Angelina Jolie @ Tribeca Film Festival
Here is your exclusive access to Angelina Jolie and fellow activist Wyclef Jean at the Tribeca Film Institute Screening of the Jolie-directed documentary A Place In Time, aka A Moment in the World.
The documentary was screened at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center during the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival on Friday in New York City, where big brother James Haven (and his rumored girlfriend) was in attendance to lend his support to lil’ sis Angie.
For the film, Angelina sent out 38 film crews to different parts of the world to capture events unfolding during the same three-minute time period. Betcha she caught some very interesting things going on around the world…
Other pictures include Angelina arriving and leaving the festival wearing some killer eye shadow.
Also pictured: NEA President Reggie Weaver, Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education Joel Klein, co-founder of Tribeca Film Festival Jane Rosenthal, actress Bai Ling, and actor Olivier Martinez.

Drudge and Nikke are established movie reporters. I’m very happy to hear that they are saying Angie is a KNOCKOUT, going where she’s never gone before. This is what I have been waiting from critics.
Yes, AMH is a small small movie with low budget and minor crew.
Do you remember director Witherspoon used handycamera and shot without lightning. Plan B (Brad ) is cheap, isn’t it ? They saved money.(I’m joking) Angie cut her pay for the sake of this movie.
Its release in US starts in limited theater on 6/22 and will expand some later. AMH is a good movie but not blockbuster type.
Foreign release starts in fall and it covers most of European countries and several other counrties. They will sell tickets more than US. I am expecting her coming to Japan to promote her movie in December.
I don’t think anyone’s posted this yet.

