KHARTOUM, Sudan - Gunmen have killed two African Union peacekeepers and critically wounded a third in Sudan’s western Darfur region, the AU said Wednesday.

The peacekeeping mission said it was “deeply concerned” the gunmen were believed to belong to the Sudan Liberation Army, the rebel faction that signed the Darfur Peace Agreement in May 2006.

That signatories of the accord would attack peacekeepers is a severe blow to international attempts to promote the peace process and persuade other warring factions to join it.

The gunmen abducted and killed the two peacekeepers while they were “on administrative duty” Monday in the Darfur town of Graida, the AU said. “A third soldier was critically injured,” the statement said, without giving details of how the attack was carried out.

“This deplorable and condemnable act was perpetrated by gunmen believed to be elements belonging to Sudan Liberation Movement or Army (Minni Minnawi faction), which is in full control of Graida,” the statement said, referring to the leader of the SLA who signed the peace agreement.

In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the African Union has its headquarters, an official said the slain peacekeepers were Nigerian.

“They were just shopping. They were unarmed and they were attacked by unidentified men,” said Mahmoud Kane, the head of the African Union’s Darfur Integrated Task Force.

The deaths brought to 11 the number of AU military personnel who have been killed on duty since the force was deployed to Darfur in 2004. Another peacekeeper is listed as missing.

With the 7,000-member AU force overwhelmed in a region the size of Texas, the U.N. Security Council last year recommended replacing it with more than 20,000 U.N. peacekeepers. The Sudanese government has rejected this, insisting the AU needs only technical assistance and equipment from the United Nations.

Also Monday, about 30 gunmen of groups that signed the May accord surrounded an office for the implementation of the peace agreement in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, and “threatened the officer-in-charge,” the AU said.

The African Union is “deeply concerned that these, and other recent incidents of this nature, occurred in El Fasher and Graida, both of them strongholds of the signatories.”

The AU said the slain peacekeepers’ vehicle was stolen. It called on the Minnawi faction to investigate the attack and ensure the vehicle is returned.

More than 200,000 people have died and more than 2.5 million people have been displaced in four years of fighting in Darfur. The conflict began when members of the region’s ethnic African tribes took up arms against what they saw as decades of neglect and discrimination by the Arab-dominated government in Khartoum.

The government is accused of unleashing a pro-government Arab militia that has committed many of the atrocities in the conflict.

Several rebel factions refused to sign the May accord, leading to an escalation in fighting.

Good for them. If they are willing and able to adopt, more power to them.

I love this couple, but come on…poor little Shiloh is only 10 months…if they keep adding children, there is no possible way to give all those kids the necessary attention…they are saving a life, but I always think, at what expense? Just because you save a child from poverty and place them in wealth, does not always make it right…they need a connection to their parents and if they add 10 kids, you know they cannot possibly carry on full-time duties with their social schedules…they kids will be pushed off on nannies…I know I’m probably offending a lot of Brangelina lovers, but it’s my opinion and they are not perfect…I love them, but hey, give Sholih and Zee some time before adding on a new kid to the brood…

I hope you don’t mind my writing three times, please everyone who has a soul, do not let HW entertainment and tabloid sensationalism blind your eyes to the serious issues around the world that are being raised. Tabloids use Angelina to make money by selling lies, open your eyes and ears to the issues, stop paying attention to irrevelant tabloid gossips, although I do support People mag. for trying to find out the facts before printing. I admire them alot for their courage and love towards their causes, i am not up to criticising them , i am an african and i have been staying in Europe for about three years now and i can say this with all authority, the upbringing here is totally and i mean totally different FROM OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD, i know it is all about making the world a round place and all and everyone learning to love onE another , it ain’t going to happen never , cultures, traditions will always be different and with four kids i pray to God they know what lies ahead , because it will be tough many times and easy for just a little time, i wish them the best but something tells me they are ready for the journey but are not really sure how it is going to lead.

My mother was raise with eight brothers in a house with both parents who worked and turned out quite well. I know of a guy who is the youngest of 22 children and all of the kids turned out to be productive members of society.

