Angelina Jolie visits camp in Chad to assess situation for Darfur refugees
By Matthew Conway in Bahai, Chad
BAHAI, Chad, February 27 (UNHCR) – UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie on Tuesday completed a two-day mission to a refugee camp in eastern Chad which enabled her to assess how the security situation has deteriorated for Sudanese refugees since her last visit to Chad three years ago.
Jolie, who visited both Chad and neighbouring Sudan’s Darfur region with UNHCR in 2004, said she was struck by the sense of hope she encountered at the Oure-Cassoni camp near this town and by the widespread desire for peace-keepers to be deployed in Chad.
She also reflected on the hardship and suffering she had seen at the camp, which is located less than five kilometres from the border with Sudan. “It’s always hard to see decent people, families, living in such difficult conditions,” she said. “What is most upsetting is how long it is taking the international community to answer this crisis,” Jolie added.
The award-winning actress had to travel through a sandstorm on Monday to reach the Oure-Cassoni camp, which with a refugee population of more than 26,000 is the northernmost of 12 UNHCR-run camps in eastern Chad housing more than 230,000 refugees from Sudan’s troubled Darfur region.
She was greeted at one of the camp’s many primary schools by singing children as the desert wind whipped against the plastic sheeting serving as the structure’s roof and walls. The encroaching sands and storms make their hard life even tougher, with many of the tents and mud-brick houses partially or completely buried. Wood for cooking and heat is scarce in the region, and competition for the resource causes friction between the refugee and local populations.
Refugee women are sometimes sexually and physically abused while out collecting the precious scraps of firewood beyond the protection of police provided by the Chadian government to help ensure refugee security.
At the school, Jolie listened to children’s tales of daily life, their concerns and their hopes of one day returning to their homes in Darfur. The room was filled with laughter as she and the children took turns drawing for each other. She later visited mentally ill refugees.
On Tuesday, Jolie visited a man-made reservoir that feeds the camp with water, but which is now almost empty following disappointing rains last year. Its shrinking reserves are a matter of concern for the refugees and UNHCR.
She then sat down with a group of women and discussed their desire for access to income-generating activities as well as their longing to return home. But the women, who were preparing celebrations for International Women’s Day on March 8, said it was still not safe enough across the border and many of the refugees she spoke to supported calls for a peace-keeping force in Chad.
In a report last week to the United Nations Security Council, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon proposed sending a multi-dimensional peace-keeping mission to Chad to protect civilians and deter cross-border attacks.
The refugees Jolie talked to also drew comfort from recent radio reports saying that the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) had told the Security Council it had credible evidence of grave crimes against humanity committed in Darfur.
“Today, many refugees seemed to have a new sense of hope, and they want to see those guilty brought to trial . . . In order to feel safe enough to return home, these people said they would need to know that the men who attacked them had been stripped of their weapons,” Jolie said. “This is a very important day for international justice. The decisions of the ICC could make a big difference in the lives of these women and their children.”
Jolie had high praise for the UNHCR staff and NGO workers that she met in the camp. “Years into this situation, now finding themselves coming under attack, humanitarian workers’ spirits are unbroken,” she said.
There are more than 230,000 refugees from Sudan in eastern Chad, while some 46,000 refugees from the Central African Republic have found shelter in southern Chad. In addition to these refugees, close to 120,000 Chadians are displaced in the eastern region of their own country.

You are sad, to express that you hate someone you never met so much, its really sad. You hate her because Brad was once married to her? Brangelina loonies use the word hate so much .. scary how much they hate themselves. Not sure why Jen came into that conversation, I guess you cannot seem to get her out of their lives and your own. For the record, never said I was a Jennifer fan. Once again, one of the loonies assuming things on someone elses behave. You know what they say about ASSUMimg .. bless your cold little heart.
Thanks Angelina for your humanity. The world would be a better place with more like you :)
Yes she is the UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. I don’t report the news, I just google it. I am amazed how some reporters get the simple facts wrong. However, the Movie sounds interesting if it is true.

