Zac Efron is Speed Racer

Go, Speed Racer! Go!

High School Musical’s Zac Efron is in talks to star in the lead role of The Wachowski brothers’ (V For Vendetta, The Matrix trilogy) adaptation of Speed Racer, the live-action adaptation of the Japanese cartoon series.

Zac, 19, was even granted permission by Disney to leave the High School Musical 2 set for a day so that he could attend the Speed Racer callback audition. I think this role is perfect for Zac. If Warner Bros. is smart, they will snag him!

Speed Racer is scheduled for a May 23, 2008 release.

Zac already has a feature film Hairspray with John Travolta set to drop July 20.

I love Zach and all..but I really think Emile Hirsch did a wonderful job as Speed. Zach just doesn’t seem to be…the right person for it though I love all his work.