Sorry, I was confused. So excited after the word from Nikke and Drudge.
AMH’s director is Winterbottom.
Angelina & Mariane’s Powerful Bond
Mariane Pearl, widow of murdered Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, and Angelina Jolie, who plays her in the new movie A Mighty Heart, sat down with Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive for an exclusive interview at Angelina’s home. Read excerpts from their conversation here, then check out the June issue of Glamour to read the full interview with Angelina and Mariane about their families, their friendship, and their hopes for the future.
In January 23, 2002, Mariane Pearl became a reluctant global icon. That was the day her husband, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, was kidnapped by terrorists in Pakistan while investigating Islamic extremism. For weeks, millions around the world watched, astonished, as Mariane, then five months pregnant with the couple’s son, Adam, appeared calm and collected on TV to appeal for her husband’s release. (When asked what she would say to him if he were listening, she replied simply, “I love you.”) The unbearable news in February 2002 that Pearl had been beheaded by his captors triggered worldwide outrage, but Mariane refused to lash out. “Danny has not been defeated,” she went on CNN to say. “His pain and my pain will help…change the world.”
The same beautiful message resonates throughout A Mighty Heart, Mariane’s best-selling memoir about the kidnapping ordeal, the film version of which—starring Angelina Jolie and produced by her partner Brad Pitt’s production company—hits screens in June.
Today I am meeting both women at Angelina’s sleek, modern Los Angeles home to discuss the film and the genuine friendship that has sprung up between them. Less than five minutes into our conversation, it’s clear that the bond between these two women is warm, respectful and real. Listen in and you’ll know why their closeness runs much deeper than a Hollywood movie deal.
CINDI LEIVE: So Mariane, you started to tell me the story of how you guys initially met, which to my surprise had absolutely nothing to do with A Mighty Heart.
MARIANE PEARL: One day a few years ago, I was alone in New York with Adam, still having a rough time [after Danny’s death]. I read an interview with Angie in a magazine, about her and Maddox and her life as a single mom. And I thought, this woman could be my friend…. I’d never experienced anything like that before in my life. It was something in her tone, in the answers that she gave. I felt also that Maddox and Adam [then both about three] could be good friends. So I sent her a note saying, do you want to have a playdate?
ANGELINA JOLIE: And I, on the other side of it, had been aware of you through the time that everything went down. I remember being amazed by your courage and your grace…. And when I got the note, I was thrilled. Later I realized that Mariane and I are the two worst people to plan a playdate in the history of playdates.
CL: Why?
AJ: Because she hates the phone as much as I do. So it almost didn’t happen! But when it finally did, I remember being really nervous, thinking, she’s such an intelligent European woman—what are we going to do together? So we went to this serious, European, existential play—it seemed like the right thing [and it was supposed to be OK for kids]. But Adam and Mad got antsy, and finally halfway through, to each other’s relief, we were both like, do you want to get out of here? And we ran out and went back to Mariane’s place….
MP: We cooked pasta; it was actually good. And then we started talking about changing the world…
AJ: …and about all the things we were passionate about. Her instincts were right—we did have so much in common. And all the kids are great friends now. Zahara is madly in love with Adam.
CL: And was the movie a thought for either of you at that point?
MP: …I had met with Brad separately about the movie, [but] he wasn’t connected at all with Angie at that time. To be honest, I wasn’t even sure I wanted to do a movie…. Everybody was using terrorism for their own political agenda at that time, and really, this is a story about Danny. But when I met Brad—well, out of all the studios, he was the only one who had actually read the book!
AJ: Really?
MP: Really…and I could see already that he wanted to have children, and to raise them in a world of tolerance…. I don’t think I would have done it if I didn’t feel a direct connection to Brad and, then, Angie.
AJ: We all had an understanding that it couldn’t be a traditional melodrama: You know, “Mariane starts to get upset and the camera gets really, really close.” Because the wonderful thing about Mariane, and the book, is that she’s not like that. You know, Mariane, you’re somebody who has every right to have a lot of anger. And the fact that you take a deep breath and stand up with a very clear voice of tolerance and dialogue—that’s why I wanted to do the film.
MP: Well, that kind of self-control…hasn’t been easy for me. I always go back to one moment: In Karachi, when Captain [the Pakistani officer who was leading the investigation into Danny’s kidnapping] came to the house and told me what happened, my reaction was that I grabbed an AK-47 from one of the guards. In that single moment, I knew how easy it would be to kill someone. If they had brought a person who was guilty [of Danny’s murder] to the house, I would have shot him. But then I would have destroyed everything Danny believed in, and everything we did as a couple—and I couldn’t do that. Putting that gun down was my biggest act of courage.
CL: So Angelina, here you are, knowing Mariane, being friends with her—and then you take on this role. That must add a layer that doesn’t usually exist for an actress.
AJ: Yeah, and it’s horrible. I was so nervous! I mean, it’s like you’re in a roomful of your closest friends and somebody says, “Why don’t you get up and imitate the friend to your left?” Nobody would want to do that, ever!…. Much more than how Mariane looks or acts, I wanted to express her essence. I’ve come to respect her so much as a hard-working person, a serious journalist, a great mom and an emotional, real woman, and I want the audience to connect with her the way I feel she deserves to be connected with. And that was hard, because I had to express the worst time in her life and [in the scene where Mariane is told of Danny’s death] the moment when she received the worst information of her life. It became the worst acting day of my life—and really, the hardest thing I’ve ever done.
CL: Mariane, how do you think Danny would’ve felt about the idea of this movie?
MP: I think he would be really proud. You know, he’s the person I did it for. If it were just for me, I wouldn’t have done a movie at all. But without the book and movie, he would’ve been known more for the way he died than the way he lived. I couldn’t accept that.
For the full interview—including more on how Mariane and Angelina feel about motherhood, loss, risk-taking and love—see the June issue of Glamour, on newsstands by May 8.
I knew they divorced over kids.
Thanks C. I can’t wait for that interview. Angie and Marriane Pearl look so gorgeous and the place they are in looks good too.
Frenchy- thanks for the info from Drudge and Nikke. Angie might be getting her second Oscar nom. Remember also the guy who was on GoodMorning America said the buzz on Angie in AMH is that she’s great. I am so freaking happy for her.
I have much higher hopes for “A Mighty Heart”…remember the penguin movie? No one ever dreamed a tiny documentary about penguins’ lives would take over the entire world, run for a year in theatres and make so much money. I think there will be great interest in the story and in Angelina’s performance. Fingers crossed…