JP’s have the resources available to them that these most families do not have and from what it seems, both parents (and their families) are very involved in their children’s daily life and one of them is at home while the other works. I don’t see the problem.

I tell ya…It’s like with every new thread, comes memory loss. I can’t believe some are still going on about breaking the law or AJ carrying Zee and BP carrying Shiloh (at different times) is an indication of who loves which child they love.

ITA … my parents raised seven of us and they had problems because of financial reasons … but all of us became productive members of society anyway. With Brad and Angelina finances are not a problem, and they have said that one will be at work while the other one works, and they have already demonstrated this. So I really don’t see the problem. Besides, as Lainey’s article has mentioned (whether correct or not) I guess it’s because of the race and adoption issue. Heidi Klum is not being chastised for having three kids in three years (no one has brought up the too close together issue) and neither was Britney (and I guess it’s because their children were biological).

Something about adopting children of another race with golden boy Brad Pitt seems to touch something so deep in people that Angelina Jolie has been pilloried and condemned beyond reason.

Hmm, again the pattern, somebody posts negative first (Anon), then agrees with “some other poster” (Rachel) and then both of them agree with each other that we BAMZS lovers have no lives, and then a third one (20/20) appears, seeming independent of the first two …. this is such a freakin’ pattern in all BAMZS threads in JustJared that you can set a clock by it.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s decision to add a child from Vietnam to their family has been a long time coming.

For months the couple have been preparing to find a sibling for Maddox, 5, Zahara, 2, and 10-month-old Shiloh, a “process that began shortly after Shiloh was born [in May],” a source tells PEOPLE in its new issue.

It wasn’t until March 2 that a Vietnamese official revealed that Jolie, 31, had filed preliminary papers to adopt a child – according to one adoption worker, “a boy between the ages of 3 and 5.”

(Vu Duc Long, the head of the country’s international adoption department, told the Associated Press on Wednesday that the boy is between the ages of 3 and 4 and from the Tam Binh orphanage on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City.)

But the source close to Jolie says there are still a few more steps before welcoming a new family member. “It’s wonderful that people are excited about it,” says the friend. “But she is only at the beginning of a very comprehensive and detailed process.”

Why Vietnam? Jolie has traveled extensively in Southeast Asia and has visited the country at least twice. After adopting Maddox from Cambodia and Zahara from Ethiopia, she mused to Good Morning America in December that it might be a good idea to “balance the races so there’s another African person in the house for Z [and] another Asian person in the house for Mad.”

As they navigate adoption red tape, the family of five has been happily settled in New Orleans since January, where Pitt, 43, has been filming the romance The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Locals frequently spot them strolling through the French Quarter, buying baby clothes (a “Dirty South” T-shirt for Maddox, a black dress for Zahara and a hot-pink onesie for Shiloh) and dining out with Button costar Cate Blanchett.

Soon they’ll return home to L.A., where Pitt will resume filming. Jolie, meanwhile, continues to speak out about the atrocities in Darfur as she awaits the phone call that will enable her to officially add to her brood. The good news can’t come soon enough. “I just want more kids,” she told PEOPLE recently. “I’m having a great time.”

I saw or read an interview with Jennifer Aniston, when she was in Australia promoting The Breakup, in that interview she said she does not beleive in compromising, I am going to look for the exact quote, That is why she is where she is today. Just saying–
You must come from a small family or a large one that didn’t get along. Many of us are from large families and we turned out all right and are close to our siblings. What about folks who have twins, triplets, quads and more? Especially those to whom it was a biological fate rather than an engineered one (i.e. invitro or something). They have the resources and the love to have a large family. In fact, didn’t Brad come from one? Four kids? Can’t remember. I think, from what I see in the media and hear from their interviews with regards to their philosophies, that they are doing a wonderful job. Anyone who has the love, patience and resources to adopt a child and love them as your own-kudos to them! I don’t care if they are Meg Ryan, Mia Farrow, etc. I do have doubts about Sharon Stone’s parenting skills, but hey this is a Brad and Angie blog.

