ISLAMABAD: The UN refugee agency on Wednesday handed over 40 orthopaedic beds donated by actor Brad Pitt to earthquake victims at an Islamabad hospital.

Dr Syed Fazle Hadi, executive director of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad, received the first of 40 beds from Guenet Guebre-Christos, UNHCR’s representative in Pakistan. The bed was worth over $100,000. Pitt made the donation through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) when he visited Pakistan in late November with Angelina Jolie, the agency’s goodwill ambassador. “We are grateful to our donor Mr Brad Pitt, for supporting the relief effort,” said Guebre-Christos. “This donation will bring comfort to the injured and facilitate the work of the dedicated hospital staff of PIMS.” “It’s not easy to look after quadriplegic patients, who are prone to bed and pressure sores if they stay in the same position for too long,” said Dr Hadi. “But the orthopaedic beds can be tilted from side to side and moved up and down on electronic hydraulics.”

After Angelina Jolie gave birth to daughter to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt at the Welwitschia Clinic in Walvis Bay on Saturday, she and Brad Pitt decided to express their gratitude by donating $300,000 to the Namibian hospital. According to the New York Daily News, the couple are also spending $15,000 to build a school and a community center in Swakopmund.

“We want to contribute to Namibia and the people who have been so gracious to us at this time,” a government statement released yesterday quoted the couple as saying.

Mother and baby are healthy and doing well, according to Samuel Nuuyoma, governor of the Namibian region of Erongo.

“They are just fine, they are enjoying their lives,” said Nuuyoma.

Two humanitarian organizations will be the recipients of $1 million dollars each, thanks to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The organizations are Global Action for Children and MSF (Doctors Without Borders)

Says Angelina in her statement: “In the most troubled parts of the world — places that much of the world has abandoned — MSF is always there. I have seen these brave men and women working in war zones and horrific conditions and I deeply admire them.”

Angelina Jolie was in the capital yesterday to help officially launch Global Action for Children. The organization has been around for almost 4 years, but the press event yesterday helped them officially launch a more formal organization and announce their new headquarters in Washington D.C.

Jennifer Delaney, Executive Director of Global Action for Children told the audience, “Angelina Jolie is a global leader on children issues. We are thrilled to have her as the honorary chairperson of the GAC Board. Her support of GAC helps us to ensure that orphans and vulnerable children in developing countries and the communities that care for them get the support they need.”

This is the same organization that received $1 million from Brad & Angie back in September.

“This is a happy day because it’s not often enough children are represented in this town,” Jolie said. “Their education and well being is an investment in our future.”

GAC wants you to get educated and then become a local activist on these issues.

What? the donations have been received several years ago. Do something with your life, this couple is doing a lot to help others.