Expressing ignorance is not bliss. No one who has any small sliver of a functioning brain would even question why parents might not want to -Throw four kids aged 5, 3, 2, and 11 months old on a plane for a two day trip when they are about to leave the US for over a month in a few days. Especially when the 3 year older has just been adopted into a family and is still adjusting to his new family. Perhaps wise and good parents recognize that one of the parents needed to be with the four kids if the other parent had to travel on a short business trip. Travelling with four kids so small requires major logistical organization and planning. Is this not so?
Angelina was seen out Thursday in DC and Friday in NYC. She has not been seen on Saturday or Sunday. She has either returned home to her family, or maybe her family flew in and picked her up and they are now in Europe. Either of these two alternatives make sense to most people. The less disruption for the kids the better the trip experience will be, especially for Pax who has been with his family for one month only. The other three kids are travel pros and Pax will be by the time they return to the US in a month or so.
And since they are good at stealth trips for all anyone knows Brad and the kids might have slipped into NYC this weekend and they are still in town. Who knows and it is really no one’s business but theirs.
Jolie and Pearl have a ‘Mighty Heart’-to-heart
By Karen Thomas, USA TODAY
“Mariane (Pearl) and I are the two worst people to plan a playdate in the history of playdates,” Angelina Jolie tells Glamour. “She hates the phone as much as I do.”
Jolie and Pearl, the wife of slain journalist Daniel Pearl, sat down together with editor in chief Cindi Leive for the interview, which appears in the June issue of Glamour. It arrives on stands nationwide May 8. The women had become fast friends before discussions started about making A Mighty Heart, based on Pearl’s memoir. Jolie portrays Pearl in the film.
Pearl says a magazine interview with Jolie sparked the widow to send the actress a note suggesting a playdate to include Pearl’s son Adam and Jolie’s son Maddox.
Jolie says she recalls “being really nervous, thinking, ‘She’s such an intelligent European woman — what are we going to do together?’ So we went to this serious, European, existential play — it seemed like the right thing (and it was supposed to be OK for kids). But Adam and Mad got antsy, and finally halfway through, to each other’s relief, we were both like, ‘Do you want to get out of here?’ ”
Pearl says she met with Brad Pitt about making A Mighty Heart before the actor became involved with Jolie. “I wasn’t even sure I wanted to do a movie,” Pearl tells Glamour. “But when I met Brad — well, out of all the studios, he was the only one who had actually read the book!”

Thanks for the link and post. That totally debunks the story about the two connecting through Brad although there is nothing wrong with that. Its nice to know they connected in so many different things and friendship arose from that same interest in things and issues and their children.

Thanks for posting this, Angie and Marianne are two extraordinary women. I am glad they are friends and I am double glad that Angie played her in AMH.
Angie and Brad’s house looks so good in the picture. Both women look terrific. Marianne knew Angie and Brad separately before they came together. That’s fate. I pray the movie does well.

You are 100% right, Brad’s greatest heart’s desire was a family with children just as he said over and over.

USA today has a pix of AJ and MP sitting outside in comfi looking deck chairs, their home reflects Brad’s love of the sleek modern with AJ and the kids comfortable influence, a perfect combination.

Love this, a direct rebuttal to those fiends who keep insisting that Angelina has no friends.

Yeah, hope Jared can put up a new thread with that part of the interview from the glamour mag.
Hey Lylian!
OT: Fairy Tales
There is a big difference between the “art” fairy tales (Kunstmärchen) like the ones written by Oscar Wilde and Hans Christian Andersen and the “folk” fairy tales that are part of an oral story-telling tradition, like the Grimm brother’s. The “art” ones are literature, written as such, these are usually prettier, the style, narrative, etc.; the other ones, the “folk” ones are the reflection of hundreds of years of fears, ghosts, and harsh lessons - especially for children.
I had nightmares as a kid, especially about the stories of children who didn’t behave well and had their hands cut off and were abandoned in the woods to starve - I’m not kidding! The versions you know of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Little Red Ridding Hood, etc are so whitewashed and sugarcoated.
You know the Frog Prince? In the Grimm’s version the frog makes the princess promise him to be his companion and even share her bed with him, and her father agrees and sends her to bed with the frog. I read these stories with my students - college - and they love them, but they are a bit to bloody and cruel for little children.