LYlian: Cambodia was on the list of single parent adoptions back in 2000 and 2001, before the US closed its doors to adoption there because of the dubious activities of the adoption agency.

On the other hand Madonna knew that:

(a) Malawi was NOT ON the List allowing for International adoption

(b) MADONNA HERSELF SAID IN AN INTERVIEW THAT THE LAWS FOR INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION DID NOT EXIST SO SHE AND HER ADOPTION LAWYERS JUST DID WHAT THEY COULD AND MADE IT UP AS THEY WENT A LONG.

(c) the Malawian NGOs challenging madonna’s adoption actually claims the laws have been BREACHED. I believe one of the claims was that there is minimum residency requirement before someone can adopt a malawian child.

If in fact, Malawi had this minimum residency requiremnet and Madonna did not satisfy the law, then her adoption IS ILLEGAL.

If however, it was as Madonna claimed, the laws were simply unclear, then it would be a different matter. If the laws of adoption in malawi were not clear, then Madonna got approvals from various agencies, which is where the allegations of undue influence, preferential treatment to a woman who just donated US$1.0 million to orphanages in Malawi came in. That in itself could be ILLEGAL too, depending on what was given, what was promised, for the approvals to be given. Depending on what you gave, what you promised, you can be guilty of bribery.

So, I follow the Malawian NGO’s case with interest. Are they alleging a straight out illegality or are they alleging improper conduct on the part of Madonna or what? I’m not clear and neither are you.

I will say that what ever the case, I’m happy that little David was adopted, got out of the orphanage and appears to be much loved in the Ritchie home.

As for Angelina’s alleged adoption in Vietnam, Vietnamese law appears to allow single parents to adopt and married couple to adopt. However, the law does not say anything about UNMARRIED COUPLES ADOPTING. You could argue that the law is unclear. Or you could argue that Vietnamese law is very clear: Single People may adopt.

Under US law, Angelina is not married which means, she is a single woman. Under US laws of intestacy, Angelina will NOT BE REGARDED AS BRAD’S WIFE SHOULD BRAD DIE SUDDENLY WITHOUT A WILL. Under US laws, Angelina may not even be entitled to company health benefits which are extended to the legally married spouse because she isn’t legally married. In her position as a partner for a period of 18 months, it is not even clear if the presumption of joint tenancy applies to Angelina and Brad in respect of their family home in NO. If you were legally married and hold the family home in joint names with your husband, the law presumes, at least in my part of the world and probably in the US too, that you and your husband hold the family home as joint tenants and not tenants in common. I won’t explain what that means but trust me, it has significant legal importance.

So, for Angelina to apply as a single woman, in Vietnam, is not illegal. it is very clear to me that Angelina is a single woman. She is not Brad’s legally wedded wife and lacks many rights under US law. Why do you think that homosexuals want the right to marry? Aside from the desire to be accepted as a member of society, the law gives different rights to legally married couples, which they don’t to cohabitating couples.

If the Vietnamese authorities elect to treat Angelina as a single woman they certainly are justified doing so. The authorities did not investigate the seattle adoption agency because of Angelina’s adoption of Maddox. If you say that Angleina’s adoption caused the scandal, then so did the hundreds, may be thousands of cambodian adoptions which were made through this same agency. Surely, you are not saying that as a celebrity, Angleina should be made responsible for the scandal but not the other adoptees coz they aren’t celebrities.

On the other hand, Madonna’s scandal is ENTIRELY OF HER OWN MAKING. She chose to (in her own words) ” make it up as she went along”. As a lawyer, I can only say, she was badly advised. To risk a matter as important as adoption, regardless of whether you are a celebrity or not, by making up the rules as you go along, is just plain DUMB.

The thinking seems like if they are “not like them” it has to be charity. How could you possibly love another child from a different race unless it was charity? Some “applaud” them for doing charity work. Adopting, if I’m not mistaken means that you want a child. Does wanting a child make you a humanitarian? Or it it charity only if you adopt from an orphanage? People are confusing the two. It’s simple, they are adopting because they love children and they want another child. They do humanitarian work, because it’s fulfilling and want to make a difference in the world. I just feel uneasy that some actually think the adoptions are just another form of charity.

