Pete? Calm down. Mr. Jackman is not using a whip on that horse. He is preparing to shoot a film in which he will be portraying a cattle drover. The story takes place in the Australian outback during the 1930’s-40’s leading up to Australia’s involment in WW II. During the course of filming, they will actually be conducting a cattle drive, moving about 2,000 head. An actor the caliber of Hugh Jackman is a stickler for detail when it comes to developing a character. I’m assuming they used whips back then, but I promise you, Hugh Jackman will not be striking ANY animal with one. He’s an animal rights activist. He’s an actor sir, and he’s got to make it look real…even though it is not. And anyone who would wish a “Christoper Reeve” on anyone, should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. What a vile thing to say.

sometimes actors get access to horses because they have the cash to, not because they have the knowledge, the knowhow, the respect for the animal or any training. I hope that what you say is right, that it is a cattle drover movie, that was the one thing I hoped for when I saw the aussie saddle.

Pete, please, you should think twice before wishing someone ill without knowing the facts of the matter at hand. And I would suggest you check out the numerous news articles about this film (which is called “Australia”); it is quite a big deal Down Under, where it will be the biggest film undertaken there in terms of scope and budget; Baz Luhrmann is directing an amazing cast including several well-known Australian actors. The film is indeed about a massive cattle drive undertaken by Nicole Kidman’s and Hugh Jackman’s characters in order to save Nicole Kidman’s character’s cattle station from being taken over by her enemies on the eve of the Darwin bombings during WWII. Hugh Jackman has been an anti-animal-cruelty activist for many years and so would be the LAST person to take that whip to his horse! Drovers and stockmen use whips like this in order to move the massive herds along with the cracking/whistling noise. Hugh would have to practice using the whip and of course has to do some of that practicing on horseback to make sure that the animal he will be riding in the film can handle the sound of the whip so close by. Mr. Jackman is not a novice rider by any means, but stockriding requires specific skills he has to learn.

And Wendy…quite a number of people ride, ski, and fly every day without being killed or maimed. The three people you mentioned were victims of unfortunate accidents, nothing more.
