OlderAngelina Jolie & Marianne Pearl: Worst People to Plan a Playdate
Marianne Pearl, the wife of the slain Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl, and Angelina Jolie (she plays her in the upcoming film A Mighty Heart) sits down with Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive for an interview at Angelina’s home. Here are some fun excerpts:
CINDI LEIVE: So Mariane, you started to tell me the story of how you guys initially met, which to my surprise had absolutely nothing to do with A Mighty Heart.
MARIANE PEARL: One day a few years ago, I was alone in New York with Adam, still having a rough time [after Danny’s death]. I read an interview with Angie in a magazine, about her and Maddox and her life as a single mom. And I thought, this woman could be my friend…. I’d never experienced anything like that before in my life. It was something in her tone, in the answers that she gave. I felt also that Maddox and Adam [then both about three] could be good friends. So I sent her a note saying, do you want to have a playdate?
ANGELINA JOLIE: And I, on the other side of it, had been aware of you through the time that everything went down. I remember being amazed by your courage and your grace…. And when I got the note, I was thrilled. Later I realized that Mariane and I are the two worst people to plan a playdate in the history of playdates.
CL: Why?
AJ: Because she hates the phone as much as I do. So it almost didn’t happen! But when it finally did, I remember being really nervous, thinking, she’s such an intelligent European woman—what are we going to do together? So we went to this serious, European, existential play—it seemed like the right thing [and it was supposed to be OK for kids]. But Adam and Mad got antsy, and finally halfway through, to each other’s relief, we were both like, do you want to get out of here? And we ran out and went back to Mariane’s place….
MP: We cooked pasta; it was actually good. And then we started talking about changing the world…
AJ: …and about all the things we were passionate about. Her instincts were right—we did have so much in common. And all the kids are great friends now. Zahara is madly in love with Adam.

ITA. I typically don’t buy Glamour, but I will buy this edition.
For all of the talk, from haters, about how they want Brad and Angelina to disappear, the haters’ cries are the loudest when there’s a ‘Brangelina drought’. A certain hater demonstrated how her equilibrium was thrown off by the lack of news by picking fights and stealing identities.
What is your favorite Angie movie (beside the obvious M&MS, GIA, Girl Interupted, and the Tomb Raiders series)?
I love her in “Bone Collector” and “Beyond Broders”. She was also very good in a little gem called “Playing by Heart” (one of my favorite).

Longtime Fan/Lurker - I loved her in Beyond Borders so much, MMS, Alexander, MMS and recently TGS.
I actually think even though she was very very good in Gia and Girl Interrupted and deserved that oscar… I wish she never goes back into playing those dark characters at this stage in her life. She seems like the kind of actress that goes deep into her role such that it becomes her. That kind of approach often leaves a mark on you. No wonder she quit acting shortly after Gia in order to re-group.
Love all the roles she picked recently. Hoepfully, she will continue acting more in the future.

I wonder if she would ever do a comedy. I would like to see her in one. Also I if she would ever do Broadway or a play before a live audience.

Talk about lack of communication on Brad’s half. Angie didn’t even know Brad read M Pearl’s book, quote “really?”. Brad produced the movie, or maybe Angie should have asked him if he had read it. He sounds like a very secretive guy.
Notice how he lets the women (ex and Angie) in his life do all the talking and he sits back and relaxes.

M Pearl said that Brad was the ONLY one that had read the book…Angie was shocked about that statement…of course she knew brad had read it…u idiot!!!
I think Angie will do more of children/family/humanitarian/political kind of movies such as TGS, Beyond borders, AMH, changeling and some of MMS/Wanted kind for fun (you know those kicking/shooting kind of fun).
For Brad, I think, he will also do more of black comedy/drama kind with some plitical kind added.
I want them make a movie together. However, I afraid that people will analyze every scene of the movie (as we did for MMS) and connect them to their real life.
I think Angelina is great. I wonder if she’s filming her next movie yet.

Angie did some comedy-like movie (it was called “life or something like it” . I do not know if you can call it comedy or not but it was very light-weight movie. I watched in TV and I thought it was pretty good, but it did not do well in box office and some critics said it was not well received because the character was totally differ from what people perceived of Angie. I thought she was pretty good and funny.

I like Edgy Angelina, but I get what you’re saying. But I do think that she’s less inclined to dwell in those dark places, especially since she can be shocked back into reality by her babies’ hands.
Favorite Angelina role — Girl Interrupted. But I found MAMS enjoyable mainly because both she and Brad were allowed to be edgy, yet childlike.
For some reason, I envision her, if any American production company had the guts to adapt this show to a film, without Disneying it down, as Patsy Stone in AbFab. Naturally, this possibility is 15-20 years down the line, but Angelina could be an interesting Patsy.
Another possibility — again, this is 15 years down the line… she could be in Kill Bill Vol. 3, as Elle Driver’s lesbian lover and her eyes, since Beatrix Kiddo plucked out the other one. Uma Thurman vs. Angelina Jolie… could be cool.
And finally, I watched that E show, Blvd. of Broken Dreams, and the subject was about Network and the real-life story of a female journalist shooting herself on the air. This could be a good role for Angelina–dark, yes– but she could knock it out of the park.

Mygawd she is just gorgeous. Do you know when these were taken? There are so few women who could, would be photographed with so little adornment. She looks better than any of those women without makeup in People’s most beautiful issue. Are there recent photos? It doesn’t really matter because those pictures of her in Washington, the close ups, she looks just as beautiful. This woman can’t take a bad picture. Peace.

I think we all knew the tabloids were going to go after Angelina because she was out without brad. We are in a time warp where Angelina can’t be seen with any other men. Other women can do it just not Angelina.