I believed most of BAMZS posters, majority who are married with kids do knows what it takes to make a marriage work and and the effort to raise a family as a unit.

Living a life as a single or life of committed relationship but separate individual lifestyle is totally different from being a cohesive family unit and doing things together , compromising , understanding and making things work as a committed family unit. The later takes effort on both parties.. great effort !

The way that Brad and Angelina are doing everything together shows their committment to each other and to the family. By adding another child to the family shows their intense commitment to raise a family together for a very long haul. They are doing what they both enjoy intensely, a fulfilled relationship with their love for parenting and children. What else can you say about them except Beautiful Hearts Beautiful Family !

I have a subscription to People magazine. So, I should see soon what the full article says. I am not surprised that they are adding to their family now. I would not be surprised if they wait less than year to have another baby either a biological or through adoption.

Rumour has it Brad sees this not as a challenge about their parenting but a challenge about race. My grandparents met and married after just three months of knowing each other and nine kids and 52 years later…they are still together. Time doesn’t matter when it comes to have a strong or weak relationship…two ppl can just click and be able to have a great partnership that is life long.

Now with the mental health of Angelina Jolie, unless you have treated her personally, I don’t think you are able to give her a sound diagnosis of her mental state. If Angelina has these “serious mental health” issue you are speaking about then why was she able to adopted Maddox let alone adopted Z in the first place? The person who did her home study would have been able to pick up on these suppose mental issue she have and would not have allowed her to adopted. And let’s not forget that Brad has been living with her for the last two years and I’m sure he would have seen these mental issue by now and would have either A. ran the opposite way with the kids or B. seeking the necessary help for her and their family. I’m going with B for I don’t see Brad allowing someone who could harm the children (mentally and emotionally) to see after them for most of the day.

Lastly….everyone keep saying that the Jolie - Pitts started this process a little bit after Shiloh was born which was months before her mother died and the child they are adopting will not be in their home tomorrow or anytime soon, so I don’t understand why you are bring her mother’s death up. I’m sure AJ is grieving but her mother would want her to move on and live her life.

To be honest, I don’t think any official said anything like that at all to that magazine. Remember, this is the same magazine that twists articles around to say Angie or Brad told them things when they did not. I was also pleased when I read that neither Angie’s or Brad’s reps got back to them with replies to that comment. I like that they don’t waste their time answering Us magazine when they can go to People magazine. It’s also good that all this negativity is happening now and in about 3-4 months time when the little boy comes, it will all have blown over.

Famed filmmaker praises New Orleans as a movie town

Post-Katrina New Orleans is ready for its close-up.

“People here have real faces, like human beings,” director David Fincher said of the New Orleans extras who’ve fleshed out the scenes of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” the big-budget motion picture starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett that’s nearing completion after four months of shooting in and around the Crescent City.

Unlike the pool of camera-conscious Hollywood extras he’s used to, New Orleanians lack the “weird nose job, and that lip thing,” Fincher said. “They look like they have real lives.”

Fincher, the renowned director of contemporary noir classics such as “Se7en,” “Fight Club” and the newly released “Zodiac,” addressed 250 communications and film students Sunday afternoon at the University of New Orleans Performing Arts Center. The intimate two-chair format was similar to the Bravo TV series “Inside the Actor’s Studio,” with university provost and film critic Rick Barton posing questions.

Fincher, 44, was raised in Marin County, Calif. — George Lucas was a childhood neighbor — during a filmmaking boom in that part of the state. Once, he said, his grade-school classmates came to school with their heads shaved, having been extras in a science fiction movie.

Inspired by the 1969 movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” he edged his way into movie-making, first as a special effects technician at Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic (on “Return of the Jedi”), then as a television commercial director (Nike, Coca-Cola, Levi’s) and music video director (George Michael, Paula Abdul, the Rolling Stones). In 1992 he directed his first feature, “Alien 3,” a production marked by studio meddling and critical drubbing.

