OlderAngelina Jolie & Marianne Pearl: Worst People to Plan a Playdate
Marianne Pearl, the wife of the slain Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl, and Angelina Jolie (she plays her in the upcoming film A Mighty Heart) sits down with Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive for an interview at Angelina’s home. Here are some fun excerpts:
CINDI LEIVE: So Mariane, you started to tell me the story of how you guys initially met, which to my surprise had absolutely nothing to do with A Mighty Heart.
MARIANE PEARL: One day a few years ago, I was alone in New York with Adam, still having a rough time [after Danny’s death]. I read an interview with Angie in a magazine, about her and Maddox and her life as a single mom. And I thought, this woman could be my friend…. I’d never experienced anything like that before in my life. It was something in her tone, in the answers that she gave. I felt also that Maddox and Adam [then both about three] could be good friends. So I sent her a note saying, do you want to have a playdate?
ANGELINA JOLIE: And I, on the other side of it, had been aware of you through the time that everything went down. I remember being amazed by your courage and your grace…. And when I got the note, I was thrilled. Later I realized that Mariane and I are the two worst people to plan a playdate in the history of playdates.
CL: Why?
AJ: Because she hates the phone as much as I do. So it almost didn’t happen! But when it finally did, I remember being really nervous, thinking, she’s such an intelligent European woman—what are we going to do together? So we went to this serious, European, existential play—it seemed like the right thing [and it was supposed to be OK for kids]. But Adam and Mad got antsy, and finally halfway through, to each other’s relief, we were both like, do you want to get out of here? And we ran out and went back to Mariane’s place….
MP: We cooked pasta; it was actually good. And then we started talking about changing the world…
AJ: …and about all the things we were passionate about. Her instincts were right—we did have so much in common. And all the kids are great friends now. Zahara is madly in love with Adam.

You know what I think is so great about this interview? I think it’s the first time that Angie has done a joint interview with another person, and they will be talking like friends sharing their ideas with us. I so can’t wait.

Interesting that even a respected magazine like Time damns Angie with faint praise, undervalueing her good works and negatively condemning her by parroting the sentiments of the titilating tabloids

To tell you the truth, with all that Angie is accomplishing, I don’t really care what they have to say. That’s water under the bridge, and we shouldn’t dwell on it too much. What they say will not stop her from accomplishing what she sets out to do. To that I say, go Angie.
They have so much in common…….like sleeping with married men.
No wonder they are good friends.

Boy, now I have to buy Glamour too!!! I already have so many of the legitimate magazines like Vogue, Interview, Newsweek, all the significant People magazines == everything related to the Jolie-Pitts.
I liked reading the part about Mariane feeling a connection with Angie because of what she read about her; and this was before the connection with Brad! So it must have been fate, and the fact that Angie is playing Mariane is just so appropriate. Normally I do not like movies that have such heavy themes but I will be one of the first in line to see AMH.

angelina could have had Oliver Martinez years ago. She chose who she wanted in her life, the father of her children, the man who she comes home to every night. dream on interesting.

Hey everyone :) Angie and Marianne are so inspiring and let’s face it y’all, we live in a world filled with women who are total wrecks Kate Moss, Lindsay, Paris, Nicole etc..So it’s refreshing to see two intelligent, thoughtful, kind and genuine women in the spotlight. Instead of getting into petty fights at clubs or online, club hopping, hanging outside of hotel windows, cruising around town without panties on, these two are living above the fray. They’re raising their families, living their lives and they’re trying to make the world a better place than when they came into it. Their message is of hope, peace and tolerance which is definitely something that this world needs right now.
Stranger, #77, thanks for the link. I remember seeing a few years back a french documentry of a little french girl and her astounding relationship with an African bush tribe. I remember thinking her parents and her were amazing people. And here little Pippi is, a teenager now. And Angie donates to their organization! Too cool.

Am all about Angelina Jolie. But being a girl’s girl, one of the knocks on Angelina Jolie, in sharp contrast of course to Jennifer Aniston, is that she doesn’t seem to have many girlfriends. If any.
Having said that, Angelina Jolie is ostensibly not that kind of girl. She wouldn’t want to come to my house on a Friday night to watch Bridget Jones and put on nail polish and throw back several bottles of shiraz. She doesn’t spend hours on the beach bronzing her skin and giggling with Courteney Cox.
Which is why Angelina Jolie is understandably intimidating. Especially for the MiniVan Majority.
But as it turns out, Angelina Jolie does have girlfriends. Gwen Stefani for starters – playdates last summer – and Mariane Pearl, widow of Daniel Pearl, who Angelina is portraying in A Mighty Heart, produced by Brad Pitt.
Needless to say, Mariane is not a frivolous woman. She probably wouldn’t hang out in Malibu with Courteney Cox either. But she would invite Angie and her kids over for a play date. And they made pasta, and their kids are friends, and Zahara is “madly in love” with Adam – Mariane’s son. A formidable woman friends with another formidable woman? Photos and article in the upcoming issue of Glamour.
well I’m glad they are good friends, but we need more Brad news.