People contribute in their own way. However, this does not take away from AJ’s contribution. She is to be admired for all the work she has done on behalf of Refugees. AJ has given a voice to a lot of these people, especially in the Sudan. No one has put AJ on a pedestal. However, a person can respect the work she has done. No one is perfect and everyone has a past. However, a person can look towards the future and try to make a difference in the world.
Post #603 - was meant for the shiloh thread. I am flipping between the posts trying to catch up.
admired?
inspiration?
respect?
I dont think she deserves any of this. There are people who live and breath helping others. They actually sacrifice everything in their lives. Those are the people I admire, respect, and am inspired by. Angelina basically is there for the photo op and pr. She is nowhere near what those people are.
She is wearing a tailored outfit. What a snob.

That’s all you could come up with? Her suit is tailored? Did I miss something ? Is it a crime against humanities to wear a suit?
She wrote 868 words about an issue that matters and that’s all you have to say?
What a loser you are. I’d be angry but I know how sad and desperate you really are.
Now please go away and read about the latest on Anna Nicole. I know that’s more your level.

What are you doing other than complaining about people praising her for her good deeds?
to leyra… don’t be upset on my comments. That’s the truth whether you like it or not. I’m not aniston fan. I am a wife who really concerns of the feeling of a wife who’s husband become unfaithful and cheated them. There are women who wants to do everything just to win the attention of a man. Good if aniston and pitt marriage is on the shaky stage but, it is not. It’s jolie who flirted pitt. Why is she hiding and kept on running away? And in one interview she said that she didn’t sleep with pitt and all of the sudden her stomach shows that she’s pregnant. Isn’t it funny to hear that. I hope your a woman who really have a heart about that situation. If it that case will happen to you, how would you feel, leyra. Any woman who did that has no peace of mind. I hope that the practice of adultery will be corrected and will be stopped. It’s a sin. It’s just like changing clothes, if you doesnt like it change it. That’s not the principle of being married, If you are married you have a vow to GOD and that vow no man can separate what GOD has joined together. I hope you understand what i mean. Just a friendly advise to you leyra.

People, we shouldn’t start assuming that grandma Pitt bought that dress. There are several pictures with Z in dresses, blue denim with her pink sandals. And I think I remember a couple of more. Maybe Angie is back and dressed her, therefore knowing what she is wearing. I don’t believe Angie is opposed to dresses, as she wears them herself. I don’t think grandma pitt would do anything to cause friction between herself and her son’s baby’s mama. Don’t try to read too much into a picture. Just enjoy and savor. Remember we are really seeing Shiloh out and about for the very first time. Before we only saw pictures, People cover, or being carried in a baby carrier. So we don’t know what she was wearing. Now that she is out of her blob stage she is out and about with everyone. Angie should be back by now. She left Sunday and was only going to be gone for 2 days. She should be home by now. peace.

I may have the exact monthis off by a month but Brad and Jen announced their separation/divorce in January 2005. Angelina confirmed her pregnancy in January 2006 . She had her baby in May 2006 . How does that make her an adulterer if the marriage was over and the divorce was finalalized in October 2005.? I think there are some of you who just want to hate her so much that you cannot even fairly reason . And she really did not break up a marriage - that was already broken beyond repair according to the behavior of the two parties BP and JA . If there was any chance for this marriage then there would have been some effort by BP to reconcile , meet , something . He would not have cleared out his belongings , bought another house , and got her out of the Plan B company they both were involved in . No , he wanted nothing else to do with her . If not Angelina then he would have found someone else to start a new life with but fate bought AJ to him and they are more compatible than anyone he could have met . They were destined to be together .

I forgot to add that the flirtations , if any , was a two way street I’m sure . And all marriages are not or should not be forced to stay together . There are some marriages that for the sake of children , one or both spouses , or the community should be broken apart . I know in the most perfect world “no man should put asunder ” but we don’t live in a perect world .
Who has more pictures of AJ in Chad? I would love to see those that were shown on The Insder. Thanks JJ