Fincher, wearing a chocolate-colored suede jacket, suppressed a cough throughout Sunday’s interview, but nonetheless charmed the crowd with wry, expletive-laced recollections of behind-the-scenes filmmaking. He warned his eager audience that the process may not be as rewarding as they imagine.

“It’s hard to go through all the nonsense of getting a movie made,” he said, citing the early mornings and bad coffee. “The only satisfaction you can get is by doing the work the best you can. . . . There is no actual ego justification for the self-mutilation we put ourselves through.”

He laid part of the hardship at the feet of actors.

“I don’t believe in coddling actors,” he said, referring to his demanding shooting schedule. “We pay them enough. . . . I don’t want (to hear about) their hangovers, being tired or being cranky.”

Fincher recalled that perennial bad-boy Robert Downey Jr. complained of the long hours and fast pace on “Zodiac.” The director joked that one sure technique for getting actors to leave their trailers was to lure them with a fishing line baited with a mirror or cell phone.

“Actors want to be liked,” Fincher said. “I don’t believe in that; it’s obsequious.”

As the director groused conspiratorially, audience members, many dressed with Spielbergian insouciance in baseball caps and worn tennis shoes, guffawed with approval.

Not everyone on the other side of the camera came in for disdain. “Benjamin Button” star Brad Pitt, who also starred in “Se7en” and “Fight Club,” is a Fincher favorite.

“There’s something amazing about him,” Fincher said. “He can say horrible (things) and if he smiles at you, you say, ‘Oh, OK.’

“I trust him. When he says I’ve got to do this this way, you go, ‘OK.’ ”

No matter how profitable, studio executives, Fincher lamented, are rarely pleased with the outcome of a film. The critically acclaimed “Zodiac” was based on the frustrating real-life pursuit of a 1960s and ’70s serial killer who was never caught. Fincher said that although he’d warned executives repeatedly that “Zodiac” would have a much different tone than his 1995 edge-of-your-seat cop thriller “Se7en,” executives were disappointed that “Zodiac” didn’t mirror the fictional action film.

“When they saw it, they said, ‘It’s not “Se7en.” These people just sit in a room and drink coffee from Styrofoam cups.’ ”

He seems to anticipate a similar misunderstanding when “Benjamin Button” is finished. Loosely based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story, it is the tale of a man magically born at age 80 and who gets younger as time goes by. Or, as Fincher described it, it’s about a newborn who looks like “a cross between Einstein and a Shar-Pei,” but, “because of his good fortune, gets to be Brad Pitt.”

Along his reverse-chronological path, Button/Pitt falls in love with a woman who ages normally (Cate Blanchett), which led studio executives to embrace the project as a simple love story. Not surprisingly, perhaps, Fincher feels the story is a bit darker and more complex.

“I think it’s a story about death,” he said, “to love somebody enough to be there when they breathe their last breath.”

Fincher said his father died two years ago at about the same time some of his friends were having their first child.

“It’s easy to have babies; it’s hard to be there when somebody dies,” he said.

Fincher said he considered shooting the Victorian-era period piece in Baltimore, where the short story was set, but decided on the Crescent City instead.

“We looked at Baltimore,” he said. “It lacked a certain warmth. It lacked the sense of history and patina of New Orleans.”

Fincher praised New Orleans as a location, noting that both rural and urban sets were easily available. To realize the city’s “enormous potential,” as a movie-making magnet, Fincher said, “you need four or five large, workable sound stages, an influx of cash to make a real workable physical plant.”

Asked to discuss the complications of filmmaking in the post-Katrina environment, Fincher minimized the hardship.

“The challenges of shooting after Katrina,” he said, “were the same as for anybody moving back: getting labor, getting plywood.”

Tourists go extra mile to do good
More travelers are taking volunteer vacations. A new website aims to help them plan.

Blame Angelina and Brad and their do-gooding, orphanage-visiting ways. Or maybe it’s all the hurricanes, tsunamis and tornadoes.

Whatever the reason, more tourists — such as college students on spring break, jet-setting luxury travelers and retiring baby boomers — are using their vacations to volunteer.

