camp for over 10 years to his life in America and the dificulties he has here. It is called “What is the What” and Dave Eggers(a great author) wrote it as it was told to him by Velentino Achuk Deng, I highly recommend it.

I didn’t know about that. It’s great. That comes to show you how serious Brad and Angie are about the things they are getting involved and how much devoted they are. And I’m so glad that Doug is helping his brother and even taking his individual action with Worldserve to bring clean water in Tanzania while Brad is involved with Global Green and the rebuilding process of NOLA.

The Pitts are some very kindhearted people. (And of course I’m talking about Angie too cause she is Mrs. Pitt non the less ;) )

thanks Hiya it looks like Grandma Pitt might be holding Shiloh? Hmmm can’t really tell. I hope we can see bigger ones soon.

Jennifer Aniston is NEVER mother material

I am glad that Jen did not have a kid during the marriage. Imagine, Jen needs a whole support system around her. She would call her girlfriends on the tinest detail. How can Jen take care of a baby if she cant even take care of herself.

She should stick to the 2 dogs. Human being is a lot more complicated. Dogs are easier.

I’ve never seen Jen felt comfortable while holding Courtney Cox’s baby. Jen looked so constipated while holding Cox’s kid.

Of course they addresses them as grandpa and grandma or a variation, I’m sure Mad isn’t calling them Jane and Bill!

We always said foreign policy was sexy, and now here’s proof: Angelina Jolie is on the shortlist to join the power wonks at the Council on Foreign Relations, the exclusive New York think tank. The actress was nominated by council member Trevor Neilson, her pal and adviser on political and global matters. “There is no better way for someone who is involved in international relations to build a deep understanding of these issues,” he told us yesterday.

Jolie’s bid, which required two other letters of recommendation, was approved by the membership committee last week and is now “under consideration,” said council spokeswoman Anya Schmemann. If she’s voted in at the June board meeting, the 31-year-old Jolie will receive a five-year “term” membership (typical for younger applicants) and join 4,000 deep thinkers such as Bill Clinton, **** Cheney, Condi Rice, Colin Powell, Madeleine Albright, Henry Kissinger, Alan Greenspan , George Soros, Barbara Walters and Lisa Ling.

You’re asking yourself: Why? Jolie, currently a U.N. goodwill ambassador, can already meet with just about anyone on the planet. (And she’s influential enough to have a piece about Darfur published today on The Post’s op-ed page.) But at the council, she’ll get a crash course in global policy from the experts. “She takes learning about these issues very seriously,” said Neilson. And the wonks get a worldwide sex symbol who draws cameras every time she breathes.

We’re guessing she gets in.

OT I found this and I think it’s awesome lol

Paris Hilton is going to be banned from the AP newswire
Paris the Thought: A.P. Says Au Revoir to Hilton Hottie

On Feb. 13, the Associated Press declared its plans to boldly go where few wire services would dare to go in this day and age: the no–Paris Hilton zone.

“Next week,” entertainment editor Jesse Washington wrote in an e-mail memo obtained by The Transom, “the print team is planning an unconventional experiment: We are NOT going to cover Paris Hilton.

“Barring any major, major news, we are not going to put a single word about Paris on the wire,” the memo continued. “If something does come up, big or small, we encourage discussions on whether we should write about it.”

The results of the experiment, naturally, will be fodder for a future A.P. story. “Hopefully we will be able to discuss what ‘news’ we missed,” read the memo, which could have used some stern copy-editing, “the repercussions of our blackout for AP both editorially and business-wise, and most importantly the force that cause the world to be fixated on this person who, despite her shallow frivolity, represents an epochal development in our culture.”

Reached for comment, Mr. Washington said, “There was a surprising amount of hand-wringing. A lot of people in the newsroom were saying this was tampering with the news.” One editor’s response was apparently: “This is a great idea—can we add North Korea?”

Mr. Washington said he was inspired by the fact that, in the past year, Ms. Hilton has appeared on the A.P. wire about twice a week.

“We got lucky,” he said. “Totally by accident, her birthday party was the day before we started the experiment. There really weren’t any major news stories involving Paris, so we didn’t have that many really tough decisions to make.” Though “her name did pop up in a couple stories, despite my best efforts.”

If only we could do the same with the _ stories/posts on BAMZS threads.

Great photos of Grandma and her grandchildren. It’s Madds turn to have some fan with his grandmother and his little sister. Jane Pitt seems to have so much fun taking care of them. Her face expression is pure bliss. She has already raise three children and four grandchildren from Doug and Julie. I think she can’t even believe quite yet that her oldest son is a father of three. She seems to enjoy being a grandmother very much. The kids will be raised in very good hands in this family.

And yes I think the ladie who is in the carrige in Holly too.

Oh yeah. Hmmmm let’s see. Since she got with Brad she have done five trips on the behalf of UNHCR as Goodwill ambassador in Pakistan, Cambodia, India, Costa Rica, and Chad in which Brad accompanied her in three of them. She was a spoke person in Davos last winter and both Brad and Angie will be spokespersons in Montreal Canada this fall to talk against poverty and HIV/AIDS. Angie is also a well respected humanitarian and activist to even be considered as a member in the council of Foreign Relations.

And as for her carrier. TGS is doing very well in the domestic Box Office and she already has three movies that are coming out this year and next year. She recently finished shooting “A Mighty Heart” and she has another movie in development “Atlas Shrugged”.

So as I said go by a clue. It’s not that expenssive.

YAWN. It’s “too bad”, “ignore me if you must” again….

As far as your comments.

Her CAREER was in FREE FALL since Tomb Raider 1, everything was BOMBING topped off by the flop known as Alexander.

Original Sin - BOMB
Life, or Something Like It - BOMB
Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life - FLOP
Beyond Borders - BOMB
Taking Lives - BOMB
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - BOMB
Alexander - MEGA BOMB

Brad RESCUED her career with M&MS.

As far as her “humanitarian efforts” pre Brad…no one cared. Her efforts didn’t get HALF the attention they do now. She was just an actress with bomb after bomb, and without the BBT nonsense, she was BORING to the press. Unfortunatly the media didn’t/doesn’t care enough to report about serious stuff like that.

Perez has Chad pictures of Angie, along with her full OP-ED piece from the Washington Post. Below is the comment that I posted. I’ve never posted there before, and, yes, I do know that it’s shoveling **** against the tide, but that’s just the kind of day this is.

Perez-Thank you for showing your admiration for Angie by posting the full article. Personally, I admire her ability to completely disregard ignorance, lies, and smear campaigns, while never forgetting people who need help so very desperately. Angie deserves all of our respect for the way she actually lives her life and her commitment to helping others, from Hurricane Katrina victims in NOLA all the way to refugees in Chad. The article is proof that people first pay attention to Angie because she is beautiful and mysterious, but they stay and listen because she knows what she’s talking about and has important things to say.
