Angelina Jolie ‘Transformed’ in Chad
“If I can draw you in a little because I’m familiar, then that’s great. As long as [you] end up looking at them, that’s the point.” — Angelina Jolie on the power of celebrity.
Here are some of the highlight’s from Angelina Jolie’s recent trip to a camp housing Darfur refugees in Chad via Newsweek:
…But you do have photographers following you now. It took me a while to agree to do it. I guess I saw that so many times the picture comes before the knowledge and the substance and I certainly didn’t want to do that to myself or the organization. And also, I really just was shy. I was shy about sitting on the floor and talking to a woman and having a camera take a picture because I thought it was making less of my conversation with her. But… I was changed by the faces of the people I saw. “It is something that I am incapable of describing…those faces and that place and those people. And so I think it’s just—let the people speak for themselves through the camera. And if I can draw you in a little because I’m familiar, then that’s great. Because I know that at the end you’re not looking at me, you’re looking at them.
Do you still go with so few people? I can’t believe you take no one with you… I take no one. I [go] by myself on a commercial plane and into the field with my backpack.
You still do that? Yes, I just did that on my last trip. I met the photographer there.
In the camp? No, in the airport. We didn’t even realize we were on the same flight. We landed at like midnight and got up at like 5 in the morning to catch the WFP [World Food Program] plane [to a town near the camp].
People will look at these pictures of you in Chad and ask, “What can I do?” What should they do? There are great NGOs like SOS [Austria's SOS Kinderdorp] and there are great NGOs inside and under the U.N. that you could send aid to. It’s important for the American people to know that a lot of people believe—I certainly believe—that it has been their outcry and their interest that has motivated our government. I think that the American people have paid attention to Darfur—a really amazing groundswell of people that really care, and are moved and emotional about the things they’ve seen when it is brought to their attention.

Boring…………………………………
And she is definitely looking worse and worse……..all bones and skin.
Where the hell is the good-looking exotic Angie???
———————–
if this is boring, what the hell is you!
News of the world pretending Angie gave them an interview. LoL Unless they tricked her into it I don’t believe it.. It would be like giving the enquirer an interview.
It’s sad how shallow some can be.
Angie is trying to bring attention to genicode that is taking place once again. I thought after Rwanda that they world said never again but that isn’t the message that is being shown by actions or anything else.
Instead of trying to tear down Angelina Jolie for at least getting in the trenches to put the spotlight where it truly needs to be. Do something to help but it’s easier to sit back and criticize someone looks, body size but what are you doing to help? Oh I know NOTHING.
Looks fades. What counts is what is truly in a person heart. And I hate to say it some just don’t have a heart there is a big old empty space where it should be!
greetings from Holland,
Angelina is fearless, i admire her more and more, don’t compare her with Nicole Kidman, she was not there with Angie, i just once seen NK for UN work last year to Kosovo, she was so stylist with nice clothes and thick make up for her visits, and you are hater still proud about that what a hyprocrit, and don’t compare Angelina with other celebirity who are dare to visit to Africa (clean and nice ex: South Africa) and who are not dare to dangerous field like Congo, Darfur, Ethiophia cambodia etc Angie went to Chad not for PR but she went to the place which is dangerous, dirty, and chaostish she’s not saint only a human and woman has awarness, look at her, she hugging a boy with a string on his foot and she’s not felt horrible, Don’t you think hater if NK will hugging this boy?, I guarantee she’s not
Hej 119 lurker if she is sick she can get medical help but in your case there is certainly no way to fill that void between your ears is there, poor idiot.

Use your real name! and that goes to all of you! don’t be such sissys and use fake names!
UN should do something for Darfur seeing these horrible situations.
My applause for Angelina on her effort to help the nation.
I hope she’s been recovered from depression her mom’s passing caused and starts to have more healthier life style as eating good foods regularly and exercising.
God bless and I love you Angie!
If she had to date an actor Angelina shoulda been with George Clooney they appear to be on the same page. will they ever make a film together?
No offense, but what are the point of these trips? What does she actually accomplish? I mean Oprah (whom i loathe) went to Africa & built a school. Ok, fine, that is something tangible…
But what has Angelina actually done? She just goes there, gets her pics taken, and nothing changes. She has been doing these trips since 2001, WHAT HAS CHANGED? WHAT HAS IMPROVED?
All that happens is she gets good publicity. Now i\’m not saying that is her objective or her goal, but that is the only thing that actually happens.

On a lighter note, looking at these photos and photos from Newsweek, I’ve come to the conclusion it really is difficult to take a bad photo of Angelina.

So true, Lylian. That’s why haters can’t find any ugly pic of her.
BTW, your post and Malaya’s are good ones.

Two problems genius…
1 - George hates kids and does not want them.
2 - George is gay (like Tom Cruise).
Dear 132
I think Angelina is trying to help Darfur and raise awareness of the dire situations.
She’s spending her time in what she believes valuable that’s what she’s doing, I think. She gets good publicity but it’s because we can see her sincere concern for them. It’s heartwarming to watch someone as compassionate as her.