In the latest example of the growth of “voluntourism,” United Way, one of the nation’s oldest and largest community service organizations, and CheapTickets.com will unveil a website today to link travelers with volunteer work.

“You always had some college kids who go with their church ministry and they build roofs somewhere, but now it’s really something where the industry has taken notice,” said Cathy Keefe, spokeswoman for the Travel Industry Assn. of America. “It’s come a long way from the idea that it’s all crunchy-granola people.”

Recent surveys by online travel company Orbitz, competitor Travelocity and the travel industry group all show increasing interest in volunteer vacations. An even stronger indicator of the interest, Keefe said, is that more travel agencies and tour companies are offering specific volunteer opportunities. In some cases, people can add a day to their trips to focus on a specific cause.

The website doesn’t require visitors to book a vacation with CheapTickets or donate to United Way — but both options are a click away. Still, the site is mostly a way to link tourists with United Way’s 1,300 local chapters by logging on to CheapTickets .com, said Randy Punley, United Way’s director of corporate partnerships.

After travelers decide on their destinations, they can go to the site (volunteer.cheaptickets.com) to pick the specific location for their volunteer work and then select their particular social issue, such as homelessness, domestic violence and drug abuse.

To attract the travelers who might be interested in mixing a good time with good deeds, Punley said, “we’re on MTV, MySpace, Facebook, YouTube.”

Last year, about 100 college students volunteered in Biloxi, Miss., and Foley, Ala., as part of United Way’s inaugural Alternative Spring Break program. This month, more than 300 18-to-24-year-olds — more than 40% of them repeat volunteers — will head to Louisiana for more post-hurricane relief work.

Baltimore resident Brian Pham, 21, saw one of United Way’s ads on MTV last spring and ended up in Biloxi, roofing and framing homes for hurricane victims still stuck in trailers supplied by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

In June, he went on a vacation to New York, where he donated time at a day-care center, a home for the elderly and a women’s shelter. Now, he’s in Louisiana for a month as one of United Way’s project managers.

“I don’t even know what words to describe it. Fulfillment, I guess,” said Pham, who took time off from his family’s real estate company to volunteer. “You just feel like you’re doing so much to save the world.”

And it’s not just young idealists helping out. Richard Degnan, a senior executive for Williams-Sonoma Inc., took a four-week jaunt to Africa last year. On his trip, the 40-year-old San Francisco resident visited four countries and took two high-priced safaris. He also spent two days at three orphanages, where he played with children and dropped off suitcases full of clothes. It just didn’t seem right, he said, to go to Africa and not do any volunteer work.

“I know this is going to sound a bit silly, but to be honest, I think it’s because of people like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie,” said Degnan, referring to the celebrity couple’s globe-hopping visits to orphanages and refugee camps. “They’ve glamorized it.”

The orphanages were not what he expected. They were clean and the kids seemed happy and well cared for. But the children were still needy.

“They all craved physical attention — especially little kids want to be held, picked up,” Degnan said. “There’s just not enough people to give them enough attention.

“Now that I’ve done this once, wherever I go, I will always do this.”

Melissa Thornley, 35, spent last Christmas break in Honduras, building homes for the poor. She caught a truck every day at 7 a.m. that took her into the mountains, where she worked four or five hours.

“I was doing physical work, but in a way, it was relaxing,” said Thornley, managing director for a film editing company in Chicago that produces commercials. “When you’re in advertising, we’re not really contributing very much…. I wanted it to feel like I was doing something good over the holidays.”

She booked her trip through i-to-i.com, a British company that allows tourists to book specific volunteer travel. Among the choices: panda conservation in China, coaching baseball in the Dominican Republic and saving sea turtles in Costa Rica.

Although i-to-i.com has been around since 1994, North American bookings increased more than 300% from 2002 to 2005. Last year, the company arranged 5,000 volunteer vacations worldwide, spokeswoman Amy Kaplan said.

“Vacation travel is all about recharging our batteries,” said Randy Wagner, chief marketing officer for Orbitz Worldwide, which owns CheapTickets. “The traditional way is to go to the beach, recharge and you feel great. Now people are telling us that they feel just as great when they give back.”
