OlderOrlando Bloom: The Reluctant Heartthrob
Pirates of the Caribbean hunk Orlando Bloom sits down with Gotham Magazine for their May 2007 issue to talk about “coping with psycho fans, imposter Orlandos on MySpace, and the challenge of being romantically linked to every girl he’s seen with.” Here are a few fun excerpts:
What’s it like to have teenage girls cry hysterically when they see you? It’s kind of sweet, you know. It’s a very pure and very real reaction, because they just lose it. I’m always amazed and very touched, because it’s an authentic response to a moment…. I remember being in Spain during the filming of Kingdom of Heaven. I was just talking to my mum on the phone and halfway through the conversation she asked, “What’s that in the background?” And I was like, “Um, it’s just a few girls screaming….” It was kind of a trip because it was the first time it had been like that. It’s not like that’s my life, though. It’s not like there are people camped outside my house.
What’s the most bizarre interaction you’ve had with a fan? In New York this girl kind of freaked out at me. I was being let out of a building and the security people were saying, “You’ve got to keep moving! You can’t stop! If you stop we’re going to have chaos in here!” But she got kind of aggressive with me and was really angry. She was like, “I’ve been at every premiere and you never say hello.” And it was funny, I felt really upset. I felt bad for her. So I turned around and went over to her and just gave her a hug and said, “It’s cool. I’m sorry you feel let down or disappointed. But the nature of my life is I can’t necessarily stop every time, and it’s not because I don’t want to.” I think she felt a little better afterward, and so did I. And for me, it actually shed a little light on the other side of the coin.
So, are you dating Penelope Cruz? [Pause] She’s a friend of mine.
So you’re not dating? [Very, very long pause] OK, so what’s your next question?

Wow. I’d feel sorry for her, too. It sounds like she doesn’t have a life. Who goes to every single premiere? Just wondering, not trying to be mean…but honestly. People cannot expect famous people to stop for every single fan and say hello. That’s just sad and unrealistic.

JO, for the record, I didn’t say anything bad about Orly, but why isn’t he dating? Is it possible he could still be carrying a torch for his ex, yes. Maybe that’s why he isn’t trying to get serious with anyone. Doesn’t it occur to you sometimes guys don’t leap into rebound relationships especially if they really had feelings for the one they parted with? Some people are good at rebounding, but obviously Orly isn’t. If he gets back with Bosworth more power to him and if he doesn’t he’ll live. He’ll wipe the dust from his feet and move on.What are you on, meds? Ricky I am not delusional, like I told JO I am referring the same thing to you.
He is not carrying a torch for Kate. She’s definitely moved on (and flaunting that fact in front of the cameras as often as she can) and so has he. You don’t know if he’s serious with anyone or not. He could just be keeping the relationship private.
Cynthia lives in an alternate reality where a man looking depressed around a girl is a sign of true love and when he’s relaxed and happy, that means he’s pining away.
Uh, he always looks intense in photo shoots. Even in ones that took place when The Greatestest Love Affair in the History of Forever was still going on. Try again.