What Is Her Point?
———-
Darn, don’t you know how to read and comprehend? Think before you speak … your ignorance shows.
ntt, why are you so caught up with her looks? stop being so superficial .
George is not gay, he’s just a *****. I don’t see him with only one woman at all but I agree with the kids part.
Hey guys, just in case you missed it the last thread Mia Farrow was on Real Time with Bill Maher. She talked about Darfur and towards the end they talk about Angie. The interview starts at 5:15.

Also, Mia has some photo essays of Darfur up on huffington post too.

Angie has and is doing a lot. It is her job as part UNHCR to shine the spotlight on what happening to the reguees.
Maybe if you actually took the time to do some research, you would know all the good work has done and is continuing to do. Such as help build school, provide sewing machines for women to learn a craft to support themselves and their families, or provide medical equipment for clinics, and such. There is no sense in posting the information again because some will just continue to ignore the information.
Just remember, education is the key NOT ignorance!

why don’t you go find a tomkat thread
Personally, I’m sick and tired of people using Angelina’s current physical status as a weapon against her. They did it during her pregnancy, complaining that her thinness would affect Shiloh; then Shiloh was born at 7 lbs, fast forward to the present, Shiloh is the epitome of what babies should be– healthy, chubby, alert, and absolutely lovely. And look at Z… from a malnourished infant to a healthy, rambunctious toddler.
I understand concern, and I genuinely think that some are, but when these people start interjecting platitudes like ‘Brad likes his women skinny’ or ‘Angelina is being self-destructive’ just because, at this particular moment, she’s too skinny for some people’s frame of reference, then I seriously doubt your sincerity.
Most people are aware of the consequences of abusing food and, in turn, their bodies– loss of hair, teeth, osteoporosis, damage to major organs, including the heart. Do you really think that Angelina would jeopardize her chance to perform 100% in films, whether they were action, dramas, etc.? Do you think that she would jeopardize her quality of life with her family; one-on-one trips with Maddox, including dropping him off at school and playtime with Zahara and Shiloh for instead bedrest and IV feeding; and weekend excursions– bike trips, piloting her jet, etc. with Brad for more bedrest, IV feedings, and weekly counseling sessions with a eating disorder specialist. And finally, would she jeopordize her UN missions by increasing the likelihood of her collasping while the media records it, further belying some media outlets and politicians’ assertion that the places she goes to is too dangerous to offer aid and too dangerous for those not utilizing federal dollars to travel to?
People have jumped to the wrong conclusions before and there are no signs that it will end for Angelina. Angelina is probably more aware of her condition that the flacks at the tabs are; and if her situation is as dire as haters seem to claim, you would think that Brad, James, Holly or Maddox would have relayed their concern by now.

A very significant difference between the other really good people you named and Angelina is that she actually goes to the countries she is talking about , actually talks to the people , actually gets her hands dirty by working in the Millenium Villages or participating in building or loading trucks , or carrying children . How many of these other people do any of these things ? I don’t think Nicole Kidman has been to more than 2 countries and definitely not gotten dirty . The men you named have been working on this goal for the last 20-25 years . I think they are very admirable . All who decide to help the plight of the suffering are to be admired . But Angelina is definely in a special place . She is really unique .
Queen Bee Says: And as far as a Nobel Prize puhlease….she’s way behind Sir Bob Geldolf, Bono, Bill & Melinda Gates, Oprah and on and on….
To poster #84: Those that you mentioned above are way richer than Jolie. They’re BILLIONAIRES that you’re speaking of… Jolie is not a billionaire but worth some millions ONLY because she gives 1/3 of her income to charity and those in need. NOW when Oprah, Bill Gates, etc give 1/3 of their income away and time, I will be impressed!
I am a true fan of Angelina because she not only gives away $$$ but her precious time and energy for the less fortunate. Jolie is the true soul of a giver and one who loves children.

“What has changed?” Well the fact that you are here discussing the topic with us, the awareness in our conscience of what’s happening to some 200K people in Sudan, is what has changed. As for “What has improved?” Not much, because you have not done a thing to improve the situation. It takes all of us. But if you ask the little boy she held in her arms, he probably would tell you that for a moment in his life, he forgot about his suffering.
On a serious note, if you re-read the article, she is aware of her limitations, and is trying to find a solution.
About a year ago, I got a lot of books on international law and I tried to study what was going on—just out of a curiosity about what was this bigger picture. I don’t want to have to keep going back to camps, five different times, over the next 30 years of my life, [for situations] that there are no solutions for.
Mean time, bringing awareness to the crisis is what she wants to accomplish right now.
People will look at these pictures of you in Chad and ask, “What can I do?” What should they do?

#132 I think you should read the whole article and find the answers to your questions. Check the organization listed if you want to help and donate money.
